Recruiting on the High Seas :: WR Ben McRoy and WR Javares McRoy
If you're not currently excited about this current class, then it's time to start. Yesterday, Texas Tech received a verbal commitment for the 2010 class from Lakeland, FL WR/RB Ben McRoy and a verbal commitment for the 2011 class from Roy's brother, WR Javares McRoy. This is a pretty big deal.

The Players Speak
LAJ's Don Williams spoke mainly with Ben regarding his commitment and here's Ben on why he chose Texas Tech:
"I know I’ll get a lot of chances to play there,’’ Ben McRoy said. "I like the offense. I like how they throw the ball. I’m becoming a better wide receiver, and they’re recruiting me at wide receiver, so that’s good news for me. They had my interest, so I committed. Plus, they don’t want me just to get my brother. They like me for who I am.’’
I think the latter portion of this quote speaks to the staff and how they might be recruiting the McRoy brothers, essentially telling Ben that they think he's talented enough (and from watching the video below, I'd have to agree) to have a scholarship on his own merit, irregardless of whether Javares commits. I would imagine that there were schools out there telling them that if they didn't commit together then there was no deal. It sounds as if Texas Tech played this a bit differently.
And after watching some of the McRoy Brother highlights, this is positively true:
"We’ve always been the fastest wherever we went,’’ he said. "When we get the ball, we can run real well. All the coaches can tell that from looking. We’re both explosive.’’
The Scouting Report
Be forewarned, if you don't like music then turn down your speakers, but you need to watch these videos. After watching all of these videos (and there are plenty more out there, feel free to search), I'm struggling to figure out why Ben has not received more offers. He's playing running back at 165, but it's obvious that he's elusive and he's got a great stutter-step move that helps him avoid tacklers in addition to having blazing speed. I have no idea why he hasn't been rated, and if he has been rated and he's still only a 1-star player, then we need more 1-star players like Ben McRoy. As far as Javares is concerned, he's a pure receiver and if he can get around a corner, he's gone. There were also instances in the video where he was running past the covering cornerback by 10 yards. There's a reason why Javares is being recruited by the likes of California, Tennessee, Florida St., North Carolina and Florida and it's because he has tremendous speed.
As far as the video is concerned, Ben is #21 and Javares is #9. Enjoy

Both seem great. #9 might have the extra big play step but #12, ben, has some seriously great moves. I’m thinking carlos francis, glover, type guy. And these are the types of guys Tech gets in the NFL at receiver as well. I’m loving both of these guys. Awesome and congrats to them!
The Leach recruiting era is getting better and better. Who knew we would be getting ESPN top 150 guys from FL? Awesome!
These guys look awesome. We’re gonna be the bullies in the Big12 at some point. We just have to have all the pieces of the puzzle come together in the same year..ie team chemistry, experience, and the ball bouncing our way a few times. It’s easier said than done, but hey, we’re getting the recruits to make it possible.
Leach...
is developing a reputation among FL high school players. This is only going to get better for Tech. Lots of kids view Leach as a college football icon and playing at Texas Tech is vastly becoming a meca for college football receivers and quarterbacks. I see really big things in our future. Defense will follow.

I like the way you worded that.

Heck yessss....
If UT wants to play the recruit the sibling game recruiting McCoy and Shipley’s little brothers then I say HECK YES to Tech recruiting these brothers into their roster.
I like the idea of a RB/WR combo better than a WR/QB combo any day. Besides, little Shipley and little McCoy look like a bunch of pussies when you see them without their gear on. They both don’t look like aggressive football players, but perhaps that’s just me who thinks that way.
And just to confuse the defenses even more, I say put both of these guys into a 2 RB Wishbone offensive package with Seth Doege at QB who is capable of running the ball along with a 2-wide Split crossover package so DB’s won’t know who to defend because both guys will carry the same last name of McRoy. lol
I say screw the last name of McCoy.
I like the McRoys’ a whole lot better.
They are definitely more athletic running the ball and putting moves on others according to these videos. lol ;)
Holy Crap...
These kids are FAST!!! Imagine putting Ben in the slot and Javares in Eddie Britton’s spot. He’s so much faster than Eddie and there’s a very strong probability that he has better hands. We just need to make sure these kids can run their routes and they will be legends of the Leach era. I still can’t get over how fast they are. If they have successful careers, Florida might become a breeding ground for Tech receivers.
I like them
Ben should be a great addition, as will be his brother Javares the following year. With Corker and Boone on the way, too, the Florida connection is heating up. Can you imagine the draw Leach and his staff would have in Florida if they were all a pert of Fla State or Miami or Fla? I shudder at the thought, but what makes it good is that those schools have no clue in such regards. The transition from our present receivers to the incoming one will be very seamless as they all appear to possess as good if not better abilities. And just think about Karem or Young tossing the old pigskin their ways for FOUR or FIVE solid years. YUM, YUM! This Raider team appears to be headed for greatness that will be very difficult for other programs to match. AWESOME!

Texas Tech has averaged somewhere under 3-starred recruiting
until the last couple of years. UT has averaged, probably, well over 4-starred recruiting for many years, sometimes pulling the majority of Texas blue chippers to their field. The Raiders, with lower “star power”, so to speak, is very close to equaling UT on the field in wins against each other. I feel Tech will soon match UT across the board in victories over everyone. All this with less “star power”. To me, that means Tech has the coaching abilities to squeeze more out of their players than most schools’ coaches, including UT. Can they pass UT be “owned”. I doubt it. But we can be very competitive with them and at least break even on the field. That will, in many years, mean a championship now and then where there are none now. So, the future does look good and we fans must be happy for that.

If we win a championship or two within the next 3 years, our recruiting level would go way up. More than likely giving us more blue chippers then UT. With our coaching abilities, I feel this would make us all but unstoppable for a WHILE. And maybe more importantly, those whorns couldnt be so smug around us.
OMG
The third video and the play @ 1:35!!! the camera couldnt even keep up with that kid
Running Style
Both guys remind me of DeSean Jackson, i.e. quick change of direction, dangerous speed.
I agee with an eariler poster….I’d love to see Ben in the slot and Javares out wide.
Question
I read somewhere else on here that they are going to redshirt Ben so when Javares comes they can play at the same time. Is that true? Why won’t they redshirt Javares too?
