Tech Basketball Continues to Climb

Texas Tech and Pat Knight are experiencing a level of success not seen on the South Plains in quite some time. They made the largest jump this week in the AP Poll, up to #16. Kudos!

Although I will agree that Tech is playing really good basketball compared to past seasons I really do think rating them #16 is out of control. The teams that are slightly above them are Gonzaga and Michigan State. I mean Really??

Perhaps it’s just me or the fact that Tech has had a week off, but I really do think #16 is pre-mature. I don’t mind putting Tech at around #20 or #21. That’s fine, but #16 is really out of control.

I think ESPN and the Associated Press need to wait a little longer before they rate Tech so high. I say they should wait for the next 3 games to take place, and then I’ll give it the okay that Tech be in the #15 range if they can pull out wins @ Wichita State, Stanford, and @ New Mexico.

This is still pretty awesome for Tech though. I just hope the players don’t grow a big ego about it and continue to do their binnis binnis against Wichita State this next Saturday.

I don’t think I would say it’s out of control to rank us at 16. I think we deserve it considering we beat a #10 team and we’re still undefeated 9 games into the season. Granted, there are a lot of good teams out there and as the season goes on, where a team deserves to be ranked will become more clear. Maybe we aren’t the #16 team, but right now we have a zero in the L column, and not too many teams can still say that.

But I agree that the next 3 games will paint a lot better picture of this team. Its gonna be a tough stretch, but it should help prepare us for Big 12 play.

That's funny

I was thinking exact same thing. It’s funny these rankings are all suspect this early in the season and we beat a team that MAY have been overated (we really don’t know until March) who’d not even played a road game at the time and beat a solid TCU and look at the meteoric rise. Well, if the other teams can get the undeserved love, than we can too.

What?!

The one time in history Tech actuallly gets some early respect from the media and you are bothered by it? I see your point, but you have to count that we are 9-0, and have beat a top 10 team already. How many ahead of us can say that right now?

by RdrPwr on Dec 14, 2009 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

totally disagree. our resume is good. if we beat a ranked New Mexico on the road and still have no L’s then we are top 10. dig it.

+1

I couldn’t agree more. I am in no way saying they don’t deserve this but I hope they aren’t satisfied with this either.

As a professed disliker of basketball in general, I am now at least moderately interested in this team thanks to their success to start the year.

I’m not fair weather, I’m more like NO weather with Tech basketball and college basketball in general outside of March. Pro basketball is unflinchingly corrupt and the players call the shots, so I won’t ever give that more than a, “So the (insert team) won the title? Huh. How about that.”

But even I am not blind to the impressive start by this team. Before, I’d just read about the games on the internet. Now, I may try to watch more than the last three minutes on TV – though it will be tough : )

No offense but...

this is the first year in a long time we have started out like this, therefore this could be your first chance at being a fair weather fan. Maybe, just maybe you are a fair weather tech bball fan and dont even know it!

That pretty much describes my interest in basketball, too. Although I did watch the Washington game and listened to most of TCU on the radio.

TTU Suddenly at 16 amazes me.

I don’t agree or disagree, I am only amazed.

ESPN/USA Today has us at #20

And I think this is more where the team should be, but we have to remember that many of the other teams in the top 25 haven’t proven themselves much either. Tech deserves our position in the polls for the mere fact that we are unbeaten. Even Kansas and Texas have said they don’t feel like they deserve the #1 and #2 spots. This early in the season, all teams feel undeserving if they are ranked, but I’m enjoying this moment as much as I can. Go Tech!

We are ranked so stop complaining. Keep on winning, that’s what really matters right now. We have three tough games ahead of us! Our next three opponents have a combined record of 24-4!

by bthomps87 on Dec 14, 2009 5:50 PM CST reply actions

Despite Stanford having 3 out of those four losses, Tech is 0-3 vs Stanford the last three years. One of those years was the last time Tech made the NCAA tourney, 06’.

not to mention an empty USA for that game… yet another questionable call on tech scheduling. Almost as bad as having homecoming during fall break.

Huge for Tech

Lets not kid ourselves. This is a huge plus for Tech to be undefeated and ranked among the top BB teams in the country. The Red Raider nation needs to embrace this and support these guys by going to games and getting on the band wagon! Pat Knight is a winner and you can bet these guys will continue to win. I’m not a BB genius but I do know that from what I’ve witnessed this season we are a much better team than I was ever used to seeing. Expect great things because Texas Tech as whole is making a lot of noise in the sports world. Congrats to coach Knight and our team.

Cracks me up

All fall we complain about how football rankings are BS and aren’t based on results, but voters’ biases. Now we enter basketball season and are undefeated 9 games in with a win over a highly ranked opponent. The voters are actually voting based on performance thus far in the season and not on expectations or pre-conceived notions and what do we do??? We COMPLAIN about it… come on guys. The voters are actually doing the right thing here!!!! I can understand those of you that have an objective view of what is to come through the rest of the season… but I don’t agree at all with the complaints about us being ranked too high.

Rank

That is what Tech has basically been for some time. Now, they are ranked, and not so rank. I say enjoy the recognition as we seldon obtain it.

TV Time?

hopefully we will get some tv time. maybe espn or fsn will pickup some more games since we are top25 team in apparently a very strong “basketball?” conference with 5 teams in the top25! what is the big 12 network?
