Where are they now?

Since there's not much going on football-wise on DTN, I thought it may be interesting to try and find out what some former Red Raiders are up to these days. I don't have any contacts that know too much about the comings and goings of past greats, but maybe some of you guys do. The interwebs offers some good stuff from time to time, though.

Anyone know what some of these guys are up to these days?

Tracy Saul

Tyrone Thurman

Lloyd Hill

Zebbie Lethridge

Feel free to add your own info on other players if you know something interesting.

I was thinking more along the guys who played in the 80s or 90s, but whomever…the younger guys haven’t had much time to make a name for themselves outside of football just yet.

I heard that last season Ivory Mccann was the pixie dust spreader on the tilt-a-whirl at Six Flags;)

Zebbie thought we could win a national championship in 2005. interesting.

Wow…Zebbie is probably a pretty rich dude after that settlement. I had no idea.

What about:

Lloyd Hill
Bam Morris (no longer in prison I think)
Spike Dykes

by WreckerRaider on Dec 15, 2009 8:50 AM CST reply actions

Dykes has a string of car dealerships.

I’m not sure if that’s what he’s really doing.

Dykes is chilling out in Horseshoe Bay…makes a few appearances here and there. And yes, owns car dealerships.

by Tech92 on Dec 15, 2009 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

Really?

That’s semi close to my inlaws lake house. I’ll have to get a bigger Tech flag for the dock to attract Dykes attention…..

Yep

From what I understand, there are several old SWC coaches who have houses out at Horseshoe Bay and many have a regular golf game most days of the week. If you go hand out at the clubhouse, you’re likely to run in to a great number of old coaches.
McWilliams, Dykes, Sloan, Slocum (i think), etc. etc.

by imisswesttexas on Dec 16, 2009 8:26 AM CST up reply actions

This is true…I think Gene Stallings makes an appearance or two for golf there each spring, too.

I was lucky enough...

To have Mack Brown introduce me to Spike Dykes here in Austin about two years ago. Spike seemed to just be retired.

James Gray is about to be interviewed on 104.3 here in about 20 minutes.

very cool

Gray is from my time at Tech so I’m really happy to see he is doing well. Maybe his son will be at Tech someday. Aledo has a great team this season and to think his son is only a sophmore RB.

Really back`

I would like to know about Billy Taylor, Joe Barnes, Rodney Allison (since he has left Tennesse), and Curtis Jordan. They were on some great teams we had in the 70’s.

Dick Winder

I can confirm that coach Winder is retired and lives in Pecan Plantation just outside of Granbury. Also, he spends some time volunteering with the GHS coaching staff helping out a little.

very cool I've designed houses fo that area

Never understood why Dick Winder just up and left Tech to join John Blake’s staff at OU. I was a student at the time and Dick coached a very effecient offense. I can see going to OU with the name recognition but he had a good thing going at Tech. I also remembered that Spike had the opportunity to go out and find a great offensive mind to replace Winder—and what does he do, he promotes his son Rick (who is at Arizona now with Sonny). Ultimately Dick got fired with Blake’s staff and Rick got fired with Spike’s Staff— since then, we gained the almighty Pirate!!

Agree. Never understood either

But our family knows them a little. If I see him over the holidays up in Granbury, I’ll do some investigating. Always enjoyed watching him. He wasn’t a coach for the faint of heart. Pretty hard-assed, but the players loved him. Pure old-school coach.

Gabe Rivera (Senor Sack) used to be a San Antonio Spurs ticket holder back when they played at the Alamodome. I’m not sure if he’s still around though.

Passed Away

Senor Sack passed away a few years ago. I worked with one of his cousins and he always had a great attitude, even after his accident.

by cweber7377 on Dec 16, 2009 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

That accident was tragic. He had his whole career ahead of him and was a beast in the making.

on a lighter note I still can’t figure out how he got in and out of a Datsun Z

Joe Barnes

Joe was from Big Lake, Texas. His teams won the Grey Cup in 77 and 83 and he was the MVP in 83.
