Surprise! UT's Monroe gets DWI dropped.

http://espn.go.com/blog/big12/post/_/id/8533/d-j-monroes-dwi-charge-dismissed

UT's D.J. Monroe got his DWI charge dismissed.  Huh.  I'm not surprised, is anyone else?  The only thing I'm surprised about is that it took this long.  I guess because it was in Hays County, they had to pull a couple extra strings instead of taking care of it at the scene if it were in Travis County.  The DWI charge got dropped to "obstructing a passageway."  I'm not sure exactly what that is, but it sounds like something any college kid would love to be charged with at 2 a.m. after a party instead of DWI.

Mack suspended Monroe for the last three games of the season, but will evaluate the situation and decide whether or not to let him play against Alabama.  Hmmm.  I wonder what he will decide.  Let's see what kind of integrity and class this guy has.  He instituted a "zero tolerance" policy in 2007, so lets see if that is still in effect. (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2962514)

So in case there was any doubt, this just further proves that if you are a star at UT, the law does not apply to you.  I know there have been plenty of cases, but the othe one from this year that sticks out in my mind is when Sergio Kindle ran into an apartment building "texting", left the scene to sleep it off, and then turned himself in to his coaches/team lawyer in the morning to get the story straight.  I guess this is what they instructed him to do after his previous DWI in 2007.

The only ‘zero tolerance’ I remember was the kid who made fun of Obama on Facebook. The damn fool ought to know that Austin is not the place to do anything anti-liberal..

Racist and anti-liberal

Two completely different things.

I didn’t pay that much attention to the whole deal at the time. All I recall is that it was anti-Obama. To the extent it may have been racially motivated, I agree 100%. But by that I mean true racism as opposed to a violation of PC that may have been wrongfully characterized as racism – kinda like the confederate flag is often characterized as racist when it is not intended as such.

To explain, I’m a voting member of the Creek Indian Nation. I have some personal insight into racism in its true form.

by TechFirst on Dec 21, 2009 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

Well it was a racial slur that I will not repeat

So we can just leave it at that.

Politics

Hays County is just south of Travis County (Austin). San Marcos is the largest city and is around 35,000 in population. The District Attorney is Sherri Tibbe, a ’94 graduate of UH law school. Her First Assistant in charge of criminal matters is Fred Weber, a ’95 graduate of UT. Both Tibbe and Weber have reported to the State Bar that the principle location of their practice is Austin.

Nothing

Stephen Hamby’s situation isn’t even remotely similar to D.J. Monroe’s.

It seems Bill Belichick is a Romer disciple as well.

by Campeador on Dec 20, 2009 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

True.

I’m betting it was a fight that Hamby quickly ended.

You're correct...

too many seem to forget how the justice system works. It may not always be full proof but it’s the best it can be compared to other countries.

From the glass house...

I seem to remember a certain receiver now playing for San Fransico whose only two roomates were both arrested for drug dealing. However, by some miracle said receiver “knew nothing” about it, and escaped without a blemish. I’m sorry but I knew when my college roomates brought home fat chicks, and if both of them were drug dealers I would certainly of known that. Let’s put down the rocks.

by TTUMAR on Dec 21, 2009 9:17 AM CST reply actions

Whose side are you on?

When you actually have a life you do not always know what is going on with your roomates which is why when I came home to about 150 people in my house one night, I called the cops, and along with my other room mates kicked out the room mate that was throwing the party. Or when I was sharing a single room in the dorm I had no idea my room mate was a pot head, and was keeping and probably dealing stuff out of our room.

by Raider75 on Dec 21, 2009 11:57 AM CST up reply actions

Your kidding right....?

It was widely known on Tech campus that certain members of the 2007/2008 team used and dealt in pot, including number 5 ( my second favorite Tech player ever). If this wasn’t true, I would suspect that LPD would not have arrested them. The bottom line is that it happens everywhere, just ask Zebbie. Believe me, I want to hate UT every chance I get, I just don’t want to be a hypocrite while I’m doing it.

There are enough reasons to hate Texas without jealous back bitting. If you need some creative help we can start with their arrogant fans (most of whom never attended), or their arrogant, whinning, used carsalesman with butterteeth, coach.

by TTUMAR on Dec 21, 2009 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

Even if everyone on the 07-09 teams were dealing, Tech still doesn’t hold a candle to UT in terms of societal rejects playing on their MBB and football teams for the last 15-20 years.

#5's roomate

situation was being handled by the D.E.A., not the LPD. I’m guessing the D.E.A doesn’t give a crap who you are, and if # 5 was involved in any way, we all would know. They were watching that kid (Sanders) for a long time before his arrest. As for Monroe, I’m not surprised one bit. Mac is the best at politics.

Agreed

‘Widely-known rumors’ mean exactly squat in the legal prosecution field. OTOH, when hard evidence leads both an officer and a magistrate to reach a finding of probable cause of DWI………..

I’m making the assumption that the DWI arrest was preceded by the standardized field sobriety tests used by virtually every agency in the state, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test which looks for involuntary movements of the eyes in an intoxicated person – no subjective interpretation involved. And then there’s the Intoxylizer machine. If he blew into the machine and passed, he wouldn’t have been charged.

If he refused to blow into the machine, that itself raises a red flag. Why would a sober driver refuse to blow when that alone results in an automatic license suspension for six months – even if the charges are later dismissed? Every suspected drunk gets that warning both orally and in writing when asked to blow. He has to sign the written warning and the whole thing is on tape.

Anyway, I’m not on a mission against this kid. Hell, I was sure guilty more than once when I was his age. It just irks the devil out of me to have big shots try to peddle their influence in criminal matters. And I don’t have any respect for any prosecutor that caves to influence.

if you were a student during crabtrees years you knew…but you had to be a student, none of you older alumns would know, but unfortunatly its true. no doubt in anyones mind what was going on with crabtree and his roommates…

Sadly

I can confirm #5’s involvement with pot. One of my best friends who is a girl (odd how girlfriend would sound weird there) lived next to them at the Centre (the apartments) and said on numerious occasions she and friends would go to their apartment to find a pile of bud sitting on their coffee table.

3 game suspension for DWI

is the norm around UT. Monroe was suspended for 3 games. It wasn’t even a DWI. I dont see the point. Its not like we needed Monroe or that he is an integral part of our team and we can’t operate without him. Marquise Goodwin is basically the exact same player.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

I guess wehn Mack adopted a 0 tolerance policy in 2007 he didn’t really understand what that meant… or maybe he thought he could keep everything covered up like Sergio Kindle and then not have to follow through on his threat.

"I play football fot UT"

Hays county released the DWI video. LINK

by TechFirst on Dec 26, 2009 9:57 AM CST reply actions

After watching that video, it is a travesty of our justice system that he got away with dwi. 1) I’m pretty sure a Division I athlete can walk a straight line. 2) he admitted to taking tylenol pm on the video and drinking alcohol earlier in the evening after denying to having drunk anything at all. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to think he might have been lying and actually drunk more than that. 3) the kid threw up twice in the cop car and once outside and was talking to himself in the backseat with the officer outside.

Any other college kid would have to suffer the consequences of this decision because they can’t afford the lawyers to get this reduced to almost nothing.

what a joke.
