Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 12.19.09

Missouri Governor Does Not Think Highly of Texas Tech: The Missouri governor will start back-tracking, but when you start a sentence by saying, "I'm not going to say anything bad about ___" then he's going to start saying something bad about someone:
"I'm not going to say anything bad about the Big 12, but when you compare Oklahoma State to Northwestern, when you compare Texas Tech to Wisconsin, I mean, you begin looking at educational possibilities that are worth looking at," Nixon, a Missouri graduate, said "If a significant conference with a long history of academic and athletic excellence talks about you joining them, you shouldn't just say, 'We're from the old Big 8 and I remember when ...
Ryan Hyatt has already suggested that Governor Nixon kiss Texas Tech's ass (he didn't cuss, but I will) and I would concur. I also happen to know a few law school that are some of the higher ups in the Mizzou Legislature and will also convey Hyatt's message.
On a personal note, I'm sure this will turn into who has the better school meme and I think that's one of those circular arguments that you would never win because you'll never be able to convince the party across from you of your point of view ("My school is better than your school" "No it's not, my school is better that your school", etc.). I've always believed that the education that a person receives is more or less dependent on what that person wants to get out of it. For example, if Person A goes to Harvard (or some other fancy school) and decides that he doesn't care about education and just goes through the motions then Person A will probably not be very educated despite having a degree from Harvard. Person B could get an education from State U and put additional time and effort into bettering Person B then that person will have a degree from State U, but probably be more educated. Bottom line, I believe that education is a personal thing, not a thing based on where you went to school.

Game Tonight:
#16/20 Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Wichita St. Shockers
Television: None
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Charles Koch Arena : Wichita, Kansas
Preview: Link :: Game Day Thread: 6:00 p.m. post today
Hostile Shockers: LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that the Red Raiders are preparing themselves for a very hostile crowd in Wichita tonight and here's PF D`Walyn Roberts:
"Our coaches keep telling us to make sure we talk on the court because we aren’t going to be able to hear them when they call out plays and stuff," forward D’walyn Roberts said.
And head coach Pat Knight talks about what to expect from Wichita St. and he likes playing in hostile environments:
"They’re going to pose a lot of problems because they can push the ball up, they defend," Knight said. "Playing in that environment will be tough but we have to."
Snip
"We’ve got to start playing in some hostile environments," Knight said. "Just putting ourselves on the butcher’s block will help us, I think, when we play on the road in the Big 12."
Defensive Raiders: Wichita Eagle's Paul Sullentrop writes that the Shockers can expect a more defensive minded group of Red Raiders and Wichita St. head coach agrees:
"They get out in passing lanes," WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. "They can sit down and guard you. They've got some guys with some length that can block the shot if you don't finish strong around the basket."
Snip
"We've got to eliminate easy baskets that they're going to get, and we've got to get some," Marshall said. "Grinding it out for 40 minutes — they probably have better players on paper."

Scotty Young = Texas APSE Player of the Year. Congrats to Texas Tech QB commit Scotty Young, who was named the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Player of the Year. A huge honor, congrats for sure!
Red Raiders Wary of Spartans: SAEN's Jerry Briggs writes that Texas Tech is very wary of Michigan St. and defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill explains:
"I know what type of players they recruit at Michigan State and the players they recruit in the Big Ten," Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill said. "They have a very talented football team. Their staff, they do a great job on the road (recruiting) and they do a great job coaching."
Spartans Embracing the Challenge: Two articles from the great state of Michigan regarding the Spartans embracing the challenge of playing without suspended players: freep.com's Shannon Shelton and mlive.com's Howie Beardsley. Here's Michigan St. QB Kirk Cousins:
"This has tested our leadership, tested us as players and how we respond to adversity," he said. "But at the same time, we’re very excited about the opportunity we have.
"We’re a 6-6 team going to play in a January bowl game on a Saturday night as the only game on prime-time. Bottom line is, we need to play well. There’s going to be a lot of eyes on Michigan State, and we need to represent well and win the game."
And MSU head coach Mark Dantonio looks at the Red Raiders:
"When you look at them offensively, you look at them in five facets," Dantonio said. "What do they do? They run the zone. They run a little bit of full bubble, a draw. They run a pass game, naturally. They run the three-step pass game, and they run the screen game. And those are the things that you have to stop. They do those things over and over and over."
Miscellaneous Links: Rivals.com's All Big 12 freshman team features SS Cody Davis and WR Alexander Torres (congrats to both!) . . . Dr. Saturday's Matt Hinton nominates Graham Harrell as one of the quarterback of the decade (I previously missed Michael Crabtree's nomination for receiver) . . .

Did Nixon just take a swing at us?
I’m all for taking swings at the “show me state”. His comment isn’t even relevant.
" Answers -- Become Resources."
Without Questions; There are limited Resources...
Nixon really shouldn't have said that.
I’m all for the general point he was trying to make, that (historically) the perception of academics in the Big Ten is generally perceived to be amongst the highest in the country. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with Seth here that education is relative, and each school’s own mission is unique, a fact that often doesn’t get treated with the respect it deserves. But, a lot of times, in education like in college football, perception IS reality, for better or worse. If people think you’re a better school, you start to reap the rewards. The Big Ten could do that for Mizzou, so his point is well taken in that regard.
But there was absolutely NO need to call out any schools in the Big 12. It devalued the point he was actually trying to make.
I am amazed at the words of the Govenor of Missouri !!
His own words reflect the quality of his education. If someone has to trash another to enhance their own value, they likely have little.
Regarding Seth’s comment vis a vis where one is educated. I took notice of the many other engineers that I worked with during my career based on where they earned their degrees. I saw no patterns. A good engineer was simply a good engineer. Some of the guys that I worked with who graduated from engineering schools with great reputations almost could not tie their shoes as engineers. Like most market branding, it is salesmanship to get one’s enrollment, and to place graduates…there is some value in that, but it does not make the player…we each have to do that one our own abilities.
I will be happy to see the game vs WSU completed, I am weary of reading about it. It is a good test for the Red Raiders, not much more than that, let’s get this one in the books.
Another good basketball test was passed last evening by the Lady Raiders. They finished the game vs UCLA at Pauley Pavilion winning by one. This is a very good win on the road for the Lady Raiders. Like the men, they are beginning to attract attention to their games.
All the talk about the Spartans and their reactions to their circumstantial roster losses give rise to thoughts of TTU earlier in the season when we played w/o any DE depth. Their circumstances can work in their favor as they rise to meet the occasion. Like a lot of these meetings, it often turns into who wants to play football that determines an outcome.
Missouri can lick jello
Out of thunder $&$'s &$. If the Big 12 gets 4 Texas schools and loses an also ran, that’s progress. It’s not like they’re Nebraska or OU. Academic reputation for a state school is bull shit. They all have to take so many in state kids. Academic reptation = me giving a turd what some left wing professor looks down his nose and thinks of me. F U Gubner O’ Missouri.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
Why Missouri won't join the Big Ten
one word….recruiting…I looked at the current rosters of Missouri(Big 12) vs. Iowa(Big 10). I purposely excluded Ohio St. and Michigan for the reason that they are more nationally recognized and should be able to recruit on name alone.
Currently, Iowa has two players from Texas while Missouri has over 30. Don’t see the Texas pipeline continuing if Missouri moves to the Big 10. The data doesnt support it.
Who knows which big honking state U is better than the other?
They’re all industrial diploma mills. Don’t start on research dollars, because if you’re getting a BA, you never get near that activity. Anyway, the real question is would you rather live in Missouri or Texas? With all due respect to Harry Truman, I’ll take Texas.
Classless jerk
If a state has this classless jerk for a governor, I automatically lose any respect for their state school.
LOL
…Mizzou can whore themselves out all they want. If they think they can get a better deal in the Big 10, take it. I’ve got a feeling, they think they’re playing the Big 12 for fools right now. They need to think again.
Classic.
It seems Bill Belichick is a Romer disciple as well.
I have family in MO,
therefore I’ve spent entirely too much time there. “I’m not going to say anthing bad about” Mizzou, but I always feel that the level of intelligence has dropped signicantly once I get up there. A governor saying that only proves my point. Screw ’em, let them become the Baylor of the Big 10 (Minus any and all good academic reputations that is)
The gov of Missouri should know better than to name specific schools. I won’t sit here and try to defend the quality of education I received at Tech, nor will I try to downplay the quality of an education at another college. Like Seth said, it’s a circular argument that can’t really be won. Is it harder to get in to some places? Yes. Do some places get more research money? Yes. Do some places have faculty with degrees from other nice places? Yes. Does that make your education “better”? No. It makes it more marketable…but it’s what you do with the education once you leave that matters. I know a few folks from Sam Houston State -not considered elite ; ) – who are making an absolute killing with a technology company in Dallas. I mean, huge killing. Live in a 4,000 sq ft house in Northpark kind of killing. I also know a gal in our company who went to Dartmouth who is an absolute dolt and only keeps her job because she does just enough to not get fired.
The only place where the degree origin matters is networking. If you have a solid alumni base, it helps being connected. But the second a Mizzou grad leaves his state and heads to, say, Florida, the people down there have no clue if Mizzou is great or not. Nor do they really care. Can he do the job? Yes? Great, you’re hired.
I’ve never hired/not hired someone based on where the degree comes from. I could care less where they graduated, so long as they graduated (if the job requires it).
I am sad to hear of this
I know Missouri is a good school, but so are the rest of those in the Big-12. They all basically “teach” the same classes and distribute the same information. It is entirely upon the student to “get it”, no matter which school he/she attends. Despite the fact Governor Nixon desires Missouri’s affiliation to change from the Big-12 to the Big-“11”, he should never have made derogatory comments toward any other institutions. The ONLY reason the Big-“11” schools receive higher grades on education than the Big-12 schools is because most who rate such things come from the same general area-the north and east. I doubt any graduate of Texas Tech, UT, OU, OSU, A&M (Yes, even them), or any of the north schools, would be willing to exchange that degree with one from a Big-“11” school. No, the ONLY reason the “I cannot tell a lie” governor want the change is $$$ M $$$ O $$$ N $$$ E $$$ Y $$$. PERIOD! And like others above, I feel if Missouri were to leave the Big-12, their “LINK” to Texas would end and they would therefore struggle for survival in most sports. So, MU really needs to take a long look at this and reconsider such a move, for I feel that while they might be considered better academically after such a move, they will degrade big time in athletics, which helps in drawing the attention to them in the first place when their teams excel, which probably will not happen after a move.
