More Mangino Fire
This is not really Tech related, beyond the fact that we play Kansas, but this article about Mangino's alleged abuse of KU players is probably the most tangible evidence I've seen to date. The hole in this kids palm is huge and that thing had to hurt for two months!
The fact two named players corroborated what this kid had to say lends even more credibility to it. I don't really know how common this sort of thing is (physical wounds vs. discipline without) in college sports, but I am guessing it's a lot more common than we'll ever know. These kids are lorded over wth threats of reduced playing time or revocation of a scholarship on a regular basis, no doubt. I can easily see how a 20-year-old feels powerless to do or say anything since the HC holds the key to their athletic future.
So. Does he stay or go?

I know that feeling
In HS offseason our AD had everyone do the long dip and monkey bars in mid april. Just so happened to be the hottest day that month in central texas and the steel bars were extremely hot. Everyone complained that it was burning but did they listen? No! The entire boy’s athletics had burns like this covering their hands, including the baseball team. Played against the #3 ranked baseball team the next day for the district championship. You better believe there were some pissed off parents. We ended up beating Maypearl that next day, and the AD kept his job. As bad as I hate to see this, it doesnt surprise me. And btw, bear crawls are dreadful after the first 100 yards or so!
People don't get in trouble for doing the right thing!
What a load of crap! Try and organize a hundred boys who all think they are god’s gift to football. I ran into this exact situation. A kid regularly didn’t make it to athletic period on time and never had his workout clothes. So every day he would just sit out and take up space. He was a fat lazy slob who just wanted to be called a football player. Finally I bear crawled him so he would either get with the program or I could stop being his baby sitter. He got a blister and went home crying to mom. The parents then wanted to get all over my case. What ever happened to being held accountable for your actions? Nobody makes these people play football. Nor do they make them go to a specific school. I don’t know about know everyone else here, but I graduated in ‘98 and I am just just this year going to finish paying off my student loans. These guys GET a FREE EDUCATION and GET to PLAY. Don’t give me all this boo hoo crap. If it’s that bad go study and earn an academic scholarship or pay for it all yourself! Otherwise shut your mouth and do what your told! It is a priviledge to participate in athletics at any level. I do not agree with taking personal shots at family members, but if you are getting a free education and all the luxuries that come with being a D-1 football player the least you could do is follow directions and stay out of trouble. There are plenty of other people willing to fill that position and follow directions. For someone to take up a scholarship that could be given to someone who might appreciate it and then throw a fit for having to follow a given set of rules is disgusting. I don’t feel sorry for this player nor any other that thinks they are so special they can get a free education and do whatever the hell they want without any consequences.
Really?! A blister on his hand is the worst pain he has ever felt?! And he got it after crawling SEVERAL yards on a turf field?! Also Mangino was walking alongside of him. That had to have been equally as difficult and painful for Mangino. (that was a joke) The fact that he immediately took pictures of it also goes to show that he was plotting this out the whole time. Who takes pictures of there injuries? Kipp blongs in California. Nobody was complaing when Kansas was winning. Maybe if more players were held accountable for their actions there would be a lot fewer arrests in college and pro football.
My coaches in high school.....
wouldn’t have given a damn if I got a boo-boo on my hand because they made me do bear crawls. Which I did, very often. (Bear crawls, that is). If I had complained about the skin on my hands, frankly, they would have called me a pussy. Right to my face. I’m not saying Mangino doesn’t cross the line, but football is voluntary. You can quit anytime.
¡Viva los Matadores!
I played(HS) in the 80's
in HS and I can tell you that things were a whole lot different then. Coaches could beat you like a dog if they preferred. I was fortunate in that we won most of the time and most of the staff treated us like FB players and not animals. Lots of teams don’t even have 2 a days anymore and there are restrictions that didn’t exist when I was growing up. Players may have gotten a little soft as time progresses. I agree a coach can cross the line but I also agree that there are 2 sides to every story. If you’re going to play at the college level you had better be prepared for what comes with it. I don’t defend Mangino’s actions or methods but college football isn’t HS and lots of money and job security rides heavily on a teams success so athletes will be pushed much harder. In the end if you want to play at D-1 level in the Big 12 you had better be prepared to muster up your best level of play or quit.
Try reading 'Meat on the Hoof' for a different perspective
I read that book back in the late 60’s about how Darrel Royal brutalized players and used induced injuries as a way to get rid of scholarship players that weren’t panning out. It makes this stuff seem like child’s play. Funny how a person’s won/loss record makes a difference in what is ‘acceptable’.
Only one hand?
It seems odd that it was only his right hand. Seems like he was a big cumbersome lineman who was favoring his right for some reason while doing these bear crawls. I’m no expert on artificial turf, but it seems like there would not be a huge difference in temperature over a distance of 2-3 feet so I would expect burns on both hands. Seems like he was just putting extra weight on that hand and the friction caused a blister. Can’t really say I feel sorry for the guy, especially since all he had to do was show up a few minutes earlier and step on a scale to avoid it… it’s not like he missed a tackle in team practice or a game and Mangino went nuts on him.

times have changed
but you gotta consider there are two sides to this story. IMO, i find it hard to believe that missing weigh-in was the only reason for the bear-crawls.
reading that article, my initial thought was either there was something else that went on to get bear-crawl punishment/conditioning or Mangino was sending a message.
that said, the part about burning his other hand was a little over the top. but as was stated above, college football is a voluntary sport. you can quit whenever you want for whatever reason you want.
also, if it was so damn hot on the field, why wasn’t he wearing gloves?
I see both sides,
but have to say that when the player complained of it hurting, he could have taken a glance. Then made him run 500 miles or so instead haha. Granted, the hand isnt that bad, but it doesnt surprise me that this is becoming a big deal.

The witch hunt is over
At least he wasn’t burned at the stake.
It seems Bill Belichick is a Romer disciple as well.
I really think the thing with the had was going a bit far. Not anti-discipline at all, but at what cost? Pretend for a second this kid came down with MRSA from that. I ran my share of bleachers and gassers for penalties and such during HS, but I was never phyically hurt doing it. Getting hurt in practice as a result of normal activity is one thing, but I do think this is another. Maybe I’m getting soft in my old age. I don’t, however, think he should have been forced to resign over all this stuff.
Maybe a bit far
The thing for me is how Mangino and his temper only became unacceptable in the middle of a losing season. This supposedly happened in 2002. Did the player go to the AD then? If not, why bring it up now? If so, then there’s more here that’s not being told.
Nevertheless, it seems to me just an excuse to get rid of him.

My views on this issue aren't a secret; I think he was a sadistic bastard who forgot the 'love' in 'tough love'
but it’s not like he was an unknown quantity coming in, and he certainly didn’t seem to be under fire for his methods when he was 12-1. Much as I think he should have been out on his ass for the way he treated players, I’m aware that the only reason he got forced out was because he went 0-7 down the stretch and hadn’t kissed enough ass in the Kansas Athletics Department to cushion his fall from grace. I can’t see how Kansas comes out of this any better than Mangino does.
