"I’m done," Smith said of the recruiting process. "I’ve made my decision."
The 6-foot-7, 275-pound defensive end played this season at Butler (Kan.) Community College, where he was credited with 74 tackles, including 261/2 behind the line and 14 sacks. Smith also spent one year apiece at the universities of California and Arizona, redshirting at Cal and sitting out a mandatory year at Arizona after transferring.
Smith said his decision to sign with Tech was influenced somewhat by Tech senior Daniel Howard, who also went to Butler and plays the same position.
"He knew where I was coming from," Smith said, "so it was pretty cool."

The comments made on the AJ site seem to be coming from young, not so intelligent students who know nothing about the history of Texas Tech. This year’s basketball team is much better than those for the last several years, when Bobby Knight spent less and less time recruiting good players. His son has gone to the JC route to make quick improvements and bring this team up to where he can begin concentrating on high school stars, recruiting them to make lasting improvements to the team that will carry over for years to come. I think he is doing as good, even better than we would have expected. The team this year should be good enough to make the post season, be it the NIT or the NCAA. Either way, it is a step up, with future years looking bright. Less cynicism and more support is what these kids need and deserve. In learning, they will tend to make mistakes that can be addressed and decreased or eliminated. Congratulations to Texas Tech on a great improvement and here is hoping they continue to improve. Also, the women are starting to show the type improvement that will lend them well in the Big-12 play as well as down the road. May we all show our appreciation for the hard work and dedication the coaches and players are showing, while also upping our expectations of better results as the team matures and continues to improve their overall play.

Yes, welcome to TTU !!
Smith is a great sign for the coaching staff. There is so much hype accompanying him that it is a distraction. I hope he comes in and plays as well as he can from the beginning, I hope he enjoys being a Red Raider, and that his gain academically is satisfying.
We all need to keep in mind that the evaluation that earns him multiple stars has nothing to do with the evaluation on part of the coaching staff that resulted in their efforts to sign him. It is kind of like TTU’s men’s basketball team that was ranked 16 last week, a snap shot of the moment.
