Recruiting on the High Seas :: DE Dartwan Bush

Recruiting is truly heating up as Brazoswood HS (Freeport, TX) DE Dartwan Bush (6-1/245) gave the Texas Tech coaching staff a verbal commitment yesterday.

Follow me after the jump for a more on Dartwan, including a link to some free film and just to tease you a bit, Dartwan may be the quickest defensive end I've seen get down the line of scrimmage, especially considering his size.

Star-divide

The Player Speaks

Bush wasn't available for comment, but his high school coach, Dean DeAtley,  was available and had some very complimentary things to say about Texas Tech and what type of player Bush is.  Per LAJ's Don Williams:

"A couple of (reasons) he said were he liked his host, and he really felt at ease with the players,’’ DeAtley said. "And there’s a quarterback from Friendswood (Tech freshman Jacob Karam) who we’ve played from this area, and he said he was a real upbeat, positive guy. That helped a little bit, too.’’

Snip

"I think he liked coach Leach,’’ DeAtley said. "He spoke with him a week or so ago, and it wasn’t a hard sell. It was a pretty enjoyable conversation. I don’t think it was too much of a hard sell on the recruiting visit. It was real enjoyable, all the conversations he had. There wasn’t a whole lot of pressure on him.’’

The Scouting Report

Brazoswood has a website with a player page for Dartwan and there is some free film available.  The other interesting thing is that on Bush's high school page, he's listed as running a 4.60 40-yard dash.  The recruiting websites say differently, but watching that film, I think he's closer to 4.60 than 4.89.  Bush gets down the line of scrimmage incredibly quick, one of the quickest accelerations for a defensive end that I've seen.

I'm just a tad bit excited.

The article linked above has a bit on Bush from his coaches and from the Brazoria County's The Facts' Joel Luna.  DeAtley had this to say about the type of player that Bush is:

"He’s a real speed guy — a lot of quickness, a lot of explosiveness,’’ DeAtley said. "He really works with his hands well. I think he’ll be successful on the next level, and he’s a great kid, too, a high character kid and a lot of fun to be around.’’

And in the Luna article, DeAtley said that if Bush was just a bit taller, he would have had offers from all over the place:

"We knew he was a great talent and I am very happy for him," DeAtley said. "I know that he is a good kid with great character and good things happen to good people. I also know that if he would have been 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-4, somebody would have picked him up a year ago.

"He did all the little things and was a great pass rusher for us," DeAtley said. "He used his hands real well and we hope he continues to grow."

Sometimes, it's not about the height or weight, but rather about production on the field, and Bush had this stat line for his senior season:

81 tackles
30 tackles for loss
15 sacks
5 forced fumbles
1 fumble recovery

I am really liking this recruiting class. Looks to be solid and it should be really good for our defense.

Plus it’s nice to see a freshman DE. Relying solely on JUCO transfers can sometimes bite you in the rear.

Yes, we need a continuous recruiting effort for hs players at all positions to develop and maintain depth.

Recruiting has matured in Mike Leach’s tenure to get that every year now. The JC’s can and do help plug holes.

The growth in recruiting will continue as the players who are offered and commit start showing more talent and speed….expect the rankers to add stars to our recruits.

Yeah, it’s kinda like making money – you’ve gotta have some to make some.

Very Nice

Yes indeed this class is awesome. Defense should be very solid in years to come. I must say that our recruiting is on a huge rise and if we can manage to get into BCS bowl in the near future Tech will be a 5* destination.

+1 I think we are just on the verge. I would like to get 5star talent, but I think Leach and company do a fine job with what they get.

what's up Ruff?

I dont’ generally have tea with Ruff, but let’s try to read the tea leaves from defensive recruiting. Before we do that, Ruff, please move Whitlock around so he isn’t double teamed and taken out of plays. Now on to tea leaves.
Ruff is going for speed at all of the outside positions DE, OLB, and CB. This is good for the Big 12 style offenses. It looks like the inside guys will be the run stuffers and for a Bermuda Triangle of DT, NT, and MLB. A pretty good base to start from.
Ruff is also recruiting safetys that are like OLBs so it’s like having an extra LB on the field. I think we’ll see more nickle back packages and more 3-4 packages. This is something we talked about on here about two years ago. I think Ruff realizes that we didn’t have the team speed necessary to be effective with that and he is only now getting the recruits he wants.
If we maintain the speed at the above positions we’ll be vulnerable to getting run over on the outside, unless we are stunting/blitzing more. Think Miami defense circa the mid eighties. I’m no Kreskin but I think Ruff is showing his plan: get the speed up so he can have a more attacking defense. Good bye to “bend but don’t break”.

I wonder where Bush will be playing in two years.

If the data above is accurate, his 4.89 forty time does not jive with what I have read in the past for DE speeds at TTU….now, he may not be that fast for 40 but could be very fast for 10 to 15 which, for the most part is what we want out of a DE who is playing contain and get to the passer. He could be vulnerable on sweeps, though.

his size says DT or NG to me, if he spends some time with Beanie.

Hopefully

He has a chip on his shoulder about not being heavily recruited due to his height…..we do well with those guys. I love the thought of Ruff dialing up the pressure.

Impressive

I wish I could find more (free) video of him.

He looks like a beast.

It seems Bill Belichick is a Romer disciple as well.
