Texas Tech has suspended coach Mike Leach from all duties, including coaching the Valero Alamo Bowl, after receiving a complaint from a player and his parents.

"At Texas Tech, all such complaints are considered as serious matters, and as a result, an investigation of the incident is underway," the school said in a release. "The investigation into this matter will continue in a thorough and fair manner."

Defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill has been named interim head coach and will coach the team against Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl.

The school received a complaint from the unnamed player and his parents regarding his treatment by Leach after an undisclosed injury.

The school declined further comment because it was considered a personnel matter.

WTF this has got to be a bad joke right?

by ST04 on Dec 28, 2009 4:07 PM CST reply actions

Oops

Posted too early on my phone. Haha. Mistake by TTU. Must be a serious allegation. What happened until innocent until proven guilty? I’d be offended if I were Leach. Did Mangino get suspended during his investigation? Seems to me to be a dumb move by the university. Aweful timing.

by RAIDERdweb on Dec 28, 2009 4:16 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

leach must of pissed somebody off, ie president, chancellor or board member…

by chad0454 on Dec 28, 2009 4:24 PM CST reply actions

Early rumors say, Adam James. Leach made him sit in an equipment bin or something.

by boar_amour on Dec 28, 2009 4:25 PM CST reply actions

who is reporting that?

by ST04 on Dec 28, 2009 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

Shit that means the James’ will bring down two university football programs SMU and TTU.

by ST04 on Dec 28, 2009 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

I’m reading this second or third hand, but it was apparently posted by a friend of the James family on Rivals yesterday, and it anticipated an investigation over it.

by boar_amour on Dec 28, 2009 4:28 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe he will just be suspended for the bowl game and come back next year. If he was unhappy about it he should transfer.

In the words of Dan Hawkins “its big 12 football”

by ST04 on Dec 28, 2009 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn’t quote Dan Hawkins on that…

by davereid on Dec 28, 2009 5:23 PM CST up reply actions

Full quote, I don't know where this comes from exactly or who exactly posted it but here goes:

“No surprise here. My dad talked this morning to Brik Brinker’s parents who are some family friends of ours this morning at church and there could be an investigation at Texas Tech under way soon. Some of you know that I played football at Frenship High School in West Texas and the Brinkers are some of our family friends. Brik played at Frenship and is now at Texas Tech.

Anyways, my dad asked if they were going to the Alamo Bowl and they said no, that Brik was left off the team (no surprise, hamstring pull) but he told my dad that Adam James , son of Craig James, had a concussion this year. Toward the end of the year he wasn’t practicing and Leach was not happy. Leach made him walk around the practice fields every day all day during practice. Apparently Leach was pissed that James showed up at practice with sunglasses on and when asked why he was wearing sunglasses to workout. James said he was sensitive to light and the doctors instructed him to wear them due to symptoms of the concussion.

Leach then instructed Adam James to take out all of the equipment in the equipment bins and sit throughout practice inside of them. He had to do this 2 or 3 times. (Those of you that are wondering, the equipment bins are big huge bins on wheels that hold footballs, towells, pads, etc…) Well The Pony Express caught word of this and wasn’t happy. The NCAA was called and Mr. Brinker said that there was going to be an investigation coming soon. It wouldn’t surprise me if Adam enrolled at SMU this next coming season. What a piece of sh*t. With everything Mangino went through at Kansas, Leach may not be safe. Who knows, don’t shoot the messenger."

by boar_amour on Dec 28, 2009 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

I just read that same thing. But, also it was from a friend of a friend.

by Strackwell on Dec 28, 2009 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

Witchhunt

I think this was just the excuse the administration needed to get rid of Leach. For a long time Art Brilles, Spike Dykes backers have been trying to get rid of him and finally they have their chance. Well end of all the hopes for a great season next year and in the near future I guess. I mean which coach would really want to come here after seeing how our school treated leach. Who the heck is Adam James? We don’t need that cry baby here anyway (may be i am being unreasonable here, but just my frustration).

by jef on Dec 28, 2009 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

I would rather have leach than briles honestly.

by ST04 on Dec 28, 2009 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

Resignation--HOPE NOT!

We need to heard both sides. What I hope happens is the fans and team get behind Leach if he sat him in an equipment bin—not a big deal to me. If that happens, it will help the team and recruiting.

by BiggestRaiderFan on Dec 28, 2009 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

Craig James

ESPN should not allow him to be the analyst on the Alamo Bowl

by jeffinhouston on Dec 28, 2009 4:42 PM CST reply actions

Overreact much?

I would say calm down to everyone. For one, Mangino had a history of mistreating players. If these rumors are true, this is the first instance I have heard of Leach mistreating a player, thus there should be no need for resignation. A suspension over the bowl game would be punishment enough. If anything I see Leach being offended at the overreaction. There could definitely be more to this story, but I don’t see a single instance of punishing being that big a deal. The Mangino incident must have made everyone all sensitive, but I wouldn’t compare this to his case. As I said before, I think Tech should have waited to act until they had all the facts and after the investigation cleared up any alleged mistreatment. Dumb of the University to act so fast. Now you lose your head coach for a bowl game that could build great momentum for next year. Unless the allegations are much more serious than we’ve heard so far, I think this is all overblown.

by RAIDERdweb on Dec 28, 2009 4:42 PM CST reply actions

Gerald Myers is an idiot

Obviously he’s wanted to have a reason to get rid of Leach since the contract negotiations. Suspending a coach before an investigation is conducted?…really?? I know the players and his staff have Leach’s back but the administration…not so much. Leach will resign after being treated like this…and with him, all our recruits and everything we’ve built since 2002 under Leach. This sucks.

by Wreck Em on Dec 28, 2009 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

And Leach doesn’t suck up to him. I think Myers and company were looking for a chance and finally they have a chance to grab Leach by the you know what. I think the Tech admin really want some low budget guy who will help tech finish may be fifth in the Big XII south and go to a bowl game once in a while. So much media attention and respect that Tech and Leach were getting was probably too much for them. They would much rather have someone like Briles, Sonny Dykes or some nobody who will bring long term mediocrity to Tech and suck up to the admin bosses. I hope I am just overreacting!

by jef on Dec 28, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions

Can this team not freaking make national news for anything positive???!! I’m baffled as to how we continue to make headlines for stupid, ridiculous things such as contract holdouts, fat girlfriend comments, and now this. This is stupid. Administration owes it to the fans for some type of explanation.

I am just hoping this is overblown and everyone gets on the same page next year.

I’m shocked though it was Adam James. Craig has always been a staunch supporter of the program and we’ll no longer have that "voice"to continue to promote the University. We know ESPN has their homer teams…..nice to know we had someone at our side.

You don’t suspend a coach unless you have a REALLY good reason to do it. This is not good at all. Could care less about the bowl game, but recruiting will be an issue (potentially). Other coaches will use this starting…now…

Independence Bowl Announcers

Paraphrasing the announcer of the Independence Bowl (not Ron Franklin but the other guy) after the announced Leach suspension, “If that’s true, I’d be surprised if Leach is the coach at Texas Tech next year”.

by natkcole on Dec 28, 2009 5:10 PM CST reply actions

Quote from the gurus announcing the Independence Bowl...

“…and if this allegation is true, you should be surprised to see Leach coaching at Texas Tech next year.”

This makes absolutely no since. You know how college kids are. There is no way in hell that Leach mistreated this kid to the degree that his “medical condition” was worse than it used to be.

Here’s what I think happened…

Adam’s dad is a hotshot ESPN announcer. He probably thinks that because his bigshot dad is proud of him that he can do whatever he wants. Everyone knows one of these kids. He wears shades to practice and Leach tells him to take them off. James had a concussion early in the year. This seems to have happened recently. Anyway, James mockingly states that “I have a medical condition, my doctor said I should wear them.” Leach has no tolerance for this immaturity and makes him walk the track during practice, like the kids who acted up in elementary PE class. James puffs up and acts even more immature, so Leach tells him to make a fort out of the equipment boxes. James gets pissed off since Leach humiliates him for being an immature prick and tells his dad. Craig is in the media, so he twists the story to make it seems like an unfortunate story about a young lad in college with an unfortunate medical condition being bullied by big bad Captain Leach.

Effing ridiculous. If this crap, among other stupid crap (I’m talking to you, Gerald Myers) causes Leach to leave Tech, I will personally have a vendetta against our illogical and unreasonable athletic director. In fact, I refuse to call Gerald Myers the athletic director. He’s more of a talking head who somehow found himself in the position he’s in right now.

Just our luck. Right as we were about to turn the corner, Myers picks us up and throws us off a cliff.

by techfan5730 on Dec 28, 2009 5:20 PM CST reply actions

Ha ha and a young lad with a medical condition should not be playing football. When will the Jameses get it through their thick heads? May be they need to correct their mental condition first.

you can assume it's serious

Wouldn’t expect Tech to take such a drastic step without some solid proof of the allegations. If there is ANY truth to the information quoted above, I can see the administration moving quickly to manage the situation. We all feel frustrated and upset over this, but let’s not be hasty until more is known.

It may not be that serious. The top admin hated Leach, they would have been happy to see him go last year, but had to keep him because of alumni pressure. They don’t want any high profile coach around the football program. The football team was getting too big for them and i guess that’s why they want to cut it down to size (hope I am wrong)

dislike how Myers handled Leach’s contract last year, but I’d love to see where all of the top administrators at TT wanted Leach to go. I don’t think that Hance would have fought so hard for Leach if that were the case.

All of the above

Whoever started this will be on my blacklist for a while. I can’t imagine a player complaining about such things anyhow. He must really be a pw’d kid…. oh yea, his dad is pw’d. I wondered why he was kind of negative during Tech’s last game he called. Funny that he and his diaper wearing kid waited until one week before the bowl game to make this accusation. So much for thinking positive about him even though he never showed much while at Tech. If he had a concussion, I do hope he has recovered, but this is beyond reason. Take it like a man. Jeesh! As mentioned by some others, I hope our recruits do not decide to bail because of these rumors. If Leach is cleared, the Tech big whigs had better crawl on their knees and beg forgiveness for dragging Leach, the school and all the players through this. If true, Leach needs to do the same. But, he should never have been suspended until a thorough investigation is completed. I really don’t see this keeping the team from winning the bowl game, though. Just the opposite. I expect them to come out angry and demolish MSU.

Remember, Ed Britton sitting mid field during winter weather studying because he had gotten lax with his academics? What did his dad do? If I remember correctly, as a poster on one of the boards, Mr. B has been a strong supporter for the Red Raider coaching staff for helping their son get through dumb mistakes…

The James family are apparently showing the opposite side of parenthood…my son had better not be “mis-treated” kind of approach…which in the long run turns into meddling…or leading a crusade for better treatment of players with mild concusions. Geepers, do they not know something about the history of football and other contact sports and concusions, knee injuries, back problems, neck problems, coaches working the heck out of players in order to help them see what they are capable of doing?

No, this is not likely to be about a coach who ‘mistreats’ players.

The deal is bad because ‘mistreat’ is relative, subjective, a matter of judgement. People are more and more asked to dumb down and not use judgement, least some form of ‘mistake’ occurs.

Leach had until Monday to write an apology and when he did not, the university felt it had to take action.

If Mr. Pony is acting like a Little League dad, then Leach shouldn't apologize.

I am sure that the ESPN analyst can be a major distraction and the son paid a price for father over-stepping his bounds.

by CRV on Dec 28, 2009 6:39 PM CST up reply actions

So, they gave Leach an ultimatum . . .

and are surprised at the outcome? What a moron it is sitting in the A.D. chair. I suppose this answers any questions regarding the state of the University-Leach relationship after last year’s contract debacle. The A.D. immediately takes up the cause of someone who can say nice things about them on national television as opposed to the person who sells the tickets. And, yes, I do take Leach’s side on this matter. The health of a student-athlete never appears to have been threatened; only the egos of one under-achieving player and his ever-annoying dad.

by CRV on Dec 28, 2009 6:56 PM CST up reply actions

EXACTLY

Even if the allegations are true, the players health was never threatened. So he was put in timeout, who cares! I highly doubt Leach put him in timeout for having a concussion, there was some sort of mouthing off or other reason for him to be put in lockdown. He was in no danger, thus, no story.

Another Brick in the Wall.......

for me and my support of Tech athletics. It starts and comes full circle with Myers but Leach isn’t Bear Bryant. Come back down to earth and exercise a slight amount of decency and convince me that you belong at Tech. It’s something each and every freakin’ off season and it’s WAY past old. Furthermore, he should be smart enough to know that putting the son of an ESPN analyst in a closet could easily come back and bite him in the arse. Send his sissy ass home, but don’t put in in a closet under guard. It’s always something.

by Techsan7 on Dec 28, 2009 7:00 PM CST reply actions

It's seems much more likely that Leach has something to stand on

His atty isn’t going to push for a retraction of the suspension if there is something more serious here, especially given that Leach didn’t see the need to apologize as well. I see a principle here that Leach feels he needs to stand by. This kid was being disciplined and his behavior was probably much more than initially reported. It appears to me that
the admin pushed the button here way to fast
and Leach is fighting this all the way. The admin could have taken a “stand by the coach” position and do an internal investigation until they were satisfied, allowing Leach to coach. Something more is going on here. Or should I say wrong.

by Raiderit on Dec 28, 2009 7:05 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Agreed, but we're not talking about a "normal" administration.

Myers still has a beef with Leach and was probably wetting himself when this came across his desk. He probably helped Craig draft the family statement! It’s time to name the new east side restrooms after Myers, give me a “thanks for your service but move on down the road” title, and kick him to the curb.

by CRV on Dec 28, 2009 7:13 PM CST up reply actions

I guess we wait and see what the fall out will be, it does look as if the University acted in haste. Using the same logic, if they did not, they must think they have information very damaging to their Head Coach and TTU’s reputation. If it turns in reverse, that the information is basically wrong, they will either move someone else or inflate the info to make it worse than it is…

Ugly stuff could happen. Damage control on behalf of TTU is going to be difficult.

by TallMike on Dec 29, 2009 10:53 AM CST up reply actions

+1

My sentiments exactly. Leach isn’t stupid, he knows exactly who he is fighting and he must have some valid reasons to do so. The administration chose the wrong side here. Leach has no prior history to lead them to believe he is in the wrong, give him the benefit of the doubt, not some 20 year old kid and his whining dad.

by RAIDERdweb on Dec 28, 2009 7:11 PM CST reply actions

No win situation

It may be the case that Leach believes he is within his rights to fight this, but a battle between Leach and a Tech administration sponsored by celebrity Craig James and enabled by ESPN would produce a very bad outcome in the “public eye” – no matter who is right.

How in the hell can you make this kind of accusation and not have substantial evidence? What happened to “innocent until proven guilty”? Why in the flying f*** would they do this before a bowl game and not have some sort of internal investigation?

This is a serious accusation. At least two regents, John Scovell and Jerry Turner are Raider lettermen and very successful professionals. Neither have their head in the sand and would allow this IF there was not adequate proof. The ole pirate may have walked the TTU plank for the last time.

We know administration is smart, but perhaps they are being conned very well by the head moron, Gerald Myers, and the James family??? The issue is an investigation has not been initiated so the fact are not all out there. As I said before, where is the due process here? Coach gets suspended but not an official investigation has been opened. Worse…Tech administration look like dips—ts and once again look like amateurs in another public matter. MORONS!!

by WreckerRaider on Dec 28, 2009 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

Does Tech administration realize there is a fan base that is always caught in the middle? They always question why the stadium or arena is never full and it’s because of moments like this. They alienate fans and question the leadership of the face of Texas Tech football.

1) Gerald needs to freakin’ retire with Spike, Dick Winder, and all those old timer good ol boys in Granbury.
2) Leach needs to coach on Saturday.
3) Leach needs to get on the phones ASAP with recruits about this latest incident.

After Saturday, everyone needs to lay low until the Spring Black game. Hopefully Gerald will be gone by that time.

It amazes me

That the administration at Tech has taken this action NOW! The coach-player thing should stay on the field. Nobody was hurt by whatever was done, but the administration has taken it upon themselves to destroy any progress made by football program, maybe even all programs at Tech, over the last 10 years. All this because the son of an ESPN announcer was “mistreated”. Oh, boo hoo. Leach has done some odd things, but even this can’t be construed as bad. He was helping the guy stay out of the light to protect his eyes. But the guy cried to daddy that he was made to stay in a dark room….without any lights on…to protect his eyes…a—-l——o—-n—-e….Ooohhhh, booooo hooooo………… All I can say is regardless of the outcome, I hope he transfers somewhere else, preferably SMU…they really love his dad there. Leach? He will land on his feet and make the team even stronger, despite our really stupid administrators and board members. How DUMB can they be? And this is happening above Myers’ head, believe me.

HR Perspective

Even though people are innocent until proven guilty it’s fairly common in the HR world to suspend someone pending investigation. It’s a way of allowing time to gather all relevant info and interview the parties involved. All that said…I have a bad feeling about this. I don’t want to lose Leach but life will go on either way. I just hate that it happened when recruiting was starting to improve dramatially.

On a brighter note, tamu is getting manhandled.

Leach, Ego/Pride and an Ultimatum...Really???

Seeing the news about the apology demand clears up a lot for me. Leach is obviously not going to “comply” with anything Myers demands him to do.

That much is clear from him wanting full control of football operations back during the offseason last year.

Seems to me that Myers and most involved probably already know this. He is too prideful to write a freaking apology letter, especially when he doesn’t think he did anything wrong.

Myers is a dumbass if he thought a letter was being drafted by coach Leach at any point. If they wanted to resolve and keep it from suspension, then they should have gotten the James family in a meeting with coach Leach and Myers in the same room and has this shit out. Could have avoided all of this.

Why can’t our AD and University heads act in the best interest of our University. Suspending your head coach before a bowl is bad publicity for our University. Ladies and Gentlemen I was in school when Jerry Moore was coach and I tell you going to games with Leach at the helm has been very enjoyable. I wish our Administration would reach down between their legs and get a hand full of hair and pull their a**es. Best of luck to Mike and his family at this time.

by WreckerRaider on Dec 28, 2009 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

is this matter that severe that we start playing the bring in so-and-so game……

1) Tech doesn’t have the money to buy Leach out
2) Leach doesn’t walk away from the money—no jobs out there to pay him that amount
3) Yea,Ruffin could be an interim HC, but he’s not the face of Texas Tech football. Mike Leach is and will only set Ruff up to fail. Mike wouldn’t do that to him.

The only solution is—RETIRE GERALD MYERS! You have been a thorn in my side the last few years. Leave now!!

by WreckerRaider on Dec 28, 2009 7:59 PM CST reply actions

Myers and the board

This is the same board that was going to walk on Leach during contract negotiations until cool head Hance stepped in and made the “deal of the decade” for Tech. This is also the same board that had issues with another rebel named Knight. These guys need to quit “rubber stamping” an athletic head who will not put his ego away. At least these 2 coaches have put thrs on the line for these kids and this university time and again.

by Raiderit on Dec 28, 2009 7:59 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Before this topic goes too far...

It should be noted on here that the suspension was not the decision of the Gerald Myers and the athletic board but it came directly from the chancellor’s office. Just figured I would pass along that information. This doesn’t seem to be any type of flare up of the battle between Leach and Myers.

by RedRaider010 on Dec 28, 2009 8:14 PM CST up reply actions

So you don’t think that the chancellor’s office consulted with Myers before making the decision??? It’s obvious neither the chancellor or Myers are stepping out to defend Leach which makes this more outrageous. They’re bowing down to pretty boy Craig and Adam.

What has leach done to deserve a suspension right before a bowl game:
1) He graduates players
2) Has no history of physical abuse with players
3) Is only the winningest coach at Tech.

Coach Leach is Coming to Town

Just checked my mail. I got a postcard in the mail today. “Coach Leach is coming to town.” It announces the 2010 Recruiting Review Dinner on Thursday, February 4, 2010. How ironic.

This postcard from the www.redraiderclub.com recommends that you save a spot on your calendar to enjoy dinner and cocktails with Coach Leach. Not to worry, then. I would suspect that redraiderclub would appreciate many of you to voice your opinion. The card says that if you have any questions call 806-742-1196 or email kelley.coffman@ttu.edu

by TallMike on Dec 29, 2009 11:03 AM CST up reply actions

And while not taking a concussion or serious injury lightly

To all the fathers out there – who hasn’t had a kid sick who regardless had to be disciplined for bad behavior. Just because he’s sick/injured doesn’t excuse him from consequences if he was behaving badly. As a father or leader or whatever your authoritative role you are put in positions to discern these things all the time. At minimum Leach should have been given the benefit of the doubt by the LEADERS of our school UNTIL the investigation was sorted out and completed. This smacks of petty ego and jealosy from old timers that can’t stomack a popular and eccentric leader they are not.

by Raiderit on Dec 28, 2009 8:14 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Wow what a deal......

I just read the James’ statement and it seems that are concerned about safety issues with concussions. I understand that, but Adam was in a dark room and isolated. What real danger was there in that related to a concussion? Now if Leach had made him practice then it would be real bad, but it appears that this really is a discipline issue. Don’t forget Leach has done similar discipline before…..Britton having to do his Class/homework in a desk on the sidelines during practice and a snow storm! It all seems like a power struggle to me. Can Leach be arrogant and stubbon? Yes but if Myers was the one who wanted him to apologize then I understand why he didn’t. It is time for Myers to go, eventhough I’m a Myers BB supporter! If the James family is concerned about injuries, why is their son playing the most hazardous sport in college ?

by TallMike on Dec 29, 2009 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

Food for thought

What could end up being the death knell is the court of public opinion. Listening to ESPN tonight, they are coming down on the dark side of this (possible firing). ADs and President’s are business people. If this thing steamrolls a bit, they may feel they have no choice but to let him go to save face. Then the lawyers get to work and try and find “cause” so the buyout is null.

For the record…I am NOT anti-Leach. I love what he’s done for the program on the field. I AM anti-Leach antics that continue to paint my university in a bad light. For several years we dealt with his flirtation with other jobs. This year we had the incident with Twitter, then we had his fat girlfriend comments, and now this. It’s his off the field stuff that drives me nuts more than anything.

I hope this all blows over very quietly, but it doesn’t look like it will what with a crawl across the screen every two minutes.

by Tech92 on Dec 28, 2009 8:42 PM CST reply actions

I don’t understand the firing conversation as Leach only does the following:

1) Graduates players
2) has no history of physical abuse
3) all time winningest coach

The ESPN talking heads do not realize what boneheads we have in administration i.e.Gerald Myers. I too are sick of the negativity of my school being a proud alum, but all this coach has done for us is WIN! I do not want to go back to mediocrity and Leach has established some credibility to the program.

I too hope this blows over after the bowl game and everyone gets back to their lives.

BTW, It’s a rather slow news day and this comes the day after the Urban Meyer deal.

by WreckerRaider on Dec 28, 2009 8:47 PM CST up reply actions

Wrecker, you’re right. He has done great with getting players to graduate. As for the physical abuse, none of us know if he has or hasn’t. I’m sure someone will come out of the woodwork and claim something if there’s more. It often happens if there is a history. If none come forward, we can be fairly confident he’s on the up and up.

I lean towards the idea this sort of thing is not isolated, but that he hasn’t physically hurt anyone. Who was the kid he made sit at a desk and study at the 50 yd line in a snow storm? Fairly harmless stuff, but similar.

by Tech92 on Dec 28, 2009 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

my own words

you took the words out off my mouth. love what he has done on the field, hate the off the field stuff. however, if he leaves then WE WILL get a “good ’ol boy”, that may or may not be a big time coach (i.e. art briles). And what will we do with all the Pirate Flags and such?

by TechRed01 on Dec 28, 2009 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Not sure what really...

has happened or what will happen but for now it’s all speculation. In the morning things will be much clearer after all the lawyers and media have their say. For now I would suggest everybody filter information carefully. As we all know Leach looks bad for now mainly because the James family has ESPN on their side. I seriously doubt that things are as bad as they sound at this point and I do believe Mike Leach will be the coach at Texas Tech in the fall. Last season it was about contracts now it’s player related issues. I just want a bowl season without the drama for now. We’ll all know soon enough how this this thing unfolds.
