The Saga of Mike Leach :: Former Players Support the Captain

The saga of Mike Leach was prevalent last year when the contract negotiations were on-going and I thought it was appropriate to revive that meme as there may not be a better way to describe the situation.  This is truly a saga.

Former Players Support Leach

LAJ's Don Williams Adam Zuvanich has a lengthy article this morning about how a handful of former players are supporting head coach Mike Leach.  I found all of the former players' comments insightful, but former offensive lineman Daniel Loper had this to say about WR Adam James:

"I think some people honestly are not tough enough to play college football, and (James) might be one of them, especially if he’s worried about being called out or humiliated," Loper said. "… Sometimes that happens, especially at the collegiate level. It’s not like high school and Pop Warner, where everyone gets to play and gets a pat on the back. Sometimes coaches can be mean and yell."

Former offensive lineman Glenn January also added that the shed isn't that bad at all:

January said the shed in which James spent practice on Dec. 17 might have been the most appropriate place to deal with his concussion, because it kept him out of the sunlight. January said he and his teammates on the offensive line often retreated to the same shed during practices to rest and escape the heat.

"It’s not like it’s some dungeon," he said.

Former players also defended Leach and how he treats injured players, who are still required to practice in some form or fashion while the rest of the team is practicing.  Former wide receiver Eric Morris:

"If you’re injured, you’re required to still participate in some form or fashion. You still have to be outside and doing something," Morris said. "At times people have tried to get away with faking a little nag here and there, and to get away from people doing that, you always need to let everybody know they’re not going to stand around and do nothing. It’s a great thing to have in place. Some people want to get complacent and do different things because things aren’t going their way."

I don't know if Morris is attempting to imply something about Adam, but it sure seems that way.

There's a few things to take away from some of these former players:  1) Loper doesn't come out and simply confirm what some of may think about Adam, but he certainly takes the stance Adam may not be the sort that is cut out to play college football; 2) the darkest place in all of humanity is starting to sound like a place out of the sun light and not a dungeon or some sort of threatening place, but a place where players would convene to get out of the sun; 3) Morris' comments seem to indicate that some players that are injured would rather not practice at all and it sounds as if Adam was trying to get out of practicing as much as possible.

Join me after the jump for additional thoughts on refuting the horrible "dark place", the plan for the Alamo Bowl (yes, the game hasn't been canceled) and around the interwebs.

Star-divide

Refuting the Darkest Place

ESPN's Joe Schad wrote last night that Mike Leach's attorney, Ted Liggett, is refuting the initial story, in that Adam was, "to the darkest place, to clean out the equipment and to make sure that he could not sit or lean. He was confined for three hours."  Liggett refutes a majority of what's been initially reported, essentially adding to the thought that there's two sides to every story:

An attorney for Leach said that while James was secluded twice, the circumstances were not as portrayed in the initial account.

Ted Liggett, Leach's attorney, said James "was placed in an equipment room as it was much cooler and darker" than the practice field "after a doctor had examined him and returned him to the field."

Liggett said that on that day, a trainer was posted outside the room and that James was provided ice. Liggett said that James was secluded for one to two hours. Liggett said that on another occasion, James was placed in a "press room with air-conditioning and a stationary bike he could use."

There's a couple of confusing aspects to this story.  I'm still not sure if Adam was cleared to play, but the first paragraph above seems to indicate that Adam was cleared to be on the field.  That seems to be the opposite of what the initial reaction was in that initially it was thought that Leach was mis-treating Adam because of the concussion and forcing him back too early.  Next, it was originally reported that a guard stood outside the room, but Liggett states that it was a trainer standing outside of the room, probably making sure that Adam didn't take a nap while the rest of the team was practicing.  Finally, it was initially reported that Adam was placed in an electrical closet the second time, but Liggett is stating that there was no electrical closet, but rather a press room with air-conditioning and a stationary bike.

I'm curious if it make a difference to you guys and gals about some of the story that's now being refuted?

There's a Game?

LAJ's Don Williams writes that the coaching staff is moving forward:

Since Leach has served as his own offensive coordinator throughout his 10-year tenure as head coach, someone new will call the plays and signal them in. Interim head coach Ruffin McNeill said inside receivers coach Lincoln Riley will be the primary man responsible for play-calling and offensive staff assistant Sonny Cumbie will do the signaling.

"Lincoln will be calling from the box,’’ McNeill said after the team’s practice Monday evening at Benson Stadium. "He has worked with Mike full-time. And Sonny Cumbie, who works hand in hand with Mike, who understands the offense probably as good as anybody, will be signaling in the plays.’’

I'm comfortable with Riley and Cumbie taking care of the offensive side of the ball.

Around the Interwebs

The general consensus around the interwebs is that this entire situation will not end well for any of the parties involved.  I would encourage you to follow the SB Nation story stream for up-to-the-date information (a story stream is essentially one web-page that is constantly updated rather than having to search all over the place for updates).  It doesn't matter if we're talking about the head Captain, Craig James or Adam James, at the end of the day no one will come away a winner.  SI.com's Stewart Mandel writes that the reputations of Mike Leach and Craig James are at stake.  SB Nation's Spencer Hall writes that Leach has created this current situation.  SAEN's Buck Harvey writes that Leach should see the writing on the wall and coach somewhere else.  AOL Fanshouse's Kevin Blackistone writes that there's no excuse for abusive coaches (I'm probably going on a ledge here, but I'm wondering if putting Adam in an equipment room that the players often sat in to get out of the sun and now we learn that the second place was initially reported as an electrical closet may really be the press room with air conditioning and an exercise bike is considered "abuse").

I'm sure that there will be additional information coming out today, so feel free to post a comment, a FanShot or if you're feeling opinionated, take on a FanPost.  I'm going to be in court for most of the day so I won't be around.

As requested, a picture of the supposed shed in question:

And it was all going so well..

There I am, sitting back and relaxing at the fact that Michigan State are self imploding and we’ll win this bowl game easy, and then something (I really shouldn’t be surprised) comes along and spoils everything. Now in the 5 years that I have followed TTU I have come to accept this kind of thing as part and parcel of being a TTU fan and it now seems like water off a duck’s back!
I agree that this thing has been blown WAAAY out of proportion, and Adam James will not play again for TTU, probably not another College Team and he only has himself to blame. No coach wants a crying princess as a player much less a supposed inside receiver who is meant to be tough on their team, ESPECIALLY with a father who is part of the media and will use his job to complain when the going gets tough.
This will hurt Leach and TTU, but the nature of the media beast is that this will be a small story by the and of January, and no one will care.
I will admit that when I first saw this I was worried, but now having read some former player responses I think we will be ok, although I find it interesting that it’s the more successful players at Tech speaking up, I wonder how the not so successful players are thinking?
I’m sure the truth will out, whether we, as outsiders hear it is another question, but everyone will move on and get past this, for better or worse and the only thing that will change will be that Adam James will move school and Craig James will not commentate on TTU games, so 2 bonuses there.

Here's the thing...

I saw a family be boo’d while they were in the stadium, yet still hold their guns up. I saw a kid get literally humiliated at a football game, and get embarassed on his way to class. Obviously, I’m a friend of Taylor Potts, and I’m not ashamed to say, but you can just see the difference in two players from two different households. I think I have more respect for the Potts’ then the James could buy. I feel as if, if this was ANYONE else’s kid, the university wouldn’t have jumped the gun, but because it was who it was, they had to over-react. I don’t know what country you live in, but in mine your innocent until proven guilty, and if Leach leaves, I would definitely love to have my atheletic fee taken off my tutition.

I like what someone commented earlier

oldschoolraider said this on the box quote posted last night

Sorry to you younger dtn brethren
But this screams 20 something, I grew up getting a trophy for everything. If his last name wasn’t James, the headline would be: Tech’s 12th best receiver in Leach’s doghouse. If you have migraines, are you not suppose to go to a cold, dark place? Is there a correlation to concussions? The fact leach wouldn’t apologize does NOT make me angry…regardless of consequences. You can nor back him into a corner if he believes he’s right.

as a 20 something (23 in Jan… i will accept gifts from any of you!!! :-P) DTNer… i’m not offended and fully agree!!! i really am feeling like drawing up a cartoon for this… check back later today to see if i do lol

@redraidersax

I am glad that you received my comments as they were intended (not good old day syndrome). I am ‘only’ 45, but I feel our society has been changed to where every effing ‘kid’ thinks he’s starring in his own reality show and is entitled to dictate how he is dealt with. I get down when I think about this for my kids and society in general, and then I meet younger Red Raiders like yourself and think that we will be OK despite having a heavy concentration of these wussy/douchebag combo’s. An aside, I also feel like an idiot for thinking this when I see our soldiers in uniform in their 20’s (and younger). We had these types when I was your age, I just can’t help but think that my generation was more interested in being their kids friends more than their parents….so I actually blame the parents who are my age-ish.

Very Intereseted in the cartoon……Wreck ’em

Im Also From the Old School!

Most of the time when we got a trophy or medal we earned it. I can remember in Texas we used to just git one representative out of every UIL district. Even though I don’t like having one representative per district we shouldn’t have 4 out of a 6 team district. This is the mentality of the everyone should get a trophy, age group. I’m sorry to inform you this doesn’t work in the real world. You screw up at work and you suffer the consequences. These kids need to learn this before its to late.

oldschoolraider,

I will do my part to help restore your faith in humanity. I am a 20 something as well (exactly 20, in fact, and turn 21 in may WOOOOOHOOO) and I completely agree with redraidersax’s statements. James is being a total douche and making a fool out of himself. WHen I played high school football, I didn’t dare make sarcastic or snide comments to my head coach simply because he was older than me and I had to respect that. Some of the things kids my age get away with in sports now is simply ridiculous, and sadly, I think it is only going to get worse.

The U.S. Air Force wasn't where I learned to cus

I learned all those words in Football, Basketball, and Baseball practice. When I cussed out a pot head kid in my office as a principal, he said, “You can’t cus at me!” I told him he can’t bring weed into my school, and who’s gonna believe you if you tattle anyway. Coaches can’t even cus at kids anymore, our coach used me as the tackling dummy when demonstrating technique for the forearm shiver. Another chapter of the sissification of our once great culture.

Concussion Discussion

In all seriousness, there seems to be some cllueless folks out there who think that sweet baby james was put into some sort of danger. If mommy and daddy were THAT concerned about his health, maybe they should have pulled the little boy home or told him not to get out of the house. The fact is, Captain Leach did not abuse this little boy, but merely held him out of practice in a darkened secluded spot during practice. Grow up you pansy asses.

The Weird thing is

Even Kansas did not suspend Mangino for a game, as the investigation was going on. Only, after everything was cleared, they suspended him. I am a little concerned about the timing of this. I can’t believe that the administration couldn’t have waited a couple of more days before pulling the suspension trigger. Also, was tech not a little bit premature in suspending Leach? I am not a lawyer, may be there were liabilities involved, but it just seems so weird. There is more going on in the back stage than is visible to us.

Tech Administration handled poorly

With facts starting to come out that this my be a case of a Little League Parent, Tech Adminstration looks really bad for not trying to handle this in a less public forum. As the story gets a little more clearer, I’m not sure at the end of the day that you could say that Leach did anything to James other than make him take off the Ed Harvey sunglasses and ride a stationary bike. Leach may be getting a payday by the way the incident has been handled.

by ttu_porters on Dec 29, 2009 8:41 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

That aspect of this event

is looking bad for the Admin, IMHO. There was no need for TTU to take this public, or to suspend their coach. We can see through all of this the value of the policy in Mike Leach’s program for no comments regarding injuries or discipline issues.

TTU is dumb to take this to the public venue…the James family is even dumber. That they did it makes me think it is part of an effort led by them to discredit ML in public without regard to the impact on any other players, their families or friends, or to TTU. If they feared for their son’s safety, they could have taken him out of any activities in which he might be endangered rather than attempt to make him the concusion poster boy.

Blown way out of proportion

I just get a gut feeling Mike will be coaching on Saturday and our recruits will all think this is a player who used his dad’s media power to compensate for his ill feelings towards the program that doesn’t make him a starter. IMO Craig James should have advised his son differently and not gone public with this story just yet. The fact senior James plans on running for office in Senate may be the attention grabber he’s really shooting for and not so much the fact his son is an average athlete that doesn’t start. I speculate just as much as anybody but this story seems really weak the more I hear about it.

the coverage of the story on ESPN’s First take with the debate on 1st and 10 was much better. GROW THE HELL UP!!!

And I’m not directing that to Adam “I’m gonna tell my Daddy you were mean to me” James. No. I’m directing it at an administration and, especially an Athletic Director, that desired national prominence for decades, and then once LEACH delivered it, has no idea how to technically manage the day-in day out process being on the national stage. This is Amateur with a capital freakin’ ‘A’. If I were Leach, I’d go tell that evil, west-texas, local yokel, cabal headed by Warlock Director Myers to kiss my A$$ (dollar signs wholly intended). They are intent on taking this program backwards. Hey Gerald, speak to a few Aggie alumni about how well they’ve steered that ship the last decade and a half.

The word “conspiracy” has been thrown around a lot. Do you think that ESPN could be behind this, wanting to get a juicy story? Or is Craig James trying to get on the Best Sellers list with his new book?

It feels like ESPN is conducting a smear campaign

ESPN’s coverage of this whole story has been blatantly one-sided.

They continually report is as Leach “locking an injured player in a closet for having a concussion” rather than disclose the full story.

Almost all of the sources they use are “undisclosed.”

On the analytical shows they preface by saying that all of the allegations are under investigation and that no facts are yet known, yet then go on to blast Leach for all the allegations that are under investigation and not yet known.

If other players came out to accuse Leach of mistreatment, (like players did with Mangino), ESPN would plaster it everywhere as breaking news and pound it into the national spotlight. Yet when players came out to defend Leach this morning, they don’t even feel its worth a one sentence mention on their website.

As much as I think Leach does bear some culpability in all this, I am a bit shocked at how the Worldwide Leader has painted the coach. Very little fairness in their reporting. That’s the problem with that network. They don’t report, they editorialize. And they even have an ombudsman who is supposed to reign that in … doesn’t work.

I’m reminded of a play from the OU game. Adam James got pancaked by an OU defender on a screen play. When he got up he started running his mouth and taunting and finally drew a flag. Granted, he’s not the only player to loose his cool in a game, but it does seem to fit in with the mentality he and his dad are now displaying.

Don't read this if you are offended by speculation or conspiracy theories......

I think Baby James and daddy were pissed that he is the 12th best receiver on the team (a walk on from El Paso is getting his playing time) and what program is having a revival of a year this year throwing the ball around? SMU.
If he can raise enough hell, would the NCAA grant him the transfer without waiting a year or losing eligibility so that he can go play for June Jones and the school that paid Daddy so well?
I know this is speculation, but when someone does something that doesn’t look right or smell right….there is usually a motive that isn’t easliy detected.

Just heard Chris Fowler on ESPrumor and he of course is all on James’ side and he continued to put emphasis on the concussion angle. I don’t see how putting Adam in a dark room is putting his “concussion” and his health in danger. If Leach had made him practice that would be harm, it is very obvious the James’ don’t like to be"punished". Again if he was made to practice but to seclude him….sounds very much like a pride battle!!!!!! Wreck’Em Tech

Chris Level was mistaken about Hance's involvement

The decision to suspend Leach was made in consultation with the Tech president, chancellor and Board of Regents members.

Regents chair Larry Anders said he could not comment on the investigation because it is a personnel issue, but the decision was ultimately made by Tech President Guy Bailey and Athletic Director Gerald Myers.

"We’ve been briefed, but ultimately, at the end of the day, it came down to a decision by the president and (athletic director)," Anders said.

I just fail to see how putting a kid in a dark room is bad for a concussion. Bad for morale, maybe, but not bad for a concussion. That’s a failed attempt by whomever in the media to throw Tech and Leach under the bus. Because no matter how you look at this, Tech is officially flying at 31,000 feet without rudders, ailerons or elevators.

"common sense"..

This incident is a microcosm of what is happening nationally….family with connections whines….administration reacts thinking with their a$$ instead of their brains. Reminds be of a quote by Ernest Benn “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy”

Fence Mending

I don’t see how this gets resolved without someone losing their job. It’s not like the Tech Adminstration, Myers, Hance or Leach can go on and pretend this didn’t happen. I think the Adam James event just provided the conduit to try to oust Leach before his his big payday. JMHO

I agree. My problem with that is that the Football program bring in more revenue than any other athletic program at the school. It probably pays for most of the other programs. Yes you have to pay him big bucks now. Welcome to the big time Texas Tech sometimes you have to spend money to make money.

It would be really...

stupid if tech did look at this reason to fire Leach. All the season ticket holders and boosters would hold back contributions for putting tech back in basement. The incoming recruiting class which now stands around #24 would go way outside a top 25 class and kill our chances to succeed against UT and OU. As much as a pain in ass Leach may be for the Admin. folks he is worth it when it comes to generating money for Tech football. Meyers would go down if Leach gets terminated no doubt. The Tech alumni are all in favor of winning and like it. If that means Mike Leach bringing some negative press to Tech so be it as long as we continue to win and recruit like this year. Nobody was ever in danger in this whole story but instead a bunch of talking heads with little information made a knee jerk reaction to spread a sort of yellow journalism.

It could be tragic

to the TTU football program’s growth. Maybe Mike Leach really is not a key component to that, but it sure looks like it from my view.

If he was to be replaced, I do believe there could be a good coach to fill the role. We have seen time and again coaches be replaced and a recruiting class essentially hold together. There is little history of one coming completely apart happening.

One thing that doesn’t seem to have been addressed too much is if adam james said something smartass or with a bad attitude that warranted punishment. he is obviously no angel since he has been in the doghouse before, for whatever reason. also, since he supposedly had a mild concussion, putting him in a dark secluded room was probably the safest punishment possible without making him run or do anything strenuous. i don’t know the kid personally, but if he really is a spoiled brat with a little league father like many are making him out to be, then knocking him down a few pegs was probably long over due.

it would also be interesting to see what other players have to say that have been in the doghouse before like shannon woods, brandon carter, etc., or others that have transferred for one reason or another like chris todd or rashad hawk. Do they all come out and support the captain, or do they still hold bad feelings?

Tech as a university seems to have the universal support of the national media. At least from what I’ve read and heard so far. Seems like everyone with an opinion, outside of Raider Nation, thinks Leach should be hung by the neck until dead. ESPN, Sporting News Radio, Fox Spots, et al, all seem to be coming down squarely on the “something happened and whatever it was is bad and Leach is a heel” line of thinking.

Rich Eisen is covering for Dan Patrick and used words like, “disgusting” “shameful” “stunning” “shocking” “disturbing”. He never used the word alleged. He said things like, “What Mike Leach did is an embarrasment…”

It’s weird how last year the world was on Leach’s side in his contract negotiation, but now you’d think he beat a baby seal with a club on a webcam.

Joe Schad on Sportscenter just said that it looks like Tech is making plans to fire Leach in the next 48 hours. He actually gave Leach’s point-of-view, which was the first time I had heard the national media give it, but he still made it sound like Leach did bad and this is going to end badly.

by ST04 on Dec 29, 2009 1:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Firing "for cause"

Texas is an at-will employment state, but that does not have an affect when there is an employment contract in place. The employment contract now governs when and how Leach can be fired and the liabilities for wrongful termination. I haven’t read the contract, but I can safely assume that any termination must be for cause.

How is a suspension fair?

Someone accused Leach of something.. something that I’m not even sure is against any sort of code of conduct or rules. The player wasn’t injured or put in harm’s way due to his concussion. They said he put someone in a dark room for 3 hours and wouldn’t let him leave, and then put him in a closet for 3 hours and wouldn’t let him leave, unless he didn’t want to be on the team. That’s nice. Is there any proof that this happened or witnesses to corroborate the “dungeon” and “electrical closet” stories?

I guess there must be some other evidence or witnesses, otherwise suspending a coach because an unhappy and disgruntled player and his dad made a simple and even common sense punishment look a lot worse than it was would look pretty stupid. I would be pissed if I got suspended from my job until further notice because someone claimed I had done something wrong without any evidence.

I heard Ruffin McNeil killed Kennedy. Maybe we should suspend him too. Oh wait, I’m not Craig James. Damn!

by Red Raider Juggernaut on Dec 29, 2009 2:04 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Ted Liggett

Outstanding, now Leach’s lawyer is doing work on OTL.

(forgive my typing, but i was doing so while listening to the interview on tv and tried to catch as much as I could.)

Liggestt says he will no longer refer to the building as a “shed” because it is where the O-Line takes breaks and was looking out for AJ’s best interests where it was dark and cool. A ton of ice was provided and a GA was assigned to check on him every 13-15 minutes to make sure he was aware and not napping. He is mentioning that during an injury Leach likes to keep those players close to practice. This equipment garage was near practice, no rats ranning around, but a place for Adam to be kept out of the heat. A certified licensed trainer supervising, and a grad student supervising as well. A medical doctor evaluated him and cleared him to attend pratice, and a statement from this doctor says that he believes Mikes actions helped him, and nothing Mike did harmed James or damaged him in anyway. This comes straight from the doctor to cleared him. He was cleared to be with the team, be close together, to watch the drills, but not to participate in contact. He was not admitted in the hospital for a full concussion, but only a minor concussion.

OTL asked: why do we have one side (leach) saying he was looking out for a young man and the other side (James) feeling they were humiliated and put in danger

Liggett: “I have no idea why this young man is making these accusations, unless he was possibly not happy with the amount of playing time he was getting” “but you as asking me a question that I cannot answer bc i am niether of these two individuals”

OTL: The school might be preparing to fire coach within the next 48 hours, do you have anything you can tell us about that
Liggett: " the university can attempt to do anything it wants. of coarse its my position they cant. We have no idea what we are accused of doing. I have a simple 4 sentence letter that there is an investigation, and until complete he is suspended to coach the bowl game."

Morris, who graduated last year, described the electrical closet inside the stadium as a roomy enough space where the visiting media gathered for interviews after games. Morris said Leach mostly relegated injured players to what the team knew as “Muscle Beach” — an area beside the practice field where those not healthy enough to play did strength and conditioning work.

Nothing real surprisng in the petition

It presents a prima facie case as it must without saying much. The important evidence will be presented during the live hearing via testimony, so Leach’s affidavit is intentionally pretty vague and doesn’t tell us his version of the facts. But I’m glad they filed this to at least get the opportunity to have a judge decide things on a temporary basis.

by jeffinhouston on Dec 29, 2009 4:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That was interesting....and everything in it's present form reported lately reflects very badly on Adam/Craig James

If this is the only thing ’they’ve" got – the more I hear about what transpired up to these events…and Leach’s dealing with them the more Leach was not just within his rights as coach, leader and disciplinarian …but his actions were measured, principled and appropriate given the situation at hand. It appears that James, (Dad) has not been getting the kind of “favors” he felt he or his son should get and shamefully used his position to air it out and the administration blundered in not letting “cool heads” prevail till after the game. The only other reason I can guess about other than the $800k Dec 31st check and a vendetta to fire Leach might be that they, (admin) may have uncovered “other” more serious incidents with “other” players, (the former players favorable comments aside) that have recently come to light in their early investigation and that they have not or perhaps cannot shed light or disclose while they look into them. That would seem to me the only leg for them to stand on. And that they were so serious that allowing Leach to coach another game would be not just irresponsible but negligent. Certainly James case doesn’t rise to this level by itself. I dont see another way the admin can be taking the view of suspending coach Leach. Just saying ….and I’m a huge supporter of Leach.

I just felt where there’s smoke there’s fire – not realizing how vindictive our administration (i.e. Myers), can often be. I’m convinced there is nothing more to this than pissed off dad, a bitter AD, and a coach caught in the cross hairs.

Well, I didn’t see the big deal when I first heard the story based on what was presented. Put a guy in a closet for a few hours for being a douche. OK? It’s Texas, and this is football; James could’ve had to run up and down steps until his intestines started bleeding. I’d think being alone in the dark would be pretty nice as far as “awful things your coach can make you do” go.

After now seeing the other side present its version (and, wonder of wonders, documented evidence), this is a total farce. I look forward to a chorus of apologies and lots of dudes in suits at Tech with egg on their face. And if my dreams come true Craig James will be put in an electrical closet for a few hours.

I hope Craig James goes forward with his wanting to enter politics

Such a decision by Craig James – who has no qualification for any political or leadership position – will revitalize my long-lost interest in politics and I will personally ensure he regrets opening himself up to all the scrutiny he deserves.

Craig James

CJ was just ESPN and says “all of the stories ESPN has put out there has been accurate”

Of coarse he says this, because he is the meat head feeding them this bull. I mean does anyone think its odd that where he was being interviewed was the same place that joe schad was giving all his “unnamed source” info.

I hope the whole country finds out this guy is a fraud. He would fit in well with all those other political crooks

I think Leach has orchestrated this whole fiasco because he wants his presence to be a “game time decision” and throw off Michigan State’s game plan.

or probably not.

by pcrawttu on Dec 29, 2009 6:18 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

this is bullshit

the slant that the media has agaisnt leach is ridiculous!!! Chris Fowler was on the cowherd show today questioning leach’s integrity and saying that “he must be clueless if he doesnt understand how serious a concussion is.” really? am i hearing this right? he was practicaly doing this kid a favor by putting his ass in that shed. And someone said on 104.3 that the teammates support james. how do you support a guy that throws your head coach under a bus? I hate to say it because i hope it doesnt happen, but leach is gonna get fired over some bullshit and a ugly court battle will ensue. Better get chris petersen on the phone. I will still support our red raiders on the field, but administration and A.D. sorely test the fans patience.

Actually I think everyone who is not an ESPN analyst is seeing the light that this was just a dad using his power to push a university and a coach around. If you go online to any forums talking about this about 95% have Leach’s side.

Peterson would be a good coach I would just rather have Leach.

by ST04 on Dec 29, 2009 6:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

agree

best case scenario: leach stays and were all happy

worst case scenario: leach gets canned, and we hire a offensive minded coach.

Was it Ever Confirmed that the James would have Accepted an Apology from Leach?

I’m sure it has been said: but can the family say that this was unhealthy for AJ if they are willing to accept an apology? It has nothing to do with medical necessities or a player being in danger. This is all ego.

ESPN'sensation

ESPN’s Mark May has always been a Tech basher, as last year he would never give us our due. He now talks like he is broadcasting from Sixth Street while eating Earl Campbell sausage with Matthew Maconahay. He is a certifiable goofball. Whatever you think of Lou Holtz, he at least throws in some balance to the argument.

by Texas1836 on Dec 29, 2009 7:05 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

looks bad for university

I DO NOT LIKE MARK MAY NOR MR HOLTZ, however, i think the conversation they just had kinda put the blame of all this on the University, as they have been the first on that network to question the timing and actions by TECH!

by TechRed01 on Dec 29, 2009 7:13 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

So Holtz just realized the Three Stooges are running Texas Tech University

I ‘ve known that since they all botched the contract negotiations last spring & then allowed Gerald Meyers to remain as AD. Those two new north end zone sections will forever be known as Gerald’s Folly if they fire Leach this week (And the latest headline on ESPN says ‘Leach expects to be fired soon’). Those new sections were 1/2 empty at the Oklahoma game. They’ll be full of tumbleweeds if Leach leaves.

Go Lou

That may be the first thing Lou Holtz has said that I agree with. haha. At least he tried to reel May back to reality a little bit.

Yea. Some of his earlier comments sounded like they came from the gut of a coach accustomed to dealing with bed-wetting cry babies.

Time for Admin change at Tech: Another embarrassment for Tech fans & Alum

The handlingof this complaint by the James family against Coach Leach by the TTU admin is woefully inadequate and lack of descretion. The suspension evokes a concerted effort at public humiliation of Mike Leach and the university as a whole.
I am preparing a formal inquest to the state of Texas to investigate the details of these continuing ridiculous decisions by the TTU administration.
As far as the validity of the complaint by the James’, it will all come out and they will be rewarded accordingly. I hope Craig James has another career lined up once he is no longer used by ESPN.

So, over on raiderpower.com, a few posters are adding comments from the various players Facebook or Twitter pages that SEEM to point to their support of Adam James. I am confounded by this whole thing. I can’t wait to see what comes out in the wash.

In one of two e-mails written by current Tech inside wide receivers coach Lincoln Riley, including one to athletic director Gerald Myers, obtained Tuesday by Schad and ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach, Riley referred to James as “unusually lazy and entitled” and said he has been worried about James’ effect on the rest of the …receivers because of “his weak and conceited attitude.”In a separate e-mail, Riley said he and Leach disciplined James for poor effort from earlier drills two practices before James claimed his concussion, writing, “This has been a common theme about Adam’s work ethic and attitude during his entire career.”

And...

Edward Britton being on Adam’s side doesn’t mean much since he has a bit of history himself.

Craig and Joe in Front of an Army Blanket

Just saw a couple of reports with ESPN’s inside report from their insider Craig"I’m a parent" James. It looked not to be filmed in a studio, but possibly remote, maybe at his residence, because the backdrop is a wrinkled blanket. It looks as though he reporting from the inner sanctum of his bedroom blanket fort. Oddly ESPN’s Joe “from an unnamed source” Schad made his report from the same fort. Sensational.

The blanket fort

reminded me of Howie from the movie The Benchwarmers…which ironically seems to fit this situation well.
