Why this from Level?

“Under no circumstances will Mike coach in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday. I can assure you of that.”

by TracySaulRulz on Dec 30, 2009 10:57 AM CST reply actions

Because the Judge cannot possible have enough of the full story to reverse.

by TallMike on Dec 30, 2009 10:58 AM CST up reply actions

The judge will rule today. These things, as I understand it, are usually fairly cut and dry. All Leach needs to show is that due process wasn’t provided to him.

by Tech92 on Dec 30, 2009 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

I thought he was playing to the idea that a Leach win today means he’s fired tonight.

by Quatroux on Dec 30, 2009 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

because level says if leach ends up winning, tech will fire him

Level is making sense regarding what people like Kent Hance might know that supports the suspension…things beyond Adam James.

But that is speculation on their part and simply reflects faith in the leadership.

by TallMike on Dec 30, 2009 10:58 AM CST reply actions

Overall, starting to sound like "the folder"

You know, the one for the employee that someone wants to get rid of but really don’t have anything big on them. So they take every little snippet of hoped wrongdoing and make this bulging folder of nothing that they hand over to HR and then HR feels the need to take action because there is SO much evidence.

by TracySaulRulz on Dec 30, 2009 11:02 AM CST reply actions

I've tried that before

and It didn’t work… at first.

by Quatroux on Dec 30, 2009 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

Anyone in the court room?

I’m guessing the judge will make everyone turn off any phones or such devices, but would be good to know.

by imisswesttexas on Dec 30, 2009 11:03 AM CST reply actions

does anyone see anything good coming from this?

i"ve racked my brain and find nothing, zip , zero, no silver lining… Its like a huge dump. some one has to clean it.

Nothing, nada, zilch. Can’t freaking believe we’re at this point. Tech Admin looks f-ing rediculous. Coach Leach looks like an uncaring, uneducated bully. The Jameses look like a family of jackasses (no arguement here on that point). Nothing good at all.

by imisswesttexas on Dec 30, 2009 11:05 AM CST up reply actions

What will be the crowd @ the first game of the 2010 season?

Unless they hire someone really big name there will be no more than 20,000 fans!!!!!!
Free Leach….Wreck’Em Tech

by techgolf44 on Dec 30, 2009 11:05 AM CST reply actions

I’m willing to wait until the bombshell, that surely HAS to be behind curtain number 2, is dropped. Our administration can’t be this stupid. They just can’t be…can they?

by Tech92 on Dec 30, 2009 11:06 AM CST reply actions

I'm with you here.

Kinda hoping there is more to the story. If they simply try to lay out a crap load of little things (ala “fat little girlfriends”) then I just might blow my top.
However, you have to believe there is a door #2 waiting to be opened with more info. I sure as hell hope it isn’t some sort of statement or interview from Taylor Potts after his concussion. Probably grasping at straws here, but James did talk about having Taylor out to their ranch on a hunting trip. Makes you think James and Potts are somewhat friendly. Again, grasping…

by imisswesttexas on Dec 30, 2009 11:09 AM CST up reply actions

No big name coming here......

We needed Leach to build it another 5 years or so, but now the school looks bad also.

by oldschoolraider on Dec 30, 2009 11:06 AM CST reply actions

The definition of a conundrum

I don’t want our school admin to look like fools, so I hope they have more than we know……I want Leach to stay so I don’t want there to be more.

Agreed we will be no better than .500 for years..

I was a freshman when Steve Sloan left he built a top five program in 3 years and it took us 10 years just to get a winning record….I also think TTech will have no money to hire a decent coach…our coach will be from Eastern Maine!!!!! Free Leach! Wreck’Em Tech

by techgolf44 on Dec 30, 2009 11:09 AM CST reply actions

No disrepect intended

but if we hire the Lubbock High coach we won’t have moving expenses.

Minds well go to the dying hole...
Leach loses hearing = no coaching

Level said that he thinks Leach won’t resign, I tend to think that he moves on. Let’s start preparing ourselves for reality.

by LBKpiratefan on Dec 30, 2009 11:11 AM CST reply actions

Leach is too stubborn

He won’t resign. If he isn’t fired before tomorrow he gets 800k… and regardless of when he gets fired he gets 400k for each remaining year = 1.6M as long as it is before next season. I wouldn’t resign either… I’d make them fire me if I were in his position.

by jdeeTTU on Dec 30, 2009 11:21 AM CST up reply actions

holy crap, 51 comments so far

that escalated quickly. one thing is for sure, none of us are getting much work done today. need them to hurry and finish this up so i can focus.

Please hurry this up

I have a low tolerance for sports talk radio

by Quatroux on Dec 30, 2009 11:18 AM CST reply actions

Is it money or ego?

Is it Myers’ ego or is Tech really broke that they can’t pay Leach the $800K after the Alamo Bowl, so they are coming up with excuses? I getting worried now

by jef on Dec 30, 2009 11:19 AM CST reply actions

I have strep throat

I can’t beleive that Leach is doing this to me. The stress is killing me. I’m calling my dad.

by Quatroux on Dec 30, 2009 11:21 AM CST reply actions

true

but I’d have a better case since I already suffered through that basketball game last night. That’s somehow Leach’s fault as well.

by Quatroux on Dec 30, 2009 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

Tech92 sure is quiet…gathering inside information I suspect…

I gotta tell you…I love Lubbock and the people. But the callers to this radio show are bad…really, really bad. They sound like they didn’t just fall off the turnip truck, but this morning’s turnip truck!

by Tech92 on Dec 30, 2009 11:21 AM CST reply actions

Problem...

If they fire Leach they will owe him @ least 2M! An there goes the budget for the next poor sole who might come to Lubbock! Free Leach! Wreck’Em Tech

by techgolf44 on Dec 30, 2009 11:23 AM CST reply actions

They can hire me for $100K

But I’ll need an addtl $2.9M to bring in my offensive consultant, Mike Leach. Sound good? Can start tomorrow.

by imisswesttexas on Dec 30, 2009 11:25 AM CST reply actions

That's the problem.....

This isn’t right and I know the “money people” won’t pay for a good coach! This is going to be aweful!!!! Free Leach! Wreck’Em Tech

by techgolf44 on Dec 30, 2009 11:26 AM CST reply actions

Who else leaves.....

If Leach goes, I don’t see Myers surviving this either.

by ttu_porters on Dec 30, 2009 11:29 AM CST reply actions

Chris Level reports..

It’s unlikely the judge will issue a ruling at the conclusion of the hearing Will likely tell everyone that he’ll issue his decision later.
This way everyone will leave the room and avoid the reaction. He’ll prepare a written order and file it before its made aware to the public.

by TracySaulRulz on Dec 30, 2009 11:29 AM CST reply actions

Hah…radio comparing this to the JFK shooting. That’s a bit much.

by davereid on Dec 30, 2009 11:30 AM CST reply actions

I might be a bigger fan of Leach and PK than the school they coach for. I’m okay with that. I have no regrets with how I’ve supported the school, but I might have some regrets about how much money I’ve given the school over the last 13 or so years.

anyone know when and where the red raiders are practicing?

i think it is trinity university, but does anyone now practice times.

by mxmvxx on Dec 30, 2009 11:34 AM CST reply actions

Why?? Seems like all the evidence was there for a rational person to not put him on the team.

by davereid on Dec 30, 2009 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

I would think winning lots of games would do a better job than that.

by davereid on Dec 30, 2009 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

i think

leach knew that having him on the team would bring more exposure… too bad it back fired.

by mxmvxx on Dec 30, 2009 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

Just embarrassing

So it looks more likely that Leach is gone. Who could be the next coach? I have always said Art Briles would be a perfect fit.

by adam24 on Dec 30, 2009 11:36 AM CST reply actions

It will be Art Briles

Coincidence that Art and his wife stayed multiple days at a Lubbock Hotel earlier this week?

by TRT844 on Dec 30, 2009 11:38 AM CST up reply actions

That’s the first time I heard that story about Briles……you know an insider? If he comes, maybe I won’t throw away all my tech gear.

by WreckerRaider on Dec 30, 2009 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

Head bartender is a great friend of mine, spoke with them during their stay. He thought they were there for a recruiting trip, which may be true…just seems the timing is off.

by TRT844 on Dec 30, 2009 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

It would be ironic if Tech is interviewing coaches before his contract is up after last winter with Leach and Washington.

by adam24 on Dec 30, 2009 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

Someone get some bartenders to Leach and the Tech admins so we can find out what’s going on STAT!

by davereid on Dec 30, 2009 11:45 AM CST up reply actions

A little bird...

Briles has a lot of family ties in Lubbock… Christmas Vacation.

by baker822 on Dec 30, 2009 11:50 AM CST up reply actions

I think we all know that Briles has Lubbock ties….but does he leave the money Baylor is giving him to walk into this mess. Though he is another good ol’boy, he should fit right in. He’s just another version of Spike but will run the spread offense.

by WreckerRaider on Dec 30, 2009 11:52 AM CST up reply actions

That being said, strictly my conspiracy theory.

If it comes down to it, I’d like to see us go After Gary Patterson (TCU), Chris Peterson (Boise St.), or even bring back Dana Holgerson. I’d also be okay with promoting from within – Lincoln Riley

by TRT844 on Dec 30, 2009 11:52 AM CST up reply actions

Patterson—already signed an extension.
Peterson- Signed his extension.
Holgerson – No HC coaching experience worries me. Might as well plug Sonny in as HC. Don’t know Lincoln enough.

What about Sonny Dykes??

by WreckerRaider on Dec 30, 2009 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

What about Sonnie Cumbie?

by baker822 on Dec 30, 2009 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

Wow ...

There is a recruiting dead period right now. It started Dec. 21st and will end Jan. 4th. Coaches can only contact a player only once a week and only by phone. Coaches can’t visit recruits and recruits can’t visit campus.

by Arizona Raider on Dec 30, 2009 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

firmly support coach Leach staying

but if i had to throw in my two cents, I say get Kevin Sumlin from U of H given his experience with a similar offense and the current talent on our team.

by imisswesttexas on Dec 30, 2009 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

Dunno if I'd leave if I was UH's coach

Getting better with low expectations and you only need to beat 2 big 12 teams to get into the top 15. Or you can deal with a completely crazy administration here in Lubbock and everyone with expectations that you’re going to win a Big 12 championship in the next 5 years.

by merrik on Dec 30, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

Sumlin was offered the KU job, but declined. I do like him though….another coach to prevent me from throwing away my Tech gear. Maybe I should mail them to Gerald.

by WreckerRaider on Dec 30, 2009 11:50 AM CST up reply actions

Sumlin wasn’t offered the KU job

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything but they make you smile when pushed down the stairs.

by Owen on Dec 30, 2009 11:57 AM CST up reply actions

This is ridiculous..

They need to have some kind of severe infraction to fire him. And evidence of said infraction. Why would you fire a winning football coach that’s taking you where you want to go?

If he gets canned with no evidence of wrongdoing, I’m probably going to do something crazy.

by merrik on Dec 30, 2009 11:37 AM CST reply actions

I thought this was a public hearing….wouldn’t they have already made an announcement??

by WreckerRaider on Dec 30, 2009 11:53 AM CST up reply actions

The judge doesn't have to rule "on the spot"

He could but he more likely will sign a written order this afternoon and fax it to the attorneys.

ESPN
LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech has fired football coach Mike Leach.

The school handed a termination letter to Leach’s attorney, Ted Liggett, on Wednesday just before the two sides were to appear in a Lubbock, Texas, courtroom for a hearing on the coach’s suspension.

Liggett says the letter says Leach is “terminated with cause effective immediately.”

Leach was suspended by the university on Monday while the school investigated allegations that he mistreated an injured player.

Receiver Adam James alleges Leach twice confined him to small, dark spaces during practice after the player was diagnosed with a concussion.

Texas Tech plays Michigan State on Saturday in the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.

This is coming from the lawyer who had to change his clothes because he wasn’t dressed for an open court hearing. We’re hearing only one side again.

by davereid on Dec 30, 2009 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

It is not unusual in West Texas for attorneys to show up to such events casually dressed. He didn’t know it was going to be an open hearing until he got there because it wsn’t going to be one. Plus – this attorney is recovering from surgery. His dress was not an issue for the judge.
