BREAKING: Mike Leach Fired from Texas Tech

Both Pete Christy and Chris Level are reporting via Twitter that Mike Leach has been fired from Texas Tech.  I really don't know what to say, I'm in complete and utter shock.  I have more on this tonight.

I feel like we need way more information about what’s going on. I refuse to believe this was just because Adam James or Mike fighting to be able to coach the bowl game.

by davereid on Dec 30, 2009 12:02 PM CST reply actions

I will be at

the Alamo Bowl. I hope they show meyers so we can boo him. But unless they release something big that we don’t know about, my support for TTU has ended until the current Admin is gone.

by RRDEW on Dec 30, 2009 12:03 PM CST reply actions

I agree

Unless there is something else that ttu gets out in the open immediately, I have lost any support for the admins and AD.

worth cutting some salary, if that’s what they are really doing? I have yet to renew my donation to the Alumni Association for the year and will refrain from doing so until some serious evidence comes out.

My letter to Hance

It is being reported that Mike Leach has been fired. If true, I will still be at the Alamo Bowl to support the team, but unless something BIG comes out that is not currently public, my support for Texas Tech has ended in every way (Red Raider Club, Alumni Association, attendance at events, special fund raising campaigns……) as long as Meyers and Bailey are still employed by the university.

I am sickened by the way this has been handled and the way it has turned out, and I am extremely disappointed in the way it has been handled by you and the entire administration at Texas Tech.

It is embarrassing...

Unfortunately, it’s a common theme for Tech. I’m still angry about the accreditation debacle. Though still sans specifics, I’m sure many alumni will call for a systemic purging of the university.

Will we bring in Sonny Dykes? Would one of the ex-NFL coaches have any interest? Oh yea, I forgot. They would have to work with Gerald Myers.

Heh, Leach’s attorney wasn’t even dressed properly for an open hearing. So professional.

by davereid on Dec 30, 2009 12:16 PM CST reply actions

He could have been wearing a evening dress and beanie with a spinning propeller, and it wouldn’t have changed the results.

by ForestFlyer on Dec 30, 2009 12:19 PM CST up reply actions

Ligget says Tech knew they were about to be exposed in the public hearing so they shut it down by firing Leach.

by TT4EVER on Dec 30, 2009 12:17 PM CST reply actions

What the hell is going on up there???

They had better get out in front of this and I mean quickly! This just sucks. Mark down this date as a day that our program took a huge step backward.

by imisswesttexas on Dec 30, 2009 12:20 PM CST reply actions

is it true that they are trying to reach a settlement for Leach to coach again? we all know Leach hates the Admin, but loves the school, could it happen?

by ttutyler on Dec 30, 2009 12:20 PM CST reply actions

Absolutely Un-Fu$%ing Believeable

Yeah I’m a Tech fan, but Tech is dead to me right now. Leach turned our program around and didn’t get treated fairly last year w/ the BS Myers gave him w/ the extension signing ultimatum. While that little saga was unbelieveable, I have no words to describe this freakin saga over the last couple days….

There better be one hell of a march/revolution on campus over this! Hopefully there’s more to the story than Myers on a power trip and Adam’s pansy dad taking after his little princess…. UGGGGGHHHHH

I have no Choice but to Boycott

One of my good friends, his girlfriend, my wife, and myself were all going to make the trip to SA this weekend to watch the game, and then drive home the same night. But as a result of Myers’ stupidity, we’re now boycotting. I had planned to buy season tickets next year (could not afford to do so this year), and travel to all of the home games from DFW where I currently live, but no more. Thanks Myers, I hope you’re fired as you have just done irreparable damage to the Texas Tech Football program, Texas Tech’s flagship athletic program. The same program that inspired the numerous Tech Alumni from across the states to put Double T Medallions on their car, post flags outside their houses, and show their colors at work. The effects of this will be felt for years to come.

by ttakacs on Dec 30, 2009 12:22 PM CST reply actions

If you already have tickets, don’t not go. You should still go to support your team, just not your university.

I think you can probably find em cheap now.

by kayakyakr on Dec 30, 2009 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

No need.

All have lost faith. Will we still win the game, yes, I believe so. Will that change the way we feel, no, it won’t. Our ire with Myers began around the contract negotiation time, this just solidified and completed our disdain for him.

by ttakacs on Dec 30, 2009 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

GO TO ALAMO BOWL , PLLLEEESE

It is the best thing right now for the players. . . they worked hard all year for this while Adam James was loafing. If he went home everyone would feel better I am sure , because everytime they look at him how can they think ENTHUSIASM, TEAMWORK, HONOR!
Also the tortillas are making a comeback with his name. This time he really may want to find a tight closet! More dumb advice his parents gave him==stay and play in the game AAAARRRGGG.

Be contributing to the Texas Tech Alumni Association from this point forward, or until Gerald Myers resigns as AD. by blackbeard on Dec 30, 2009 12:35 PM CST reply actions

James isn't to blame

The administration or whoever made this decision was just looking for an out to fire the guy. You guys can blame the James clan all you want, but Tech was looking for a reason to fire Leach.

There was a firefight!!!!

by ThePhenomenon on Dec 30, 2009 12:36 PM CST reply actions

And they gave it to him

You really think this happens if Craig James doesn’t dish this out on ESPN. Give me a freaking break. They are EXACTLY who I blame along with the Administration.

by imisswesttexas on Dec 30, 2009 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

It would happened eventually

Ever since last year, it was inevitable in my opinion. If not for the James situation, they could have fired him like the Boston College’s Jeff agodzinski for interviewing somewhere else or looking at another job. They would have found something.

There was a firefight!!!!

Defensive Revolution

For all us young Alumni (2000 and up) this is a hard pill to swallow. Since we’re the breadwinners that are supposed to donate for the next 40 years, we need to let the feelings about Meyers and other Admins be known or we’re doomed to the mediocrity they prefer. We’ve been talking about the defensive revolution on here and it looks like it’s gonna need to start earlier than planned. I’m as mad as the next Raider right now, but I think if we can retain Ruffin and get a capable HC quickly we could at least keep some defensive recruits. This seems like an equally ambiguous screw up from Meyers, Leach, and the James idiots so why not cut ties from all three parties?
Im down to be a Florida State fan how bout yall?

For years I have tried to defend Lubbock and Texas Tech that we are a modern school with new age thinking, but today this just shows that the city of Lubbock and the Tech administrators are a bunch of one-dimensional thinkers ran by good ol’ boys and farmers. So they can’t handle an outside the box coach, so what do they do…..find some BS way to fire him and now they can bring back in another good ol’ boy.

THank you Tech for running off this fan of 25 years!

I really hate..

that I keep hearing Sonny Dyke’s name. Nothing against Sonny, but the mere mention of his name suggest that this entire debacle was engineered by some “Old Guard” faction within the university. Leach brought a fresh face to Texas Tech. He promoted the school. Texas Tech was no longer only a state school nestled among the cotton fields of remote Lubbock. I don’t mean to overstate the case, but Leach did change the public’s impression of the university, and the region. He changed things. I hate to think that all of this is a result of the action of some rigid-minded “Old Guard” that resented that change.

First of all, this entire situation sucks. I have always been a Leach supported and think the school mishandled this badly (unless new information is disclosed).

We’ve got to move forward now and I think Briles should be our guy. Fiirst and most importantly, look at what he did at UH and Baylor. Next, he is one of us and is likely not to see the job as a steppoing stone to something else.

Whatever happens, it will be weird not seeing the Captain on the sidelines.

by Tech92 on Dec 30, 2009 1:29 PM CST reply actions

Snippet

Several former and current Texas Tech players and coaches defended Leach and harshly criticized James’ work ethic in e-mails obtained by CBSSports.com.

Among those were former Texas Tech wide receiver Eric Morris, who wrote that James was “never known as a hard worker” and “seemed to have a negative attitude toward the football program the majority of the time.”

Morris told The Associated Press on Wednesday the letters were written as school administrators began looking into the incident, before Leach was suspended. Morris said they wanted to show their support for Leach and show James’ possible motives.

Morris said he spoke with Leach as the incident began unfolding.

“He told me he would never do anything” to harm a player, Morris said. “He was trying to hold someone accountable.”

This is very unfortunate

Even though I am a hardcore Sooner fan (and really didn’t appreciate that horrible beating you gave us a few weeks back), I am shocked and appalled by this. Most of us have heard nothing substantive about the circumstances around this situation…I didn’t even know the whole “shed” thing until I was going through some of the articles on here about this deal.

Mike Leach is a great coach and deserved a lot better. What’s more, he really seemed like he wanted to stick around at TTU, something your admin folks might want to remember down the line. It was great to see what he had done for your program. I really feel for you guys. I hope you get another good coach who you can appreciate and enjoy as much as Leach, who can continue to make your team competitive. I can't help but think of the similarity

this has to Coach Knight’s firing at Indiana. Beloved by the fans, hated by the administration for untraditional methods. Fired without just cause creating an enormous backlash from the fanbase.

How ironic is it then that Meyers was the one to give Knight a second chance but then chase Leach off in an almost identical way….

10 years in the making

They finally did it. Had Leach followed around town early on. Tried to run him out during contract negotiations. But they finally got their thrown chair courtesy of Craig James.

It took 10 years for all those letters Art Briles wrote to the Regents and Admin on how Leach wasn’t fit to be the head coach of Texas Tech to come home to roost, but here we are.

Lesson learned. Don’t piss off Hance’s wife at a cocktail party.

Tech92 posted above.

This is clearly some time in the making. No way in hell coach Leach would sign that and I don’t blame him!

“In addition to being unacceptable, if proven, these allegations constitute a breach of your employment contract.”

Also, the fact that item 1 was striked out with Bailey’s initials indicate that coach Leach wasn’t about to allow Myers to oversee practices or team functions.

This continues to look like Myers and Bailey working an agenda and looking for a way to fire coach Leach.

Everyone reading this thread should send an email to Chancellor@ttu.edu to voice thier opinion..

Here is mine….

I am an Architecture graduate of 86’ and was about to join the alumni association and send a sizable check to support our football program as a tribute to Mike Leach and his success. I have spent 15 years building a successful business and felt is was time to share…I have never sent money to Tech, though I have often thought about it. As long as Gerald Myers and the current administration is in place, I will never send a dime to support a university that now has me embarrassed to tell anyone that Tech was my college(I will remove my flag from my 1922 historic house in Tampa Florida as soon as I get home!!!).

I am embarrassed to have graduated from a school that has behaved so badly in both the contract negotiations and the way it has fired coach Leach….your actions have set the reputation of this university back many years. The worst part of this is that most of us are embarrassed to say we choose to attended and graduated from Tech.

Please read all the comments on the blog "double T nation" and you will realize that we will never forgive you for your lack of class in this situation. Below is just one of many comments you will find, but I believe it captures a lot of our feelings….

Thank you Tech for running off this fan of 25 years!

by EDCNP on Dec 30, 2009 3:26 PM CST reply actions

mine included this tid bit

At one point my letter asked Hance to admit that TTU has “been a participant in a giant scheme to contaminate or cut off our cities’ water supply.” They don’t deserve the effort it would take to draft a meaningful letter that might not even make it past the junkmail filter.

by Quatroux on Dec 30, 2009 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

Read the TTU Response

In the response to the papers filed by Leach the TTU response is now available out there on the internet. The first twelve pages or so are Legal mumbo jumbo but page 12 or 13 Exhibit A is the letter presented to Leach on Sunday that he refused to sign. There was no admission of guilt or suspension only that we were conducting an investigation and to treat players fairly and that injured players should be released in writing. There are more details but those are the general guidelines. Go find the letter it will change the way you feel about the story.

Despite the facts or the allgations by the James family, Leach’s refusal to be an employee to his employer not Gerald Myers not a pissin contest but the President representing the university was his downfall. The pirate after all not wanting to submit to anyones wishes or trying to over protect his money or his legal contract caused the firing. He tried to turn the tables and run things on his terms against the best wishes of the University. They didnt want to take control of his team or accuse him of anything they only wanted him to sign a letter that re enforced the terms of his contract that he was follwing all procedures and guideliens

I enjoyed the man, and as an alum that graduated only weeks after the last game coached by Spike have enjoyed every single game but I think after he turned the tables during the contract negotiations he got a bit too big for his own good.

by Gus Mitchem on Dec 30, 2009 3:26 PM CST reply actions

I strongly believe that he revolutionized college football and was / will never be given credit for doing so. I am the biggest fan but the men that run the university are highly educated men and are not going to act against our own best interest. The administration just has to take the higher road because they are an ongoing concern.

by Gus Mitchem on Dec 30, 2009 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

Im a Longhorn fan and even I can tell you that that letter was absolute garbage and if my employer had asked me to sign something similar I would have flatly refused and immediately called my attorney.

by 6th street on Dec 30, 2009 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

From what i read, it appreared that if he had signed the letter, then the university would be in the middle of an investigation and we would still have a head coach and he would be in SA preparing for a bowl game.

by ttuagr on Dec 30, 2009 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

I read the letter

What about this tidbit in the letter:

"In addition to being unacceptable, if proven, these allegations constitute a breach of your employment contract."

I would never sign something like that. It basically states that if he sent Adam James to a dark room, he is in breach of his contract. They were building a case against him and that is plainly obvious.

by imisswesttexas on Dec 30, 2009 4:31 PM CST up reply actions

He deserved it

Any idiot who sues their employer five days before they are due $800,000 knows they are going to get fired. Does Leach thinks he runs the university? How pitiful is that – if anyone sued their boss, whether right or wrong, they’d be fired. What did he expect?

And James? All he had to do was revoke the kid’s scholarship instead of locking him in a room (twice). What is wrong with you people?

What a dummy. He deserved to be fired.

Want more? Read at http://www.enlightenedspartan.com.

Beyond the story, good luck on Saturday – we Spartans could use all the help we could get and certainly weren’t expecting this. Should make for a crazy atmosphere to the game. I just hope we can keep up.

Will Art Briles be Next Coach at Texas Tech?
Posted: Dec 30, 2009 2:56 PM CST

by Brandon Davidow

WACO – With the firing of Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach this morning, will the Red Raiders now turn to Baylor Head Coach Art Briles?

A source very knowledgeable with Baylor and Texas Tech athletics has told News Channel 25 Sports that Art Briles is the leading candidate for the vacant position.

An official at Baylor athletics told News Channel 25 Sports that the University does not comment on other schools and their personnel changes. Baylor also said they have no information regarding the matter.

Briles received a bachelors degree from Texas Tech in 1979 and came back to the Red Raiders to coach the running backs from 2000-2002. He was hired as the head coach at the University of Houston in 2003. Briles just completed his second season with the Bears football program.

by Tech92 on Dec 30, 2009 3:31 PM CST reply actions

My wish list:

1) Sumlin (he has to bring Dana with him though) – though I doubt our farmer good ol boys will want an African American as a HC. I hate to use the race card here, but that’s the reality of Lubbock and college football.

2) Briles – I do like his fire and if he could keep this recruiting class together.

3) I would like to see an upcoming coordinator like Venables, Jeremy Bates (USC), get a look.

by WreckerRaider on Dec 30, 2009 3:43 PM CST up reply actions

My fear is that

we won’t even be able to be considered by guys like Venables after this fiasco. Why would he leave a proven program for a program where the administration shows no support to its coach…or conversely, fires its coach after unprecedented success?

Texas Tech is my second favorite team. They became that because of Mike Leach. I think what Tech has done to him is one of the worst injustices I’ve seen in college football. I wish him the best. I hope he lands somewhere good, soon. I still hope Texas Tech beats Michigan State in the bowl game and that is for the players Mike Leach coached. They deserve to win. Unfortunately, I don’t know if I can continue to support a school that treats one of their best the way they have.

From ESPN's Tim Griffin:

Texas Tech officials plan to move quickly to fill the position vacated when Mike Leach was fired. Under Texas state law, the opening will need to be posted for at least 10 days, meaning it is still several days from being filled.

Chancellor Kent Hance plans to take an active role in the hiring. Here’s a look at some of the most prominent names you’ll be hearing about in the next several days:

Baylor coach Art Briles: He played at Houston, but graduated from Texas Tech and coached there three seasons as Leach’s original running backs coach before starting his head coaching career at Houston in 2003. His offensive ideas mesh well with what the Red Raiders’ current philosophy. He also has the added benefit of being well-known and popular among high school coaches after winning four state championships at Stephenville High School.
Texas Tech defensive coordinator/interim head coach Ruffin McNeill: Arguably the most popular sports figure in Lubbock — even bigger than Leach. His transformation of the Tech defense has been the team’s underrated strength over the past two seasons. He’s also beloved by players and respected by other members of the school’s administration. His hiring would be the easiest transition in the program, especially in maintaining recruiting continuity.
Former Auburn/Mississippi coach Tommy Tuberville: Tuberville was out of coaching this season after he resigned at Auburn after last season. Insiders say he’s itching to get back into college football and would be interested in the Tech job. He’s familiar with Texas recruiting after coaching at Texas A&M in 1994.
Southern Mississippi coach Larry Fedora: Born in College Station, Fedora has the background to be interested in coming to Tech. He was head coach at Garland High School for four seasons before serving as an assistant for six seasons at Baylor and three seasons at Oklahoma State before taking the Golden Eagles’ head coaching job in 2008. He’s led them to back-to-back trips to the New Orleans Bowl in his first two seasons there.
Arizona offensive coordinator Sonny Dykes: A former baseball player at Tech, Dykes would appeal to many locals because his father is Spike Dykes, who coached there immediately before Leach. Sonny Dykes was on Leach’s staff for seven seasons before he left to join Mike Stoops’ staff at Arizona in 2007.

Sideline will tell the story

My season tickets are intentionally right behind the home team bench in The Jones. The view of field is undoubtedly restricted, but you are able to pick up a lot of information from sideline behavior. You see certain cliches and see how some players are in the game and others along for the ride. I seem to recall a headband-and-highlights cliche that never seamed too interested in the game. Funny how they are now developing into under-achieving, trouble-makers.

IMG was incredibly involved during the contract negotiation process last winter; yet, there were clearly absent during this episode. Does anyone know if Leach terminated his IMG relationship after the contract fiasco? Given how IMG handled that situation, I don’t think this outcome would have been any different. I just thought they would be more involved if a relationship still existed.

Craig James strikes again

My anger at the administration is nothing compared to what I feel about this dick. First he cheats while at SMU and helps bring down that program. He leaves that pile of ashes behind him and makes millions for himself. I never heard him express any regrets for his part in that debacle. Now he sneaks around to that complete moron of an AD we have and whines like a typical little league parent, and turns another program into a pile of ashes. He doesn’t care how many lives he destroys or how many programs he wrecks as long as he gets what he wants. That is one sorry excuse for a human being. Gauging from Adam’s spoiled behavior, it would appear his own son is another of his victims – he just doesn’t know it yet.

by TechFirst on Dec 30, 2009 5:18 PM CST reply actions

I won't let the door hit me on the way out

Barring some huge revelation that Leach has been eating babies out of the back of an orphanage in Lubbock, I simply can’t be a fan of any program managed by this administration. In high school, Texas Tech was the only school I applied to and I was happy to go to school there. Lubbock is a great town and Tech is an otherwise respectable school. My moral fibre, personal belief system, or whatever-you-call-it dictates that my relationship with the school must finally come to an end.

I believe in cooperatism ethics. I was introduced to this line of thinking in Henry Hazlitt’s The Foundations of Morality. In the book he wrote that "Ethics must take into consideration not merely the immediate but the longer effects of any act or rule of action; it must consider the consequences of that act or rule of action not merely for the agent or any particular group but for everybody likely to be affected, presently or in the future, by that act or rule of action."

I think that TTU did what they (selfishly) thought was in their best long-term interest. As a fan, I have realized that their best interests and my best interest aren’t aligned. On top of that, the way that they go about forwarding their interests is underhanded. They have proven to be untrustworthy.

College sports programs are nothing but a business and you have to hit a business where it hurts. You have to hit them in the pocketbook because that may be all that matters to them. Buying merchandise, event tickets, or even contributing to TV viewership is a sign of support. You may think you are only supporting the school or the players, but you are also supporting the administration. You are enabling – even rewarding – their behavior.

I do not believe that you can look at the events that transpired this week and conclude that this was anything less than a hatchet job on Leach executed by Texas Tech with the help of the James family. He was wronged. I cannot look the other way. I cannot condone what happened. Remaining a fan of TTU athletics would be doing exactly that.

This was not a simple coaching change. Those of us that are leaving were not T-shirt fans. This isn’t about a bad football season. This is about right and wrong. Sticking around means that you agree with what happened and how it happened.

I’m taking the high road. I hate to leave behind Pat Knight and so many fond memories, but I can always hope that the administration will someday be replaced. It may or may not be too late for me to come back at that point, but I’ll know that my school of (first) choice may finally be in good hands.

I plan to lurk around the boards as I get ready for the trip to SA and my final TTU event. After that, I wish everyone the best regardless of which direction they choose to travel. I hope it is the principled one.

I got it wrong

Tech wasn’t even acting in their own long-term best interest. They honestly thought they could force this a crazy agreement on Leach and then withold $800k from him for not signing it. Hance sounded like a moron on ESPN, but I understand that he is trying to spin this his way. He should have said that en employer shouldn’t be surprised when an employee sues them for standing between them and $800k.

by Quatroux on Dec 30, 2009 11:25 PM CST up reply actions

Shocking

I just listened to ESPN during the half time of this bowl game between BGSU and Idaho. Holtz did a good commentary. The others essentially character assasinated him. They said there are guys on the team now speaking up about how Leach was abusive to the players. None of the news the other two reported is current and sounds like pure speculation. They did not report how there has been a lot of info coming out about how current and past players are speaking up in support of Leach. No comments on how current and past coaches are speaking up in support of Leach. The ESPN party line is that Leach was abusive and there are other issues we will never know about that contributed to this. Sounds like they are rallying to Craig James. Bet his son isn’t playing at Tech or any other major University after the bowl game.

My feeling as an alum and season ticket holder is that they should have fired Gerald Myers. Leach is one of the best things to have ever happened to Tech Football.

AJ editor

was interviewed by phone on ESPN2 and also reported that past players are very supportive of Leach including past coaches. He had up to the minute news on this issue and it doesn’t sound like Leach has abused anyone.

I heard the supposed small equipment closet is actually a large temporary equipment building that the offensive lineman go to cool down in during practice. It is air conditioned. The other room is a media room of some sort that also is air conditioned. Doubt with the cold weather we have had that overheating is an issue.

Rumor is that Ryan wasn’t much of a hard working guy. Rumor is that Ryan was a complainer and spent a lot of time on the cell phone during practice texting while the team worked hard. Rumor is that Craig was on the phone a lot asking Leach why his son didn’t get more playing time. Rumor is that Leach offered Ryan a scholarship when no other division 1 school would as a favor to Craig James. Now Craig James has stabbed him in the back if these things are true. If not, my apologies for spreading rumors, but isn’t that what ESPN is doing? They certainly aren’t reporting any facts.

I wish they would have fired Myers and signed Leach for a Lifetime contract. I guess I should have asked Santa for that…

My season tickets and RRC membership have been cancelled. I challenge each of you to do the same.

This administration obviously has no concern for the fan base and its opinion. That being the case, we must communicate our feelings in the only language they understand — funding. Everything this administration covets is predicated on access to additional funding. If we fail to remit our donations, fail to lobby our elected officials for additional state funding . . . perhaps the administration and BOR will realize how we have been failed. And this is not based purely upon this episode. The contract debacle and the accreditation issues should have been established a sufficient basis, but this just puts it over the top.

Mcneil says "double yes"?

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – In a news conference on Wednesday afternoon from San Antonio, Interim Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Ruffin McNeill said “double-yes” when asked if he would like to become head coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Also in the news conference, he addressed the news of Leach’s firing, and what he will say to his friend when he talks to him.

According to the University’s website, the Red Raiders Defensive Coordinator is one of the most versatile coaches on the staff and also one of the most beloved by the team.

McNeill is currently in his 10th season with the Raiders.

Texas Tech has not commented on a possible replacement for Leach. At this time, McNeill is acting as head coach leading up to and during the Alamo Bowl.

Tech releases statement

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Texas Tech releases a statement on the termination of Football Coach Mike Leach.

The statement reads as follows:

After reviewing all the information available, Texas Tech University has decided that the best course of action for the university and its football program is to terminate its relationship with Head Football Coach Mike Leach for cause.

Texas Tech was prepared to participate in the legal proceeding today on coach Leach’s motion for a temporary restraining order. His attorney, however, chose to not participate when he was informed that the termination of coach Leach was inevitable.

The coach’s termination was precipitated by his treatment of a player after the player was diagnosed with a concussion. The player was put at risk for additional injury. After the university was apprised of the treatment, Coach Leach was contacted by the administration of the university in an attempt to resolve the problem. In a defiant act of insubordination, Coach Leach continually refused to cooperate in a meaningful way to help resolve the complaint. He also refused to obey a suspension order and instead sued Texas Tech University. Further, his contemporaneous statements make it clear that the coach’s actions against the player were meant to demean, humiliate and punish the player rather than to serve the team’s best interest. This action, along with his continuous acts of insubordination, resulted in irreconcilable differences that make it impossible for coach Leach to remain at Texas Tech.

“It is our number one priority to protect the welfare of our students and the reputation of the Texas Tech University. Parents have entrusted us with their children and we take this responsibility very seriously. We very much appreciate the leadership shown by the university’s athletic director, Gerald Myers, and president, Guy Bailey, in dealing with this unfortunate situation. The board supports their decision,” said Larry Anders, chairman and Jerry Turner, vice chairman of the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents.

In the near future, Texas Tech will undertake a search for a new coach. In the meantime, the focus of the athletic department is on the preparation for the Alamo Bowl.

by G. Kevin on Dec 30, 2009 6:22 PM CST reply actions

Either this statement is too vague or they have no substantial reason for firing Leach.

by TT4EVER on Dec 30, 2009 6:27 PM CST up reply actions

I justifications have started

I’m getting e-mails now from “insiders” in Lubbock that Leach flipped off the president of the university in a meeting. That seems like a good reason to destroy the football program. Cut off your nose to spite your face. I think the one thing Meyers, Hance, Bailey and any of the other other local heroes never understood was that in Leach they were dealing with a singular talent and not a traditional employee. They expected traditional employee deference & instead they should have treated him like an indulged child the way film studios treat the most talented film stars & directors or the art world treats its great painters. Genius lives by its own rules. And if you doubt the singular genius of Mike Leach, look at the offenses in the Big 12 in 1998 and look at them today. We had a man who is revolutionizing college football ready to continue serving Texas Tech University & we ran him off because he wasn’t an ass kisser. That’s just fricking brilliant. Well done gentlemen.

You aren’t Albert Einstein or Winston Churchill. Churchill was a royal pain in the ass to every person he ever worked with. He also saved western civilization from the Nazis. Leach never worked for Texas Tech or it’s administrators. He rented his talents to them. There is a difference.

employee behavior

ok, so maybe Leach should not have flipped off the Pres., he could have simply thrown a salad at him, that’s not nearly as bad

sonny dykes offense has put up ZERO points>>>>

by WreckerRaider on Dec 30, 2009 8:24 PM CST reply actions

Sorry, it’s been there but we haven’t always seen it. It’s the same players right now that are putting up 20 points. All about confidence and player health.

ESPN on the Hance/James wagon

I don’t care how much a coach pleases the President, AD, Chancellor or the freakin’ waterboys….does he please the people that put money in the universities coffers? Namely us! keep building on that stadium so more people can watch Willie and Bon Jovi….that will be your best crowds from now on!

Hance's enlightening comments on ESPN

ya it’s all about egos, which, let’s not forget also includes the James’ and the administration’s’collective egos as well…if it were any other benchwarmer on the team this would have never been a story at all…

Lubbock hated Buddy Holly for playing Rock & Roll

I read the Avalanche-Journal microfiche from the day after he died. His relatives swore he promised to return home to record a gospel album. That was the only way they could see to justify his sinfulness in creating timeless rock & roll. Someday they will be naming parks & boulevards after Mike Leach in Lubbock. Just not today. Leach & Natalie Maines should have a beer together tonight.

You're Kidding Right?!?!

Leach did not go on a stage in front of thousands of foreign Tech fans ON foreign soil and state that he was embarassed that Bailey was Tech president….he flipped him off in a private office meeting. Natalie will not have a street named after her.

So where is the flipping off being reported ; )

by TT4EVER on Dec 30, 2009 9:29 PM CST reply actions

It’s not…mbrown603 heard it from an “insider.”

by G. Kevin on Dec 30, 2009 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

The insider was the manager of one of the TV network affiliates in Lubbock. The e-mail asked me to call them for details & so I could be placated by the story, but it only pisses me off more that the pig headed Tech administrators would push Leach to the point where he felt that flipping them off was the only way he could get through to them.
