Post Game Thoughts :: Washington 92, Texas Tech 99

SBN Box Score :: TTU Box Score

The Result :: Tremendous: I really thought that this was a game that the Huskies would ultimately win, especially as they're picked to win the Pac-10, but there's something about playing on the road. Last year, Texas Tech was awful on the road, and in Texas Tech's lone road game, a very close win against SFA, indicates that almost no matter the opponent, playing on the road is tough. Nevertheless, it's still incredibly satisfying for this team to get this win. I've been one of the guys standing behind Pat Knight, I like his style, albeit he's certainly had some rough spots, but I can see the potential and I can see how players would want to play for him. He's still finding his way, and there are going to be some bad losses with this team, but I still like what he's doing.

The Storylines ::

Athletes, Athletes, Athletes: That was not your typical Bob Knight team. It took a season for Pat Knight to transform his team from a typical Bob Knight team (2008) to a team with much better athletes. I loved how the Texas Tech perimeter defense was basically able to switch with just about every Washington player, and that seemingly made it incredibly difficult for UW to get into much of rhythm outside as the Huskies were only 4-15 from the 3-point line. Perhaps the most impressive part was seeing the very long and athletic SF Brad Reese play the point on defense. That's a tough thing for a small point guard to have to around a long 6'6" player and that's not something that could have been done last year. I'd also add that Pat Knight had, for very long stretches of the game, no true post player (i.e. Darko Cohadarevic and Robert Lewandowski), instead opting for a combination of guards and smallish forwards that played really well. This smallish lineup still out-rebounded Washington 42 to 37, something that you just don't see from a typical Texas Tech team.

More storylines after the jump.

Star-divide

In Control Roberson: That's the PG John Roberson I want to see more of from this point forward. Roberson didn't force very much in the first half, taking only 3 shots, but dishing out 5 assists and turning the ball over only 2 times. He was truly a floor leader and didn't look for his shot until the second half, when I think he could sense the offense dragging a bit and scored 9 of his 25 points in the second half.

Transition Defense: With better defense comes better transition defense and Washington had only 6 fast break points for the entire game. It really didn't matter if it was Reese, G David Tairu, SF Mike Singletary, G Nick Okorie, SF Theron Jenkins or PF D`Walyn Roberts, all of these guys are buying into the defense and they are all getting back to man-up or are athletic enough to block shots and make it difficult for an opponent. This is a different team, perhaps not as good of a shooting team, but a different team athletically and it's pretty interesting to watch.

Washington is Pretty Good: I had no idea what to expect from the Huskies, I'm still working my way into basketball mode, but I thought that they were an athletically gifted team and some tremendous players. This is a good team, that's going to have to learn how to play on the road, just like every team in the country, but this is a really good win for this Texas Tech program. I watched a bit of the USC vs. Texas game afterwards and thought that the Longhorns are equally as athletic, but haven't yet figured out how to play as a team. I don't think that the Red Raiders are as athletically gifted as Texas, but the gap is much, much closer than it has been in previous years.

Game Flow and Four Factors: I love these graphs from StatSheet and I hope you do too:

The Offensive Co-MVP's :: PG John Roberson and SF Brad Reese: Roberson had a tremndous line (Pts: 25; Reb: 2; Ast: 7; Stl: 2; TO: 4) and kept Texas Tech in the game in the 2nd half. Reese (Pts: 17; Reb: 5; Ast: 1; Stl: 1; Blk: 2; TO: 2) was the key in the first half and was electric. I thought watching the game that it's been a long time since the Red Raiders had a 6'6" guy step up and hit 3-point shots the way Reese did. That's pretty fun to watch.

The Defensive MVP :: PF D`Walyn Roberts: Roberts' stat line isn't going to be too terribly impressive (Pts: 8; Reb: 5; Ast: 0; Stl: 0; Blk: 2; TO: 0), but I thought he did a pretty good job of battling inside. I have a feeling that the inside players may not have pretty stat lines for a good part of the season, but their play will be very important throughout the year.

really nice win last night

I had been slowly building some optimism about this team due to the absence of the typical horrible OOC loss, and this confirms that we might have an interesting squad in Lub this year

Offensive MVP + Other thoughts

In addition to John’s stat line – we should note that he went 13-13 for free throws during the game. And of course, made the call from zone to man-to-man during OT that made the steal possible.

I really did not believe Seth about Tech being more athletic until I watched the game last night (my first time seeing the team this year). Its clear we move much better than last year.

Delta’s (things I’d change) from the game:
Turnovers. Granted we had the same number as Washington, but I think we can still cut ours down. Love our tenancity though.
Attendance: Students and crowd was loud and had an impact on the game. However, the upper deck was totally empty. Hopefully this team gets a few more wins under their belt and the place sells out for conference games!.

Wreck em! Great win!

just read the diatribe

I want to add a shout out / MVP to the managers who went door to door passing out flyers in the tech dorm. Great stuff. It made a impact!

I can agree on turnovers just because we really have made some godawful boneheaded ones. seemed like Darko threw 3 balls that weren’t anywhere close to another red raider. There were a few more that I don’t mind where the player was trying to do something spectacular that almost worked. It didn’t get replayed, but Roberts was making a cut to the basket and the man with the ball (Roberson? Okorie?) tried a bounce pass between the defender’s legs to him. It didn’t make it to Roberts because it was a surprise to him too, but would have been a top 10 play if he had connected.

Crowd was much better

Students and fans, THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT!!! You were the sixth man!

After six embarrassing low attendance games the folks finally came for a big one. The student support was expecially great. This team is fun to watch. Everyone else who had previously lost interest, get out there and support these guys!

This team deserves sellouts to big games like this one. They will be competitive against everyone this year, especially at home.

Almost 10,000 in attendance

And most of those were students. I was hoping for a full lower bowl, but I think the cold kept people away. At game time, it was snowing.

How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!

What a Game

It’s been a long time since I watched Tech play at that level and I must admit I was surprised. Great effort and a huge win. This group of athletes could go a long way.

I was there for my last home game as a student

I def. picked a good one to go to!!! though it was a little crazy, I’m a 6’4" 320lb guy and felt like was going to be killed in the rush of the court the first time, I got my leg pinned against a seat… Bruise to prove it too… But oh man was it awesome. Sad to leave it and miss the Big XII games next semester!!! Hope the students keep going to it!!!!

Wreck 'Em Tech!

Not real knowledgable with basketball since I only watch March Madness…but all the missed free throws killed UW. It was great to see Tech do really well on a national stage, though.

Humbled

I was expecting a big loss, but the Raiders really played better than I expected and beat an arguably better team. Good job, Tech. BEAT TCU!

Won in true Tech fashion

Rushed the court…multiple times….

We're watching the same game

Seth, you and I had almost identical write-ups for this game. Good stuff. Reese was like a shutdown corner on Isaiah Thomas. I was motivated.

I looked back this morning

and you’re right, there are similar thoughts. I think it’s almost shocking how more athletic this team is. You put Theron Jenkins on last year’s team and he immediately becomes the 3rd most athletic guy on the team, probably behind Roberts and Okorie. On this year’s team, he may be behind Roberts, Okorie, Reese, and Tairu (still trying to figure out how athletic he actually is).

Go Raiders . . .

Seth and I saw the same thing in Roberson, he was playing point guard about as well as it could be played. To hit 13/13 from the line is pretty spectacular.

I think Singletary is trying to do too much. He would do something really nice, then a boneheader like taking a shot that he really was not ready or in good position to take. He is playing more defense than in the past and that is a double plus.

by TallMike on Dec 4, 2009 4:09 PM CST reply actions

whole team was trying to do too much late in the second half

by RdrPwr on Dec 4, 2009 4:40 PM CST up reply actions

Well, I Got Caught Up In The Statistically Safe Concept

It implies you are safe when you have X points lead with Y seconds remaining.

Lead at time left in game (secs):

2 @ 0.25
3 @ 0.25
4 @ 2.25
5 @ 6.25
6 @ 12.24
7 @ 20.25
8 @ 30.25
9 @ 42.25
10 @ 56.25

You’re Welcome !!

Nerdily Yours,

Good Game!

Believe me, the Huskies are head and shoulders better than last year— and they dropped their first road game to Portland State last year. I was rooting for my Dawgs, but enjoyed the game completely. It’s always tough when you go on the road for that first game- and then to play as well coached and talented a team as Tech….
\
Some whining up here about the officiating— but I liked it. Let the kids play. All in all, a great game.
I know you guys are going to have a fantastic season, and we’ll look for you in March!!!

Thanks a bunch!!

Does this mean I have to put you in the same category as the Nebraska fan base?
