Are you a "pull for the conference guy"?
Just curious to see how many of us fall into this mind frame. For me it's easy to answer...No. I know all the money and the conference as whole gets with wins and recruiting attention etc.. but I just really enjoy a UT and A&M loss as much as I enjoy a Tech win. I also understand the Big 12 vs. SEC competition thing. My wife asked me if I wanted to see UT win the NC game and I thought absolutely not. Am I alone on this or do many of you find yourselves as selfish as myself when it comes this?

I think the SEC is a much stronger conference than the Big 12.
They are on a higher level, I believe.

Interesting Question
Obviously, I’m a Texas fan, but I will usually route for the conference against non-conference teams because I hate it when people talk down on the Big XII. I don’t think I’ve ever routed against Tech in a nonconference game. I will generally route for Texas teams in the conference over non-Texas teams. However, it all depends on the year and the situation. I was routing for OU against USC in the MNC a few years ago, but I was routing for UF last year, just because of the way the whole Big XII tie-breaker went down. This year, I will be routing for all of the Big XII teams.
I wish the Big XII was more like the SEC and the Big Ten, where everyone seems to want the other conference teams to do well (even Auburn/Alabama and Michigan/tOSU fans), but I realize that this conference is not nearly that well connected. It’s a marriage of convenience.

I believe the word you are looking for is ROOT
You can root for your team (cheer them on) and hope that they utterly smash their opponents (create a rout), then come back in triumph on Route 27 (a road).

Ohio State - Michigan NEVER root for each other.
A lot of my family went to Ohio State and I can tell you that they never EVER EVER will root for Michigan to win in anything. Anytime the Wolverines step onto the field my mom hopes they get blown out. In terms of just another team in the SEC / BIg Ten, I know what you are saying though.

I guess it depends on the Michigan/tOSU fan
Most of the Michigan fans I know will be routing for tOSU against Oregon in the Rose Bowl. I guess I don’t know many Ohio State fans.

UT barely beat a fairly mediocre NU team.
Bama completely dominated the defending nat. champs and made Tebow cry. Their coaching schemes, play-calling, and players all seemed superior to me, and then I watched the Texas game. It seemed like watching a pro game, then watching a college game. I will be very surprised if UT beats Bama.

I agree
Florida has such a better spread scheme than Texas, as simple as it is… it makes the Longhorn playbook look like it belongs in Jr. High. That being said, Bama schemed it perfectly on Defense… Texas really doesn’t match up in ANY area in this game and IMO will get blown out of the water.

That seems to be the general concensus
I’m looking forward to the game because I think Texas matches up pretty well in this game. Obviously, we have to play better on offense than we did against Nebraska and better on defense than we did against A&M, but Alabama will need to play better on offense than they did against Tennessee and better on defense than they did against Auburn. I think it will be a defensive struggle with a few big plays providing the difference.

I pull for the Big XII
except for OU. Maybe if Stoops goes to lose games for the Irish and/or their boosters pay fewer players, that will change.
My rationale is that the best thing for Tech is that the conference represent well for all of the reasons listed above. Though I am generally not heartbroken if another team in the conference loses.

My Beef with the Nation
Is that they already have this negative view of the Big 12, time and time again all I read about is how people view the Big 12 as the most over rated conference and blah blah blah. To me it is unfortunate that people see things this way because truly we are one of the strongest… This being said, losses by OSU to UH, losses from us to UH, Oklahoma losing to BYU, A&M losing to everyone out of conference that isn’t D2, topped with several flop performances over that past few bowl seasons… sometimes its hard to disagree.
I find it hard because I really hate the “top teams” in our conference, and hate it even more when they are successful and we aren’t. If we have a good showing in our bowl game and represent how we should then I will probably find myself routing for some of our Big 12 brethren….
However, I in no way feel that UT deserves to 1) play in the NC game, or 2) win said game. UT is NOT the #2 team in the country and the only reason they got the nod is because ole coach Brown spent all offseason bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen about how they were robbed of their ‘right’ to play in the championship game.
So I WILL be routing for OU to beat Stanford for sure, OSU to lose to Ole Miss (they gave us hell for that last year), ISU to at least show up, Nebraska to win v Arizona, A&M to lose to Georgia…. And for UT I want a humiliation game, the kind of loss that makes the program look horrible, and with Colt and Shipley leaving in the offseason, along with many defensive players I want next year to be one rough rebuilding year thats for sure! I mean Colt’s backup has played how many snaps this year????

The Same As You, 92
I didn’t used to be that way. I used to support any Texas team against an outsider, and to a lesser extent any conference team over an OOC team. I had been that way since I was a kid.
But not any more. Blame it on the internet, I guess. I’ve grown to despise the teams whose trolls come over here and talk trash. I know that we’re only talking about a tiny fraction of a team’s fans, but if you go peruse their websites it’s just more of the same. You wouldn’t believe the trash they were talking at BON and Barking Carnival before the UT-NU game. ’They’re not even in the same class as us’ was the typical sentiment from those arrogant whorns, along with ‘When are we going to get out of this chickenshit conference with the 11 little sisters’. It’s awfully hard to support a school whose students/grads talk like that (not everyone at BON is a t-shirt fan). And I get the same from the UT guys at work.
I’m still a conference guy except when it comes to UT, atm, and OU (and maybe OSU, too. They trash us every chance they get on their site.). Just compare the compliments we got from NU fans this year with the barrage of insults we got after 39-33. Hell, there’s a couple of whorn trolls that still haven’t stopped.

Not this year
I am normally a fan of the Big 12 when bowl season rolls around (and in non-conference games for that matter). Part of it is liking to see our opponents succeed so there is more on the line when we play them, and part of it is conference strength vs the other BCS AQ leagues.
This year is different though. UT has been unimpressive in several of its wins… TCU deserves to be playing in the NC. I’d love to see UT get blown out. Otherwise I’m with Vassago, the Big 12 has already done more than enough to prove we are well below the SEC this year so there is no need to try and prove anything.
Plus, the media has ruined me on Tebow, Mccoy, and Shipley… to say I hate them with the fire of a 1000 burning suns would be going too far (from what I can tell they are all actually pretty good kids), but the media has played the buddy card, and God’s gift to football too much for me to want to see them succeed. As unfair as it is to the rest of the UT players, I hope they get blown out just to see Mccoy and Shipley lose. I honestly plan to watch the NC game on ‘mute’ just so I don’t have to hear repeats of last Saturday like… ‘Oh, Mccoy’s pass complete to his good buddy Shipley’. It also made my day to see Tebow lose.
I do plan to root for Nebraska though, as they are the class of this conference hands down. I’ll root for everyone else in the Big 12 too for the most part just for lack of any real motivation to root against them. Okie State is the exception to that… I always like to see them lose too.

Big 12 guy
I don’t envy other people’s success. I have to say that I generally pull for every Big 12 team, although I am a Tech alum. McCoy and Shipley seem like basically good guys and it’s not their fault we live in a stupid media country or chose the wrong school to attend. There are some jerks/dirty player on UT’s teams (you know who I mean). That I don’t root for.
The team I have the hardest time supporting is A&M, because of their fans and traditions, plus I knew the first graduating Maggie and still can’t believe the A&M Prez refused to shake her hand when she got her diploma. Arrogance is one thing; unearned arrogance is repulsive.
As far as UT goes, they were not all that impressive the last few weeks. But until they met on the field, Florida HAD been impressive and Alabama was hot and cold. Any team can have a below-par game, or two, or three…Good teams still win those. Is Tech really that much better than OU or Nebraska this year? I don’t think so. I also don’t think we have a inferior team to A&M or Houston. But the scores if isolated would make it seem that way.
UT will play much better than most people are predicting. That was Alabama’s best game in years, and everyone is on the bandwagon. Their athletes are not better than Texas. The question is how well UT’s and Bama’s assistants put together a game plan and how well the head coaches can motivate them.
In the meantime, let’s get Tech on track to beat the hell out of Michigan State. We need more great athletes and a bowl win might keep us in the running for a few of these guys!

All for the Conference . . .
except when tamu steps on the field (went there pre-TTU and absolutely despise that cult). Since UT is in the big game, I hope they take it. And, I hope TCU beats the snot out of the perennial whiners (aka Boise St.). I believe TCU is the best team in Texas right now and would have a better change against Bama, but bowl selection is beyond my pay grade.

Should be All for the Conference
I know we really should be all for the conference but due to the arrogance of UT fans in my area (SA), it brings out my disgust for the Horns I acquired while at Tech in the 70’s. We are loaded with UT fans that did no go there there (my brother and law is the worst) and the arrogance is nauseating. My wifes first cousin has UT season tickets, could not go to the game, but refused to “sell” me his tickets because my stepson (his second cousin) and I went to Tech. I root for all Big 12 except Horns. I hope Bama beats them them like a worn out doormat. And yes, I do think McCoy is a great guy, but UT sucks.

After that I hope every BIG 12 teams takes care of business. As we all know strength of schedule and perception of strength go along way in how our own Tech squad is ranked and perceived. So after Christmas, GO BIG ! But before Christmas, GO TO HELL!

Some are alright, but the tshirt fans that never even attended a JuCo yet still want to talk crap about tech and refer to UT as “we” or “our team” ruin any chance of me rooting them on. Quick, name the bowl record for SEC or Big12 from last year...
Most (if not all) can’t do it off the top of your head. Point is that I believe the conference vs conference discussion and bowl wins by a conference is way overrated.
True it gives the talking heads something to talk about over the course of the 3 weeks. But does anyone really remember once the next season starts?
I could give a crap whether UT wins or loses and certainly won’t “root” for them. Can’t image UT fans rooting for Tech in ANYTHING and especially the NC should we get there.
The one thing I will root for is if it appears UT is going to lose, I’ll root for them to lose BIG. And I mean big like over 35 point loss.
But should they find a way to win, then I’d be okay with that and offer up congrats to them. But I’m sure as hell not rooting for them.

One exception to my rule
I would point out that I tend to root for Big12 conference teams at the start of the season during non-conf games. And that even includes aTm, Ok St, OU and UT. Basically every Big12 team.
Why? It really makes sense to root for wins in as many of these as possible to elevate the conference record. This helps get teams in the top 25 prior to conference play. And helps with strength of schedule once conference play starts. Prime example being Big12 South during ’08 season.

I root for Texas Tech. If its in my interest to have the conference look better then I’ll root for another team, but if that team winning might hurt us in recruiting more than helping “the conference” then I hope they lose. I’ll root for Texas b/c they don’t really impact us in recruiting. They pretty much get who they want. And it will help “the conference”. I’m fine with everyone else losing except Tech and Texas.

B12 teams
aTm v. Georgia – I’ll be rooting for aTm because if they win, it makes Okie. State’s win over UGA seem insignificant. Plus, I HATE the SEC.
Arizona v. Nebraska – I want NU to win. Their fans are awesome and I’m not necessary a Stoops fan.
OU v. Stanford – I’m going for Stanford, just because I want to see OU have a losing season.
Navy v. Missouri – I’m rooting for Mizzou, just to make the B12 North seem not so pathetic.
Minnesota v. Iowa State – I like ISU. I’ll be rooting for them for the same reason I’ll be rooting for Mizzou.
Okie State v. Ole Miss – I hate the SEC. Ole Miss’s “SEC SEC SEC” chant last year disgusted me. Plus, their fans are racist. “The South will rise again!” chant is awful and the university “took action” to stop it. My cousin goes to Tennessee and the Ole Miss section was chanting it the whole game when their fight song ended. I can’t stand “Me Too State” but Ole Miss is worse in my book.
Texas v. Alabama – I hate UT more than any other school. I read their posts after the aTm game and they put down aTm’s team, traditions, and university for 4 paragraphs. We all saw what they wrote after the Tech game this year and what they had to say about how we beat them in a “fluke” game last year and the whole 45 > 35 campaign. I can’t stand Mack Brown and his politicking, their legions of t-shirt fans who didn’t graduate junior college, and their “We’re the class of the Big XII, the other school are like 11 red-headed cousins.” Their arrogance, ignorance, rudeness, soreness in losing and winning, seemingly getting every call go their way, celebrating others’ misfortunes, fair weather fan base, sense of entitlement, wealthy boosters who pay kids to play football there, lack of attention paid (and caring in general) to graduation, thinking they’re the best thing to happen to the sport, and lack of perspective makes it extremely difficult for me to root for their teams and university. I have relatives who are the same way. The fact that I can come up with over 10 reasons off the top of my head as to why I hate UT isn’t a good thing. The media is always quick to jump on the UT bandwagon. When they score on TV, I always hear clapping in the background of the booth. When they lose, it wasn’t their fault. I would love nothing more than to see a 70-0 blowout loss to Alabama. It might doom the conference, but I don’t think UT would recover from that for a while, especially in terms of recruiting.

I always like ranting about texas fans. They’re the worst in sports. Grade A homers. I take back my go aggies statement. I don’t care who wins. I still hate Me Too State though. They copies our guns up, they have Cowboy Power or something like that, and they fire guns when they score. It should be a rivalry game for the simple fact that they copied everything that makes us unique. They even added black to their color scheme. Whenever they start wearing eyepatches it’s time to boycott their “new traditions.”

While attending this year’s game in Stillwater, I actually noticed, on a canopy, or whatever the thing is (tarp) that covers the entrance to the field in the NW corner, that they have, and I don’t know how to post pictures here, they have the face of Pistol Pete in half black, half white as if he has a shadow over one half of his face, hat and all. Now haven’t we had that same logo for quite a while now with the silloute of the masked rider’s face and hate half black and half white?

but I don’t think UT would recover from that for a while, especially in terms of recruiting.
I don’t think this could ever happen. UT is one of those practically invincible schools that should they manage to be a weak team for a period of time, it won’t last long at all. The best recruits will always want to go there…even if they were to go 4-8 next season, they would still pull in a top 10 recruiting class.

I hope they get demolished against Alabama and I think they will. Alabama looks like a pro-team out there. I definetaly do not want UT winning another national title. We will never hear the end of it. At the end of the day, I don’t really get the whole rallying behind the conference thing. It’s like at the Cotton Bowl last year. Ole Miss is kickin our ass in the 4th, and instead of showing some school pride they do their stupid little “SEC, SEC, SEC” chant. That is the dumbest thing ever. I never have and never will be heard chanting “BIG 12 BIG !!” at any sporting event ever.

UT hating
I don’t understand why so many people are saying that UT doesn’t deserve to be in the NC and that TCU does. I was wondering what makes TCU more deserving than UT. Both are undefeated. IMO UT played a tougher schedule. If Tech can’t be in the big game then I want to see the Big 12 represented and play well.

Rebellion against BCS
In my opinion (and the reason I advocate TCU being in the NC) it’s that people are pissed off about the BCS system in general. If there were a playoff this would be a non-issue because TCU could get seeded and earn their way to the top. But as it is, there is no way to say if they could have pulled it off this year. It just points out that the system is flawed. It’s also a little bit of the cinderella/backup QB complex. Everyone knows UT is a traditional power… it gets old… but this year there is a new guy on the block, TCU! I’d love to see them get their shot at another traditional power like Bama just to see if college football has really evened out as much as some people claim.
I don’t think you’ll get any arguments that UT played a tougher schedule. But there isn’t the slightest curiosity deep down in your gut that wonders how TCU would do against Bama? There is always next year for Bama vs UT, but this may be the closest TCU ever gets.
And don’t try to say, ‘Well TCU should just schedule schools like Bama or UT in non-conference games to help their strength of schedule’. Because you and I both know that neither Bama nor UT would ever schedule them for non-conference because they know there is a fair shot of them losing. Losing to another traditional power, but losing to a cinderella like TCU would not be good for their seasons in a system where it seems more and more like you have to be from a BCS conference and have 0 losses to get into the big dance.

Difficulty of schedule and margin of victory. Go look at the computer rankings. At least there is some quantifiable reason in that ranking. The two polls are based on biased human opinion. Remember last year after we beat ut Mack Brown voted ut #1 and us #9. There is no integrity in this system. Look out for #1!

Mack voted Texas 2 and Tech 8 in the only ballot that was released (which was obviously after Tech lost to OU).

Yep
That is correct. If anything, I’m more pissed off at Gary Patterson for the 2008 vote where he put Tech in the 20’s if I remember correctly. I think TCU has a good team, but there is NOTHING to gain by pulling for TCU over a Big12 school.
IMO, if TCU were in the Big12 South this year, they would have given UT, Tech, OSU and OU a run for the division championship. But given the lack of quality teams in their conference, you can’t justify them over UT or even Cincy.
I’ll say this, Patterson is smart to stay there long-term. Good recruiting base and pretty obvious they have an easier path to BCS each year.

One more reason NOT to root for UT
This may be a shock to everyone, but the UT fans I know still believe they were screwed out of the Big12 championship last year regardless of the fact they lost to Tech.
And it isn’t just UT fans. Either Herbie or Musburger made reference to this year’s win being that much better after “what happened last year with UT not going to the Big12 championship” (i.e. they got screwed out of it)
That being said, I don’t think there was an easy solution to 2008. But that doesn’t take away from horn fans omitting Tech from the conversation.

I am all for the Big 12 getting into BSC games and the big dance. However, when UT gets to that last game before a champion is crowned, I always want them to lose.
As much as I want them to get embarssed by Alabama, that would be bad for the big 12. We would have to hear more about how the SEC is better than the Big 12.
So, I will be rooting for a close game, but hopefully UT will pull another brain fart, much like their Nebraska game, that will cost them the game & will haunt their fans forever. Is that too mean?

That as I was talking to our waitress about which school she should attend after HS, and within 5 feet next to people wearing aggie shirts, I rattled off every reason I hate ayunem loud enough for them to hear over my wife’s prompting not to. They need to go back to their hole and keep that crappy coach so long that there is no one alive that can remember the last time they were relevant in any sport. I even made a remark about how she’d be the prettiest girl on campus the moment she got there, so that would be a plus should she choose ayunem. Fake soldiers, cult, sheep humping, I didn’t hold back. My wife was mad at me all night, it was worth it to see the looks on those aggies’ faces, I’m sure they talked about my lack of class. Suck it aggots!

Nice work Jeff
Given the crap I am sure you took from your wife over this, we should all take a minute and congratulate you on a job well done. And if I were in the same position, I would think it worth the grief as well. Nice job.

I think all the SEC love in the south
Is a stand-in for the old Confederacy. When I was a kid they waved Confederate flags & called half their teams Rebels. Since it’s become tricky convincing african american players to perform for schools still nostalgic for slavery, the south has had to set aside the stars & bars as a focus of regional pride. The SEC has become the new Confederacy. That’s why you get the Ole Miss fans leaving the pep rallies around AA Arena in Dallas cheering “SEC! SEC! SEC! SEC!” last year before the Cotton Bowl. I don’t mind seeing conference rivals get embarrased. In fact I really like it. So my answer is no. No love for the Big 12 as an organization.

The Civil War wasn't about slavery.
Just sayin….

Good Luck convincing the recruits' parents of that
You can bring a blackboard & diagram the economics of the conflict as you see them, but it won’t fly with the 4 star wideout or his parents.

Watch out now
I went to a high school where the team was the Rebels and our stands were a sea of confederate flags as we repeatedly went deep in the playoffs. That includes fans of all colors, including folks like Tyrone Thurmond’s mama and her 20 friends. Some guy named Spike Dykes was the coach. The school was Midland Lee and nostalgia for slavery never entered our minds. It’s careless to assume what’s in other people’s hearts.

This will irritate you.....
They no longer run the Rebel flag @ games and they are slowly doing away with the Dixie portion of the fight songs……
Idiotic Parents that are alumni all the sudden want change.

My high school was destroyed by Lee in the state finals but we only had a few days to prepare if you remember the Katy debacle of 1999 i believe. Cedric Benson was a beast that day as he rushed for over 200 yards. I knew when the Rebels did an onside kick to start the game that we were in serious trouble.

You welcome.
Cedric still is a beast. He drug me for 15 yards everyday from 6th grade until we graduated. Pain to say the least. He can run. He was a linebacker most of the time until we started our sophmore year.
My old man was never prouder when he saw me play at Texas Stadium that year. I was just a sophmore in highschool. Then we played there a lot and it lost it’s luster after awhile.
The best one was playing in UT 2 times. Loved that!!

I was talking to my UT friends during MNF and told them that one reason why there is so much hate is due to the media. We live in Dallas and the Dallas Morning News covers them more than they do the local universities, SMU and even this season’s TCU squad that is having a historic season. There are local beat writers i.e. Chuck Carlton, Kevin Sherrington who have man crushes on Colt McCoy and Mack Brown. They constantly write about how great colt, shipley, etc are and put them on a higher level than normal citizens. The local radio sports talk on espn 103.3 every now and then features that moronic, uneducated convict Nate Newton who constantly brags about his son. He says he speaks in an unbiased way but no one ever bothers to remind him that he sucks at doing that. (Randy Galloway though calls Texas “The Whiny Orange”-I love the guy for that, he’s an exception). Nate talks about how great the Texas is every time he is in front of the mike and no one I talk to really cares. They also bring Chip Brown on from Rivals every week. So we live in Dallas, and turn on talk radio to hear about the Cowboys, but hear about the Horns so much that it is sickening to hear about their daily updates.
Basically what I told my buddies were that UT stands for everything with what’s going on today—a powerful administration, alumni base, wealthy donors that looks down at other institutions and emitting a “we’re-better-than-the-average-working class citizen”. THat type of attitude ends up transferring to the fans (even the T-shirt ones) and because of that, they are hated. I know fans of the other dominant universities i.e. Ohio State, Florida, USC and they are nothing like Texas fans and their followers.
Surprisingly, my friends agreed but tell me it has not always been that way. They went to school during the Mackovic days and were then a mid-tier team.
Back to the point at hand, I hope for a Texas beatdown by Bama and hope Nick Saban and squad show up and not lose this one. I used to live in Boston and hated hearing about the Patriots and Red Sox. After they won their first championships in their sports, it made me sick to hear from their arrogant fans. But thanks to the New York Giants and Anaheim Angels in recent years, the fans have gone quieter. On January 7th, I will be a huge Bama fan and hope they silence Longhorn nation for a few more years before they get on the big stage again.

+1
In the Mackovic days, there was no more annoying, patronizing school in the state (maybe the country) than aTm. Several terrible years have “humbled” them and at MINIMUM Tech now gets at least GRUDGING respect from the Aggie faithful. But during the fall of the Aggies, the ‘horns have risen to their place both in terms of team strength (Aggie was the bully back then) and fan annoyance factor. Just typing that makes me realize it’s the PERFECT descriptor for UT: they are a BULLY in all senses of the word. Living in Austin has amplified the problem for me personally, but nothing bothers me more than the fan HYPOCRISY coming out of UT. If UT is the top dog, then you hear nothing but “have some conference pride” as they implore you to root for Texas. (if it’s OU in that game, all the ‘horns LOVE seeing their opponent stick it to them, nevermind their smug enjoyment of our loss in last year’s Cotton Bowl) I have absolutely NO doubt that if it were Tech in the MNC game, UT fans would NOT root for us. At BEST they would be indifferent as they pretend they don’t care about football anymore (ala, the Mackovic days) and more likely they’d happily root AGAINST uss and hope for our failure. And any ‘horn fans who want to CLAIM they’d do otherwise, we’ll see once we get there. If longhorns support and pull for the Red Raiders once we win the conference, then I’ll return the favor. Until then, I’ve got to listen to Longhorn smugness EVERY DAY, and at worst I only need to peek at SEC smugness maybe 20-30 days (max) a year.

Kinda changes my mind that I pull for big 12 after I see how Leach and Stoops voted in poll.
I guess I hate TEXAS more than I thought…
GO BAMMA!

Conference; Texas Longhorns
When I started reading the posts, I knew that I was for every conference team except one, but I couldn’t remember which team I was against.
Texas vs Alabama. Certainly I am for Texas. Texas has always been one of my favorite teams. Darryl Royal went to Oklahoma with my father. (My father was the best player on the field, when he was on the field.) I grew up cheering for Indiana and Purdue, then Oklahoma and Texas. If I didn’t have this background, I would still be for Texas. I like a man who makes a commitment and keeps it. I would have difficulty cheering for the Alabama coach. I like Mr. McCoy and Mr. Shipley. I like the safeties. If the other receivers can play well; if the offensive line can find some confidence (they were totally whipped before the middle of the second quarter aganist Nebraska) this should be a great game.
I want all the Big 12 teams to win except Missouri. I cheered against the Naval Academy when they played Texas Tech. I don’t intend to cheer against them again.
One of the posters asked if we could remember the count from last year. I remember very little, but at the time, I had the running count. The bowl games legitimize (is that a real word, or did I just make it up?) the season.
Go Tech.
Respectfu…
Wait a minute. I bet you wonder what my father played. He played baritone horn.
Respectfully,
Paul M. Simons
