Things to discuss while we wait for the Alamo Bowl

Since we have almost 3 weeks until our beloved Red Raiders duke it out with Michigan State in San Antonio and we can only cover so many things in a three week span, I think we should discuss a few topics while we're waiting for the bowl games.

Item #1: With Graham Harrell, what would our record be right now?

Item #2: Top 5 surprises this year (in the whole NCAA)

Item #3: Do you think we should have a playoff?  Why or why not?

Item #4: If you think we should have a playoff, what format would you choose (be creative)?  If you think we should stick with the BCS would you make any modifications?

Item #5: Bowl predictions (I think we should have a DTN Bowl Pick 'Em)

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

I guess I'll start off Item #1. We can add more if this turns out to be pretty popular.

1. I honestly think we’re 13-0 right now. The defense has been fantastic for the most part, aside from the A&M game. The main reason for our losses has been inconsistent QB play. Graham was so quick getting rid of the ball that he didn’t have to think about anything. He was automatic. Potts is talented, but he’s not automatic yet. Sheffield was great until he got injured and then Leach went with Potts again (which I think is a mistake).

Not with this Oline

Even Harrell would have struggled at times with this Oline. As good as GH is, you can’t make all the good reads if you’re getting knocked down. We probably have a better chance of winning all the games except A&M where our defense was flat embarrassed, but I don’t think we would have won them all with the oline struggles we had all year.

I. It is irrelevant, the past is the past, chicks don’t dig guys who live there. Embrace the now.
II. 1. The fact that UT is playing for the crystal football.
    2. The fall of USC and Oklahoma (too much talent to be that bad.)
    3. How fast June Jones turned things around at SMU
    4. The lack of Big 12 teams in the top 25
    5. The demise of the Blond Cheerleader, You just don’t see as many as you use to.
III. You traveled to Borneo, hack your way into the darkest jungle and find the wife of
Japanese solder who had be hiding out since the end of WWII and asked to speak to
her sister who was the product of a union between a sister and brother and was
deaf, dumb and blind. You then describe the BCS to this woman the answer you will
get is, “your kidding me, that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.”
IV. A cage mach between Conference champion head cheerleaders would beat the
current system. (Blond CL would make it even better)
V. TECH wins I don’t care after that.

VIVA LA FIGA!

What do you have against dark haired cheerleaders?!

1. Can’t live in the past but in an ideal world Sticks would be our starter. If this were an ideal world i would have ten fingers on my left hand and only a fist on my right.
2. BMAXW nailed this one. I would also add that the craziness of the Pac 10 has been surprising. Hat tip to June Jones, Brian Kelly, Gary Patterson, Kirk Cameron, and the Tech defense.
3. Yes, absolutely.
4. Top 16 or maybe 32 teams, each game could be sponsored by one of the current bowl sponsors. Instead of a month off we could have games every weekend! Yeah, i just peed a little bit.
5. Thank goodness were not playing Iowa in the Alamo Bowl. I can’t handle another pathetic showing in my hometown. Tech wins, that’s all I really care about.

I love the playoff idea, but I wonder how it would work with finals. I’m also wondering how you could do “top X” when the big conferences will want automatic bids for their top teams. Things would be easier if all conference teams played each other. That would be like a round robin that could feed into a national tournament.

If you go with a straight playoff then I’m with Leach and Bob Knight. You need a lot of teams (32 or 64). I also like BK’s statement that a conference tournament (or championship) is like telling the kids that the regular season didn’t matter. I hope football doesn’t water down regular season games like basketball.

great question

1. I think with Harrel we would be a 1 loss team this year.
2. OU’s lack of play, UT in NC game, TCU in BCS, The knock out punch by an Oregon player in the start of the season, Washington beating USC.
3. Absolutely a playoff system or grant more than one undefeated team a NC.
4. 16 team playoff
5. UT & A&M loose, Tech wins, OSU wins, NU wins,

Rep. Joe Barton’s take on the BCS.

It sure give me something to ponder while waiting for the Alamo bowl.

 1. Harrel or Sheffield — 10-2

The Season

-10 game season (8 conf. and 2 non-conf.)
-A hat containing 13 strips of white paper and 13 strips of black paper in put in the middle of the room. Someone representing each of the preseason top 25 (plus an honorable mention) draws from the hat. If you draw white, you’re home. If you draw black, you’re away. The representative of each school writes the name of their university on the strip of paper and puts it in one of the two designated hats (one for home and the other for away). The NCAA commissioner (or another high ranking person) then draws one strip of paper from the home hat and another strip of paper from the away hat. These two teams will play each other in their first game of the season. This process repeats until all of the teams are drawn.
-The order the games will be played correlates to the order drawn. One game will be played each night 10 days before the “official” week one of college football. The three remaining games will be aired at 12:00, 3:30, and 7:30 PM on the Saturday of the “official” week one of the college football season.
-The preseason top 25 teams cannot schedule an FCS opponent.
-That eliminates teams like Texas and Florida from playing four nobody teams in their non-conference games.
-Conference championship games will be eliminated.
-Divisions will remain intact.

The Playoff

-16 team playoff.
-The #16 and #17 teams will have a play-in game a week before the playoffs starts.
-Conference winners ARE NOT guaranteed a spot in the playoffs.

First Round

-A total of 8 games will be played that week.
-The first game will be played on Tuesday night
-The second game will be played on Wednesday night
-The third game will be played on Thursday night
-The fourth and fifth games will be played on Friday at 5:30 and 9:00
-The sixth, seventh, and eighth games will be played on Saturday at 12:00, 3:30, and 7:30

Quarter Finals

-The first game will be played on Thursday night
-The second game will be played on Friday night
-The third and fourth games will be played on Saturday at 3:30 and 7:30

Semi Finals

-Both games will be played on Saturday at 3:30 and 7:30

Finals

-The National Championship Game will be played the Saturday following the Semi Finals at 7:30

Wait!!

We have to move two of the quarter final games to the 10th week of regular season game in order to get primetime starts on ABC/ESPN.

Discussion

Item #1: With Graham Harrell, what would our record be right now?
11-1, maybe 12-0 if more ready because of better play overall.
Item #2: Top 5 surprises this year (in the whole NCAA)
1. OU decline
                 2. Kansas struggles and problems
                 3. QB roundrobbin at Tech
                 4. USC decline
                 5. Cincy rise

Item #3: Do you think we should have a playoff? Why or why not?
Yes. BCS is restrictive, unfair to all, always agumentive.
Playoff guarantees final winner is champ.

Item #4: If you think we should have a playoff, what format would you choose (be creative)? If you think we should stick with the BCS would you make any modifications?
Limit regular season to 10 games only.
Include only all teams with 4 or less losses.
                          It’s postseason-make it count as a reward.
Give 1st round bye to undefeated teams.
First round held at home field of teams with least losses.
Use bowls as playoff sites second round onward, with championship
held at rotating site out of six locations.

Item #5: Bowl predictions (I think we should have a DTN Bowl Pick ’Em)
I like a DTN vote in a “Bowl Pick ’em” scenario, say by next Wednesday,
                          before the bowls begin.
