Small City High School Football

Since there is no Tech games for a while I thought ya'll might enjoy these clips

Star-divide

I am an Abilene homer, so forgive me. Those of you who are from small Texas towns understand the cultural importance of high school football. ( I am the first to admit that it is way over glorified and in the long run not that important but to ignore it would be a mistake).

This is the Abilene High game from last week, you will get to see the SIMS, Ronell and Hershel, work over Arlington Bowie. Unfortunately you do not get to hear Al Picket do the color call, he is a gem. Chuck Statler is doing the play by play, if you met this guy in a Russian Airport you would know he was from Abilene as soon as he opened his mouth. It amazes me the amount of research these two guys do, they know the history of the opposing team, all their players names and stats. FSSW broadcast teams could learn from these two. The Dirty Bird is AHS's version of the wild cat, they borrowed the name from the Falcons.

AHS wlll be playing Klein in Waco this Saturday in the 5A state simifimals.

This is the Abilene Wylie game against Lucas Lovejoy. While not as perfectly played as the AHS game Wylie's final drive is as good as it gets in HS Football. The Radio Broadcast team is not nearly polished as the AHS guys but they are enthusiastic, and I have to admit they are doing their best.. Also they do not mention Case Keenum even once during this clip which is some kind of record. Wylie will be playing this Saturday against Gilmer at SMU Floyd Casey Stadium for the 3A State Championship.

You beat me to it

I’m from a town of 2,000 an hour away fron Abilene, we drove to Abilene to eat at chain restaurants, shop at the mall, or even to see a freaking movie. They’re stinkin’ 5A. I DREAMED of growing up and living in a town the size of Abilene. I remember thinking, those people can just go to the mall when ever they want, see a movie whenever they want, WOW. just drive 5 minutes to ANYTHING! Now I live in a metro area of 6.5 MILLION and aside from eating out nightly, I don’t take advantage of anything a city offers (except paying clients).

I drove 20 minutes to a town with a pop of 832 every day just to go to a 2a school. I used to wish I had more around there to do,but looking back I wouldnt trade it. Nothing like seeing an entire school start foaming at the mouth to go muddin after a rain haha.

City, Small City , Big Town, Small Town, Town, Spot in the road..... all beat Big City

Abilene despite a pop. of just over 100,000 still has the community feel that a small town has.
It is kind of hard to explain but when you travel to Lubbock from Abilene you know that you are in a City. Here is an example. Last night HEB put on its Feast of Sharing (a free ham dinner to every one who comes) in the other cities HEB does this it is hard to get enough volunteers to make it happen. In Abilene we have to put a limit on volunteers (600) and will have them months before the event.

Wylie wanted to play in Waco but Gilmer would not have it, because they knew the AHS fans would come to the game also. Figure at least 10,000 totally rabid fans along with several thousand more t-shirt fans.

That’s one of the main reasons I came to Tech, I liked how it still had sort of a small town feel even though its pretty big.

Any TTU recruits?

Any potential TTU recruits on either squad? Always pull for Abilene teams – worked for both Warren & Sanderford (sp?) several times over the past 20 years – great coaches to work for as an official. Always have top shelf programs! Hope both can pull it off and bring some more Gold Balls back West Texas way!!

Not many top D-I guys here this year

The Sims are both Jr.s Herschel has the look of a TT running back, it will be interesting to see how he develops over the next year. Safety Karsten Goodman has potential (6-2 200lb) and several of the defense guys are Steven F. Austin sized school prospects.
For You displaced Abilene Cooper guys the story is the same, David Damian, OL, 6-5, 290 should get some looks from D-I schools, while QB Ryan Heslep, 6-foot-1 190-pound has the drive (fire and passion) to play D-I but is most likely a D-II or D-III guy.

Wylie has plenty of D-II and D-III guys, and some kids that might make it as a walk on in D-I.

Thanks for the run down

I don’t get much AHS or Cooper info in Central Texas and don’t get on the Reporter News site as much as I should. Even without much D-1 talent, AHS looks to be a formitable team.
Great to see these programs continue to make long runs in to the playoffs.

If you think AHS is good...

Just think of how good Cooper would be today if they wouldn’t have split the boundaries up back in the 90’s. Cooper had nearly a decade of competitive runs deep into the playoffs under Randy Allen (now at Highland Park) but when politics and people get involved most good things come to an end. Wouldn’t be a stretch to think Abilene may have more state titles than they do today had they left the schools alone.

+1

Cooper grad. I hate Abilene High! Well, I used to back about 15 years ago. Now I pull for both schools. Hope they win this weekend. Somehow the hate has faded. :-)

Hate

Hasn’t faded for me yet. Maybe one day but being in school at Cooper during all that left an impression on me for years. The debacle of stealing a certain running back from the Cooper district the same year and putting his family in a house on the North side didn’t help the matter much either. He ended up at OU on scholarship…which he blew. The discipline that kid would have gained from Coach Allen would have better prepared him for the big stage in my opinion. Sour taste still in my mouth.

Abilen is like most towns

about 25 funerals would really improve the place.

Wow!

I’d prefer our aholes in Plano just move to Ft. Worth. Of course that’d have to include me :(

Don’t bring Fort Worth into this. Life’s too short to live in Dallas or anywhere East of 820. :)

It's interesting how people in Ft. Worth hate dallas so much

I love it over there, it’s just more peaceful on the West side of the metro, but I just can’t imagine not living in Collin County. I certainly wouldn’t want to live in Arlington or South Dallas, but Aledo or Benbrook has a nice feel to it.

I was in Mesquite and Garland for a few years.

I prefer Ft. Worth……

Holy crap

Is it just me or is everyone else amazed how big these players are compared to 80’s and early 90’s???

by imisswesttexas on Dec 9, 2009 8:58 AM CST reply actions

A couple of us were talking about that the other day, except we were comparing today’s to the teams of the 60’s and 70’s. Most of the squad was under 200 lbs back then, linemen included.

by TechFirst on Dec 9, 2009 9:04 AM CST up reply actions

Agree!

Totally agree – living with it in my own home – I was about 5’2", 130 or so in 8th grade – my son (the next Wes Welker for Tech – arrives on campus 2014) is 5’ 10" – 155 or so and is almost as strong as I am. The crazy thing is he’s not the tallest, fastest, or biggest player on his team! I also played lineman at that size – he plays slot receiver – go figure!!

I can remember playing HS football senior year '89

We played Jim Ned, which is Tuscola just outside Abilene. We ate at the same steakhouse after the game as the mighty Permian team that night and as they walked in, I couldn’t believe that I was darn near bigger than anyone on their team. (Me at 17 equalled 6’ 2", 190) I could have been a guard for their team and I was a TE/OLB for my little 2A, now 1A team. I, at the time thought that those 5A teams must have had montsers, but turns out mostly they just have more kids to chose from. When I taught at 3A Commerce, we were a state power and I finally learned that it’s tradition, scheme, quickness that wins in Texas HS ball. aside from one DE that ended up playing 3 years for Dallas Cowboys, I was bigger than anyone on that team. What I truly love about HS ball it that a quick, fast little 5’9" QB can terrorize the best of defenses. The Wes Welker type ankle breaker dude can look like a man among boys out there cause there aint no Champ Baily on Defense that can shut him down running off the corner. Love HS ball.

great story

I played that Permian team in ’89. They must have just come to the steak house after kicking our asses at Shotwell. Really no one on their team was big, literally no one. But they were quick little dudes on the OL and DL and they were tough. No fear at all and they killed us. So they must have been in a pretty good mood. LOL

Abeline has NO CHANCE AGAINST KLEIN!!!!!

Maybe its because I graduated from KHS in 2000, but its my opinion that Klein will emerge from this game victorious! lol, its just crazy to see my old school this far in the playoffs, we have been horrible for years.

by Vassago77379 on Dec 9, 2009 10:12 AM CST reply actions

They may be good

But Klein plays in one of the hardest districts and has experience playing these kinds of games… It will be a good one for sure.

That’s what Cedar Park said, too.

by tturef on Dec 9, 2009 7:30 PM CST up reply actions

ooooh!

I follow them on the Reporter News and feel like I have a little connection because my Mom graduated AHS back in 1953. I have a little home on my family farm out there in BFE and get their local news when I go out there and play rancher/handyman so I watch the local sports. I have to go to Abilene for building and fence supplies, etc… Anyway, I really like pulling for them, but I honestly don’t know what the competition is like down there in Houston.

by Plano Jeff on Dec 10, 2009 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

I’ve been going around the different high schools in the austin area: high, westlake, stony point, etc. Haven’t gotten a chance to go to a lake travis game, but I’ll be sure to go to one next season.

I am always a little amazed because the quality of the product might be better here, but the crowd is a whole lot less electric than it is down in the rio grande valley where i grew up on high school football (every friday night from age 4 to 18).

by kayakyakr on Dec 9, 2009 12:56 PM CST reply actions

Same here

For a few years recently, I was an amateur ‘sports photographer’, i.e. stringer, at football games for a couple of local papers. No experience, just a really good camera and a fondness for HS football. Many of my games were in the Dallas area and the crowds and atmosphere in the big city are nothing compared to the ‘small towns’, especially those in West Texas where I’m from. I can’t imagine a Dallas TV station pre-empting a MLB pennant game for a HS football game like they did in Midland for a Lee-Permian game a few years back. And that was a regular season game.

Man, I’d sure like to take pictures at Tech games. I’d give away the pictures and even buy my own tickets.

My younger cousin is a senior OL for AHS, so I’m really glad to see them doing well in the playoffs.

by freakinout on Dec 9, 2009 1:57 PM CST reply actions

Speaking of high school playoffs...

We’ve been watching our Pearland Dawson team advance in the 4A playoffs. They’ll be taking on undefeated Lake Travis at Kyle Field on Saturday in the semis. They knocked off Friendswood (where I went to school and also home to Jacob Karim) last week.

What’s amazing is this is only the school’s 2nd year of varsity football and their first senior class. They are undersized but are scrappy, fast, disciplined and creative. It’s been a joy to watch.

There’s nothing like playoff football when there is a nip in the air and and every game is do or die for a school and the whole city that supports them. The NCAA doesn’t know what they are missing.

by natkcole on Dec 9, 2009 2:35 PM CST reply actions

100% agree

I’ve heard the arguement that fans of the teams couldn’t possibly travel to all the games if there were a playoff. I think it is bogus.

First, you’d have plenty of well funded fans go to every game. But beyond that, there is a huge amount of college football fans who would buy tickets to games regardless of the teams involved. I’m willing to bet every game would sell out in an 8 team playoff. Finally, when I was in school, we’d roadtrip ANYWHERE. So plenty of student involvement as well.

by imisswesttexas on Dec 10, 2009 8:46 AM CST up reply actions

I usually think it's stupid for Congress to get involved in epherial crap like this

But I’d love for them to focus on this like they did steroids in MLB. Plus it would distract them from finding creative ways of taxing me out of existence with the things they’re proposing presently.
