Post Game Thoughts :: Texas Tech 80, TCU 70

SBN Box Score ::
FoxSports Box Score

The Result :: Workman Like: Maybe this is the sign of a pretty good team. Texas Tech was down by 14 at one point down by 5 at the start of the second half. The Red Raiders ended up holding TCU to 29 points in the second half, while scoring 44. I wish I could find some splits between the first and second halves, but I'd be willing to bet that TCU probably shot lights out in the fist, and the second half was all about the Texas Tech defense.

Follow me after the jump for storylines, stats and some video highlights of the game.

Star-divide

The Storylines ::

Roberts = Rebounding Machine: It was simply unbelievable to see PF D`Walyn Roberts with 19 rebounds. Simply an amazing total, but even better was that of those 19 boards, 9 were offensive. Roberts had a spectacular dunk (see the video highlights below), but it's nice to see Roberts get recognized for his workman like effort for this team.

Solid Bench: Remember when we were all wondering whether or not the JUCO's would make an impact. Well, I cannot say that we should all be sold, but the 3 JUCO's, SF Theron Jenkins, SG David Tairu and SF Brad Reese, combined for 27 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. That was your bench for last night (I'm curious as to why Nick Okorie only got 4 minutes last night. Anyone?) and outscored TCU's bench by 7. The additional depth that Pat Knight has on board is really something, and the 3 JUCO's are more than capable of making significant contributions this year.

Leaders Lead: PG John Roberson's good shooting continued last night, and led the team in scoring with 21 points on 7-11 from the field. Not only that, and I'm starting to think he turned the corner, is that Roberson had 10 assists and only 4 turnovers for the night. SF Mike Singletary also finished with 17 points, 5 boards, 2 assists and 2 turnovers. Singletary also had a good shooting night, 7-13, and only 2 turnovers while playing 34 minutes. These two are the leaders of the team, along with Roberts and it's nice to see these juniors lead this team moving forward.

Player Impact, Game Flow and Four Factors: I love these graphs from StatSheet and I hope you do too:

The Offensive MVP :: PG John Roberson: This has to be Roberson for the second time in a row. Again, 21 points, 10 assists and only 4 turnovers, while playing 40 minutes. There's something to this team shooting 52.5% for the game and Roberson having 10 assists and shooting well to boot.

The Defensive MVP :: PF D`Walyn Roberts: Another repeat MVP, Roberts work on the board was maybe the difference in the game as Texas Tech out-rebounded TCU by 15 (45 to 30).

GreAt to see

Roberson maturing…..followed the kid since senior year at Plano and my son met him at camp this summer. This is what I had hoped for for all 3 recruits that year.

I said before the Washington game...

D’Walyn Roberts is the best player on this team. To wit:

He has a substantial lead over all other players on the team in Points Per Shot with 1.73, making him the most efficient offensive shooter on our team (helped in large part because he leads the team in FG% and is 2nd in FT%). He leads the team in rebounds by a full 1.5 a game after last night’s incredible performance. His A/T ratio is 3rd on the team, behind only Roberson and Brad Reese, making him one of the most efficient at getting the ball to the right player without turning it over. He is the only player with significant playing time that is averaging less than one turnover a game, and his average turnover once every only 32.25 minutes leads the team (by a lot – Roberson is turning it over every 15 minutes about, and only Lew is lower, but with few enough minutes to discount) making him one of the safest players on the court with the ball. He’s rarely in foul trouble, leads the team in blocks, and is 4th in ppg.

I think he’s the most complete player we’ve had in years.

Go register. Or else.

I’m just now starting to get to where I can understand all the stuff you just said… But this makes me happy

9 wins

I figure that is about half of what we need to punch a ticket to the dance. Our RPI is not that great (44) because we only have 1 quality win, but, with the exception of Stanford and McNeese, the schedule gets tougher from here on out. Witchita St and New Mexico will really test us away, and UTEP at home won’t be a cake walk. And then we start conference play…

Tech’s RPI is 15.

Yes, I am on board with Roberson showing his game at point guard. I am sure part of it is maturity and I believe part of it is having good players around him to make a better team. As noted earlier, an assist is not an assist unless it is converted.

I am especially happy for Roberts this season, he game is coming to maturity as well…I think we are going to be happily talking about him a lot this season.

I must make a point to congratulate Coach Pat for the good JC recruiting, the three named above are making solid early impact, especially Tairu.

I think there is another level of learning by looking at the stats on a minutes played basis.

They did

yes Seth TCU did shoot lights out in the first half and it seemed like Tech missed about 10 free throws. They were extremely agressive to end the first half and continued going to the basket and rebounding the hell out of the ball in the second.

Tech alums showed up REAL WELL last night, crowd noise was easily favored by Tech fans.

One thing that is cool to see in person is just how long our players are and can I just tell you how great it is to see ATHLETES out there!

athletic dept

I think this is testiment of how the University and Athl. Dept. has grown in the past couple years. It was always a catch 22 fan support and building great teams. You can’t build without support, and without building they had nothing worth supporting. Now, we have a VERY competitive Athl Dept as a whole and the growth has no limits. Long Story Short: Continue to support and show up – WREK ’EM TECH!!!

How true concerning the Athletic Dept

And for those who have short memories, the AD at Tech is Gerald Myers. The same person many have been lambasting since last year. And the same person I have asked those many to give credit due him for the improvements made over the years to reach where Tech is right now. On the verge of becoming a true Tier-I Athletic dept along with the Academia. I love it when a plan comes together, don’t you?

Holiday games

Lubbock locals really really need to show up to support this team on their games over the holiday break, the students simply will not be in town the next month. Athletic Dept may need to make some special ticket deals for these games to encourage attendance. And btw… with some people disagreeing with the JUCO recruits, I think its safe to say that as long as Southplains is winning JUCO national championships, we should probably keep an eye out to recruit their players.

by RdrPwr on Dec 9, 2009 1:37 PM CST reply actions

Students can “donate” their admission to all the games over the break (men’s and women’s) and they go to Lubbock-area kids, I believe. I already did it.

im going to have to facebook this link tomorrow when people will see it. This needs to be more well known. Of course I doubt kids will heckle opposing players too much. Tech may have class over the break! haha
