Myles Wade still considering UW?
According to this story, Wade is still committed to Tech, but took a nice trip to Washington and apparently fell in love with the campus and was told by advisors that he could be a semester ahead with his college credits.

I don't know why this worries me, but it does. I know Washington was 0-12 last year, but they have a new coach from the mighty USC and Seattle has something that Lubbock doesn't, nice scenery and the color green and this refreshing thing called water. Plus it's a lot closer to his home and the article said the coaches were trying to make him think that UW is an Ivy League school on the West Coast. Don't know about that, but a school has to sell themselves, right?
I just hope he does the right thing and look at how Tech's program is already on the right track, unlike the rebuilding process Washington will be going through for the next few years. Also, if the spotlight is important to him, there is definitely more potential at Tech after our stellar season than the mockery that is happening up there. Last, if education really matters to him, all I have to say is 79%. I found some numbers and Wahsington was 64%. That is a big difference considering how many guys are on a football team.
But I guess all we can really do is wait and see over the next few days.

Oh, the 79% and 64% are graduation rate comparisons, in case you didn’t know what I was talking about.

Washington is a great public school…ranks very highly in most categories (#41 in the US News Rankings). Tech doesn’t get ranked at all. We’re Teir III, they are Teir I.

New thinking
If and when the oldsters finally move out of place, the academics at Tech will finally be rated correctly, within the top 30-40 of the country. They have really upped the anti on academics and actual abilities of graduating students are equal to those at Ut, OU, USC, Cal and so on. It is really frustrating to see Tech being snubbed by those “in the know”. They obviously aren’t. And just what are THEIR prerequisites for being academically ranked, anyway? AND where did THEY graduate from and why are their rankings “IT”? Just a thought.

I wasn’t saying Washington isn’t a good school, it just isn’t the Ivy League. In terms of prestige, Washington may be better than Tech, but it is probably closer to Tech (being a state funded public school) than to Harvard. I don’t have any basis for this other than common perception. If I did some research I could probably learn a thing or two, though.
But the graduation rate many times does not have anything to do with the quality of institution anyway. Perfect example is UT. Highly ranked school but their football grad rate is under 50%. Football players seem to be on a different level than normal students with most guy’s first (and only) priority being football (and yes I konw there are plenty of exceptions).
I don’t want to knock this Myles Wade kid because he looks like a really great kid who has been through a lot and has probably matured since coming out of high school, but usually when kids don’t qualify for college the first time due to deficiencies in grades and/or credits, they could care less about the quality and prestige of their education.
That is why I think the graduation rate is so important for football. Some places kids go to play football. When that is over, they leave, degree or not. At Tech, 4 out of 5 kids leave with a degree, which makes them a more productive person since 95% (just a guess) of athletes will have to find a job other than being an athlete. That is a very important statistic for these guys to understand.

Tech will be fine I think
I think we’ll be alright. I know he only had a solid verbal to us but that says a lot. Washington is a great school in a great location but I think we’ll be just fine. We had a good talk with him when the coaches visited with him and there’s no doubt that we made a strong pitch to him about the fact that he would have a better chance of fulfilling his career at Tech and graduating with a great degree from Tech than he would’ve at Washington.
He’ll make the right choice and go with us. Have no fear.

Don't forget
that Wade’s mother passed away last year (I think) and I could understand how he might want to stay closer to home.
With that being said, no one in the country will love-you-up like Ruffin McNeill. He’ll be there for you, I’m absolutely sure of that.
Go Raiders . . .
