The Saga of Mike Leach and Texas Tech: Five Days Away

Kent Hance Explains It To Leach

Hat-tip to Hyatt, LAJ's Don Williams updaates his story from Monday regarding Leach's agents sending emails to the Texas Tech Board of Regents without copying AD Myers and Chancellor Hance until 90 minutes later. Apparently Kent Hance has some advice for the Captain (emphasis mine):

"The Board of Regents in December, again in January and again last week assured us they have not talked to Leach or his agents. (The agents) e-mail that says (they are) trying to clear this up is just false," said Hance.

"The truth of the matter is they didn’t get everything they wanted from Gerald Myers and asked to speak to me . They didn’t get everything they wanted from me and then went to (President) Guy Bailey. Then they contacted the board and since they couldn’t get it from the board they decided to play this out in the press. It’s sad that he has these type of people representing him. Mike is a better man," said Hance.

"For Texas Tech and Mike Leach’s sake he needs to sign the contract and get back to coaching football," said Hance.

Let's go ahead and file this away under, "Reasons Why A Deal Won't Get Done."

Join me after the jump for additional thoughts on how screwed up the situation has become.

Star-divide

Leverage

So everyone asks who has leverage?

Ummm, how about no one.

I mentioned it yesterday morning, but if a deal isn't brokered by Tuesday, then no one has leverage. Leach loses quite a bit of credit with potential employers as a coach who is difficult to deal with and Myers and Hance look like they can't handle big-time negotiations with a big-time coach. Neither party can figure out that they both lose and this is a game of chicken where no one wins.

Just Lock Them In a Room

That's not going to happen either. The relationship between Leach and Myers is so fractured I can't see much give either way.  Granted, a counter-offer was made last night by Leach's agents, but we have no idea if it's a good faith effort and whether or not Myers and Hance have so dug in their heels about the last offer being "The Last Offer". Leach has been adamant about letting his agents do the talking and there's no doubt that Leach, being an attorney, is not going to start negotiating now with Myers and Hance.

Either IMG and the Texas Tech administration figure it out, which I doubt will happen, or a deal doesn't get done.

Eleventh Hour Clauses

So Myers and Hance added clauses to Leach's contract and they both say that the part of the reason is that they wanted some loyalty from Leach. Of course, IMG has refuted those claims (that Leach isn't loyal to Texas Tech), but at this point, this is all a spin . . . by both sides.

What I'm wondering is if there was a reason why Myers and Hance included those four provisions so late in the game?

For Myers, I think there absolutely was a method behind these negotiations. I think this is all part of Myers' test and Myers knows that Leach won't accept these provisions.  This all sounds so devious.

Would it surprise anyone if this was Myers way of getting rid of Leach and still looking incredibly loyal to Texas Tech and the University? I do want to be clear, I do think that Myers believes that he's doing what's in the best interest in the University, but I'm thinking that not everyone here at DTN shares that opinion of Myers.

February 17, 2009

So we have a deadline.

And this isn't one of those deadlines, like when your old lady tells you to get something done and you put it off for another day because you had to change the oil in the lawn mower and that's really time consuming, like all afternoon time consuming.

This is an absolute deadline.

Because the deadline was "leaked" to the public, I truly believe that this is a firm deadline and something will happen on February 18, 2009 if the two sides can't come to an agreement.

February 18, 2009

Kent Hance and Gerald Myers have a plan. I'm not sure what it is, but the truth of the matter is that Hance, Myers and Texas Tech have a plan and I would be surprised if something doesn't happen on February 18, 2009.

I do want to be clear, again, that I think Mike Leach is the best coach for Texas Tech. I will feel like I will have lost an arm, or some other important appendage if Leach isn't Texas Tech's coach next week.

And hiring a new head coach on the eighteenth of February if the two parties cannot agree must happen for a couple of reasons:

  • If a new coach isn't hired then recruiting is going to teh sux. Junior Day is right around the corner and if there isn't a head coach in place that kids know is going to be in Lubbock for at the very least five years, then it's not going to be pretty.  This alone could set back the program for a number of years, just ask the basketball program about getting in good players.
  • You've got to sell season tickets, and there's no way that Texas Tech is going to be able to season tickets if there's a coach in flux. It's not the guys who are renewing that I'm worried about, it's the new guy that's been on the fence about buying a ticket. No fan wants to buy a ticket to uncomfortableness. If Leach stays, it's going to be like having to meet your girlfriend's dad for the first time and trying to start a reasonably intelligent conversation to pass the time . . . for an entire season.

Option #1: Defensive Coordinator:  This is all pure speculation, so take it with a grain of salt. The easiest path is to promote Ruffin McNeill to interim head coach. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see him get the job and it would make the transition with players relatively easy. I think he's close to quite a few players, but the problem with that plan is that there's really not anyone to run the offense because Leach ran the offense (it's called job security). I'm not a fan of this option because although I think McNeill is improving, he doesn't strike me as head coaching material. The other candidate that I've thought would be an interesting match is Florida's Charlie Strong, but I think it would be difficult for Strong to come in, establish his system, hire a staff and rally a fanbase. That would be tough for a first-time head coach.

Option #2: Offensive Coordinator: I'm not sure that I'm a big fan of this option, but Arizona's Sonny Dykes could come back home to Lubbock. The problem with this is that this probably means that McNeill doesn't stick around, which puts your defense in the same hole if McNeill is hired. The same thing that applies to Strong applies to Dykes in that being a first-time head coach is going to be tough.

Option #3: Current Head Coach: Logically, I think Baylor's Art Briles makes some sense, but I can't envision many head coaches leave this late in the game. It's crazy to think that a head coach would leave, and I know that money can change someone's mind relatively quickly, but it seems that it would take a huge effort to lure a current heach coach to Lubbock. Other options might be Utah's Kyle Whittingham, but again, I think he'd really have to be money-whipped to leave Utah. I'm sure there are other candidates (J. Jones, Bailiff, Patterson, etc.) out there, but it's just so damned late and the same thought for me applies with these guys too.

Just Get Along

At the end of normal contract negotiations, there's usually a press conference where the AD and the newly re-signed head coach pose for pictures and shaking hands. That's probably not going to happen here. But that doesn't mean that the absolute best thing for everyone is to just make it work. I hate all of the options outlined above for a new head coach. There's something missing from each and every one of those options has negatives, but then again, so does re-signing Leach.

My advise to Leach

Roll the dice son, roll the dice!

Meyers and Tech rolled the dice so to speak when they were approached last April for a new contract and said they would want to wait until the end of the season to see how things played out. Who knows what their reasoning was in waiting. But here we are stuck without an agreement.

Coach Leach needs to say “no” to their new contract proposal and do what he does best, which is install a new quarterback to run his prolific offense and coach football. He still has two years remaining on his current contract. What is Meyers and Tech going to do? Fire him? I don’t think so! His best bet is to have another great year and to coach his team to at another one loss regular season. And if he were to beat Texas in the early September game and OU when they come to Lubbock, well he would have Meyers and Hance by the gonads. Maybe then “Texas Tech University” would find in their best interest to make Leach an offer he wouldn’t refuse.

Roll the dice son, roll the dice!

Tech football

is dead, as of the 18th, for some time to come. Regardless of what transpires, the relationships of all concerned have digressed, if not from where it originally was for the concerned parties, then in the eyes of the fans and on the national football scene. That includes ALL possibilities concerning future recruiting efforts. Whether Leach stays or goes, Tech will take a hit because of this horror show.

Greed. It kills a lot of relationships, and this is one of those times, sad to say. I will root for whomever leads this team, but will be forever hatefull of what has gone on this past year. Tech officials-all of them-and Leach’s crowd have dragged the university through the mud, slime and beer and I don’t think ANY fan is happy about it, especially those holding or desiring to hold season tickets. When one invests in something, one expects and anticipates certain positive action to warrent that investment, whether that investment is money, time, or affection. This will be a black eye for Tech to bare for years to come, and it is all because of the egos and greed of those involved.

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME.

I'm not sure I would go that far

If an extension is signed, most of this will be forgotten by the time talk of another extension rolls around. I disagree with Seth that they will take any drastic actions (fire) Leach on the 18th if he does not sign. I think they rescend the offer and discontinue negotiations until the end of next season. It will hurt the 2010 recruiting class. A few from the 2009 class may transfer if Leach does leave. Depending on who they get after next season will determine the long term effects.

Something tells me they will strike a deal sooner or later. That Leach and his agents are still trying to work something out tells me he hasn’t given up on Tech. The question is has Tech given up on him?

I do think that, even if they do come to terms, the relationship may be damaged to the point that Mike Leach will be looking seriously and not just flirting with other schools within 3 years. Unless tech comes back with another offer as soon as Myers retires as an act of good will.

What a mess

I just renewed my season ticket s and for what? A staffing nightmare that will eventually lead to unhappy and unproductive players. All this contract crap came way too late and the administration is to balme for that delay. Now wonder we got killed by OU and Ole Miss at the conclusion of the season. I can’t imagine what these players and new recruits are feeling lately. Probably betrade and lost to say the least. Here are the choices bonesheads 1. Sign him(perfer) 2. Fire him 3. Do nothing – and be the laughing stack of next season especially if Mike wins big and leaves. I think between Leach, Hance, Myers and agents it’s all about “mines bigger than yours” now.

Such lack of professionalism and immaturity that won’t do any of them any good moving forward.

Leverage

I think I am about to cancel my season tickets. Leach can leave on the 18th with a graceful resignation and go make good money with ESPN or CBS doing pregame and halftime shows. We all know what a great interview he is. Then in a few years he will be coaching somewhere else. Although, there is blame to go around on both sides, the ex basketball coach as AD in a football world just doesn’t work. Myers must go. And when it all goes down, who is going to come here. Brile’s will stay at Baylor, he has been there only one year and he makes almost as much as Leach would in in the new contract, and he has a great AD now. It is now becoming a step down to come to Tech from Baylor, and could even be step down to come from TCU, Houston, or any other BCS school. I see the 80’s all over again, losing seasons and no bowls.

What a total and complete disaster!

This kind of bush league negotiating tactics will stain Tech’s image for years. They thought they were being so freaking smart by waiting until after the season and now look at them…..idiots! Meyers and Hance should follow Leach out the door if this happens.

Congratulations Mr Myers and Mr. Hance we are now the Iowa State of the South Division of the Big 12…….

Excuse me…I think I am going to be sick!

I'm done contributing or buying tickets if Leach is run off

I’ve given my last dime to the Tech Athletic Dept if Myers succeeds in running Leach off. This is so ridiculous. What part of an 11 win season do Hance and Myers not like? Too much national media exposure? Then they need to take their act to Lubbock Christian College.

Ugh!

If Leach coaches next year (and is successful at Tech) or whether he leaves after Feb. 18th, he still has a future as a successful coach in what he has done at Tech.

Gerald Myers has no future only a well-deserved retirement. For me, the sooner, the better.

Texas Tech does not come off smelling like a rose in their technique of negotiating with their best football coach ever. If Leach leaves, they’ll be back to picking up 3rd rate coaches because who would want to deal with Myers and company but a 3rd rate coach?

If have a very bad feeling about this whole fiasco and I say that with some degree of respect for Kent Hance.

This is just my opinion

and as usual I have nothing to back this up BUT…..

Do you guys thinks that Meyers just has a big head due to him bringing in Bobby Knight and our recent national exposure?

Him and Hance seem awfully smug and full of themselves in their comments…

Like I said I don’t have anything specific to back that up but just my theory

by WALKERMAN on Feb 12, 2009 11:59 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Look at the Basketball program now though total crap because Knight could not and would not recruit. I have delt with Myers when I was at Tech and he is an asshole big time. Hance is a pretty cool dude, but not as cool as Smith or Harragan. Harragan was one tight dude to work with.

I don't know

I don’t know any specifics, but if Myers is the prime mover in formulating Tech’s offers to Leach, then I think Myers is way over his head and out of his league in dealing with Leach and Company. From my standpoint, the punitive aspects of the 4 debated revisions to Leach’s contract were poorly thought out by whomever and in the end, whichever way this goes if Leach’s new contract is unsigned, Tech is the loser and as I said up above, Leach will move on to greener pastures. That is, of course, unless Lubbock has a lot more rainfall with which to water the campus.

Why???

…if your boss tells you that he can’t pay you any more than you are making and even though you have a few years on your contract feel free to find another job if they can pay you more…then you go to Washington to see if you can find a better job …and now your boss tells you that because you went to find another job without telling him he is upset and now in order to get another contract your boss is going to change the rules..
If this happened to you at YOUR JOB you would WALK if you has ANY self respect..and so would I!! WAKE UP PEOPLE THIS STINKS AND IT IS GOING TO BLOW UP IN TECHS FACE UNLESS THEY CHANGE THIER STANCE FAST..

The Tech administration is acting like people outside of Texas see Tech, as backward rednecks…The “You are only as big as you see yourself” paradigm that most winning programs have is something that has been missing at Tech and as a result we have had a hard time competing on a national scale… and now we have a coach that put us at #2 in the country at one point last year and set a record at 11-2 and we treat him like this so we can back a out of touch “Good ole boy” like Myers!!! ….you are what you see yourself and to change that we must change ALL those who are acting like those outside of Texas see us, and if don’t REMOVE Myers that won’t change!!!
Remember a small teaching collage in a city very much like Lubbock hired a new coach and stuck with him and look what Florida State got in return!!!

Don't worry be happy

The deadline is meaningless, all it states is that this contract proposal is off the table.
A new one could be floated the next day.

This is all taking place in Lubbock.
The only person in the world outside of Lubbock that cares about Lubbock happenings is George H. Bush, and he is an Aggie.

I hope Leach does not leave but if he does Hance and Meyers already have a replacement in waiting. I may not like either one of them but I know that they are not so stupid to not have that card up their sleeve.

Hank Hill once stated that he thought that tattoos and body piercing were a good thing because it made it easy to spot people who were stupid enough to do such a thing.
A lot of these men have been forced to show their dark sides.
Bigger fish than us in the TECH pond will take notice.

I am starting to think that Meyers just does not like Mormons, maybe he had kin at the Mountain Meadows Massacre.

VIVA LA FIGA!
