Myers Statement on Leach Contract

Wow...I know we don't want to copy content, but I couldn't resist.

Texas Tech Athletics Director Gerald Myers released this statement regarding Coach Mike Leach's contract:

“This ‘so called’ proposal is simply an offer for us to guarantee that Coach Leach could never be fired.  It would cost us a maximum of $4.4 MILLION if we wanted to change coaches in the first year. It would cost Texas Tech millions in subsequent years of his five year contract.

“If Leach left Tech he would only pay Tech $500,000. Our proposal is a fair offer of $12.7 million for five years.  Both Leach and Texas Tech would pay the same annually decreasing buyout figures. Leach’s agents’ proposal is not fair. We will not even respond to such a proposal.”

I hate that this has become such a pissing contest . My thought is that if the parties could not reach an agreement on extension/revised contract, fine. At that point Leach would just serve out the remainder of his contract and leave or leave for another job. But this process has sullied the names of everyone involved. Horrible.

I'm tired of talking about this crap

I’m sure everybody is with me on this one. What an embarassment to our school. I’m officially done posting about it until we get the final conclusion.

It sounds like it’s time for a break for all the parties. Just shelve the discussions until after spring ball or the summer and then circle back to see what cooler heads are thinking. A little distance by all parties involved may save this – and keep it out of the papers.

This sucks so much. I hate gerald myers, i think hes a complete moron. I know this is already a big deal in college football circles, but I haven’t seen any headlines on ESPN or anything….yet. Has anyone else seen any? When they start putting this on the frontpage of espn.com then we are truly going to be embarressed.

Seeing all that was said and went on, I finally broke. I have an opinion now and that is that Myers has less negotiating ability than a lab monkey.

It’s like he doesn’t even understand what contract negotiations mean. There was no reason for this statement to be made publicly.

by kayakyakr on Feb 13, 2009 1:30 PM CST reply actions

I can totally agree with that. Both sides look to be playing this in the court of public opinion – Tech maybe even more so. That’s not a great strategy.

Fire them all.

I am so dissapointed!

I hreally enjoyed watching the Red Raiders under coach Leach. He fielded an exciting football team and it was the greatest season ever this past year. I no longer believe Leach will stay on as football coach. Sadly, tomorrow I am going to return my season ticket renewals with a note expressing my disgust with this sorry affair.

by faunchin on Feb 13, 2009 2:09 PM CST reply actions

Leach still has two years left on the current deal and there are no openings for him to pursue at the moment. He’ll be here in 2009. We’ll end up with a new negotiation (or hopefully one that isn’t played out in public) and he’ll be here for a while. I’m convinced of that at this point.

Tech is really the only side with any leverage. They can always go hire some guy who is already working. Would not likely be a great hire, but we have the option. Leach, on the other hand, needs to wait until next year’s firings start. I’m quite sure no current decent D-I team will fire their coach to hire him this spring.

I am with you all.

This “negotiating?” has been one of the most attrocious things I think that has ever occurred at Texas Tech, especially with it being so publicly exposed. I am a long-time supporter of Texas Tech and feel Gerald Myers has been one of their finer AD’s. However, this fiasco has not been a good one, especially on his part. I understand the school wants the loyalty of the coach, but where were their loyalties when Leach was hired to replace a deposed Spike Dykes? Where were they when James Dickey was run out of town to make room for Robert Knight? If they want loyalty, then they must start showing some themselves. Noboby should have to inform a present employer if they have been offered a similar or better position elsewhere, in business or in sports. Those extra provisions are examples of insecurre people trying to verify their own existance in the system, not trying to keep a present coach from having a wandering eye. I have become a totally supportive fan of Mike Leach and whatever he decides to do is OK with me. Tech and, especially, Myers and Hance will just have to suffer the consequences, and those will hurt Tech much longer than anything they do will hurt Mike Leach. Now, I will continue to support Texas Tech athletics, but I hope Texas Tech University understands who was responsible for this rediculous mess to start with, and take appropriate action. That is the last about this I will write, as well, because I am just too weary of it to keep up this banter. Bye for now. When things clear up and the future is more visible, I will reemerge.

just for clarification

The IMG boys are amenable to notifying Tech of interview plans in the latest offer. All the other questionable provisions were excluded.

Well Said Tech92

Chances are that Leach will be here next season. He can not afford to quit and sit out the season or have a bad season and expect to find a job that pays what Tech pays. He won’t want to miss out on the big rivalry games in Dallas against Baylor. It won’t be so easy for him to land a quality job that has as little non-coaching responsibilities as he has at Tech and where his idiosyncrasies will be appreciated or tolerated. Remember, he has looked at a number of big schools that either were not interested or only mildly interested in him. We act as if he has been considered a serious candidate at all of the openings we hear is name associated with. That is not the case. Sure, Leach will be able to leave Tech at the end of next season, no problem, by accepting a lesser paying less prestigious job but he won’t do that. If we consider that Tech is a top 25 program, how many quality schools are there each year that have head coaching vacancies, are not scared by his demeanor and are willing to pay him more than Tech? Just a few and the competition will be stiff. Consider the Tennessee, Clemson and Auburn jobs and who filled them this year.

Gerald is an ass.....

And now that he has shown it by ‘rejecting’ the counter offer, Hance is to blame also. Gerald wouldn’t be acting like a douchebag if Hance didn’t give him the slack in his leash to do so. I am not to the point where I am going to stop discussing it, in fact I want to hear what I can do to let the friggin’ admin at Tech know how pissed I am.
Gerald is not the man to analyze the future of Pat and the men’s hoops team….he is too invested in Pat’s daddy. Gerald is not the guy to analyze and react to anything Tech Football, he has shown he has a hard on for Mike.
When you are not helpful for Men’s basketball and football, you need to get your ass out of Dodge. I don’t care if it looks like the reason he is gone is because of Mike’s agents……get over the ego trip and get the only thing/person that is standing in the way of getting this done out of the way. Does anyone doubt that this would get done ASAP if Gerald was out of the picture? Tick tock…..we are waiting.

I won’t try to defend Myers, but this negotiation isn’t taking place in a vacuum. Myers, Hance, a lawyer or two and likely many BOR members are privy to the communications, proposals and next steps. It’s not all on Myers, he’s just the voice since he’s the AD.

by Tech92 on Feb 13, 2009 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

Which is exactly....

Why I said that I was now holding Hance accountable for this as well. What did Gerald accomplish by officially rejecting this offer in such a public way? Shut the pie hole, and Hance is dead wrong for letting him do it.

Ok…I’m not going to post anymore till Feb. 17th—this is a joke on both sides. Leach won’t get any jobs after the ’09 season as he will post a sub-par season. Which top job is going to hand him a position after a mediocre season?? He will have no choice but to accept a job in a non-BCS program and win there to have him name mentioned again. Who would want to negotiate with he and his team? Someone wake me up when this is all over.

Let your voice be heard before it's too late

The biggest Red Raider Club booster is Jim Sowell:

Kent Hance’s e-mail address is easily guessed @ttu.edu.

Let these guys know how you feel about all this.

I just done get

why they can’t all agree on something. I wish Leach just wanted to stay here forever and accomplish what many people think is impossible at Texas Tech, and I wish the administration would cooperate.

by techtom4 on Feb 13, 2009 9:40 PM CST reply actions

that

should say “don’t” get

by techtom4 on Feb 13, 2009 9:40 PM CST reply actions

The most damaging part of all this is

the bad blood being generated between the two parties. You can play hardball in the negotiating room, but when it filters out into the public sphere, egos start getting bruised, and that sort of thing can’t be taken back. There’s no question that Leach will stick around for next year, and depending on how his annual job hunt goes he might even serve out the final year of his contract, but at this point how can he realistically be expected to sign a new contract given the way this round of negotiations has played out? People who respect each other do not behave this way in a professional setting, and a working relationship without respect is unattractive, to say the least. At this point I can’t help but feel like Tech’s administration should look forward to an inevitable hunt for a new coach, and should think very hard about how this fiasco will be viewed by potential hires.

Is the post screwing up for anyone else? I can’t read what it says because the sentences overlap one another.

by willthetechfan on Feb 14, 2009 12:11 AM CST reply actions

Huh, I can read it using firefox but not internet explorer. I suppose one more reason why open source is better. Anyway, Meyers is and idiot. "Leach’s agents’ proposal is not fair. We will not even respond to such a proposal." What the hell does he think was doing when he made this statement?

by willthetechfan on Feb 14, 2009 12:21 AM CST up reply actions

This is Sad

What makes me sad is that Myers and Hance have now started misdirecting blame, and pointing our eyes to the two clauses that can and should be negotiated.

The other two clauses are the real reasons Leach CANNOT sign the contract!

Buyouts and salaries and numbers can and should be worked through. For Myers to state that they cannot proves that they want Leach gone, at all costs. They are done with Leach and will not listen to reason.

We will lose the winning-est coach in our history for three reasons:

Back. Door. Politics.

by Pancho on Feb 15, 2009 11:22 AM CST reply actions

He’s almost the winningest coach in our history, but your point is well taken.
