I want to thank Chancellor Hance. With [out] his leadership I don't know that this contract would have gotten done and so I really appreciate his efforts in ultimately brining this whole thing all together. And I want to thank coach Myers for his help and support with regard to that and his leadership in the athletic department. Me and my family are thrilled to death that we're gonna be in Lubbock for another five years because it's become a part of our family.
The entire press conference transcript is at this link, but thought it was interesting that Leach thanked both Hance and Myers, although they were probably standing right next to each other . . . probably would have been a little awkward otherwise.

NO BUYOUT?????
How do you go from his current 500K overall buyout to the proposed 300K per year to no buyout whatsoever? I don’t get it, that was the one thing that I actually did want them to dig their heels in over. Good Lord.

Old School, really, Leach’s agents road blocked any face to face discussion between him and the administration the entire time. Agents normally handle negotiations without their client in the room so the client is not the bad guy. Right or not, I don’t think our administration works that way (I kind of appreciate that, to be honest). Once that barrier was removed, the rest was just agreeing to how to word things.
I’d give a lot of money to hear how Myers REALLY feels about Leach and the agreement. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear this agreement ruined his day. And I’m a relative Myers supporter.
The biggest lesson they will all learn is that you can’t play these things out publicly. Nobody ever comes out smelling sweet when that happens.
For the first time since Leach’s second or third season in LBK, I actually believe he wants to be at Tech for the long-term. He may have a dream job in mind out there, like most of us probably do, but I have a feeling it will be a while before we hear Leach’s name seriously linked to another job. His name may come up from boosters at a school with a need; he can’t control that. But I think he will give his IMG boys a nice little cease and desist order when it comes to offering his name up to schools with openings. And that is refreshing.
There is an easy way to answer this...
Buyout clause and termination clause are two sides of the same coin. The employer wants to protect themself (through the buyout clause) and the employee wants to protect themself (through the termination clause). The school gave on the buyout, from 500K→1.5M→0 and Leach gave on the termination clause from 40→16.
As a practical matter… why does anyone care what the buyout is? Will 1$ or 1.5M make a difference if a legitimate BCS school wants Leach? If some school is going to steal him away, it’s not going to matter that he has a 1.5M buyout clause. Rich Rodriguez found Michigan despite a 4M buyout clause. If a school rich enough to buy us out of a 12.7M contract decides Mike Leach is the guy… 1.5M is about as important as 0.0M.
What the school, smartly in my opinion, negotiated was a much smaller termination deal. So that although Leach can walk away from Tech cost-free, we’ve negotiated terms so that we can walk away from Leach relatively cost-free. His termination clause is low relative to other contracts. The 16% we owe him is substantially less than the 40% we owe him currently.

It is amazing
to see this happen so quickly when two level-headed people got together and amicably discussed the issues. A great amount of tribute must be given to Chancellor Hance and Mike Leach for doing this, although it actually should have been done last summer. I don’t care what the contract consists of. They agreed. It is none on my business exactly what is in the agreement, just that they are on the same page now. AND, all are convinced Leach will remain in Lubbock as the coach for many years. Isn’t that what he has been saying all along? Did no one listen? I know, I know. He has wandering eyes….what better to see how the rest of the world ticks. He is wanting to leave a legacy. Tech is that place. The future looks bright.

I'm going to miss this.....
Cat fights always end to soon.
All the hand wrenching and tearing of garments that took place on DTN. Man I tell you what, it was better than when my buddy the Bull Rider married a pretty little girl from Flushing Queens and her mom and aunts saw his hand tooled leather yamaka.
In the end it all worked out, to every ones satisfaction.
Now about Meyers and the evil agents from hell.
They did their jobs, plain and simple. The sit down between Leach and Hance was due to their hard work
VIVA LA FIGA!
One more thing...
Firing Meyer at this point would be like shooting your dog after he bites you mother-in-law.
Yea, he needs a good scolding, but you end up buying him a box milkbones when the wife ain’t around.
