There is absolutely no trust or good will between the parties at the moment. This is worse than I thought.

WOW
this is very embarassing to read and I cant believe Leach and his agents are being so immature about this contract. It seems more than fair to me, and while I love coach Leach, I wish that he was more loyal and am going to begin to accept that he may be gone very soon. The 4th clause is the only unreasonable one, though I’m not sure I fully understand how the other three operate. I agree with what many have said that leach did some of this to himself by always interviewing and denying that he is doing so. I really hope they can all agree on something and maybe somehow find a way to respect each other and get along, because the fact that just about anyone who wants to read these e-mails can is very embarassing and makes our school and our coach look bad.
Also,
the fact that Leach and his agents seem to think they are the shit now after one good year really upsets me. What happens if Tech goes 7-5 next year and loses their bowl game?? Is it likely? No. It is possible? Very. We could easily lose to OU, UT, OSU, NU, and UH who is a very good team with a great offense that has a lot of talent coming back next year, and its a road game that they will be pumped for. Tech basically gets SCREWED out of it;s investment if he has another average year next year. In my opinion, Leach and his agents are trying to discuss these contract negotiations as if they have routinely had 11 win seasons, when in reality this is the FIRST one. I think Leach is a good fit for Tech, but if this doesn’t get fixed soon I think he needs to go. This may set the football program back a bit, but Texas Tech University does not need this kind of drama, nor does it need to be controlled and operated by the damn football coach!
What’s hilarious to me is the fact that his sophomore level agent is trying to spin the buyout into a “$1.5mm” buyout when that couldn’t be further from the truth – unless Leach quits the day after he signs the deal.
What makes Leach and the agent’s look a bit worse is the fact that they buyout and guarantee’s are dollar for dollar at $300K per year remaining. Seems pretty equitable to me. They act like Leach is the only one taking a risk here. If Leach wants to stay at Tech, then there is almost no risk to signing this deal for him.
Exactyl!
They dont seem capable of realizing there is one VERY VERY VERY easy solution to all the things they have problems with in the contract…ALL LEACH HAS TO DO IS STAY AT TECH AND NOT LOOK AROUND!!!!!!! I guess that’s asking too much though, and its obviously WAAAYYY to unfair.
Thanks T-92 for the copies, they were really informative. ‘’BOTTOM LINE’‘.. Tech wants security and Leach will not commit to it. Originally, I could of lived with 2 and dropped 2 clauses, but after reading everything , I say keep all 4,with maybe a little tweak here or there, but I think Tech ought to hold its position. I sincerely think Tech is trying to keep Leach here[literally], and really want him to stay. I think this stand by Tech has somewhat stunned Leach and his agents. This to me is more than fair if you are committed to Tech…….. 12.7 mill plus incentives, damn! C’mon Leach
I think that this coming out publicly will hurt Leach in the public court than it will Tech. Seeing the facts and true figures about this, and how his agents failed miserably trying to spin the buyout numbers, it really paints the Leach camp in a lesser light than Tech. At least from my perspective. In the end, nobody will come out smelling like a rose.
But I promise you, the other schools out there who may be interested in Leach at some point see these documents and would likely feel the same as Tech does. The end run they made to the BOR was a massive can of fail.
Leach is, by all accounts, a good guy. But his agents have really miscalculated in dealing with Tech. Badly. Hance is anything but a country bumpkin and is every bit the intellectual heavyweight as the agents.
I want Leach to stay at Tech for a few reasons. But I also know that in this economy and the way things play out publicly with this kind of money, Leach and his crew are playing with fire in the court of public opinion. We have made a VERY fair offer financially. If Leach is serious about wanting to be at Tech for more than a season, then the only item that should cause him heartburn would be the fourth. The others wouldn’t really apply – unless his eye has started to wander again.
My fellow Red Raiders,
After reading this, I think 2009 will be our last with Captain Leach.
Either he will have a great season and jump ship to the first available team, or he will have a lousy season, Tech will offer much less next time and piss off Leach, and he will jump ship.
If I were Myers, I would get rid of the “rights to the Coach’s likeness etc.” clause. I would then say that we will concede and ask that Coach do the same. I might get rid of the firing-for-looking clause and just accept that I hired a prima donna for a coach and put up with his “will he/won’t he” stunts every year. I am getting the picture that Leach is not a good interviewer and his ego will hurt himself in the process. If I were Meyers, I would take that risk. If Tech made these changes in the proposal, we would really see if the compensation was a sticking point or not.
I don’t blame anyone for holding out for the best deal possible. But Leach’s leeches are hurting him in this process. I could see him holding out if he beat OU, Mizzu, and taken Tech to the NC. But losing the last 2 out of three in the manner in which Tech did, really hurt him and makes his hold out look silly. The OU and Ole Miss games, to me, looked more like the coaches didn’t prepare the kids well enough. I just can’t see how anyone could honestly be holding out for a larger increase after that.
He’s getting a raise, but he seems to be banking on one 11 win season. If he was coming off even two 11 win seasons in row, his attitude would be more understandable. I, too, doubt that 2009 will be as glorius with us losing key offensive players and OSU poised to play our 2008 season this year. Remember TU and NU will be gunning for us. We may get by OU, but we play BU there. Color me suprised if we win 3 of these 5 games this year ( I really hope I’m wrong and will take the smack down like a man if I am! I’m 40!). If Leach is gambling on another 11 win season, I hope he’s got a great “play” called on 4th down!

IN ANTICIPATION TO THIS
I think Hance and Meyers have had the coaching search engine going the last couple of months
The Goodwill well is poisoned
The whole contract situation has shown me one thing. Myers and Leach aren’t going to be able to coexist together after this current contract expires. I hate to see Leach leave but you can’t have a long term coach with “wandering eyes” and then have your agent try to cut the AD out of the contract negotiations.
Now for the scary stuff, remember finding a good coach isn’t as easy as you might think. The Horn suffered during the years of McWilliams and Mackovic until they hit on Mack Brown. Can you say the Aggies are better now than they were under R.C. (at least he found a way to get them in a bowl and knock off OU occasionally). There is no guarantee that Leach leaving necessarily means that we are going to be improving the program. Kinda of scary.
Keep Tommy Tuberville on speed dial!!
Isn’t it interesting to see the tide of public support for Leach shift as the real truth has finally come out.
I’m incredibly proud of Kent Hance for his unwillingness to play dirty ball with Leach and his agents (and rest assured, Leach is well aware of every action his agents take ahead of time). I’d have half a mind to see Hance dump Leach just on principle, as he stated in his interview last night on KCBD. Would it be THAT bad if Leach left? Maybe, maybe not…
I hope you aren't
Getting drug tested at work anytime soon…..it would SUCK if Leach left. Leach and Tech are a formula that we know has the program arrow pointing a solid up. We all know the captain is an odd bird, hell a lawyer himself. If it is a crime to be odd and arrogant, Gerald would be on death row. This is a two man pissing match…..Hance isn’t to be praised or scorned.
You take Myers and I will take Leach……
I’ll take Hance and you can have Leach. Fair enough. I don’t think the sky will fall in Lubbock if Leach leaves. There will be a difficult transition, to be sure, if he leaves. Will we automatically go back to 5th in the South? I see no reason to believe that. Coaches come and go and sometimes, sometimes, it works for the better.
I'll take Leach and you can have Myers and Hance...
And I’ll believe we can compete for a National Championship in the near future and you can look forward to another 11 win season in about thirty years or so…
Nope, the sky won’t fall. We’ve lived in mediocrity for decades and can probably do it for a few more generations. It’s just not much fun after you had a little glimpse that you were going to blow out of it sometime soon…

You guys need to realize....
That losing Mike Leach and this circus of ‘will he stay or will he go’ is not the worst thing that could happen to Tech. If Tech caves here and gets rid of the job shopping clause then we appear to the college football world as toothless and weak. I mean would it really be THAT hard to find a coach that wont let OU score 70 on us?
That’s fine…I personally think he’s a good coach. I also think he’s not the only good coach in the country that Tech could find. It will be a long and sad day in your house when your boy up and leaves Tech in a year or so, won’t it.
If you're talking about Leach, not too long and not too sad...
Like I said, I’ve lived through decades of this already. This was just the closest we’ve been to getting over the hump to the next level and now we’re in this situation because some people have got their feelings hurt.
My boy is planning to go to Tech in a few years, and that will be a very happy and proud day in my house.

Cool about your son…It has been a long uphill road for our football team, and everyone (me included) gives Leach a lion’s share of that credit. I also remember the debacle that was Jerry Moore and David McWilliams. And no, I am not keen on revisiting that scenario one bit.
But maybe looking at it like this…sometimes, a CEO comes in and turns around a company and makes them profitable. Gets a taste of success and sort of gets a little arrogant along the way. Shareholders, not keen on having that sort of ego run the show, grow frutstrated as the guy who turned the little company around has started looking to work for a Blue Chip. Feeling a bit spurned and taken advantage of, they decide to offer him a nice package but with a few restrictions to hedge the bet. Sure, it pisses off some folks and riles up some strong emotions. But it’s only because they love the company and want what’s best long term. If that means the fire hot CEO stays, that’s great. If not, then there is a company to run whether he’s around or not.
Moment Time
You need to realize everybody wants Leach and has supported the efforts to keep him at Tech but there comes a time when you have to say enough is enough. As an alum and STH I have sincerely enjoyed Leach and watching the team climb in the ranks. But the flip side is his arrogance and lack of truth when discussing this matter to the media and recruits. I would much rather he stay but not at the cost of pure greed and self indulgance. Who in hell wants an employee who looks for a new job every year. Besides all that Leach has been well taken taken care of in this new contract as though he has actually won a NC or BCS. An 11 win season is great but amounts to nothing in the record books without a BCS invite. Lastly, we deserve some or a little loyalty. If you don’t agree with that I think that is sad. The economy is in the crapper and Tech has done all it can to make Leach richer and it’s way more than fair at this point. Leach is not the only reason for Tech’s success. I know his offense has made the difference but their are plenty of other great coaches that have successful programs and ways of winning. Don’t be fool in thinking Leach has Tech’s best interests at heart lately.
Where to start...
77379-
Point #1- You are worried about appearing toothless and weak to the college football world?
Really? Boston College showed plenty of balls and we will see how that works out for them….but I don’t think they will have a banner hanging for ‘impressed college football world".
Point #2- How hard would it be to find a coach that won’t let OU score 70 on us? This diminishes what ML has done to a ridiculous level.
Tech 92-
I am not going to sit here and diss Hance….which is saying something considerring he is a lifelong politician and lobbyist. I take him at face value and from what I hear from people I respect (although Montoford set the bar in my mind). I do think Gerald is part of the problem and not the solution, if he is going to retire in the next year anyway…..lets make the timing work in our favor.
I DO NOT want a contract extension w/ Leach w/out a hefty buyout and where he doesn’t have to notify the school when he interviews. I acquiesce on the BS about likeness and his comp if the school fires him.
So all my cards are on the table….if there is a way to get Mike to sign for about the money we are offering (maybe more incentives) that includes the buyout and the notification I do it no questions asked. If we got pissed off about him interviewing at Miami and canned him two years ago, we wouldn’t have enjoyed the season that we did this year. Speak to our even more experienced Red Raiders that remember the Carlin situation….we need to do everything on our end to keep this marriage working. He is better at Tech, and Tech is better with him here. Both sides have contributed to this mess.

+1 on every single aspect...
Thanks for so clearly expressing what I imagine a number of the rest of us feel!

This will be decided by....
our version of Tom Hicks, the elite alums that are contributing the big bucks. Do they forgive ML’s posturing, flirtations and his agents being douchebags? Do they realize that Gerald should have done something way before he did, and that he is a hindrance now?
Damn, it has been all downhill since right before the OU kickoff.
