I may check out the cowboys stadium, but I have no intention of ever setting foot in the cotton bowl again.

thanks for the opening...

giving me the chance to say again how awful the experience of the Cotton Bowl was. I agree with you, Raider75, I will never go to the Cotton Bowl for any event – even if its free. And again, I say it has nothing to do with the score of the TTU vs. Ol’ Miss game: it was the absolute failure of the committee to host anything that even resembled a “classy” event. To me, it was "what if we host a supposed top-tier Bowl game with two great teams and fan bases, and sell every ticket we can, and then just blow the money and leave the fans on their own. No qualified security. No one who knows how to direct traffic. No information booths, no one who really knows an answer to a simple question. Let’s get 80K + fans through two gates, and let’s use 18 year old temps for breaking up fights, while the Dallas rent-a-cops have lively conversations between themselves down on the field, pausing to point to the 18 year old girl to go subdue a drunk dude twice her size. No, those memories will never let me make the mistake of going to the Crap-Bowl again.

Baylor...really?

Tech better be guaranteed a significant windfall for doing this. Home games should be played in Lubbock – local businesses bring in 5-7 million for each home game.

I feel like Bob Knight…Purdue!

Seriously, this is our answer to the Red River Rivalry…Baylor? OK so they stand to be much improved from their last decade of dreadful records, but this just doesn’t get me excited.

This feels like a second-rate game and sends the wrong message about Texas Tech football. It’s one thing if we could set up a neutral site game against a rival or a team that has experienced a level of success the past decade compared to Tech’s (Aggie for rival, Ok St for comparative team).

Some big Tech alumni have been pushing for Dallas games for quite a while, so I hope they’re happy about getting this lame game. I guess they get their brownie points with Jerry Jones going to Jerryworld.

No way in hell I go back to another game at the Cotton Dump.

From the chamber

I read somewhere. If you divide 7 mil by 60k, you get $116. For an out of town fan this is probably low, even if they don’t spend the night in LBK. I drive to the games (175 miles one way) and fly on the cheap side and spend more than $116 in LBK without staying overnight.

AJ - Visit Lubbock

It may not be the biggest game of Texas Tech’s football season, but moving the match-up with Baylor to Dallas means big money lost for Lubbock – between $5 million and $7 million. That’s what officials at Visit Lubbock are saying, and they aren’t alone in expressing their disappointment at losing a game to the Metroplex. According to Tech attendance records, the Baylor game has brought in either the second or third highest numbers of ticket holders in the last years. With 53,470 seats filled in 2008, that’s no small change for Lubbock hospitality businesses.____(AJ/Joshua Hull copy)

As Baylor improves

I would rather play them in Dallas versus Waco. This will be a good thing for Tech’s recruiting also. The Baylor game in Lubbock has been boring with the exception of last season. I think this is a positive move for Tech and a great opportunity for the Tech and Baylor alums in DFW area to see a good football game. These guys are getting better and I expect a great game this year.

Jerry should convince A&M and ISU to move to Arlington and call it the basement rivalry.

by Raider1992 on Mar 26, 2009 10:05 AM CDT reply actions

Never Been to Waco

We are the big dog in this series with Baylor…who is the big dog in the ATM vs Arkansas series? Just be thankful we can carry our own weight.

Tech is competing for media attention, which brings recruits athletically, as well as academically. Thank you Gerald Myers for not just passively watching other schools get theirs.

There will be a huge crowd at this years game in Jerryworld>>>some locals in Dallas can’t afford to see Jerryworld for a Cowboys game, so they will jump at the chance to see a competitive game in a billion dollar stadium for a third of what the ATM game with Arkansas will cost.

And I’d rather travel to Dallas than to Waco anytime.

by TT4EVER on Mar 26, 2009 12:05 PM CDT reply actions

Yes better in Waco

but the trade-off of giving a home game away isn’t worth it. We own Baylor, and anybody who plays the Red Raiders at the Cotton Dump owns us.

What’s next? Something like Tech versus Oklahoma State in Tokyo???

If I was a season ticket holder I’d be upset about this. I think everyone’s rationalization that this helps with recruiting exposure is crap. Let’s just go ahead and play every game in Houston and Dallas so we can get more recruits…people come to Lubbock for a reason.

Marketing 101...Tongue in Cheek
  1. get your product out there in front of as many potential customers as possible
-the product is Texas Tech University and its football program
-the potential customers are people who might see any promotion involving your product

Due to logistics, Tokyo is not good product placement for Texas Tech.

We have a home and home scheduled with Rice in Houston.

Tokyo Been Done

1988 against OSU when Tech lost to Barry Sanders. I guess the Tech officials have taken your class.

You get your team in front of fans by producing W’s and getting on TV (as you alluded to earlier TT4ever) – not by playing in Dallas.

Baylor is going to be pretty darn good, and I don’t think giving them the equivalent of 2 home games (95 miles Waco-Arl) is worth it.

They sure as hell are scarier than Rice.

I went to the last game here in Houston Tech played against Rice – turnout…blah. It will be like the game at the Cotton Bowl (yeah the one where we should have a home game against BU) – crappy turnout, but this one unlike Rice could potentially end up in the L column.

Nonconference game against an opponent in Cowboys Stadium, great – conference game against Baylor – not supportive.

Get the season ticket holders to pay more and donate to the Red Raider Club to expand stadium and then take away a home game against a conference opponent.

Let’s add a #3 to your marketing list – Brand Loyalty.

by rpowel2 on Mar 26, 2009 1:15 PM CDT reply actions

lol

You were making a point earlier about Baylor not being a worthy opponent, now you are saying you are scared of them.

by TT4EVER on Mar 26, 2009 1:53 PM CDT reply actions

it's a conference game

and compared to Rice yes I fear them much more.

by rpowel2 on Mar 26, 2009 2:09 PM CDT reply actions

Seriously

I don’t really think tech playing at the Cotton Bowl in ‘10 is an issue. I know we have had bad luck there but that’s going to change. We lost to Ole Miss for lots of other reason besides bad luck in that stadium. Nobody cared to be in that bowl and Leach was uncertain about his future with Tech. That is why Tech lost that game.
Also, I am a season ticket holder from Dallas and don’t mind seeing the Baylor game in Dallas. It’s one less road trip to Lubbock for a typically bad game less last season. Tech will win in the Cotton bowl stadium moving forward.

by Raider1992 on Mar 26, 2009 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not worried about luck either

My biggest concern is playing on natural turf. Passing teams seem to do better on artificial turf. This is another reason I’m positive about the Texas game …. they went back to artificial turf.

by RR77 on Mar 26, 2009 9:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I certainly cared

when the whole downtown restaurant I was at in Dallas did their little “Hotty Toddy” chant and I screamed VANDERBILT and WAKE FOREST after each annoying chant – I can guarantee you I was fired up to beat those guys!

I also think Division I college players are motivated to win any game they play. It wasn’t because Tech wasn’t motivated to win, it was because Nutt decided his corners were good enough athletes to take our outside receivers. With a 35% Crabtree, he gambled and won. They also had some nasty blockers (read “The Blind Side” about Michael Oher – amazing story) who shredded us.

80% of the people who go to Tech games are from Lubbock, and I believe they would rather have the game be in Lubbock as would any local merchants.

by rpowel2 on Mar 26, 2009 3:39 PM CDT reply actions

The Cotton Bowl? Really?

What’s the love affair with the playing a game at the Cotton Bowl? This is a facility that is so cheaply run that the Dallas Mayor and City Council wouldn’t even upgrade it for the Cowboys!!

If you have to have the “Dallas Exposure” for recruiting at least do it at a state of the art facility like Jerry World.

by ttu_porters on Mar 27, 2009 10:45 AM CDT reply actions

Torn

I’m torn. I kind of promised myself I would never give another dime to Jerry The Egomaniac after what he’s done to the Cowboys.

Arlington is far closer for me than Lubbock, but I know I’ll start foaming at the mouth as soon as the parking attendant wants $30-40. Actually I have no idea what the parking fee will be, but according to DMN the fee will be $75 per game for Cowboy games. I wouldn’t pay that much to park even if they threw in game tickets.

by TechFirst on Mar 28, 2009 12:05 PM CDT reply actions

$75 to park?

WTF. That might be the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in a long time. You better get a lap dance from a Cowboys Cheerleader with that.

by the1austin on Apr 1, 2009 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure what parking will be for this game, but it was $38 for George Strait in June. Probably similar, though the football game will draw significantly fewer people. The concert sold out in a day or two. Maybe it will cost more due to fewer cars…it’s a scam either way.

by Tech92 on Mar 29, 2009 12:43 PM CDT reply actions

parking is a scam. good lord. they’re charging $60 for parking when purchased without a ticket for the A&M Arkansas game.

by kayakyakr on Mar 29, 2009 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t give a damn if Lubbock loses ONE game of revenue from increased people in town for the weekend. They have 30,000 of our kids from Dallas and Houston year round spending crap-loads of money. Lubbock should thank its lucky stars the state chose them over Snyder back in the ‘20s. I’m not hating on the Hub City, but kwityerbitchin Lubbock! See the forest from the trees. More success for Tech = more butts in more seats = mas dinero y mas tortillas for Rosa’s to sell.

by Plano Jeff on Mar 30, 2009 11:34 AM CDT reply actions

I think Gerald Myers screwed you by moving a conference game to Dallas

If Tech was going to play a game at a neutral site, why not a non-conference game against a real opponent?

Hell, see if LSU would be willing to play in Dallas or Houston every year, and set that up.

Baylor in Dallas? Really?

I don’t think you’ll sell out Jerryworld, not for that opponent in this economy. Baylor fans aren’t known for traveling well, so they’re not going to hold up their end of the bargain.

Baylor wanted the games at the Cotton Bowl, Tech wanted Jerryworld, the split is the compromise.

I just think Myers completely let y’all down on this one; conference games are two important to not be played on campus every other year, and unless you are traditionally an off-campus rivalry game, like OU-texas, there is no point in playing a conference game at a neutral site (and remember that OU-texas was a non-conference game before 1996).

by Beergut on Apr 5, 2009 5:08 AM CDT reply actions

Last game

It is the last game of the season (regular) and one game will not make a differance where it is played. It’s Baylor and everyone is high on Griffin.Yes he is a good player but one or two players does not make a team.Even Crabsand Harrell was not the whole team last year.

This year will be even better I think as far as spreading the ball around, and we have some damn good players.Beergut you might worry about your beloved Aggies, and not worry about weather we will sell out at Jerry world or not.Is ATM even going to be above.500? There will be more Baylor fans than people realize. And Tech will surely have it’s share of fans….

by slycanyon on Apr 5, 2009 6:14 PM CDT reply actions

I thought beergut made a valid point. There isn’t really a need to tear him down just because he shows up and makes a post.

by kayakyakr on Apr 6, 2009 8:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Give Beergut, some props

I agree with Beergut, also. He made a good point about scheduling a great non-conference game in Dallas vs. a mediocre conference game.

by ttu_porters on Apr 7, 2009 9:06 AM CDT reply actions

No tear down

I was not tearing him down kayakyakr.I simply put that beergut should worry about his own team.Sure let him put anything on this post( well not anything). It is called rivalry.making the conversation lively. After all they do come here this year.

As usual the expected reprimand comes from kayakyakr.I can I start sending you my post so you can approve what I post on here? huh? can that be done? would you like that?

by slycanyon on Apr 7, 2009 7:25 PM CDT reply actions

Calm down friend. I was just saying that this is a thread about the Tech v. Baylor game moving to Dallas. You were the one who brought the aggies into this conversation. I’m not moderating your posts, but I will post my own personal opinions in response to any post that I feel detracts from the conversation. If i was moderating your posts, I would just press the “hide” button.

by kayakyakr on Apr 8, 2009 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions

it would sorta be like my dad, who is an aggie, commenting on this point and being discredited just because he’s an aggie. i don’t want anyone to think anyone is trying to censor anyone here, just offering different opinions. there’s no problem with giving the opposition a hard time (in fact they’re doing that all by themselves — http://cowboysinsiderblog.dallasnews.com/).

FYI

Beergut was on another blog the night we beat ATM in the tourny. He started out really laying it on.By the time the game was over (A TECH ) win and the night Singeltary scored 29 points,Beergut was hilarious and then we could not find him after the game.

So this actually was an snip for snip comment probably understood if Beergut reads it. So kayakyakr why not kinda chill dude.I have read your post on allot of subjects on here, and you are right on allot of the time.It just seems like you correct on every subject.I want 60,000 fans at Jerry world if that could happen.HOW BOUT U?
And Seth has it right “there’s no problem with giving the opposition a hard time” as long as we do it without demeaning anyone.

So come on, the Spring game is around the corner and the first game will be here before you know it.As far as keeping this about the BAYLOR- TECH I hope we are undefeated.when we go there.I am an eternal optimist, about TECH football.I can see us beating TEXAS for Gods sake.and I have gotten allot of grief for that one even from my own TECH brethren.Oh well I just love my Raiders,I support them financially and I bleed red and black—later…
