LAJ's George Watson takes a look at the effect of sophomore catcher Jeremy Mayo and the fact that he has seven home runs thus far:

"I never thought I’d hit seven home runs coming into this year," said Mayo, who is second on the team in long balls behind first baseman Chris Richburg and ranks eighth in the Big 12 Conference in the category. "I just wanted to be a gap-to-gap hitter and hit doubles and drive in runs. They just keep coming and whatever works, I’ll stay with it."

Head Coach Dan Spencer sounds like he appreciates what Mayo brings and (the reference to Monk is Monk Kreder, the starter last year, transferred somewhat unexpectedly):

"We knew Mayo was going to make a big push (for the starting job in the fall)," Spencer said. "He wants to be the guy, he wants to be the leader and he wants to be the backbone of the team. As far as the skill package and what he can do there’s no comparison. Jeremy is just a much better player and maybe Monk figured that out before the rest of us."

DT's Mike Graham talks to the team about facing another ranked opponent, the 26-7 Oklahoma Sooners, who are great with the bat and pretty good in the field:

It's been easy for OU offensively.

Infielder Bryant Hernandez leads the Big 12 in hits with 55, is second in runs scored with 42 - behind teammate Jamie Johnson who has 50 - and is third in RBIs with 38. OU leads the Big 12 in batting with a .343 average, while Tech ranks seventh with a .292.

In the field, OU ranks third with a .974 percentage. Tech ranks last of the 10 Big 12 baseball programs with a .953 percentage.
