Fight Breaks Out During Practice, Captain Leach Unimpressed

I had a laugh out loud moment this morning when I started to read LAJ's Don Williams account of yesterday's practice, where multiple fights broke out, including one that led receivers coach Dennis Simmons and defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill to have to apologize to each other. Fox34 has some video of the fight in yesterday's practice report.

This was the LAJ's report of the fight in yesterday's practice:

Texas Tech running back Harrison Jeffers made himself a target for defensive teammates who accused him of hitting after the whistle during Wednesday’s spring practice.

That touched off what looked like a more serious than usual fight during the 11-on-11 team period. Defensive end Daniel Howard and linebacker Bront Bird went after Jeffers in retaliation, and the skirmish quickly turned into a pile of players.

Linebacker Sam Fehoko entered and swung a helmet, which caused wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons to chew out Fehoko and drive him back away from the fray. That led to defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill and Simmons jawing at one another with McNeill barking at Simmons to police his own players.

And the Captain Mike Leach's reaction to all of this:

Leach watched the fracas without much reaction.

Actually, Leach did have some reaction to the fracas, including this from Williams' story:

Asked what Jeffers was doing to raise the defense’s hackles, Tech coach Mike Leach said, "Getting yards.’’

First, I think this perhaps speaks to the Captain's master plan, which is to perhaps motivate the defense a bit. Harrison Jeffers is an incredible talent and I think Leach knows that this is a guy that is going to cause Big 12 defensive coordinators to adjust their gameplans.

Leach did have an actual comment on the fighting and I think that Leach needs to find that fine line between practicing with passion, something that did not happen under Setencich, versus a defensive unit that is finally tired of giving yards:

"We’re going to issue some consequences (for fighting) from here on," he said later, "because I think it’s important to practice controlling your emotions. We’re going to make sure that we take advantage of the opportunity. But I do like the aggression. I think everybody’s heart’s in the right place. They’ve just got to do it during plays and avoid the between-plays stuff."

I can only hope that this is not a dividing moment in this team, but rather something that can bring these guys together as the spring progresses.

While I think we shouldn’t be “dirty” in practice, I also think it’s naive to expect that our opponents won’t do some of the things that got the defense riled up. Honestly, I think it’d be good for the D. to get experience handling that, both to cut down on penalties (play under control) and to limit production (keep opponents from gaining extra off “dirty” play). In that sense AND in the area of firing the boys up, I think this is all to the good. Also, glad to hear that McNeill is getting fired up for his guys in practice. If they feel like he’s there for them, I can only think that’ll motivate them to play for him. Mike Leach is a brilliant coach, but having some motivators is a very GOOD thing.

The helmet swing is the only thing that bothers me.

Football is replete with stories of successful divided houses. I don’t care if the offense and the defense love each other. All I want is for them to hate the other team.

Can’t be swinging helmets though, Fehoko.

Go register. Or else.

All is good

This is expected when pads are put on and the “real” hitting starts to happen. This happens every year, but it seems this year they are just a bit more physical. That will result in over-exuberance on both sides of the ball. When they get into the “feel” of playing all out, they will settle in and control their attitudes better. I like the aggression, but like Skin Patrol said, no helmet throwing or swinging. That can get someone hurt unnecessarily. Overall, great day, with more aggressive practices to come, I hope. Also, we all sure hope Brandon’s injury is nothing serious. He definitely brings a tough attitude to the line and we need his presence.

Must have been a very slow news day....

…to focus on a football fracas that occured in practice. Flare ups between players…especially while vying for starting positions…is certainly nothing new. It happens at all levels, junior high through pro. It’s gonna continue to happen, I think the coaches gave the appropriate responses and they will deal w/it accordingly. Let’s move on..

I wasn't trying to highlight

this story in a bad way. Actually, I thought Leach’s reaction was the funny part to me and that’s pretty much my reaction too, just as long as no one got hurt. Perhaps this story is also getting a little play because in previous years, there was no hitting during practice (Setencich years), so maybe this is a good thing, in a very basic sort of way.

Also, I’m trying to do a better job of actually highlighting certain stories of the day and thought this was the biggest one, so yes, there was some editorial decisions made by me.

hey Cityman don't know if you looked at the calendar.....

Its April and it may be “a slow news day” but myself and others that frequent this blog appreciate any news regarding the football team.

I also think it is somewhat significant to report since Tech and Leach have been ripped for years because lack of attention to the defense. This bit of useless news to you tells the rest of us that the defense may be turning a corner and who doesnt love a fight? LOL

This defense has allot to prove..Most are comming back from last year. They want the taste of OU and OLE MISS out of their mouths quickly……We will see that (I think) a defense that we have never seen in years…..And last year was pretty good……..SO GET MAD AND STAY MAD!!!!!!!
