DTN's Best of Lubbock // Reader Submissions for Best Mexican Food

I have no idea how well this is going to go over, but the point of all of this is to get it straight from you guys as to the Best of Lubbock. This will serve as a guide to Big 12 fans who visit Lubbock. We'll have one each week, with the first part of the week being reader submissions and at the end of the week, I'll compile the most talked about suggestions and make a poll.

Have at it in the comments, who has the best Mexican food in town. Poll will happen on Friday.

Ruby Tequila's
Does no one like Ruby Tequila’s? I’ve had some damn good food there! Josie’s and Rosa’s seem more fastfoo-esque to me.
gugree, but for fastfoo-esque, Josie's kicks A.
I like MamaRita’s and Rosa’s for ultra casual, Abuelo’s for a little mas formality. And…If anyone wants REAL authentic, Gloria’s on 50th and Q, but a traveler’s guide probably wouldn’t list that.
Having been in Lubbock
for the past 5 years (undergrad and masters) I do not think Abuelos and Ruby’s are in the same class. While Abuelos is located all over Texas I think it’s the best in Lubbock.
EXCUSE ME!
But has everyone forgotten your favorite drunken mexican spot? LONE WOLF! I mean ya its been a few years since I have been at Tech, but I used to live down the street from this place, and time and time again it came through in the clutch… AND they served beer late, on top of being 24 hrs. Ya the food makes your brown eye red every now and then, but those breakfast tacos are top notch baby!
We don't want Iowa State fans leaving the Panhandle with Montezuma's revenge
Assuming we won and bear no ill will to them. And BTW, when the Americana fare comes up in the rotation, we should all purposely snub Spanky’s because it’s to dang busy on gamedays as it is and I don’t want to add to my wait time for a table.
I CANNOT BELIEVE I MISSED THIS ONE.
Lone Wolf, I hate myself for missing this. I used to go there really drunk and play the little bar game they have for trivia, I think I probably put 30 bucks into it one night.
I destroyed that menu, then I destroyed their bathroom.
chains shouldn't be included on this list...there's an Albuelo's in Mason, OH of all places!
Josie’s definitely for breakfast….even lunch. Best salsa in town!
Is Santa Fe still in Lubbock? It was on Slide when I was last there…
Ruby Tequila’s also rules….
There is no great Mexican food north of I-20
That being said, Abuelo’s does a good job. I especially like their Mexican style sea food.
Rosa’s is Taco Bell with beer, or in other words Crisco blended with Picante on a flower tortilla and a beer.
There has to be a great “comercios familiares” in Lubbock that the locals eat at that we
expatriates don’t know about.
VIVA LA FIGA!
Don't be foolish....
Abuelo’s is by far and away the best mexican food in the LBK. I must admit, I am a bit of a food snob, but if you are willing to spend a little dough on some mexican food Abuelos cannot be beat.
Bmaxw is right, the mexican seafood is great.
A not so close second and third would be Garcia’s and Lujans.

Taqueria Jalisco/Picantes
Jalisco is my favorite and reminds me of S.A. Mexican food. Picantes is also pretty authentic, the owner is from Monterrey I think? Montelongo’s is also a pretty good third option. Oh, and don’t forget Cancun. Is that too many?
Rosa’s is Tex-Mex. Abuelo’s is Mexican-Influenced Cuisine. Lone Wolf and Josie’s are what I call Drunk-Mex. Great for a late night fix, but not that great with a BAC < 0.08. Just my take.
this dude is the truth
Montelongo’s, jalisco’s, and that one place on 19th near lubbock high(not queso’s)
ruby tequila’s and mamarita’s have garbage food, drinks aside
abuelo’s is decent, but overpriced and pretty white-ified
Abuelos
I think Abuelos should probably count as a chain. There are several in TX and OK. There is even one here in Myrtle Beach, SC. Josie’s for breakfast, Rosas for lunch (if they still have the $2.99 taco Tuesdays!), Abuelos for a date/supper and Lone Wolf if you dont get any on the date.
Lone Wolf, Can I take your order?
I need a chorizo and egg burrito, a Lone Wolf platter, a Lone Wolf nachos with extra guacomole, a Bud Light, some salsa out of the fridge (red or green?) Ef it, both. 6 tacos, some TP, a new butt-hole to attach tomorrow and a menu, cuz I’ll be back next week… (Is that it?) Yeah, my buddy wants Whataburger. (That’ll be $6.28, pull up.) Woohoo!
