HS Star Rankings

There's a great nugget on the DMN about the guys drafted in the first round of the draft this weekend, and their star ranking coming out of high school.

According to the tidbit, the four and five star kids were hits about 56% of the time and ended up as first round picks. On the other hand, 14 of the 32 first round picks were three star and lower coming out of high school.

So, it really doesn't seem to matter too much if you fill your roster with guys who have only three, maybe four stars. Yes, there are vastly fewer five star kids than three star kids out there each year, but the point being that you can field a solid winning program without a bevy of 4- and 5-star HS athletes. Just do what we do and coach'em up!

I think most of you knew that already, but it was still interesting to see it broken out.

Here's the link.

Where the 5-stars went:
1. QB Matthew Stafford, Georgia
5. QB Mark Sanchez, USC
6. OT Andre Smith, Alabama
8. OT Eugene Monroe, Virginia
22. WR Percy Harvin, Florida
31. RB Chris Wells, Ohio State
When a player is courted by the perceived ‘elite’ schools, then signed, usually by those same schools, they automatically are rated higher. All of the 4-Star recruits could have easily been labeled as 5-Stars. Therefore, this is just another excellent way to verify the prejudice of those that do the ratings toward the perceived ‘elite’ schools’ prospects. Also, without listing them, the bulk of the 4-Stars drafted in the first round attended ‘elite’ schools, with a few exceptions. Just more fodder for the argument.

It seems like the Patriots have a similar view from a draft standpoint. They try to focus their efforts in the second round. They feel they can get more “value” from the second round versus the first – they had 4 second round picks this year. In college recruiting terms, they seem to go after 4 and 3 stars versus the five stars. Just a thought.

Just think about how much money they save on signing their late picks. Compare that to the performance the Cowboys have gotten out of 1st round pick Bobby Carpenter. Not much value there. Plus they don’t love ANYONE enough to jeopardize the franchise by costly contract extensions with vets. (reply to 77. Forgot to hit reply in case this thread grows)
