The College Football Beauty Pageant Has Commenced
The day after the draft (just about) and this has already started. At least we're projected at #23.

Key returnees: WRs Lyle Leong and Detron Lewis, DT Colby Whitlock, CB Jamar Wall. Spring star: QB Taylor Potts. The junior from Abilene, Texas, looks ready to succeed 5,000-yard passer Graham Harrell. Coach Mike Leach usually waits until preseason camp to name a new starting quarterback, but he seems ready to anoint Potts. Spring recap: Despite the loss of Harrell and WR Michael Crabtree, the Red Raiders shouldn't fall too far. They bring back most of their defense, and Leach's offenses always put up points. Sophomore Cody Davis, one of the new first-teamers at safety, turned heads with a 100-yard interception return in the spring game.

man that 4 returning offensive starters is really misleading.
Players who received significant time last year in those positions:
Hamby → Byrnes
Morris → Swindall
Woods → Batch
Keeping those players in mind, we really lost 4 on offense, Harrell, Crabs, Reed, and Vasquez. Not to discount the contribution of the other 3 nor the major impact of the 4 listed as lost…
Bonus: Dixon probably won’t be back with the team, bringing our returning defensive players down to 7. 2 safeties and our 2 ends.
really?
I know the whole JUCO story for Dixon. But is his suspension really likely to be for good?

Teach returns a good group
But so do most every other team. The road ahead is not for the weak. If they are to come close to matching last year’s success, they will have to show some more improvement during the Spring workouts. The front line will again be strong and I feel the backups this year may be a bit better. I like McNeil’s adding more schemes for the defense. No more easy stuff. They will have to put up or shut up. I think they will more than hold their own, but this whole bunch really needs to get it all going the right direction before they visit the foggyhorns. With the foggyhorns being picked to finish #2, the Raiders will be hard-pressed to pull off a win in Austin. Should they get that done, they will definitely need to get it all together better this year after that game to continue a great run to a BCS bid. Th Raiders are poised to surprise many people this year. I just hope they don’t ever let their guard down and come out smoking, destroying the first teams they play, setting the table for another great year.

Win in Austin and Tech will get more respect
It will be very difficult to do but if Mike Leach wants to redeem Tech after last season’s late train wreck a victory over UT will be the remedie. I expect we’ll have 3-4 games that go the other way this season but I also expect UT and OU to stumble some also. I watched UT in the their spring game and they definately have some weaknesses. OU will take them down this year. Tech needs to ready every week like last season. Nebraska will be much better and we have them away from home. I would give anything to see Tech beat the longhorns in Austin. Just imagine the media surrounding that game. I’ll bet it’s ESPN college gameday for sure. Can’t wait for football to start.
A conference game THAT early may just be what the Doctor ordered for Tech. Im not saying we will win. But last years game in Lubbock, the ’07 rope a dope game in Austin (where both fighters we hangin on to the ropes with one hand and punching with the other) and the ’03 BJ Symons game (just missed OT by 3ft on a missed FG) point to a good trend.

The only thing that makes me pause is that Tech dominated UT at home for 3 1/2 qtrs. And if not for an exceedingly easy INT drop, would have lost the game. I think Texas will be improved from last year, while I think we’ll take a small step back – at least early on. I do think Tech will have a solid team when all is said and done…strong record and nice bowl game. But the timing of the UT game, to me, couldn’t be worse.
UT in Austin will be EXCEEDINGLY difficult. I was confident of the ‘08 game because Texas lost several players at key positions AND we got them at home. Next year we’ll get the same situation so ‘10 should be exciting. Unfortunately, the tables are turned on us this year. We’ve got to play them on the road and we’ve lost several KEY players (we lost 4 players to the NFL draft and that doesn’t even include our quarterback who left). If we can somehow pull an upset win in Austin, the future of the ’09 season will be blindingly bright if we can stay focused.
Young Gun Raiders
This is a young team that needs all the reps and out of conference Whipping Boys we can find. Therefore, I am cautiously optimistic about the Sept. 19th trip to the 40 Acres. I think by mid Oct. this team will have it’s “sea legs” under them and finish strong. Look out OU!!! You know what they say about paybacks.
