Mike Leach vs. Mike Sherman, Part III

Leach and Fran, preparing for a warm embrace.

Leach and Fran, preparing for a warm embrace.

LAJ's Don Williams talks with Captain Mike Leach and because he hates not having the last word (emphasis mine):

"I never questioned the handling of the (A&M) players in any way and have always expressed the utmost respect for their coaching staff," Leach told The Avalanche-Journal.

"I’ve always said that it is truly exciting to play Texas A&M - the quality of coaches they have, the great team and great tradition and, above all, the quality of players they have," Leach continued. "I’ve always known A&M had great players. The fact that they have the luxury to put a third- or fourth-round draft pick on the bench, to me, identifies what a truly great team they are.

"It’s an honor for us at Texas Tech to have the opportunity to play them. There are numerous players on our team that will never get a look or play a down in the NFL, so you can imagine how exciting it is for me and them to go play a team the magnitude of Texas A&M and look over there on the bench and see third- and fourth-round draft picks."

Williams article points out the timeline of the entire situation, and as this war of words has been on display since Sunday, TAMU head coach Mike Sherman issued an official statement on Tuesday from TAMU's sports information office. To which Leach responded:

"How can anyone not be shocked that they’re offended by this?" Leach told The A-J. "How is that possible? I mean, they’re the ones that keep issuing these official statements. I haven’t issued any official statement. I just answer questions when somebody asks me one."

Yeah, I'd really like to write something witty or clever about this entire exchange, but I really don't think I can top any of this.

But it gets better because Leach isn't done taking on folks, up next is the NFL.

DMN's Kevin Sherrington didn't have the luxury of seeing Williams' article linked above when he provided his two cents on the NFL vs. Leach feud:

Frankly, that's what makes him fun. Consider his take on the draft order of the state's top quarterbacks, which went Matthew Stafford, McGee, then Rhett Bomar, with Harrell and Chase Daniel bringing up the rear as free agents.

"I ranked them Harrell and then Bomar," Leach said. "Stafford I liked also."

For a few moments, he didn't say anything. But you could sense it coming.

And sure enough . . .

"You know, the NFL likes size so much, Brandon Williams should have been drafted as a quarterback," he said of his former defensive end, picked by the Cowboys. "He's tall, about 240 pounds, and he can throw it a real long ways. As a matter of fact ..."

And just when I was about to hit publish on this post, I ran across The Chron's Brent Zwerneman discussion with Mike Sherman, and Sherman is not giving anyone a free pass:

Responded Sherman on Tuesday, "I'm not one to say that's just Mike being Mike. You're not going to get a free pass with me. I don't get a free pass. I would never comment about any of his guys."

McGee won the starting job last preseason, but was injured in the second game and never fully recovered. Sherman, who said he tried calling Leach on Monday to no avail, wasn't sure what to make of Leach's comment.

"That could have been taken as a shot at Stephen McGee that if he was so good then why didn't he play?" Sherman said. "Or it could have been taking a shot at the Cowboys, or at (former A&M coach) Dennis Franchione.

"Coach Franchione's job wasn't to try and make Stephen an NFL quarterback, it was to win football games. And if it was his feeling that running the football was his best choice, like it was when I was here (as an assistant) with R.C. (Slocum), then that's what he did."

I should also mention that according to Tech Talk's Chris Level, Leach attempted to call Sherman on Tuesday, but his calls were not accepted. Take that for what it's worth.

The time is on us

to go on. This is nothing but a hot-dog eating contest now. It was fun and funny, but is getting a bit on the ridiculous now. The real message we should be going over is that the NFL has decided as a whole to pass on quarterbacks from Texas Tech. Why? To send their tired old message that they do not think much of spread offenses. Actually, if they would take a realistic view at their league, they will see that many of the top offenses in the NFL run a version of the spread, and drafting a spread offense-minded quarterback would actually be beneficial for them. It would make going into that particular offensive setup much easier for them if their quarterback was already well-versed in running it. For me, it is obvious that the best at running the spread are coming out of Texas Tech—-all of the quarterbacks Leach has had. Any of them could be successful NFL quarterbacks if the teams running the spread would bring them in and let them lead the way. So, the best thing to do would be to run through the offenses all the NFL teams use and determine those that need a Tech quarterback to run that offense that is closely related to the spread. I have a feeling the results of the inquiry will show over half the teams running a form of the spread a majority of the time. This will make for much more interesting reading until football season is here than a he said-he said type of coverage. Let us move forward.

I believe the Spread Offense is Evolutionary not Revolutionary

I think over time (provided Leach stays at Tech), NFL coaches will gravitate more to the spread. As this happens, Tech’s QBs will become more attractive. IMO, it is a matter of time.

They already are..

I don’t see how what Peyton Manning and Tom Brady run in indy and New England aren’t spread offenses. Watch the Pats, Brady is in Shotgun70% of the time. Same with Manning. The Rams won a Super Bowl running the spread. The Cards got to one running a pass heavy, shotgun oriented scheme.

It might not be a 59 pass attempt per game scheme yet, but it will eventually get there.

Aggies are very sensitive people...

these days. Sherman is on the hot seat and aggies are growing frustrated with losing so much. Leach made a statement that has been blown up by the media and it’s growing like a cancer. No mystery that Tech and A&M don’t like each other. A&M used to be the only rival to UT in the state in the old SWC days. The Big 12 changed everything along with Leach’s offense. Most people discard A&M these days as a team of the past. Tech’s national attention must really hurt these guys. I have an idea. Lets create a bronze Mike Leach in front of the stadium and point his rear towards A&M.

um, yeah
Sherman is on the hot seat

Sherman only has 6 years left on his guaranteed contract; definitely " on the hot seat". ::rolleyes::

Another loss to Arkansas State and then we'll talk hot seat

But if Petrino blows you guys out in Dallas, and you finish 6th in the South again (which right now is probably the most likely scenario), then Sherman will undoubtedly have people looking at the buyout price over next summer.

LOL!

Gotta love Leach for gigging the Aggies: “a team the magnitude of Texas A&M and look over there on the bench and see third- and fourth-round draft picks.” Sherman is overmatched in this war of words!

With respect to our Blurb

I noticed Lyle Leong gets mentioned. I dont know what it is but there is just SOMETHING about this kid that I like. There is just something about the way this guy moves. He just LOOKS like a big time wideout. I will go so far as to say this kid is gonna have a GREAT season

Wreck 'em, Tech!

I don't know if he'll be afforded the opportunity to shine as much as you want TP,

But I kind of have the same gut feeling towards him. I feel like he’s a GAMER.

I don't like this war of words because I think we are not on the civil side of it.

That being said, everything Leach says is pure GOLD. I don’t like that McGee is caught in the middle, that’s why I think it’s improper, but I’m so torn because Leach is saying all the things I would say if pressed. The last quote about us being so privledged to play the Aggies is just, well, it’s just greatness.

by Plano Jeff on Apr 30, 2009 10:25 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Sarcasm

is thick in that last statement, but I love how he left it where he did. Didn’t mention anything about how we have beat them (what are we to now?) ~10 out of the last 13 times. He just says it is a privilege to play them and moves on. That HAS to qualify as class, if he were being unclassy or disrespectful he would have brought up the recent record imo.

This ‘dispute’ was cute for a day or two. Now it’s just stupid. I’m not sure what Leach’s motivation is at this point for taking the shots, besides maybe boredom. Most people seem to think there’s a method to his madness, so we’ll see what the final word is.

Some folks may think it’s charming, (and I’m all for getting under Aggie skin) but I am guessing Tech will – yet again – get toasted in the media. I somewhat understand defending your players and program (why he feels he needs to do that with Aggie is beyond me)…but we just had the best draft in decades. He’s unwittingly minimizing the accomplishments of McBath, Williams, Vasquez and Crabtree with his comment about playing without draftable players. In this case, the more he say’s the worse we look…but then again, Tech is at their best when it’s the “us against the world” mentality they hold on to.

Should be an interesting game week this year, for sure.

…and yes, I realize he was being sarcastic with most of what he said.

I thought the same thing regarding the media.

Although it was before the latest salvos, it was after Sherman had responded, I was watching PTI and ATH a couple days ago and I saw “Leach” as the upcoming headline on both. PTI guys were pretty even-handed, saying something along the lines of ain’t it entertaining. I thought the ATH guys were going to really dress him down, but 3 out of 4 sided with him in his criticism of the NFL, said he was speaking truth, and only Plashke (who loves to swing his mighty moral hammer) had anything critical to say, and even his was mild. And then he went on to say that Harrell would be fine and listed a bunch of non-drafted or late drafted QBs who had done great, like Brady, I think Warren Moon, and Kurt Warner.

It will be interesting to see the media reaction to his later, pretty obviously sarcastic comments. I think they’re hysterical, but I read them for the first time when drunk, and so maybe I’m just endeared to them via the sauce.

What I take from all this is that the reason coaches usually are so not-Leach is because there is this thought that they must be doing, 24/7, whatever it takes to improve the team and thus you get a lot of canned responses and follow-the-leader type stuff because nobody wants to open themselves up to criticism that they’ve damaged their program through word or deed. For example, I can go read TexAgs and see that everyone predicts unavoidable doom because Leach’s comments will clearly scare away every quarterback recruit Tech will ever have. Then I can go to RaiderPower and they say the opposite. I don’t think there is an intuitive conclusion regarding Leach’s comments and their effect on the program, especially since the link between what a coach says in a slow CFB news cycle and the impact on a program, a year, two years, three years, whatever later it has.

Leach has been Leach for a long time, and as you pointed out we just had our best drafted class in his era. I don’t know if what he says helps the program or hurts it. What I do know is that the trajectory of our team has been generally going up in his tenure as measured by wins, and that’s what I’m most focused on.

It makes for an entertaining offseason at least, right?

Go register. Or else.

I don't think what each said will hurt his QB recruiting

I thnk the fact that he can’t get a QB drafted might eventually do that.

However, if you figure there will always be a Graham Harrell (or a Todd Reesing or some other kid), who has enough size to be a good college QB and read defenses and run Leach’s offense coming out every years or so in Texas, do you really care what the recruiting gurus say?

by Beergut on Apr 30, 2009 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

I couldn’t agree with you more. NFL football doesn’t even compare to College football if you ask me.

by techtom4 on Apr 30, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely not.

Leach had never produced an NFL talent before we got Karam or Potts or Harrell and he won’t need to produce an NFL draft pick to get 4 star recruits. He’s proven that.

McGee flat out said going to A&M affected, negatively, his draft. I doubt Harrell will say that about Texas Tech. Our recruiting has improved, not surprisingly, as our wins have increased. My issue from above is that there is too much psychoanalyzing about the nuanced effects of, say, Harrell not getting drafted. Do you really think that will have a major impact on recruiting? It’s one, tiny talking point that other coaches will use to try and steer kids away. At the end of the day, the far more important things a recruit will focus on are: Does this team get on National TV? Does this team win? Will I get to pass the ball?

I’m slightly baffled why the best drafted class of Mike Leach’s tenure turns out to be the one, per many, that will cause us to lose the most recruits. That seems odd.

But to answer your question again, no I don’t care what the recruiting gurus say, especially.

Go register. Or else.

not much to write about right now, so this makes their job easier.

IT!

Leach’s quotes brighten my day!

I just can’t bring it up too much around the Aggie wifey…. ;)

Tech is getting higher rated players

to consider coming to Tech and have even been able to sign a few. We simply do not have enough desire to use the money of our backers to sweeten any offer. What Tech can offer, and what several top recruits have said has attracted them to Tech, is the high graduation rate of the footballers, including all of the seniors this year graduating, which will move us further up the ladder, away from the rest of the Big-12. I think all of the recruits are seeing exactly what we see, the improvement of Mike Leach as a head coach. His bold move of making McNeil the DC was huge and will help improve this team very much. With the improved athletic abilities of the backs, the passing game will become even more deadly. Also, with Potts’ strong arm, stretching the field will help also to improve the overall offensive production. Excitement reigns.

I think the Offensive Line Makes a Difference

I’m sure one of you guys know the answer to this – how many Red Raiders currently play OL for NFL teams? Leach has established consistently high-level interest for offensive linemen. I would think that QB recruits would consider this greatly. Who would want to go to a team – knowing you are going to get sacked a lot? As long as Leach continues to have success recruiting OL, I believe he will be successful recruiting QB talent. In the big scheme of things, this Harrell episode will have a negligible affect.
