A mid-week complete game loss? That's just not something I'm accustomed to seeing, but UTSA's Tony Benedict did. Texas Tech split the double-header with UTSA, losing the first game 0-2 (recap) and winning the second game, 7-6 (recap).
In the first game, Lorenzo Douglas (6.0 IP; 2 ER; 3 BB; 5 SO) gave the Red Raidrs an excellent effort and Colton Farrar (1.0 IP; 2 H; 0 ER; 0 BB; 0 SO) pitched a perfect 7th inning. The offense, however, was very quiet, producing only 3 hits , two of them from Chris Richburg (2-3). Still a good effort by Douglas, who hasn't pitched in a long time.
The second game had a little bit more drama as Nate Karns (6.0 IP; 6 H; 3 ER; 0 BB; 11 SO) gave Texas Tech 6 solid innings and 11 freaking strikeouts. Robert Kilcrease (1.1 IP; 2 H; 3 R; 0 ER; 2 BB; 0 SO) allowed the game to get a lot closer than the Red Raiders wanted, but freshman Louis Head (1.2 IP; 1 H; 0 ER; 1 BB; 3 SO) got his first save of his career. The offense was equally good, with an RBI from 7 different Red Raiders -- Michael Reed (0-2; 1 RBI); Joey Kenworthy (2-4; 1 RBI); Chris Richburg (1-4; 1 RBI); Scott LeJeune (2-5; 1 RBI); Taylor Ashby (3-4; 1 RBI); Justin Berry (2-4; 1 RBI); Jeremy Mayo (1-3; 1 RBI); and Garrett Totten (0-3; 1 RBI).

Being from Midland it was great to watch the Red Raiders play without taking a long drive somewhere. The night cap was very exciting although our bullpen did give up quite a lead in the 8th. It was great to see the guys hang tough and shut UTSA down in the 9th. We have a very young team and I expect much bigger things from these kids in the future. It was also a great night for the family to be out rooting for Tech. Hope to see many of you at the Spring game next weekend.
