NFL draft: Searching for 'The Next Tom Brady'

Graham Harrell, Texas Tech

Why he'll stay on the board: He has average arm strength and lacks a big frame. It's tough to tell whether he can improve his arm strength, like Brady could and Ken Dorsey couldn't. After playing in shotgun at Tech, he struggled with dropback footwork in workouts.

Why he should come off it: Like Brady, he is accurate and polished in the pocket and possesses every intangible such as how to attack defenses.

Draft forecast: Round 6 or 7.

I feel the same as does Mike Leach

If the pros are worth a darn, they can teach ANYONE the nuances of dropping back from center. Harrell may appear to have ‘average’ arm strength, but he sure makes a lot of throws accurately, some being the hardest for a QB to throw, towards the sidelines and upfield. Also, as far as arm strength goes, if my little brother improved his arm strength in high school over 40 years ago, I am sure the pros know all about how to do so as well. That is another very lame excuse. He “lacks a big frame”…?? Johnnie U., Tom Brady, Roger Staubach and many more had smaller frames. At least they did get it right about his intelligence, accuracy and other intangibles. One of those intangibles is his ability to lead a team to victory at crunch time in minimal time. This guy says Harrell is projected to go in round 6 or 7. I don’t expect him to last that long, probably going in round 3 or 4, only because the NFL scouts are idiots.

Graham is fighting perception as much as he’s fighting physical limitations right now. This just affects which round he’ll go in, but he’ll get his shot to prove everyone wrong – that’s the upside. Right or wrong, any Tech QB who isn’t prototypical in measurables will fight the perception battle until someone, like Harrell, steps up and does more than just make a team. Let’s hope Graham’s NFL success turns the perception from one of skepticism to one of optimism when it comes to QBs from Tech.
