DTN's Best of Lubbock // Poll for Best Mexican Food

DTN's Best of Lubbock: I have no idea how well this is going to go over, but the point of all of this is to get it straight from you guys as to the Best of Lubbock. This will serve as a guide to Big 12 fans who visit Lubbock. We'll have one each week, with the first part of the week being reader submissions and at the end of the week, I'll compile the most talked about suggestions and make a poll.
DTN Poll: Best Mexican Food
I've taken your comments and from earlier this week and today we put it to a vote. Who has the best Mexican food in Lubbock (in no particular order): Taqueria Jalisco; Rosa's Cafe; Chimy's; Josie's; Abuelo's; Ruby Tequila's; Lone Wolf; Picante's.

I wouldn't consider Abuelos
a “chain” restaurant. It’s not like we’re talking about McDonalds here. On top of it all, Abuelos is based in Lubbock.
There are abuelo's here in Austin.
= chain. Just my opinion. Also, Lone Wolf sucks.
¡Viva los Matadores!
11 in texas, 30 others nationally in 15 total states. I’d say that was a chain.
Rosas is a chain too, starting in san angelo.
Chimy’s at least can only be found in one other city.
Abuelos is everywhere…i go to cincinatti all the time for work and there is one there. The people up there pour chili over spaghetti and their bbq takes like ketchup mix with pancake syrup. Of course, they think Abuelo’s is the best too.
Take the chains off the list….stick with the Lubbock favorites.
Take Rosa’s off as well. Might as well put Taco Cabana on there.
this is my first
attempt at this, so i’ll make sure that non-chain eateries are submitted next time (i.e., work in progress).

I just wonder if somehow a distinction has to be made between the “best” place in Lubbock to eat Mexican food at from a favorite place you (you meaning anyone here) went to while you were in school. I’ve been to every place on the above list, most many times, and if I were to choose I would still choose Abuelos as the best. Just because people in Cincinnati think Abuelo’s is great doesn’t take away from the fact it has good food in Lubbock.
I guess the point I’m trying to make is I don’t think Abuelos should be removed because they have locations all over the state and country. Like I said above, Abuelos is based in Lubbock (check out their website) which in my opinion makes them as qualified as any of the others.
Also, I assume most of the people who visit DTN either went to Tech or have lived in Lubbock and have probably been to most of the places listed above. If (well currently) the majority of people think it’s the best in Lubbock then why should we take it off the list just because other people want Chimy’s or Rosa’s to win. The best restaurant should be the best of all available restaurants, not just the best of a hand picked sample. I hope that makes a little sense. I’m also thinking of all the people who haven’t been to Lubbock who might read these recommendations before coming to games from other schools. An alternative would be to list maybe 2 or 3 places under each category and describe what they have to offer. For example Chimy’s offers a wide selection of Mexican beers, margaritas, and cheap mexican food (nachos, quesadillas and fish tacos) at reasonable prices (even though their margaritas have become expensive, $7 for a margarita in Lubbock is high).
my point is that if it’s to serve as a guide for people visiting lubbock, it should include things that you can only get in lubbock. Abuelos may be the best mexican food in lubbock, but it isn’t something that you should come to lubbock to enjoy.
It’s about like putting up a poll about what is the best fast food burger in lubbock and listing off McDonalds, Whataburger, Burger King, Wendy’s and not Jack in the Box. (And by they way, the best fast food burger is Bonus Burger, 50th and University)
Wow!!!
Abuelo’s…..really? That place has been around longer than most of all those places? I went to tech 86-90.
Wreck 'em, Tech!
let’s just say this, if you were watching a show on the food network and some chef/tv personality i.e. Rachel Ray decides to come through lubbock for the best Mexican….my guess is they would not come to Albuelos or any chain.
You all ever watch the Saturday night college games on ESPN…..Todd Blackledge does this Taste of the Town deal where he visits a nice eatery in that college town and shows what the locals eat. That’s where i can see people wanting to know what the local favorites are….
+2
I’m from Southwest Texas near the border. I never liked the Mex food in LBK all that much. It was hard for me to find good ‘interior’ Mex food there. That’s one good thing about Austin……great Mexican eateries, all over town. I’m a RHIM guy, so I really love that. Great Tex-Mex is good, but I like ‘real’ Mexican dishes like Cochinita de Pibil, Cabrito de Maguey, good Caldo de Camarones y Pescado, etc., etc.
¡Viva los Matadores!
I haven’t found many good mexican places (from the valley, mostly we have “jalisco style” restaurants down there) here yet. Used to like El Arroyo the most, but they raised their prices and the quality of their food dropped. La Tapatia is hit or miss on taste.
Not much else on the north side that I’ve found.
I agree about Lubbock’s Mex food. Even most of the hole in the wall places around Lubbock all taste the same. I lived in El Paso for 6 years and the food there and in southern NM, like Las Cruces, is in a completely different class (although some of it is absolutely horrible if you wander into the wrong joint). Of course the food is definitely not enough to make me move back to EP, but it is one of the only reasons to visit.
Im from EP
The Mexican food there runs laps around anything in LBK or ATX. (obviously I’m biased) I prefer EP’s “border style” Mexican food, and there is nothing like it in Austin. Up North in Austin, if you like “interior” food, try Fonda San Miguel. It’s really good, but people from EP refuse to pay $20 for enchiladas when we know we can get better food for $4.99 in EP.
in my time in LBK, i've had these observations...
I voted against Josies because they charge for chips and salsa. No self respecting Mexican place can do that. Also, the breakfast burritos are awful (even by drunk 3 am standards). My friends were telling me how great that place was and I was so disappointed. Honestly, Taco Cabana or any chain late night place is better.
I voted for Ruby Tequilas. last time I went, they had 99 cent Dos XX and that sealed the deal. The food was okay, for a chain, but I’ve had Jalisco and another place by the mall (Case Ole?) and Ruby Tex was better. Chimy’s is a unique place, I’ve had beers there but never eaten….. great crowd the time I went but I was bummed because it closed at midnight or 11… fun night…..
Chains?
Come on…
Abuelos is a home town resturant it was BORN in Lubbock the fact that it is popular and they where able to spread out and multiply should not be held against them.
Also Rubys was founded in Amarillo and the 2nd Resturant in the chain was in Lubbock..
Not really a chain resturant there. yea they are growing too But come on. These are panhandle resturants from our region.
They are both good when it comes to Mex food and fairly priced.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.
I tend to agree about Abuelo's
Most old school Dallasites would agree that El Fenix is top notch, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rec them to an out of towner, even though the Martinez family has prospered by the fruit of their labor by having tens of locations after 80+ years.
Glad Most People Don't Know This Place
MONTELONGO’S-have you ever gone for Mexican food and noticed all the customers are Mexicans. This voting list is strictly for gringos and I’m one of them, but I do know where to find GOOD Mexican food. By the way I did note vote.
Where is Montelongo's?
I was trying to remember this divey little place we used to go to…. I think that’s it! I can’t even remember where it was… Seemed like it was kind of northwest, near one of the highways and some overpass…??? My memory is shot… But whatever this place was, it was good basic mexican food…
