DTN's Best of Lubbock: Need Assistance
I'm working on moving to bars and somesuch for the next couple of weeks and needed some help defining what I am going to feature. Any help or additional or better categories is much appreciated. Ideas:
Best Hole In The Wall Bar: I'm thinking that the definition of a "hole-in-the-wall" bar must be something to the effect of must not have a dance floor and must not play techno and/or dance music. Other than that, I'm not sure what else to define this category.
Best Bar To Watch A Game: This one is pretty self-explanatory, although I didn't know if we needed any other sort of requirement.
Best Singles Bar: I haven't been to a singles bar since I've been married. I'm not going to be any help here, but I'm sure you guys can assist.
Any other bars that need to be addressed? Don't worry about suggesting any places right now, that will start on Monday, I just need to make sure that I've properly defined the three categories right now and if you have any other suggestions.

Not sure
how you would do it in a poll setup, but it might be cool to categorize some of the bars by the crowd that hangs out there. For example, Bash’s is a great hole in the wall place that is mainly frequented by college kids, while Cricket’s is great for all ages, and I’m sure there are a number of Cowboy bars. Like I said, not sure how you would do that with polls, but it might be nice for visitors to have a feel for what bar they might fit in best at.
I thought about
that too (i.e. by people), but I didn’t want to stereotype or I didn’t know if it was appropriate. I’m still trying to figure this out.

I dunno if i’d say, “singles” bar.
Maybe go with 3 categories: Hole-in-the-wall (or maybe just call it a Pub? Pretty much every actual bar (ie not dance club) would fall under this category), College Bar (Mostly the depot district bars), Sports bar (your best bar to watch a game at).
2 optional categories: Best place to get drunk (ie cheap booze, decent surroundings), and best place to catch a show (if there’s one in town).
The best
country & western, hip-hop, rock, jazz, R&B, piano, juke box, combo dine & dance, college crowd, older crowd….. I guess you could have a bunch of different categories, but kayakyakr is probably right, less is best. Then, leave it to the patrons to find the best fit for them. You can’t decide for everyone. They have to make their own determinations after being given a direction or category to check out. For instance, ten people who like country may all have different ideas which one, two or three clubs are the best-for them. And so on… Three or four categories would be good enough to showcase the better establishments, though. My guess would be Dance, Chug-a-lug-pub, Sports and Alternatives. Good luck. I am sure you will do a great job either way, Seth.

I see a small problem
in that a lot of the places people may have liked while they were in school are not the same place they remember it being. I would say everyone should have visited the place they’re recommending within the past few years to make sure it’s still the bar/club/drinking hole they remember.
I think something simple and along the lines of what you have would be:
Best Bar – any and all, for whatever reason and see what comes up…
Best Night Life – again, whatever comes up…
Best Place to Watch a Ball Game – could be a bar, restaurant, some public screen somewhere, whatever…
Then, if the summer gets too long, you could try:
Best Ice Cold Beer
Best Draught Beer (I like beer…)
Best Wine Bar (are there any?)
Best Mixed Drinks (won’t be on my list…)
etc.
By then we’ll all be crying for football season to start….
Is Bash Riprock's still around?
and I remember the cheap hotel (Days Inn or Motel 6) bar across the street from the stadium. It had no name so we called it The Plaid Door for its awesome carpet clad door.

Thanks for the suggestions -
simple is good and let the good bars battle it out.
