DTN's Best of Lubbock // Reader Submissions for Bar

DTN's Best of Lubbock
I have no idea how well this is going to go over, but the point of all of this is to get it straight from you guys as to the Best of Lubbock. This will serve as a guide to Big 12 fans who visit Lubbock. We'll have one each week, with the first part of the week being reader submissions and at the end of the week, I'll compile the most talked about suggestions and make a poll.
A couple of groundrules for best hamburger and probably the remainder of these features. The submissions must NOT be on this list of national chain restaurants or this list of fast food restaurants. If given enough time during the off-season, we'll have a battle of the chain restaurant. I know that everyone may not agree with this decision, but I would think that the point of this is that you know what kind of steak you're going to get at Outback Steakhouse, but you need some one from Lubbock to tell you about the steak at Cagle Steaks and whether it's worth your time. If there's enough protest over excluding one or another, then I'll make an exception.
DTN Reader Submissions: Best Bar
So let's hear from you, where's the best place to get your drink-on in Lubbock? This needs to be current places and not as you remembered them 10 years ago. The poll will be submitted on Friday.

Categories?
I don’t remember if you decided on categories Seth but I’ll throw in two.
Best overall bar atmosphere with massive selection of beer – Crickets
Best for girl watching – Chimy’s
After thinking about it
I decided not to do the categories for best bar. I kinda got the feeling that folks would submit actual bars and then let the best ones rise to the top.
Agreed about Chimy’s. I went there after a game last year and there were a ton of girls, but also just a ton of people. Made it a little difficult to get around.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
Murphy's Pub on Slide
I really like being there on Tuesday nights during the live jazz sets

Cujo's Sportz Bar & Grill
Sports, beer and good looking girls… what else do you need? They actually have really good food, too. Awesome pizza.
Rocky LaRues
Located right on Broadway across from campus they have great bartenders, live music, and cheap beer.

Spent a lot of time in the fox and hound. hated it. chain bars >:[. (don’t put that up there. on the plus side, they actually give you refills on the chips and salsa).
I’d suggest schooner’s if they’d actually update their TV’s to HDTV and their air circulation system so that you could breath in there. And got rid of their karaoke dj.
Definitely
My favorite for just about any occasion. Spent a lot of time there while at Tech!
I think Caprock is the best local restaurant.....
Would succeed outside of LBK,. Good menu, and love the “bottle caps” and burgers.
I will always have a special place in my heart for Schooner's.
But also, Recovery Room, Cujo’s, Cricket’s, and last but definitely least, Adolph’s. haha
¡Viva los Matadores!
Good Call
…and the Bullet right next door!

Chalk up
another vote for Cricket’s. It doesn’t have much seating, but it is a great place to go stand and have a beer and play some pool/shuffleboard (free on Sundays). Nice bar/non-dancing club atmosphere for no cover.
Have to go with..
Crickets.
Now I will say I do you go Buffalo Wild Wings when in town for games and I love that place as well but it’s a chain of course.
BW3's in LBK is nuts
the one on 6th in Austin was a Dead Zone, the one in LBK is the place to be. Had some good times there and the waitresses provided some great scenery. It is a chain, but is unusually popular in LBK,. I think its great.
Lack of options. It’s the same way at the BW3 in my hometown: there’s just nothing else that really fits that sort of atmosphere. In Austin you’ve got pluckers, 3rd base, etc etc. And with Austin’s already ingrained aversion to “chain” restaurants (one reason why I like this city), well, there’s not much going for it.
I'll toss out a few good watering holes...
1. Bash’s (great drink specials and location with pool, darts, and a good beer selection)
2. Cujo’s (best sports bar)
3. The Gas Light
4. Mesquites (best beer/food combo place) and best interior appeal IMO.
5. Triple J Chophouse- local brewery with great food
Crickets is a chain, isn’t it? Not sure but I swear I have been to one in the Metroplex somewhere.
I was in LBK last weekend and went to a new place called Fuzzy’s. They had awesome fish tacos, really recommend it and it was near campus.
I love Mesquites for a chicken fried steak lunch on sunday before hitting the road. I’ve never been there at night so I can’t really say what it’s bar atmosphere is like.
To a point, I think this is a category that you can ignore the “no chains” rule considering that the atmosphere of each bar varies so much from town to town. It’s like you mentioned for BW3 above: it’s unreasonably popular in Lubbock and that improves the atmosphere over other places.
It's very laid back, a good place if you want room and the ability to have a conversation
with cheap beer (and Shiner on tap). I definitely agree with your points on BW3’s and its popularity in Lubbock. I know if I want to catch a UFC fight/boxing match or game at a bar in Lubbock, BW3’s is definitely the most exciting atmosphere.
guys guys guys....
less we forget $2 pint nights and a WIDE variety of beers, i feel i should submit Fox and the Hound… favorite place and i go there every thursday with my friends :)
Wreck 'Em Tech!
J.T.H.
As much as I love F+H
They have them in Wichita, Tulsa, the City, etc… Doesn’t really help a KU alum taste Lubbock’s flavor.
Side Note:
I forgot, but Seth may want to reminde people not from Lubbock, that most of the resturants in city limits are smoking free. Not many cities are like that. And this doesn’t pertain to bars of course.
Something I had to adjust to when i left lubbock (asking for nonsmoking section)
"56,000 screaming crazies in The Jones rockin' as it has never rocked before" - Terry Bowden
If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.
Hands down Crickets
Beer selection is probably one of the best in town, bar games are fun and kept in good condition… AND its close enough to grab a few pints in between classes.
I am an old fart......
there is no doubt. I like to go back to places that were around in the 80’s…..going to either O bar is so damn natural. I logged in many hours at both locales…..you can’t beat them. Jazz is still there…right? Monday nights after chapter meeting…like clockwork. Mesquites for Bloody Mary’s and Beer Garden for everything else.
I have since been to other places, and thought the gaslamp and other places were fun. After much consideration…..I vote for either O bar. You walk in and 7 hours later you leave. FYI, don’t try the Dirty Larry shot.

The tough thing is there are very few “adult” bars in Lubbock. I mean bars that don’t cater to college kids. It would be tough if I lived out there these days. I went to Chimy’s and Crickets last fall and felt like the weird old dude we used to get creeped out by when I was a student. The scenery and talent haven’t changed a bit, though ; )
