DTN's Best of Lubbock // Reader Submissions for Best Hamburger

DTN's Best of Lubbock: I have no idea how well this is going to go over, but the point of all of this is to get it straight from you guys as to the Best of Lubbock. This will serve as a guide to Big 12 fans who visit Lubbock. We'll have one each week, with the first part of the week being reader submissions and at the end of the week, I'll compile the most talked about suggestions and make a poll.
DTN Reader Submissions: Best Hamburger
A couple of ground rules for best hamburger and probably the remainder of these features. The submissions must NOT be on this list of national chain restaurants or this list of fast food restaurants. If given enough time during the off-season, we'll have a battle of the chain restaurants. I know that everyone may not agree with this decision, but I would think that the point of this is that you know what kind of steak you're going to get at Outback Steakhouse, but you need some one from Lubbock to tell you about the steak at Cagle Steaks and whether it's worth your time. If there's enough protest over excluding one restaurant, then I'll make an exception.
So let's hear from you, where's the best place to get a hamburger in Lubbock? The poll will be will be based on your submissions today and will be posted on Friday.

Spanky's
If you’re coming to Lubbock, you simply have to try the He-Man Woman Hater or All-Techsan Burger with an order of fried cheese. You can’t go wrong with Spanky’s for burgers!
I second Spank's
Love Spanky’s burgers, every time I go back to Lubbock, I have to get me some Spanky’s!
Absolutely….Spanky’s
But whatever happened to Ted’s 99ยข Burgers on University just north of the Stadium? My bet is that its gone

No it is over off ave A now down where all the warehouses are. I put it on mine, but I put toms instead of teds. my mistake
In my day Spanky’s was #1. I dont know about now. Ted’s was definitely an inexpensive #2. The 1/4 burger with fries and a coke was $5.40

Pete's Drive In (#4)
Pete’s has the best toasted bun, and they never once came up short weighing their burgers!
Bonus burger. Like a better, cheaper whataburger and one of the few holdovers from the age without credit (note: do not know if they still don’t take credit).
Suggest the chilli cheesebuger for artery stopping power.
ps: found one of the best burgers in Austin at this dive-bar to be (give it 10-15 years to get that good, run down feeling) at Riata Bar and Grill (off of Riata Trace by the Riata Apartments (notice the trend?)). I have to question if they form their patties or use frozen and what meat they’re using due to how neatly cylindrical the patty was, but I can’t argue with how good that burger tasted. Downside: I think they water their drinks. My Dr. Pepper was brown fizzy water. $2 pints, but I bet those are 50% post-brew water as well.
kayak, you been to Casino El Camino?
Highly, highly recommend it. IMO the best burger in Austin. In the LBK I will toss out Caprock Cafe’s Green Chile Cheeseburger (with a Buffalo meat patty, of course and some bottle caps).
Spank’s will win in a landslide, but Caprock deserves a mention. Also, IMO the best “miscellaneous/random” food item in Lubbock has to be the Fried Cheese at Spanky’s. Not sure if you guys have a category for that.
Johnny's
There used to be a hamburger joint on Idalou Hwy. called Johnny’s, many years ago. I think it may still be there under a different name. Not sure. But, it was the greasy burger eater’s delight. They formed the patty there, it was not pre-made. They put on all the stuff-lettuce, onions, pickles and MUSTARD. NO BURGER IS A BURGER IF IT DOES NOT HAVE MUSTARD! If the stand, which was just north of where Broadway intersected Idalou Hwy., is still there and still makes that burger, try it. You will savor it for sure.

I vote for....
Char-King …..oops, I think I just dated myself……… They just don’t make em like they used too……..

George's
Not sure if it is still there on 4th, but even the top of the buns were greasy. Had the best tater-tots as well. But, any burger at Spanky’s with the fried cheese sticks is a very close second…maybe 1 and 1a.
without a doubt.......
SPANKY’S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
best burger, cheese sticks, fries and onion rings in town. It’s a Lubbock staple, EVERYone who goes to Tech knows about Spanky’s. It’s the only place in town to go for a fantastic burger.

Spanky's
Best burger, across from campus, and the cheese sticks are just great.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.
Bar PM
Directly across from campus. Most people don’t know that it’s open for lunch, but it is, without any question whatsoever, the best burger in Lubbock. Not only are they really unique, with a gourmet-caliber array of buns and dressings, but every weekday there’s a different one on special for 5 bucks. The fries and jalapeno bottlecaps are great too. Seriously, this poll is over. Anybody who’s ever had a burger at Bar PM agrees.
I've never had a burger
there, but now that you’ve described it, I want a burger and I had a hamburger Friday, Saturday and Sunday (that’s right). I can’t figure out why I wanted to do hamburgers today. In any event, I’m definitely going to check out Bar PM the next time I’m in Lubbock.

Spanky’s had some good burgers, and was a tradition being across from the stadium for game days, but really my surprise pick here would be Skooner’s! This place had ‘The Burger to Beat All Burgers’ … and it was just that, to this day it is probably the biggest and tastiest burger I have ever eaten (they even made special buns in house for this mammoth burger). Even friends that had come to visit HAD to go have the burger to beat all burgers when they came into town… to this day it is still the stuff of legends even here in Houston.
SI's Peter King defended Graham Harrel today in MMQB
Excerpt:
I’m not measuring arm strength, obviously. But I’m dead serious when I ask this question: If Joe Montana, who was a third-round pick 30 years ago, came out today, how many teams would declare him either undraftable or a free-agent only?
My humble advice (and I mean that; I don’t study college tape at all) to those who make their living grading college football players: Watch the games.
Anyway, thought I’d pass that on…… and to make this post burger related, I’m pleased to see nobody has nominated a chain. The first person to say Fuddruckers should be banned.
Oh, someone should nominate Cujo’s too. Good bar food (only been once but the burger was solid).
I'm going with Jumbo Joe's.
Great burger. Spanky’s is also great. I also always liked to split that huge Skooner’s burger with someone.
ยกViva los Matadores!
Back in the day (80s-90s), there was a place off of 27th and Ave Q called Alex’s Burgers. It may still be there, but they were fantastic…had at least one a week for years. Big burger, hand made, tons of lettuce, tomato’s were always ripe, wickedly tart dill pickles and the mustard had a neat zing to it.
if nothing else...
I’m glad we’re doing this because now i’ve heard of places i probably never would have gone to before, rather they win or not, i’m probably gonna try then while i’m in Lubbock.
It would be cool if like in the final throw together of all this stuff we kept the lists of nominated places. did like somethin’ like…
The Winner is: Spanky’s (even if it’s actually Jumbo Joe’s)
other nominations:
My burger : ave $ and 1millionth st.
so on and so forth
also to note… I <3 food! :)

Ditto, but if I’m voting for a place I want a Colorado alum to try, Spanky’s for the burger, beer, dumbwaiter, balcony, bag A cheese sticks, proximity to Jones.
I’m voting for this place now because there may not be a category: Choo Chi Thia. 19th + University Volcano soup will clear your sinuses.
I'm thinking
best pizza/Italian food; Asian food; post-game bar; best bar; best bar food (like the O-bar or Spanky’s fried cheese or Bar PM), etc. If you have any other suggestions for categories, please feel free to comment.

I'd like a list of the top five in each category when all is said and done...there are several of these places I've never been to.
Even a few I’ve never heard of…and I live right here in Plainview:)
Seth
By the way, where will the final lists be posted? It would be nice for all winners and at least the top 3 or 4 runners-up to be shown on each item-specific list in a format so it can be printed up to take with you when you visit the Hub. Thanks for the opportunity to forge a listing like this. This will make visiting there even better, seeking out and never trying the same place twice over a course of several visits—-fat city, USA here we come….yum, yum……

Might also want to add
breakfast joints.

Only BBQ place that's ever been good in LBK wasn;t even a restaurant
It’s this late night stand right down in the depot, you pay cash for a sausage wrap or brisket taco and it is truly a beautiful thing. Don’t know the name, but it was excellent after a night out.
hmmmmm
with everyone agreeing with me that there isn’t any good BBQ in Lubbock, maybe i should open my own joint! i make the best BBQ i’ve eaten!!! yall will have to try at a tailgate sometime! :)
any investors?!?!?!?!? :)

So True
But to an outsider it would be very hard to believe there is literally squat for good BBQ in Lubbock! When my East Coast friends come to Houston, they always want BBQ and there are great venues (Goode Co, Pizzitola’s) – if they visited me in Lubbock, we’d have nowhere to go and be ashamed if we did!
Some possible categories..
Best Hole in the Wall, Best Late Night Spot, Best Single Plate, Best Wings, and what about Worst Local Restaurant so that out of towners can know for sure where not to go? Anyway, I spend lots of time in LBK, pumped to try some of these places (especially the burger ones from this thread).
Dude Josies sucks.
Sorry, but it sucks. That’s really the only way to describe it. Whataburger is a better late night option. That’s part of the reason why I wanted a late night category, I thought I was missing something but kayak set me straight.
wasn't sayin' it was good
just sayin’ it was another 24 hour place
i will say that how good their tamales are is proportional to the amount of alcohol ingested prior to consumption… i remember having some REALLY good tamales there one night… but i think drank like .750 of jack that night too…

All good suggestions.
We’re doing this for fans of opposing teams and although you are in Lubbock more than not, we’re glad to help.

I know I already voted but...
I think as a second place runner up I’d have to say Christaki Burger on 50th and right off 27/87. I’m surprised no one has mentioned it yet. Any love for Christaki Burger from the Lubbockites?
Best Burger
You got to include the Green-Chili Cheeseburgers (regular & huge) from the Cooper Drive-In at 1102 FM 1585 with their handmade, breaded onion rings & a big chocolate malt with maybe the fried pickles. Lots of pickup trucks & dirt parking lot but that just tells you where you are; and the Strip is on the way and back. Must be one of the reasons Cooper HS baseball is still huge.
Caprock Cafe
Caprock has some solid burgers…plus good happy hour deals. The one on 34th and Indiana is solid but they just opened up a new one on 82nd and Slide that is starting to grow in popularity.
