Athlon Sport Big 12 & Lindy's 2009 Preview says we fall ...

[Note by Seth C, 06/13/09 9:25 AM CDT ]  Promoted to the front page.  Good work.

Just got thru reading the  Athlon and Lindys Football magazines as always good stuff. But generally says as expected our  Norman and Austin  neighbors are going to own the Big 12.

Both magazines use a team  rating system to rank order the units on the teams  BUF TTU was never higher than  # 4in the league. Here’s the break out  by rating magazine:  Lindys   Quarterbacks we are # 6, Running Backs  # 8, Receivers #4, Offensive line # 8, Defensive line #6, Line backers # 7, Secondary #7, and Special Teams #12 ???(Looking bad)

In the Athlon magazine they use a Top units format  and as  far as that goes  - QB’s  Oklahoma,  Running Backs OU, Receivers OU, Off. Line  Texas, Def Line  OU, Linebackers OU, Def Backs OU. Hmm…

For the unit ratings  getting specific Athlon rates us- the team -  the following in  the Big 12  QB #6, RB # 7, WR/TE # 6(What the …?) OL #6, DL # 5 (that looks good) LB #5 , DB #4(a  good surprise).

Now my interest is really peaked to see how Dave Campbell’s Texas Football  writes us up. Oh yeah and we are mired at being #4 in the South Division.. again..

Folks I am not buying it.  Momentum  Baby, momentum…

I don't buy it, either

But, if you were they, you would probably have very similar outcomes. It just goes to show you, no one outside Raiderland gives us as much respect as WE think they should. My belief is that we could wind up tied for 2nd place or 3rd place in the South. it all depends on how well the team responds following such a great year. I think, because of the way we finished, 1-2 in our final 3 games, the team will be strongly motivated to show the world that we are a much better team than that indicates. So, I think we have the personnel, attitude and desire to be very successful again. WRECK ’EM!

Oklahoma, Texas and Oklahoma State should have better seasons than us, all things considered. We could go 9-3 and still end up in fourth, honestly.

The big surprise to me is that you said we are ranked #8 at the RB position. That’s just ignorant by the magazine.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

Could be...

…number 8 or worse in running yardage (especially since we emphasize the passing game) but that doesn’t mean seven other teams have better running backs than we do.

I think a #4 prediction is wholly fair considering what the other teams have coming back. It’s not a knock on Tech as much as it is recognition of what the other guys are bringing. I would have a hard time justifying predicting anything above a third place finish. It will come down to if we can handle OSU in Stillwater. Recent home team history say’s it will be a big challenge. If we can, than third sounds right. I see no logical reason to think we beat both UT and OU this year beyond blind homerism. We aren’t that weak by any stretch, but they ARE that strong.

by Tech92 on Jun 13, 2009 10:57 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

We shall see

All these rankings are good for us to get the football juices flowing and all but we have to see what happens when the games actually start. A lot of things can change quickly, be it through injuries or just a good ol fashioned meltdown. Don’t let these numbers fool you, we all know that we will be in the hunt in the South this year.

by mattyred80 on Jun 13, 2009 12:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

if you're willing to say with a straight face that you think you can beat texas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State this season

then I’ll listen to your argument abouty why a ranking of 4th in the South is unfair.

Otherwise, many people are picking those three teams among to top 10 in the nation. It isn’t disrespect for Tech as much as it is recognition of how strong the Big 12 South has become.

Those unit rankings are a lot higher than I would rank your QB, OL, DL, and LBs. I thnk they were quite generous, especially since you lost your starting QB. I think Potts has looked good in backup action, but you still don’t know how he will do as a starter. I think that ranking has more to do with the media’ belief in the system and how Leach can plug-and-play QBs and get similar results, even with mediocre talent.

by Beergut on Jun 13, 2009 4:48 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It's not about being unfairly ranked

It’s about us always being underestimated. With last year as the lone exception, Texas Tech is consistently picked to finish the season just slightly better than Baylor, and consistently Tech finishes higher than expectations. Personally I prefer being the underdog, and I’m sure Mike Leach uses these predictions as billboard materiel, but what upsets me most is the reason for the disparity.

All Many sports reporters are just lazy. Rather than do their jobs and visit Lubbock every once in a while, they’ll sit at their desk and make the ‘safe’ choice. After all, who do they piss off? Just some redneck hicks in the dust blown panhandle, right?

by Campeador on Jun 13, 2009 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually

I think last season and in ‘05, y’all were picked to do pretty well. Both years, you had a weak non-conference schedule that gave you a shot at a fast start.

You can’t blame the media for not picking Tech too high in the past; Tech’s habit of bad losses in non-conference or conference play always made those picking them look foolish. Remember New Mexico 2004? Oklahoma State 2005? TCU 2006? Colorado 2007?

Given the way Tech played in the last three games of the season in ’08, I think picking you fourth is predictable, and somewhat generous.

Whoa

You stated “if you’re willing to say with a straight face that you think you can beat texas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State this season then I’ll listen to your argument abouty (sic) why a ranking of 4th in the South is unfair.”

But Texas Tech finished tied for first in the South last year and didn’t win all three.

We know Bevo or Okie Max or Okie Light will have at least one loss. Perhaps all three may have one or more losses. The Raiders won’t have to beat all three to finish better than 4th in the South. Tech can beat any one of those three, even two of the three. Whether they will or not is yet to be seen. Not one Big 12 game is going to be a “gimme” for the Raiders, but nobody better look past them either.

I don’t have a problem with the Raiders being picked 4th. Last year was their year. This year the onus is on them to produce a successful season.

TCU in 2006 was not a “bad loss,” not one we wanted, but not a bad loss. They had a pretty good team. They got better as the year went on, lost only to BYU and Utah and beat Northern Ill 37-7 in the Poinsettia Bowl.

by Bornlaser on Jun 14, 2009 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you obviously didn't watch the '06 Tech-TCU game

it was beyond hideous.

Those losses to BYU and Utah came right after they beat Tech, and that Northern Illinois team had no defense. You’re really going to claim TCU is good b/c they beat a MAC team in a minor bowl? I think we have different definitions of what makes a good team.

As for the Big 12 South rankings, do you think all four of Oklahoma, texas, Tech, and Oklahoma State are going to drop games to each other? I would hesitate to use last year as a basis for your argument considering nothing like that (a three-way tie in division play) had happened before in Big 12 history.

Final Rankings after 2006 Season

22 AP Poll
21 USA Today Poll

Obviously somebody thought TCU was pretty good. If you’re going to call something a “bad loss”, it’s not a 9 point loss to a top 25 team. At the time it looked like it because everyone was surprised as to how successful TCU would be that season. Was it a bad GAME for Texas Tech, yeah. Almost kept scoreless for the first time in how many months?

I think picking you fourth is predictable, and somewhat generous.

Predictable, yes, but generous…absolutely not.

by techtom4 on Jun 14, 2009 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

think of it like this

5 teams in the Big 12 South return their QB; Tech is the odd team out.

Tech lost their starting QB, star WR, their whole pass rush, suffered big losses on the OL, and lost some players in their secondary.

Add to this that the media is trending up on Baylor, and is not made up of Tech fans who have full-faith in Mike Leach and his system to keep churning out winners, and you don’t think this is a generous ranking from the media?

FWIW, I think the media is overrating OU (they lost a lot on the OL) and texas (last year’s team overachieved, and they lost a lot of the leaders that created the chemistry to make it possible). I look at texas, and see a team with no secondary, no RB, and without the stud DE who made their pass rush (and defense) go.

Oklahoma State needs to find a WR to compliment Dez Bryant now that Pettigrew is gone. Bill Young should shore up their defense, though.

However, Tech has more question marks than any of those three teams, so a ranking of fourth, at best, is to be expected. Given that many media pundits think Bahylor will be much improved, you can say it is generous.

OK..

Yes I remember UNM in 04… I was actually not upset with that loss. Maybe because they were due up one on Tech in like 20 something years. So yeah, that loss was ok in my book. The Lobos had only 1 blowout loss and that was against the 12-0 Fiesta Bowl Champs, the Utah Utes. So a Loss against a team that went 5-2 in the MWC, i feel isnt a bad loss. Like i said, they were due one sooner or later on Tech.

TCU…Bornlaser said enough on that topic. CU in 07, yeah that costly 4th INT by Harrell lost the game… that one was frustrating, but the Buffs did beat OU, whom also lost against the Red Raiders.

Now OSU in 05… yeah dont have a rebuttal for that one. That was one pathetic game by the Red Raiders. 0-10 on 3rd down conversions yet still had the opportunity to win the game… only lost by a TD. Yeah i tried to throw some cinnamin and sugar on that one… didnt work out too well… DAMMIT!!!!

Someone's not doing their homework......

How can Tech hire one of the top Special Teams Coach that has consistently produced top tier special teams units from schools like North Texas and La. Tech and then rank Tech 12th in special teams for the Conference.

I just don’t get it.

Personnel…we have a terrible, TERRIBLE kicking game as far as FGs and PATs. Our punter is only slightly better. Not sure the best kicking coach in the world can make a bad kicker good. It’s ability they are looking at…we may improve on field position on returns, but I don’t look for a huge improvement overall in STs. I would use caution when extolling the virtues of UNT and LaTech as a basis for improvement ; )

by Tech92 on Jun 14, 2009 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

funny

What is funny is when will anyone outside of TECH football realise that loosing a QB and WR(and Harrell and Crabtree were exceptional I would agree) does not instantly mean a loss of power to the offence.

That is what makes Leach a master mind of offensive strategy. He always has the knack to get his QB executing no matter what experience they have and executing quickly. That is why I say Potts will be ready for TEXAS. The defense is not to far off the mark from last year. There are players to replace, but I only see grit, blood and desires to win carried over from last year.Just wait and see.

Update to the Athlon/ Lindys 09 post

Enjoyed the banter folks . Even you Beergut .. generous..4th in the South… it won’t happen my friend. The momentum to overwhelm, out last and outperform the other Universities in the Big12 is blowing in favor of the Raider nation. The O line will be solid. Or put it this way the O line is better than 10 of the 12 D-lines we w ill face. The Skill positions look to be more balanced than last year. Ie touches spread around no one position or player can be isolated. The star can’t be identified and double teamed. The run game is set to be a significant improvement. Linebackers are set – solid not flashy. Secondary will be better than average. Again they will be better than 10 of the 12 sets of receiver/ QB’s we face. D-line is going to surprise folks expect some run stuffing on people/teams who aren’t used to having their backs shoved into the blockers. Special teams will excel – the only area not making a quantum improvement is/are FG’s from outside 40 yards. I.e. we just haven’t seen it demonstrated yet. Expect kick coverage and return teams to dial it up another notch. It’s inconceivable that the team will slip backwards – I ask what has changed the preparation? The scheme? The coaching staff ? The strength and conditioning regime? Not one area has varied at all. Given the Leach teams propensity to get first downs, operate from the red zone and score routinely when they get there. How does that equate to a drop off in scoring. So let’s see NU and OSU are suddenly going to become 50 points a game juggernauts? Or put a defensive spin on it neither opposing defense will allow more than 21 points a game routinely? Bottom line it’s going to be a matter of routine to win. . in Raiderland.

Like you, I'm not concerned about...

…losing Harrell and Crabtree. Sometimes I felt like we were counting on Crabtree a little too much (but he did come through for us, didn’t he?).

My number one concern this year is not special teams. We’ll be fine there, I think.

I am just a little concerned about the O Line, but that’s not my main concern either.

We lost two great starting safeties, but that’s not my main concern

My number one concern is defensive ends. Williams and Dixon were a force to be reckoned with, and I’m not sure we have anyone who can come close to duplicating their production, especially the sacks.

by Bornlaser on Jun 18, 2009 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think

we will have and identical record.

11 wins 2 losses…..but we will have WON our Bowl Game.

Wreck 'em, Tech!

Dont forget....

about Whitlock, Duncan, M. Williams, and Howard… they were very productive last season. Though Whitlock is on the Line… him along with Jones and Sesay (if he goes and makes the grades) will cause plenty of havic against opposing offenses. M. Williams, Howard and Duncan should come along very nicely this coming season along with the rotating Ends.
