DTN's Community Projections // Detron Lewis

DTN's Community Projections:

Detron Lewis

#17 / Wide Receiver / Texas Tech Red Raiders

6-0

209

sophomore

The Facts:

As a true sophomore, Detron Lewis was the second most productive receiver for Texas Tech, hauling in 76 catches for 913 yards, but only 3 touchdowns.  Lewis also received playing time as a freshman, catching 10 passes for 120 yards and 3 touchdowns.

What I Think:

It's not difficult to determine that the area that Lewis needs to improve is catching touchdowns.  We all realize that there was another receiver (Michael Crabtree) or two (Eric Morris) that had 28 touchdowns.  Personally, I think that Lewis is more than capable of playing the role of lead receiver, but he's got to prove that he can get in the endzone.

I voted for 900yds/8tds primarily because he’s still at the Y position, and because I see Tech playing eight receivers this year plus the Hale/James package. However, I hope to be dead wrong. The Leach offense has shown some interesting flexibility relative to personnel. Amendola pulled a 109catch/1245yd/6td season from that spot, but he had Crabtree clearing out the underneath routes. RoJo caught 10 TD’s from the spot 2006.

The combination of Pott’s first year, possibly more running with Batch/Jeffers, and (to me) a HUGE question mark at the Z position might make it tough for Detron.
