What is your opinion of Gerald Myers
I am curious as to how all you Tech fans would grade Gerald Myers. Do you think he has done a good job as athletic director for Tech? Has he done a poor job? Do you think it is time for him to be replaced?
Looking at your sports teams, football is obviously a big feather in his cap. Men's basketball, not so much. Getting Bob Knight was a coup for Tech; hiring his son doesn't appear to have been a great move, but it is still too early to tell. Women's basketball? I don;' know. How much of your struggles there are due to Marcia Sharp retiring and the new coach not getting the job done versus vast improvements in the programs at A&M, texas, and Baylor? Baseball, I think Spencer was a good hire. He had a rough first season, but I think y'all will be really happy with the results he produces in the next few years.
Don't know enough about softball, women's soccer, volleyball, and other sports to comment.
I do think Myers screwed up by not getting you a decent opponent for a yearly neutral site game in the Metroplex. Baylor? Really?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

While I
didn’t like the handling of Leach’s contract this past year, Myers as athletic director was an upgrade from previous directors. And I agree that hiring Leach & B Knight were good for Texas Tech. I also think that P Knight will prove to be good hire. The Baylor game in the metroplex is not a marqee match-up for Tech. But it could in end being benefical, Baylor just might start beating some of the Big XII teams again and our showing in the metroplex could boost Tech’s recuiting efforts
A minus AD
So here what I’m thinking Coach Myers has been a pretty steady beacon of integrity for the school. No scandal s either with money, cheating, doping, falsifying eligibility etc or at least none leap to mind over the last 15 years. In a scandal plagued sport world that’s worth something. I guess the compliance training is working and you have to credit some of that to Myers. So I agree with faunchin. Also we had some really bang up coaches’ i.e. Marsha Sharp, Spike Dykes, and new hires like Dan Spencer looks to be a good fit for the south plains. The smaller audience – specialized teams are seeming to be moving forward i.e. Volley ball, golf and track. Plus the facilities upgrades have been monumental lie the EJ Holub Strength center etc. AS the AD my suspicion is he helped on those projects. That’s at least an A minus effort. The Leach contract event was pretty disheartening – jus t don’t ever want to see more of that crap. But I ‘m probably under stating the work he’s put into the school.
i’d grade him as a B. He’s brought football up and our facilities are zooming along nicely, but there have been no results to speak of for our minor sports and even basketball has taken a hit. Once he decides to retire, I wont be broken up about it, but i think that he has earned the right to retire at his own pace.
Thanks, 12th Man
This is the type of interfacing I like to see here. Myers, after earning Little All America accolades at Texas Tech in basketball, was the basketball coach at Monterey High School when I went there in the early 60’s. He was there a couple of more years, went to South Plains for a year or two, then replaced an outgoing coach at Texas Tech. He had some good and some not-so-good teams while there. Then he moved into the AD slot, being there until now. Obviously, Coach Myers will always be associated with Texas Tech athletics, doing what he feels is best for the school. We could never ask for a more dedicated person to serve the University as it’s Athletic Director. He has been as loyal to what is best for Tech throughout his whole career, insisting on the same from all who have been in Tech athletics and working under his watchful eye. Since he is in his 70’s now, it may be time for him to step aside and allow for fresh minds to come in and take Tech to that next level, especially since we will soon become a Tier-1 Research University. I feel we need the youthful exuberance to boost us to greater heights. Coach Myers will always have my respect for all he has accomplished in sports since I have been around, at all levels, especially at Tech. But, let him make this decision. I think he knows full well if he can still lead effectively. He certainly is not ignorant. When he does leave, I hope his replacement will lead the Red Raiders with all the honor that he did, committed to all things Texas Tech. If so, we will continue to grow and to excel in college athletics.
TTpilk
While NO ONE questions Myers’ dedication and he HAS earned the right to retire on his own timetable, I think we should go out and find an AD that is innovative and dynamic and who would break the Good ole Boy mold.
I hope his replacement will lead the Red Raiders with all the honor that he did, committed to all things Texas Tech.
should be a given….;)

Time to go...
His time has past(just like our double t logo) and it is time for a change, someone with a fresh, forward thinking paradigm vs. the old school(good ole boy lets hire Bobby Knight AKA whats wrong with a little discipline)… Tech needs an athletic dept leader that can change with the times!!!
you don't like the double-T logo? I thought all Tech fans liked it.
What would you like to see it replaced with?
Or do you not like the beveled (three-dimensional) double-T used on current Tech merchandies?
I know I hated it when A&M went to the beveled A&M to “rebrand” our athletic program. Still refuse to by stuff with that logo on it.
Only an Aggie
would do that.
Still refuse to by stuff with that logo on it.
I admit I thought the “beveled” verstion of our beloved Double T ( I STILL love it by the way and dont know what on earth we’d change it to) was a bit too busy. But to refuse to buy anything with that logo on it is a tad extreme.

yeah
b/c it is so hard to find merchandies with the block A&M or T-Star logo on it [/sarcasm]
Only a Red Raider would assume there is only one logo branded for a school.
upset
I was upset about Myers handling of Leach’s contract. but I was also upset about Leach letting it build up to what it became.Knight needs more time to set in as head coach. One year or even two does not constitute a judgment of how successful they will be.Myers believes that when he hires a person he believes that they will be successful.
Myers loves Tech.Everyone should step back and put their self in his shoes. It is a grueling task, I am sure to attend to every need and problem that arises. His demeanor sometimes comes off like he just ate a lemon but he should not be judged just by his outward appearance.Mind you again I was ready to tear his head off the way he handled Leach’s deal.It even pushed me into not wanting to renew my tickets.I even wrote wrote that I would not.But I digressed and looked at my loyalty to Tech.If Leach and Myers has a problem with each other then they both need to resolve the problem and grow up.I say this and I am an avid Leach supporter.
As stated in TTpike645’s post age might be a factor in the future.Tech as a whole needs to change with the times.
A mans heart and desire is shown in the accomplishments of his work. As a whole,Myers has made some great decisions. But times does not stand still.I hope that he will take in all that is in account of Tech and know when it will be time to go.I would.I have learned in life when it is time to go then you do it.Let’s just hope that Tech does not replace Myers with someone that would put us back into the stone ages. That could happen you know.
Let's not forget....
Myers came into an athletic department that was way underfunded and understaffed. He also had to clean up the NCAA elgibility infractions leftover from the previous athletic director. I would say that the athletic department has greatly improved since he took over.
While I was in Coach Leach’s corner during the contract negotiations, they both share an equal amount blame for the unravelling event.
I would probably give Myers a B+ to A- on his body of as AD. JMHO
Myers has done a good job in a situation at Tech that is pretty difficult in general from a funding and recruitment standpoint.
I think it’s unanimous here that the contract for Leach was handled in a, well, less than stellar fashion. But that’s really the only blight on his record so far. Several of our non-revenue generating sports have done quite well (men’s golf, tennis, track and field).
We have had our share of NCAA violations (minor), but what school doesn’t. The main thing is he hired his nemesis (Leach), but it’s paid great dividends. And the guy full on bleeds Red and Black. We could have a situation like the one at Auburn, but thankfully we don’t. I credit Myers from keeping the donors as mostly just that…donors. At many other schools, the donors are the de facto decision makers, but here that seems to be a minor concern.
I’d give the guy a B+ overall. If we can get men’s and women’s basketball to return to semi-glory, and get the baseball team squared away, we’d have a fantastic department. As it is, it’s pretty good.
Good question beergut...
I would have to say I’m in favor of Myers moving on as the program is reaching new heights and I think Gerald thinks too small. The comfort level has changed as most alumni and fans will expect more now. I’m not convinced Myers can handle the growth of what’s to come. I’m a huge Mike leach supporter and I think his coming to Tech has made all the difference. We don’t have the money that UT, OU and A&M have but Mike has made the best of what he has to work with. Myers has done well thus far but I’m skeptical about his vision and agression to making Tech a super power. We all want that and that doesn’t come easy in this conference. Several other sports need drastic help around campus besides football. We truely need a big picture guy with lots of energy and vision. Just my opinion as I’m sure I may be alone on this one.
Naaaa
your not alone at all! I agree wholeheartedly, Myers has done well throughout his time at Tech, but it appears as though it’s time for him to move on, especially after the contract debacle that was humiliating for all parties involved (oh, and the fans, too!!)!

I couldn’t agree with these two items more, either. I know, for one, that my expectations have changed immensely as a current student at Tech, and this is likely to continue with more incoming students as well, as we are getting more applications and interest from incoming freshman than ever before. It’s amazing what exposure through sports can do for a school! It almost makes you feel guilty for realizing sports are so high on everyone’s priority list…oh wait, what am I saying…that’s blasphemy :) !!!!
I have to agree with this comment
Gerald thinks too small.
Thinking too small is why Myers agreed to playing Baylor in Dallas instead of getting a bigger-name opponent.
