#25 "GUNS UP"
Jon Wilner of collage sports hotline has an interesting take on what is the state of TECH for the coming 2009 season. He ranks TECH at #25:
25. Texas Tech: The system is bigger than quarterback Graham Harrell, who departs. But is it bigger than receiver Michael Crabtree?
This is a fair question.I have asked the same question myself. While he calls it a system I do not agree with that as a whole.Lewis and company has just as much experience.I will never take anything away from Crabtree.I would be stupid to do that.I for one thought differently that Crabtree should have come back.We will see this coming NFL season. One ot two players does not make a whole team.If opponents want to think that Potts or the offense is a pure drop off from last year they will have to think again. This is where Leach has the upper hand.He will have Potts ready and the WR position whoever steps up will be also.I am not saying this just because I am a RED RAIDER.This is what gives opposing coaches fits.Add Batch to the bunch what do you have?Batch will be the most underrated player this year when it is all said and done. The offensive line has taken a hit but with carter back(and a great leader he is).I predict that Leach will fool allot of defenses with more running yards even compared to last year.
TECH is a team not a system. All those NFL so called experts can call it what they want and ignore Harrell.Crabtree within his own right deserves everything he has accomplished.Let them write that TECH is "PASS HAPPY".If the word happy is successful than so be it.If it means a bowl game every year than so be it.Wilner needs to look at his own question and see Leach's success for the last nine years. It is a work in progress.Rome was not built in a day.But when completed it stood strong and steadfast.Wilner on the other hand sees something in this team others do not see to rank TECH at 25.We shall see.

What!
It’s not snobby. Just did not see the need to rewrite it all. No need to be testy about that. But, just for you, here is my comment:
“No one separate of the Texas Tech program, whether as a coach, fan or local media (blogs included), has a clue of where this program is or where it is headed. Any coach of an opponents team knows his/her team really well, but knows nothing about the other 11 teams. So, when one makes such a statement, ignore, ignore, ignore……..and no reply needed, because it would not be accepted, appreciated or understood by said coach.”
Just tellin’ it like it is.

Leach never...
having a Losing season as a Head Coach… many CANNOT say that in the BIG 12.
Only Head Coaches (since the Inception of the Conference) that have been able to do that throughout their careers, other than Leach (and still active within the BIG 12)…..
Coach Stoops and Coach Pelini (only 1 year, but I see many more promising ones)
Not active/Former BIG 12 coaches…
RC Slocum (6-6 seasons in 96 and 02)
Tom Osbourne
Not too many coaches, past or present can say they have been able to achieve this task in NOT having a losing record… other than these 5 coaches.
Coach Leach has shown that he CAN and WILL continue to coach and win. Never having a losing season… thats unique. There have been a total of 37 HC changes within the BIG 12 alone, and for Leach to be 1 of the 5 that have been able to achieve this task… simply amazing. Only 13.5% of the coaches in the BIG 12 have had a NON-Losing season (whom have or still coaching in the BIG 12) throughout their WHOLE head coaching career.
Those numbers include the midseason coaching changes in 01 with KU, 05 with CU, and 07 with TAMU.
So whatever any writer, skeptic, or oppositional mind has to say about the Red Raiders or Coach Leach… I say, let them talk. I along with alot of other Red Raider fans/supporters like what we are seeing.
WRECK EM TECH!!!!

I don't see
I do not see many journalist or even coaches ranking TECH in the top 25.I was merely letting everyone know what Wilner had ranked us and what his comments were as well as my opinion. I see allot of respect from the guy ranking us.And If you will look at my past comments, you will find I believe that TECH will have an outstanding year again.Maybe not as many wins as last year but will surprise many. That was my objective. I have noticed that there are quite a few people on here that losses translations on peoples post, thus causing opposing views, or the need to correct a persons opinion to become down right disrespectful at times. We are all RAIDER BREATHEN.

I guess the general consensus on DTN...
Is that no one really cares if we are ranked to begin the season next year. I, for one, will be furious if this is the case. I’ve always loved seeing a ranking next to "Texas Tech or “TTU” on the scores during broadcasts. You can imagine how excited I was when there was a big 2 by it last year!

no, i think that we should be ranked and will be very sad if this trend doesn’t reverse itself before the official polls are put in place.

IMHO
Ranking Tech number 25 is about right. Of course I want to see us do better, and I think probably will. We’ll probably be ranked in the top 20 some time in the season. I just hope we can hang onto it and maybe even dip down into the top 10.

Rankings
Because of the success Texas Tech has had during Mike Leach’s regime, I think Tech is starting to receive a better respect from all factions. That does not mean they are fully aware of where this year’s team should be ranked, but that we are worthy of being “considered” for being listed within the top 25. I expect some doubt from others, and one reason for that could be their negative feelings concerning the Air Raid offense. Many simply don’t like it or believe in it. As a result, they prefer to place teams that run more “conventional” style offenses above us.
It is nice that Wilner has at least placed us in the top 25 of his list. The thing about being placed low in a poll is that it becomes very difficult to break into the top 10, much less the top 5, of any poll. Flip side is that because of the lower ranking, some teams may not take Tech as seriously as they should, which could lead to an upset or two during the season. I think all Big-12 teams are somewhat aware of Tech’s capabilities, so they should all go up agaonst us knowing they must play hard, mistake-free football to defeat us. Our ace in the hole this year could be the new-look defense. By that I mean the added play selections that I am sure McNeil will employ this year as opposed to last year, due mainly to added depth, speed and athleticism. While the experience level may not be higher, the overall player abilities should negate a dropoff there and possibly have better results.
By season end, I feel we will be inside the top 15. With an upset or two to our credit and no letdowns against lesser teams, we could move up higher, maybe get into a New-Year’s Day bowl again. It just appears we could have the opportunity for a really good year again, but also could be worse than expected. Let us hope the team playes this year with a great attitude and desire to excel well beyond anyone esle’s projections. It’s all conjecture right now, but I, as a Red Raider fan, choose to be as possitive as I can. “GO TECH!”

Personal opinion aside on if we do/don’t deserve to be ranked in the pre-season polls…it’s awesome to see the Tech fan base FINALLY have high expectations regardless of it’s “our” year to get the pub. That attitude is what keeps programs like Texas, OU, USC, et al on the front burner…and that attitude eventually bleeds over to all parts of the football team.
I normally temper my expectations of any Tech football team until I see what they actually do on the field. Too many unquantifiable variables greatly contribute to a great (or terrible) season…chemistry, leadership, injuries, lucky bounces, disciplinary/academic issues, other teams’ problems or unexpected successes, etc.
