Rookie Eric Morris could turn out to be a triple threat for the Saskatchewan Roughriders -- returner/receiver/recruiter.

Morris is close friends with former Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, who's on Saskatchewan's negotiation list. The undrafted free agent set multiple school and NCAA passing records during his college career, also finishing fourth in the Heisman Trophy race last season and winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation's outstanding senior quarterback.

The Riders have been in regular contact with Harrell since the NFL draft and there are rumblings he could be in town within the next two weeks. If necessary, Morris will gladly offer his services in an attempt to sell his former teammate on the virtues of football in Saskatchewan.

"I want him here just as bad as they do," Morris said after Friday's practice at Mosaic Stadium. "He'd be great in this league. He's one of the most savvy football players I've ever seen. He understands the game and sees the field better than anyone I've ever played with. (Saskatchewan's) offence is really similar to what we did at Texas Tech so he'd be really good at it. I'm hoping for the best for him. Hopefully he gets a call from the NFL but if not I'd love to have him down here and I think he'd be a great asset to the team."

No sir

I don’t like it one bit.

Harrell would do really, really well in Canada. He would immediately be the starter (as the roughriders have taken the plan of having 8 really bad qb’s as opposed to 1 good one. it’s cheaper that way) in a league where the best qb’s are either ultra mobile or can throw the ball with pinpoint accuracy.

I’d rather see him be successful at the pro level than struggle for 3 years to make an NFL team and then bust out.

I agree, the CFL isn’t really that far gone, Doug Flutie and Warren Moon didn’t do so bad. If GH is as good as we think he is, his play in the CFL will be noticed.

OK, I'll admit it

It “Hurts my feelings.” “It’s not fair.” He deserves a chance in the NFL. It’s embarrasing. All that said, y’all are right and he would do well. But the to guys xwvr mentioned got hosed by the NFL too.

Yeah, Warren Moon got hosed right into the NFL Hall of Fame

It Will be a Great Story Line That Keeps Texas Tech in the Headlines

As an individual player on the field, after a good play by Morris, a reference to Texas Tech may surface. However, I would think that more times than not, Texas Tech would surface when the combo of Morris and Harrell connect on a pass play. Just a thought.

I read the Roughriders blog a couple of days ago. The fans really want Harrell. It was nice to see such positive comments about Harrell vs the constant barrage of negative comments about his “noodle” arm and inability to work from under center. At least he would go where he’s wanted.

Like the rest of you, I wish Harrell would get his due in the NFL. I still think he is good enough if he were to play with the “right” team like a New England but that does not look like it is in the cards. Joining the Roughriders may be blessing in disguise.

I think like most other pro football leagues like it, it will fail. Though it does have big names behind it, I would bet they can’t sustain it for long. I hope they can, just for the audacity of the idea.

But going against colleges and the NFL in the fall is suicide. They also state in their mission statement that they want, “To fulfill the unmet needs of football fans in major markets currently underserved by professional football…”

Cities like New York and San Francisco. Huh?? I guess it could possibly be argued that the 49ers and Jets are not meeting the needs of fans in those cities, but I don’t think that’s where they are going with that comment ; )

by Tech92 on Jun 28, 2009 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

the reasoning for them

When determining UFL franchise cities, the League looked at cities with vibrant economies, strong football traditions and growing populations that lack an NFL presence. Two of the “Premiere” season cities currently host at least one, if not more, pro football teams. We selected San Francisco and New York as they have a rich sports history and devoted fan following. However, our San Francisco team will be playing downtown at AT&T Park, in the heart of the city, while the other teams are not as centrally located. There are no teams that play in metropolitan New York as both the Giants and Jets practice and compete in New Jersey. With our New York franchise, we plan to draw fans from the five boroughs, Long Island and Westchester who may have no other options but to go to New Jersey to watch professional football.

way to make a really long post.

also I think there is a market for a 2nd football league. A sort of developmental league as such, but i think it will really need to be propped up by the NFL. the ESPN deal may be enough.

ESPN? I thought they were on Versus.

I hope Harrel does great in the CFL

but I think he should probably consider joining the CFL team with the receiver who catches balls with the DB’s helmet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3QQVZHq9uU
