Double-T Nation Roll Call
![]() |
| It's your blog. |
It's about that time of year where I ask something about you guys, even if you commented last year. This is me and my "bio" is always located to the left. If you are new to Double-T Nation then this is a perfect opportunity to tell us who you are and your relationship to Texas Tech.
The short version of my story is that I'm just a guy with a laptop and DSL. I graduated from Texas Tech in 1996 with a major in English and a minor in education. I taught high school for a few years and decided that I wanted to do something else with my life, went to law school at the other UT, University of Tulsa. I'm currently practicing law in a small town just east of Dallas. A few years ago, I noticed the overall lack of presence of Texas Tech sports blogs and decided to start writing. Long story short, I eventually hooked up with SB Nation and here we are today.
I truly believe that DTN is your blog as much as it is mine. It's about community, interacting and about having one thing in common, which is a passion for Texas Tech.
Wreck 'Em!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

Hi, I’M UKRaider aka Phil Murray. I’m 24, I graduated Heriot-Watt University in 2007 with Ma International Management in Edinburgh Scotland, where in my 3rd year I spent a year in San Angelo. My “foster” family took me to Tech v Kansas in 2005 (they are both Tech alums with their daughter an alum and their son currently at Tech) and I loved it and ever since, I’ve been a Red Raider. I work in my local cinema whilst I try and find a job in advertising, and in my spare time I trawl the internet for news on Texas Tech as its hard to keep up to date an ocean away.
P.S. Thank you Seth for all your hard work, you keep me up to date and it is really appreciated , you’re a credit to bloggers everywhere.
Southern Louisiana Raider!
Hi all! I am Brian Carey. I’m 36 and live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I graduated from Tech in ‘98 in Chemical Engineering. I have worked all around and this blog is a nice update for everything Tech related! I can’t get back to Lubbock as often as I’d like, but I do make the games that happen in Houston, Austin and College Station!
Go Tech!
-Brian
My relationship with Texas Tech is one that dominated my childhood. I was at every home football and basketball game from the time I was a youngster. My family was very involved with the University, and I traveled to many away games as well. In my younger years, I looked forward more to playing dodge ball at the games with my friends (sorry to anyone we ever ran over or hit with the wadded up dog-wrappers we used as the ball) than the actual games. Over time, however, my mood began to be reflected with how the previous week’s game went. I was also a ball-boy for 2 years with the basketball squad (while Myers was coach), and I witnessed some amazing games from right under the basket.
I did not attend Texas Tech, but know that my heart is with the University always. Even if they played my Alma Mater (which they wouldn’t in Football, maybe hoops), I’d root for Tech over the Quakers.
I work in the oil industry in Houston, and I’m really looking forward to a “home” game with UH this year. The Rice game a couple of years ago was lackluster and really showed the weakness in our secondary. Even though we won big, I hope a repeat is not in store for UH passing. I will always make one big game a year in Lubbock, and I will travel to (almost) any bowl game we make. College Station and Austin are also must-go games being in Houston.
Thanks Seth for providing a daily dose of everything Red Raider related. It’s tough during July to get by…
yes Wharton undergrad - and yes the mighty Quakers
one of the highlights of my undergrad years was beating ranked KU and Temple in back to back home games at the Palestra in Philly – honestly the best “arena” ever to see a college game live – I didn’t get to see much football as I played rugby every Saturday
Fresh Out
I am Jacob Day and just finished my masters in electrical engineering for TTU (hence the jdeeTTU, real creative I know… gotta love us engineers). I recently moved to Wylie (northeast of Dallas) and started a job in the real world. I am not looking forward to being away from Lubbock this fall, but plan to see as many of the games live as I can manage. I bleed red and black… and thanks to Seth and the rest of you guys on this site I am now addicted to recruiting as well (something I never paid any attention to in the past). Thanks to this site I have officially become a year-round addict instead of just in the fall… I find myself checking the site at least 4 times a day, so thanks to everyone who comments throughout the day on news and fanposts so there is new content for me to read during the doldrums that are 1-4pm.
I started following Tech when I was in the 7th grade after watching the football team destroy Steve Spurrier’s Duke Blue Devils. Being a little white boy myself I was taken by how many were on the team. So from that point on that is the only place I wanted to go. At the beginnig of my senior year in high school I applied to one college. Before the end of the first grading period I had been accepted to Texas Tech. I still had dreams of playing football, but after my recruiting visit and seeing Lloyd Hill I believed what my head coach and parents were telling me, I was too small. My first indication that they may have been wrong was seeing Donnie Hart. I made friends with a lot of athletes and went to every sporting event I could while I was at Tech. I graduated in 98 and began coaching and preaching to my athletes that if you want it bad enough it doesn’t matter what anyone says or how big you are. Coach Leach’s system only contributed to this by making stars out of Welker, Amendola, and Morris. I coached 1 year in College Station, 5 in Leander, 2 in Flower Mound. Now I am in Austin teaching Elementary PE and working on my Masters and Administration certification. I get to see a lot more games now that I am not coaching. I miss it, but I also have two boys of my own that I need to spend time with. I watch or listen to every game. I get to go to a few live every year, but I have vowed not to go to any more bowl games. I am not superstitious, but every bowl game I have gone to we have lost, and every one I have stayed home and watched we have won.
I stumbled on DTN a while back and started contributing a little this year. I check in every opportunity I get and appreciate all every one does on this site.
Thanks
Paul

This is my first blog post although I have been a member with this ID since last December and have followed the blog for about a year or so. I gotta start by saying thanks to Seth for putting together such a great blog. This blog is part of my everyday reading and i love it!
So my Tech focused bio in short is this. My dad grew up in Lubbock and has always loved Tech even though he went to UT for his degree. My mom grew up in Austin and so as a small kid I went to UT games all the time. However because of jobs the family moved to Lubbock when I was in 4th grade. Of course I rebelled against the status quo and bought a UT Starter jacket in high school. However my mom got her graduate degree from Tech around the same time and even though my Dad went to UT he always loved Tech and has always rooted for them in everything. When it came time to choose a college I chose to stay at home and go to Tech. That probably will shock a few people that I didn’t go to Tech because I couldn’t get in to any other school. Anyways, ever since then I’ve been a die hard Tech fan. I painted up and got on the front row for a number of games in college including my favorite which was our 70-10 thumping of NU (we spelled “Eat Some Corn”). I received my BBA in December 04’ and MSA in 06’. I have been working in Dallas ever since.
I’ve had season tickets every year since graduation in Section 8 (the best section in the stadium) and make it to many of the games. I just got engaged and have converted my Louisianna fiance’ into a Tech fan (she went to Louisianna Tech and Northwest LA). I love coming back in town for the games and hope to make it to at least 4 this season. I am in the market to offload tickets for the other games and Seth we might need to have a DTN marketplace for those of us with tickets who don’t make it to some games. I have now rambled far too long and will just say GO TECH!!!!!!!!!!
Similar to rpowel2....
Tech was a huge part of my childhood. Rpowel2’s post about being a ball boy at bball games, playing dodge ball at the Jones, & traveling to games – are pretty much the same – which makes sense since he is my older brother : )
I left Lubbock after HS and went to college in Boston. Since my school (Babson College) did not have a football team and the Northeast really doesn’t understand college football – I scared a few a classmates with my enthusiam, but also converted a lot of people into quasi-Tech fans.
I came upon this site a few years ago while I was working in Europe and was dying to for Tech related info since I could not watch any games. Thank you to Seth and all the bloggers here at doubleT. Even though I am back in the USA (Boston) – I still visit almost daily! Wreck ’em!

Yeah Lil Bro!
Babson did not have a football team, but one heck of a rugby team. One of my proudest moments was a game I got to watch my lil bro play in where he scored his first “try” and all his teammates mobbed him screaming, “YEAH TEX!”
We’ve certainly done our part to indoctrinate as many people as possible in the Northeast to become Texas Tech fans.
Anybody remember the extra point we missed to lose to Penn State? Yeah that was my Freshman year (in Philadelphia), and that one for me personally was the toughest ever. The kids in school didn’t understand why I was so crazy (there were plenty of passive PSU fans) or why I broke the television after it was over.
We’ve also worked to eliminate the haters. One work colleague of mine when I lived in NYC said Tech had a POS football program so I asked him to make an O/U for me on Tech’s points for the first 4 games (our opponents were Fl Int, Sam Houston St, Ark St, and Kansas). He now respects the Tech Offense and has actually become a big fan.
Tech has great appeal to college football fans nationwide because we’re not one of the “nameplate” Universities. Most anyone would rather see an underdog or a team with less talent defeat a giant.
WRECK EM!
I have a BS, ‘96, wife BA ’97. My Dad went to Tech in 1950 on a Rodeo Scholarship I’m told. He Met my Mom there after he got back from the Korean War. 2 of his brothers also graduated Tech. Basically anyone with my last name has a degree from both Tech and A&M. I had just gotten out of the Air Force, so fake soldier land made me want to puke, plus I had three years in Lubbock under my belt at the AFB. I knew I wanted to go to Tech, so I swapped an assignment overseas with a guy who was PO’d he’d been stationed in LUBBOCK, TEXAS???? After being Honorably Discharged and getting my GI Bill, I did a semester at Tech and one “down there”. There was no decicion to make. "Thank God I chose Tech and thank God my wife got home sick at Okie State, because I met her at Tech as well.
My Bio is alot like Seth’s though. I taught public school, got an MS(not the disease, the degree), became an administrator then we had to move to Kansas for my wife’s Med residncy. I decided to go to law school after one year working as a middle school principal. Went to TU Law School because there ain’t no law school in Wichita (TU, they call it in Tulsa. Half my wife’s fam is from up there, greatest place in the world if only it were in Texas). I worked as a prosecutor then decided I was ready to start my own criminal and juvenile defense office here in West Plano. Being my own boss, and having nobody looking over my shoulder, I check this spot “during” work. I just say F-off in my head to any boss I ever had every time I log on (I have a problem with authority as you’ve probably figured). Owning my own business is scary, but I can have lunch with my wife and leave Friday morning for Tech games whenever I want.
DTN is the best thing I’ve ever found on the interwebs and is definitely too important to me.
Give ’Em Hell Tech!
Born in Lawton, OK and raised to hate Sooners, I moved to Lubbock when my dad got stationed there to teach Army ROTC in 1982. I went to CHS in 1986 and I got my BS in Restaurant Hotel and Institutional Management from Tech in 1990. I also went through the Army ROTC program and was commissioned.
After graduation I ended up in Americus, Georgia (home of Dan Reeves and Chan Gailey) . I began in contract food service at the local university here but now I work for a technical college teaching culinary arts.
Recently I got a Masters Degree in Adult Education from UGA. The degree was totally an online process and, as such, I’ve never set foot on the campus. I really find a common thread when the Bulldogs lose. It reminds me of days when OU loses. The t-shirt fan takes it personally!
I married a Georgia girl who is a Liscened Massage Therapist. We have two kids 17 and 11. They don’t understand why Daddy has this almost crazy loyalty to a school in West Texas that they’ve never heard of before. But they put up with me!
I really enjoy connecting with my Lubbock roots through this website! I look forward to this season and hope we can pull out a major upset or two this year while winning the ones we’re supposed to!

Greetings fellow Raiders
I am a recently Retired Army officer who was commissioned thru ROTC @ Texas Tech in 1983. Graduated from the Tech Business College. Before arriving in Lubbock my home town was / is Sherman Texas. Met my wife during my first overseas Army assignment and funny thing she is a Shippensburg University Army ROTC graduate. They are of course the Pennsylvania Red Raiders. Too neat. We have a great daughter who like many of you fellow bloggers has trouble understanding Dads obsession with this place of higher learning. I work for the Army here at Ft Hood and trust me it’s never dull around this joint. Now you can tell why I write with campaignism’s and military speak creeping into my postings. I would like to thank you Seth and all the polite fellow bloggers for the great DTN site, the thoughts and energy put into the articles. I thoroughly enjoy the discussion. I too am here every day and it’s never boring. Well done folks.
Just a reminder keep your fellow Americans who are deployed in harm’s way in your prayers. And add one for their families. It’s a tough time and we owe them much for the vigilance and professionalism displayed every day. Go Raiders!

I graduated in Aug. ‘04 from Tech with a Reastaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management degree. I’m from a little town in SW Texas called Uvalde. I’m 29. I live alone in Austin now. Work at Tres Amigos Restaurant out in Westlake. Love Austin (except for all the Longhorns which really clutter the place up). I miss Lubbock. I love Texas Tech, and my time there. I’m proud to be a Red Raider, and wear my ring with pride. I’ve been visiting this site since the old format, and have always thought Seth has done a great job. You won’t see me posting too much during the off-season, but I’m sure you will once it’s football time again. Great work, great site. It’s nice to have our own place to be bias and love our school. I’m a pro musician, and I am currently working on the release of my first album. Strive for Honor Evermore! Long live the Matadors!
¡Viva los Matadores!
I live off Manchaca & Slaughter
NW of the Tres Amigos there. Maybe I’ll look you up some time if out in Westlake. Have a good year as a Raider fan.

Not many fellow Red Raiders in this town. A few. A guy who went to school around the same time as me (Land Mgmt degree) and another that came as I was graduating and got his degree in Architecture. A friend of mine who married a very nice younger girl who also happens to bleed red&Black. God bless her.
My wife (of a month and a half) has long since learned about and accepted my fanaticism. Last year, after we had become engaged she announces to me how we received our FIRST invitation to a wedding as a couple and was very excited about it as was I. She says the wedding will be November 1st 2008. Yes. THAT Night! This was quite a few months before then and I told her I was sorry that I was gonna miss the game as the wedding was going to be in Mexico City. As the game approached I tried unsuccessfully to tell her how important the game was. She didn’t understand why my excitement kept growing. Surely it couldnt be simply relative to the proximity of the game. I tried to explain to her that as it drew closer and both teams continued to go undefeated the IMPORTANCE of the game was growing and with it my excitement. Needless to say she had a hard time keeping up with said excitement.
I spent the ceremony checking my PDA which drew frowns of consternation from her. I said to her, we’re in control as I checked the score. It was a long drive to the reception and I called a buddy of mine (who is an Aggie) to ask him how the game was going. He told me his wife was climbing the walls. (she’s a longhorn) As we arrived to the reception I checked in again and my buddy told me, “youre down 33-32.” “How much time is left”, I asked “and hurry up my phone is dying” “83 seconds” he replied. “Too much time. Its in the bag,” I said as my phone conked out.
As cool as tried to play it…I went crazy trying to find a way to call him back. By the time I extracted the # from my phone and called him back the game was over and it was in the history books.
When my girl finally saw the replay on my TIVO she finally understood the magnitude of the game.
This summer she is getting her michael crabtree jersey. To which I will purchase a GHarrell jersey ( I already own quite a few all the way back to the 95 Cotton Bowl Zebby Lethridge jersey….even a personalized one with the #7{my bday}) my late dad would have loved Harrell for his on field demeanor and the fact that he wears #6. Dad’s Bday.

Congrats! May your union be blessed. Great story about the game tracking. I’ve always been jealous that I didn’t come up with the name “Tortilla Pirate” first.
the naming rights are not for sale, first of all
my Dad just LOVED for QBs to pop up after a sack or a dropped pass and get after his players. He would have loved that about Graham Harrell.

Locked in Austin Raider Fanatic
Hello, everyone. I am Larry Pilkinton and was raised in Lubbock from the age of two. Having been born in 1945 in San Diego., that was a long time ago. My dad was a Born and Raised Texan who worked for a consolidated place that maintained airplanes during WWII in San Diego, so I & my next older brother were born there. We all moved back to near Bonham, Texas when I was about 6 months old and I have been in Texas since, except for my time in the Navy during the Vietnam Conflict (It was a war to me). I graduated from Monterey before entering the Navy (Aviation Technician) for 4 years, got married 2 years afterward, divorced 7 years later, then went to Tech (Studio Art) part-time for 5 years (no degree), as I was working at Litton (Electronics Technician) while attending Tech. When they shut down (schooling incomplete-75 hrs) I found work at Motorola in Austin and found the Lord here (Hallelujah!). I left Motorola in 2002, but now work at Austin Lighthouse for the Blind (Document Specialist-I can see), hoping to retire within 3 more years. My hobbies are portrait & landscape painting & sketching, Golf (when affordable) and DTN. I have 2 grown daughters, one just entering (shudder) UT in September. I have been and always will be a Red Raider and a fan. This site is perfect for keeping abreast with all things Texas Tech. I really enjoy it all, except maybe the usual visiting aggie & horn nuts. Hope to read all your comments during this & future years. WRECK ’EM!

Undedided there.
It all depends on circumstances at the time. I really want to just set up my easel and paint a lot, with a few golf rounds now and then. I’ll just play it by ear. Thanks for asking.

Fan of DTN
I graduated Texas Tech University in the summer of 1971 with a degree in civil engineering. I was born and raise across the bay from New York City and Lubbock was my first experience with Texas life and getting a college education. It would be correct to say it took awhile for both of us. After graduation I moved to DFW area, dedicated all my time to working and raising a family. No interest in dedicating time to following college football at any level or to go back to Lubbock. On a weekend lark I got an invitation to see Kingsbury beat Texas in Lubbock standing with the students and this game changed my perception of college football.
I have since then become a season ticket holder for lubbock games and try to make as many away games as possible. Leach is the perfect fit for Tech and the real reason I am a fan Tech football game. This is my first post and I want to thank Seth for your dedication to making my Tech experience fun.

As luck would have it Brett Reister is my younger brother. I remember your Dad very well and hold him in high esteem. Just because you reminded me I will now go look him up on Army Knowledge Online. Last time I saw him was at Brett’s commissioning ceremony in Lubbock. Brett has just returned from Afghanistan where he was the communications officer for the 101st Airborne Division. Guess this just goes to show you that you can’t keep us Techsan’s apart. Wonderful to hear from you. God bless your family. Please give my best to your Dad. If you are ever in Killeen –Austin for that matter don’t hesitate to come stay. Plenty of room. Go Tech!

RRRAAAIIIIDEEEERRRR.....
I graduated from Tech in may of 1999 with a BS in ME. I grew up in San Angelo, but wasn’t really a fan until I attended Tech. I was an RA while I was there and had a great time bringing new freshmen into the fold. After graduating, I spent 8 years in Houston before moving to DFW.
My wife went to North Texas, but since the mean green hasn’t had much to cheer for since the ’70’s, I’ve converted her. We have 1 daughter (3) who loves watching the basketball games with me.
I am looking forward to a trip to visit friends and see Tech play U of H this year. I enjoy writing for this site (though I have taken a sabbatical since basketball season) and hearing everyone’s thoughts.
Red Raider since '89....
I have been a Red Raider since the ’89 season (age 12) and have continued to route for the Hometown team since then. A majority of my family (cousins, aunts, uncles, etc) route for the Horns or Aggs… but my immediate family and those of this generation are loving the Raiders every single year. I graduated from Monterey High School in ’95…
I never attended TTU, but did go to SPC for a couple of years before deciding to enlist in the U.S. Army, and went to a small college in Killeen, TX for a few semesters. Was a soldier for over 8 years, did two tours in Iraq (2004-2005, 2005-2006) and 5 months in Kuwait (1999). Stationed and Trained in states such as South Carolina, Maryland, Texas, California, Washington (state), and Oklahoma. Now that I am out of the military service am seeking my BA in Business Management (need less than 2 years left) at the University of Phoenix. Yes, I am receiving it unconventionally but with over 60 credits from the conventional college system along with military experience in my background, I believe I have enough knowledge to receive my degree differently than most. I now live in San Antonio, TX and the humidity sucks ass!!!! Haaaa
I have a 12 year old son, name is Kain and he lives with his mother in Lubbock.
Ok, there is a little personal info… Now just waiting out this next few weeks left before Kickoff… gotta love those Red Raiders!!!!!
How do you Austin guys do it??????
My hats off to ya….I just don’t think I could stand the constant barrage of everything-longhorn….
With that said, my name is Kevin Murray , I graduated in 1982, BS-Agriculture, majoring in Park Administration and Landscape Architecture. I graduated on May 15, 1982 and started working for the City of Plano Parks Dept. (hence the name “cityman”) on May 17, 1982. I’m still w/the City of Plano 27 years later. Got married in 1987, 2 kids, 21 and 19.
I have 2 brother-in-laws, and 1 sister-in-law that went to TECH. I wish I could tell you the story of how it came that my sister-in-law went to TECH, but we’ll suffice to say that at first she didn’t want to go the TECH, then I took her to TECH, then she loved it, and then she got 2 degrees from TECH (BS and MS-both in Engineering). Currently I have 2 nephews and 1 niece at TECH. Botgh of my kids want to go..we’ll see.
The story of how I ended at up TECH is long and rather disjointed. My Dad worked for Sears, so we moved about every 4 years. When I graduated from HS, we lived in Louisville, KY, and I had absolutely no plans or even thoughts of Texas Tech. I started school at a small university in western Kentucky. Right after I started college, my family relocated to Plano. In the summer of 1977, I got a summer job w/the Plano Parks Dept., my boss was a TECH alum. I worked for the Parks Dept. for the next 3 summers. Somewhere along the way I ‘figured it out’ (the encouragement that I was getting from my boss certainly helped!!) that I MUST get my degree from TECH in Park Administration. So, I transferred to TECH in the fall of 1979. I was fortunate enough that there was a job opening in the Parks Dept. just before I graduated. I probably wouldn’t have gotten the job if I hadn’t shown them what I could do during the 3 summers I worked there.
My wife has not attended any college, but she has become indoctrinated into the TECH mindset!!! I absolutely LOVED Lubbock when I was there, and would move back in a heart beat. My dream retirement would be to have some inconsequential, part-time job on campus, just so I could be there every day. That’s because to me, there’s no better place to be than the TECH campus. Whenever I go back, I just find a bench somewhere near the UC, I listen to the bells play, watch the students, and remember how special of time it was and still is to so many.

Old Timer
I’m John W. and I grew up in Midland with parents that were OU grads. My girlfriend’s dad took us to see Tech v Baylor in about ’65 where I got to see Donny Anderson play about every position on the field. I went in rooting for Baylor because my older sister went there at the time, but I got converted by the atmosphere and crowd noise at that game. Been a Tech fan ever since.
I entered Tech in 1969 as an EE major, but too many girls and parties got me scholastic suspension in my junior year. It was the age of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, after all. You youngsters have no idea of the atmosphere on college campuses back in the hippie days (yes, even in Lubbock). Plus, THE PILL had just been invented and nobody had ever heard of herpes or AIDS. Needless to say, Tech holds a special place in my heart.
After working a couple years in the oilfield, I ended up at Baylor (still not sure how that happened) to get my BBA and JD (Tech didn’t have a law school when I went there). After a decade in private practice, I’ve been a felony prosecutor for the last 20 years or so.
Last year my screen name was TT_ , partly the result of some kind of computer glitch while registering. I laid low for quite a while after the Cotton Bowl. Call me old-school, but I have no tolerance for internet trolls. In my day, folks knew to keep their mouths shut in enemy territory unless they were willing to step out to the parking lot for a little one-on-one therapy. It was called common courtesy, or at least common sense. But nowadays they just hide behind keyboards and don’t have to answer for their lack of civility. Guess I’ll never get used to the complete lack of manners in some folks.
Old timer said it all
Courtesy is contagious… but being polite well..that’s taught. I couldn’t agree with you more Tech First. Guess that why I like the venue here on DTN for the most part folks adhere to the "golden" rule and keep it civil. Look forward to the next posting. Go Raiders!
The Surprise...
Having been born and grown up for 10 years in arkansas you’d think i might have heard of Tech from the old SWC… but that wasn’t the case, the farthest back i can remember of seeing football with any kind of understanding was SEC games and what not. i moved to the washington DC area when i 10 or so and football just isn’t that big a deal… except for the half time shows… i became a big band nerd all through high school. i was lucky to live in an area that was great for music development… you may ask what that has to do with tech… WELL i’ll tell you ;) when i came time to audition for colleges i auditioned all over the place South Carolina, Youngstown State, the REAL UT (University of Tennessee) LSU, and at the last minute i heard about this random guy that taught out at a place called Texas Tech in a town i never heard of called Lubbock. Turns out he’s a phenomenal saxophonist and liked how i played, i got a scholarship to go here. naturally joined the goin’ band from raiderland and from experiences with that have been hooked ever since and have sortta just gone crazy nuts about college football and everything texas tech.
I’m starting the fall as a 5th year senior, studying for a music ed degree. it’ll take me 6 to get out after my student teaching and all. but i don’t know that i want to teach. i compose music a lot and have gotten lots of cool opportunities along the way. You might could see a documentary on PBS soon that has my music on it! :) I have a feeling i’ll be a LONG time fan of texas tech! die hard!

Set the tone for Tech bands years ago and it is still strong, as the Goin’ Band is among the BEST in the country. Congratulations and I will be praying you are very successful. While there, look up Jack Woody. His family ran, maybe still runs, Woody Tire Company in Lubbock (on 50th, just East Ave. Q, I think). He was a Monterey and Tech grad, while serving as their drum major, way back in the 60’s. Great guy who survived cancer many years ago, losing one eye. Say “Hello” for me.

I am in the graduate accounting program at Tech and I am a third generation Texas Tech Student. My first Tech jersey was a black Byron Hanspard jersey, and my first football game to attend was the 2002 UT – Tech KK shootout in which we came out on top… for those wondering why it took me so long to go to a game, it is because I grew up in Colorado and moved to Lubbock for college.
another from Plano
Country boy with the city of Plano is my brother in law and lives and dies with Tech ever weekend. I’m a fossil from the 60’s and early 70’s by the name of Eddy Clinton. Played baseball….then wrote for the UD……then channel 11 as sports director in the Hub City. Did the Gerald Myers….Jim Carlen and Steve Sloan Shows. Have waited to free Taylor Potts for two greats years and then he will be the first (other than Billy Joe Tolliver) Red Raider qb to play a long time in the nfl. My two step sons are both at Tech. And my lovely bride is a big time red and blackster. I’m so old that Kent Hance was my attorney when I was in Lubbock. When I left to come to Dallas he held a going away party and said he would have to let two secretaries go because of the loss in speeding ticket revenue that I brought into the office. The Hillbilly from Dimmitt has done alright for himself hasn’t he. Thanks seth for the site.
Current Student
My name is Travis and I’m a current grad student at Tech working on my MSA (Master of Science in Accounting). I also completed my undergrad in accounting at Tech finishing up in May of 2008. I spend this past spring (January – May) doing in an internship in London with Deloitte. It was a fantastic time and I just received a full time offer for when I graduate which is putting me under a bit of stress as this is probably the largest decision of my life so far. I check DTN daily and truly can’t get enough of it.
I’m currently living in Plano (where I’m originally from and graduated high school) doing another internship with Pricewaterhousecoopers in Dallas. I start school back up this fall for my last year as a student and my last year to make every home game. I’m really looking foward to it.
Seth, you do an outstanding job and I wanted to say thanks again for all your hard work.
Tech in Austin
Hello, I’m Terrill Isbell and I graduated in 93 with a degree in Political Science. I live in Austin/Round Rock and have been here since 94. I grew up in Amarillo, so it was easy for me to choose tech. It was close to home and the family liked that idea. I don’t do anything related to politics, but strangely have been in high-tech manufacturing since moving to Austin. I do participate in a dog protection sport called Mondioring, and I volunteer to help train police K9 dogs too.
Above all, I cannot stand UT and their loud mouth bragging. It’s just a constant flow of crap. Of course, they have already announced that they will win the national title this year, we all just don’t know it yet. At the end of the season last year, one of their radio announcers listed all the teams that UT would play and called them all crap, one by one, thus guaranteeing a national title.
I was searching around for tech football information a few years back and found doubletnation. I’ve checked it daily ever since.
Hey, Terrill!
I have not seen any of your insightful postings for a while. Welcome back. Give me a call. I think you have my number. I saw Pete a while back. He is wanting to go to Europe!

Another Raider in Austin?
I bet you guys do get tired of the constant BS down there in liberal-loonie-land. I’ve got a Whorn in the office next to mine and I have to whip out my screensaver on a regular basis: (to make it better, the guy on the other side of him is from LSU)

Raider Fan Since Birth
My first memories of going to a Tech game was sitting on the grass around the Double T in the 1960’s. J.T. King was the head coach. I remember Donny Anderson playing for Green Bay and feeling bad that I rooted against Green Bay because I was a such a Cowboys fan.
My family is from South Texas but my dad wanted to move to Lubbock because it was a college town. He was a big supporter of Tech. In fact, he used to host an annual dinner for the JV team in the 1970’s at his restaurant. My cousin played for Tech in the early 70’s when Carlen was the coach. I was in Hog Heaven in those days – getting to meet all the players and Coach Carlen was quite a treat for a young lad.
I graduated from Lubbock High in 1977 and started at Tech in the summer of 1977. Hence, my handle rr77. However, I got accepted to West Point so off to Army I went. Although Army is my true Alma Mater, I will always be a Raider fan. (You can imagine my excitement when Army almost beat A&M last year! Beating A&M by both my teams would have been priceless).
I currently live in Phoenix. There is a group of Raider fans that gather at a couple of watering holes to watch the televised games. Last year the group grew so large that we had to use multiple locations!
Seth, I would like to thank you again for taking the time to do what you do with this site. You treat people with dignity and respect. You present well-researched thoughts and provide a positive environment for free expression. If you practice law half as well as you manage this site, I’ll call you if I get in trouble. :>).
I don’t post very often but I visit the site daily and often.

I graduated from Tech in ‘98 with a double major in Accounting and Mechanical Engineering. I grew up in Odessa so working in the Oil Patch seemed to be a natural fit after graduation. It was an industry that I had worked in ever since I was 13 years old and was working on drilling equipment in my granddad’s shop. I have worked for several of the Majors, such as BP and Chevron all over the lower 48, Alaska and Gulf of Mexico offshore. I spent most of my career in Midland which is a great place to raise kids. I now work for an independent Oil Company in Midland and I actually love my job. I spend most of my time in Southeast New Mexico and West Texas.
I am married and have a son (9) and a daughter (11). I bought season tickets as soon as my daughter was born so I could start the indoctrination process early. Even with our busy schedule of juggling kid activities and sports in the Fall, we still try to make every home game. My best Tech memories are either last year’s Crabtree catch or the Zach Thomas interception for a TD against A&M. My worst memories are all the Cotton Bowl’s but especially the ugly fluttering field goal that Alabama kicked against as time was expiring in the 4th. My first TECH game was against SMU in the mid 80s when Tech had a chance to upset the #2 Mustangs but let them run a kickoff back as time expired to lose the game. (ouch).
I love Tech Football and I really love the fact that there is an intelligent forum like Double T Nation to actually discuss it. Great Job Seth! This site has probably the best information out there.
Get your Guns Up,

Hi
So I just got back from Dallas this weekend and can now post in this thread.
Basic rundown:
Graduated 2006 (in December, so I got 5 football seasons :D)
Live in Austin, just bought a house.
Work on medical clinical software.
Looking for the million dollar idea.
What software?
I’ve been doing health IT consulting for a decade and have managed many clinical IT projects…just curious.
Cool…I’ve done a little work with Next Gen, but it has been a while. I’ve been working mostly with Epic Systems the last 7-8 yrs. I’m sure the stimulus will keep you busy for a while…:o)
Hello out there in Raider Land
I’m Barry, graduated in ‘05, started following Tech football religously in the 2000 range…
I live in Houston and got to see Tech vs. ECU in the then ’Gallery Furniture.com Bowl’ (at this point I had never seen an offense so dynamic as the one Mike Leach presented). When I attended Tech from ‘01-’05 I never missed a home game… now living back in Houston I go to Tech games as they come to me (Rice, U of H, etc)
My family has always been into the Raiders, my Grandmother was in the first classes at Tech that allowed women, and my Aunt and Uncle are both huge alums, and big time supporters of Texas Tech. My cousin also just got admitted into Tech and will begin classes in the fall (sounds like a good excuse to sneak away and catch some home games this year).
add another to the Austin contingent
Grew up a lifelong Longhorn fan. Started going to band camps at Tech back in the mid90s and decided to go to college their after HS. Graduated in 03 and moved back to Austin. I now shutter at having to listen to all these horns here. Its awful!
My first Tech football game was the illfated loss to North Texas in 99 after losing Ricky Williams for the season. My wife is a UNT grad and she still rubs it in. The next week we redeemed ourselves by tearing down the goalposts against #5 A&M, they were never the same!
I carried the goalpost down University after the A&M '99 game.
That was a fun one.
¡Viva los Matadores!
Add another from San Angelo...
I was raised in San Angelo and stayed in West Texas to attend Tech after initially accepted to UT. It just felt more like home. My brother followed me to Tech and I met my wife there. Graduated with a BA in Marketing in ’93 and MBA in ’96.
I loved going to all the Tech sporting events as a student. Wish I could get back to see more, but Houston isnt’ really close. I have always tried to keep up with my Red Raiders over the years, and was elated to discover DTN and Seth last year. It is a great forum.
It is great to learn about everyone here and I hope we have a super season. I don’t think we are rebuilding, but don’t think we’re reloading either…however I think we’re trending in that direction.
I look forward to chatting with everyone this season.
Gregg
West Texas Born and Raised...
Just got in from California for a week. Some great Tech stories here I see!
I grew up in a small town here in the Panhandle. Never cared much for college football until ’89 while I was a Sophmore at Tech. A couple friends took me to see Tech beat number 19 ranked Arizona I think. We had seats on the front row in the corner by the tunnel where apposing teams come down onto the feild. We were three sheets in the wind by halftime. And the Arizona players were the “beneficiaries”. We hurled all kinds of “pleasantries” their way each time they went to and from the locker room. After the game a security guard had to come and stand between us THREE and the apposing players cuz several had stopped in front of us and were threatening to come into the stands(raising their helmets and flipping us off in frustration),,,LOL. Not my proudest moment to be sure…but I was hooked on Tech football from that day forward.
I was there when Zach beat A&M, when our horse died(RIP), when the A&M fans refused to eat our goal post, when Taureen beat O Who on the last play of the game, and when Mr Crabtree was dogpiled about ten yards from me after that unbelievable play he made to beat Texas.
from family of Red Raiders
Many Tech degrees in our family…parents and aunt and uncle were at Tech when I was born and my aunt was in the Goin’ Band (encouraging my son to follow in her footsteps). I’m a coach’s kid and grew up mostly around the Lubbock area. I graduated in ‘89 and got my MEd in ’91. Currently live in San Angelo but sure miss the Lubbock area and living in the midst of the great Raider spirit!! Can’t wait to get back to the area.
Thanks, Seth for this site! Love it!!

Also worked in the athletic cafeteria when I was at Tech…James Grey, Bam Morris, Tracy Saul… :)

To make a long story short:
Hometown is San Antonio
Graduated 2005, Civil Engineering
Still in Lubbock about to finish a long-term project.
Will be moving back to SA very soon, but will keep my season tix.
Work has been busy, but looks like I’ll have it a little easier soon so more time on DTN!
LondonRaider Here
Key Stats:
• Born and raised in Lubbock, TX
• Graduated with a Dual BA in PoliSci and History in 1995
• Attending Tech football, basketball and baseball games since I was 7 years old
• Lived outside of the US for almost 10 years (last 6 in London) where I came for B-school and am now active in European real estate investment
• Two small kids: a boy, 3, and a girl, 1.
• Miss Texas every day, and even though I’m a converted Euro city boy now, hope one day to make it back.
• On any Saturday night over the past 10 years you will have found me huddled over the internet at anytime between 7:00pm to 4:00am listening to 95% of Tech games (my now-wife thought I had another girl friend until I convinced her otherwise, and she still married me anyway). The other 5% on TV and of course. . .
• Last year, decided on Wednesday (at the relentless urging of my Boys) to go to Lubbock for the Tech-UT game. Flew out on Friday. Couldn’t get in until Saturday morning and flew back Sunday night. To be there was the best Tech experience ever.
• This year planning to bookend UT and UH games around a business trip.
• Football: Huge Leach fan. Cannot understand why we don’t hire TCU’s defensive coordinator and replace Ruffin. Seriously, what’s the marginal cost ($100k?)
• Basketball: Think that we sacrificed the long term interest of the basketball program to bring in Bobby Knight (possibly the world’s greatest coach and equally one of its worst recruiters) in the short term. Also think that James Dickey (arguably one of the best recruiters in the 1990s while being an atrocious floor coach) got absolutely railroaded in the process. Mixed feelings on Knight Junior.
• By far the best Tech site with the best informed fans. Kudos to Seth C on an amazing achievement. Hope to keep contributing for a long time to come.
• Looking forward to a rebuilding year, but hoping for 8 to 9 wins. Then watch out 2010!
• Go Red Raiders!
Hope he proves otherwise,
but I plan on being a vocal critic this year. We are extremely thin in the front and raw in the back. I think as an emerging national program we just have to be better at the defensive coordinator position.
What’s impressive about TCU is that what they do on defense is akin to what we do on offense which is to maximize relative lack of talent with very efficient and smart schemes. That starts with smart coaching.
As I’ve stated in previous posts, our defense started 2008 with a whimper, improved for a few games in the middle of the season, and fell apart at the end of the year. That was with two to three NFL caliber players
Ruffin argues that simplifying his schemes allows players to play with more raw agression. However, we saw little evidence of this benefit. Bob Stoops and others were easily able to devise a game plan which left us exposed on too many occassions.
Remember, our defense ended the year as the 80th ranked total defense in the country (two spots lower than Toledo). Ruffin has hardly cemented his future.
The recruiting powerhouse which is TCU, by the way, finished the season ranked number 1 in total defense. Heck, San Jose State finished number 21 – how hard would it be to attract that defensive coordinator to Tech?
Always enjoy your analysis London
I’m with you on the defensive gameplan. If you’re going to make it to the Houston game, please contact me so we can enjoy the pregame and discuss how McNeil (and the Raiders) are doing.
Will do rpowel2
I’m just hoping that’s not the game where our concerns get validated. Do you have any idea how to share contact numbers discretely and all that stuff?
by LondonRaider on Jul 21, 2009 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions
The two conferences make this comparison apples to oranges;) I do agree that our defense is not where I’d like it to be tho. But I have heard so many good things about this past years recruits that it’s got me very hopeful for 2010, as well as the possibility of Ruffin pulling a rabbit out of his proverbial DC Hat this year;))) As of now, I’m not gonna predict more than 8 or 9 wins for ‘09. Even so, I’m getting pretty pumped up already!!
Tech Alum
I graduated in 1992 from Tech. I have 2 older brothers who also graduated from Tech. I am a self employed architect and have an office in Plano and also live within 2 miles of my work. I am a huge Tech fan and live and breath Texas Tech football especially during the season. I have 2 daughters who are 1 and 4 who will some day also be red raiders. I really enjoy this web site as most of the people on here always seem to represent what I feel like tech is all about. Lots of knowledge and facts to pull from when wanting to learn more about my team and school. Red raiders always in my mind stand for integrity and I feel like that is what we have on this site. Seth you’ve done a great job here.
Paying Tribute
I was actually born an raised near the Hub City (Brownfield to be exact), but moved right after graduating high school. I received a BA at the University of Notre Dame and also an MFA at Chapman University. I’m currently living in Los Angeles.
My brother’s the only one in my family that attended Tech. He majored in Finance and Business Economics and graduated in 2000. He was a HUGE Tech football fan and bought season tickets for his entire family. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2005. My family has continued to keep his spirit alive in many ways. My parents have now become big Tech supporters (not that they hated the school before), and are also season ticket holders.
I really enjoy watching the Red Raiders (maybe even more so than the Fighting Irish), and I am hoping to go to my first game in November. What was once a way to pay tribute to my brother has now become a reminder of how much I miss home and how proud I am to be from West Texas.
Welcome to the fold, Aeris104
This is probably one of the best college blogs, with many contributors, plus a few we could probably do without. It just makes it more interesting and the information garnered is well worth the venture into this Red Raider realm.
TTpilk
Born in Lubbock, though raised on the east coast and southeast most of my life as an Air Force brat. Spent any school vacations in and around Lubbock my entire life as that’s my mother’s home as well. I’ve been a Red Raider fan from day one. Everyone in my family has either attended or graduated from Tech, so it’s a genetic thing, I think. I headed to Tech for college and an ill-fated attempt to walk on to the baseball team (eschewing a books only scholly from Elon College in NC)…best decision I’ve ever made.
Graduated in ’92 with a BA in English, joined the USAF, went to grad school at Central Michigan, got out of the Air Force and bounced around California for a few years before heading back home to Texas.
Recently went to the dark side as I took a job with the University of Texas Medical Branch as the deputy director of clinical operations. Still weird getting money from UT, but I laugh out loud every two weeks.
Usually hit two home games and one road game every year, though that may dial back since we welcomed a baby girl to the brood in January. I tend to get pretty worked up by the games and have made a vow to tone it down a little for the sake of family peace this season. We’ll see how that goes, though I’m not optimistic I will succeed.
Love the work Seth has done and the time and effort he’s put into giving all of us a place to spout off. Though we can agree or disagree on various topics, there’s nothing like being surrounded in the world wide webisphere by fellow Red Raiders. This is one of the only sports blogs I’ve encountered where the conversation leans high brow and semi-intellectual. Big kudos to all the DTN voices.
Additions
We just added one to our household in April. They are a blast, but do hinder the sporadic road trips haha.
We added one to the family in January too.....
She’s a Great Pyrenese we rescued from the McKinney SPCA. She barks alot, but I feel safe nobody will break into our home :)
Tech Alumni
Graduated Texas Tech University in 2005, with a BA. Graduated Baylor Law School in 2008. Currently practice in McKinney, Texas.
I have absolutely no allegiance or interest in BU sports. Everyone, for four generations, in my family went or is going to Texas A&M University. Being that I am from a Class 1A High School less than an hour away from TAMU, I went to Tech to get away from all of that. Truly one of the best decisions I made.
Currently have season tickets, and try to make at least 3 home games and 2 away games every year. I appreciate the efforts everyone puts in to make this site what it is.
This is by far
the most favorite thing I do each year. I love hearing from you guys (and gals?) and your backgrounds.

Hi I’m Elissa. I’ve been reading DTN for a while but never really felt the need to contribute. Generally whatever I’m thinking gets stated by someone else.
I graduated with an BS & MS in Industrial Engineering in ‘05 & ’06. Spent 4 years in the Goin’ Band. (Saxamaphone!) 1st exposure to Tech was thru my 2 older cousins who attended while I was in Elem and JH. Also one of my best friend’s parents are both Alums and took all of us girls to various games throughout HS. My 1st Tech game was the ‘98 Texas game (Woohoo for beating Texas in the R.Williams battle). Can’t begin to elaborate on all of the great memories related to Tech football. Love having season tickets as an excuse to go back and visit friends and yell alot.
Just want to say that y’all provide great information. I love being more informed than all my friends!
Proof
that us guys are not the only one with a big passion for football. Welcome into the Black & Red matter scene. It is glorious! Chime in anyways. Your input will make the site even better, I feel, because you might point out something we guys might miss. Always good to have that extra perspective.

and you spelled “y’all” correctly to boot! I see “ya’ll” more than I care to – but I’m just weird like that.
“ya’ll” just screams yankee to me.
Good to see you, RaiderChick. You wouldn’t be the famous mystery, yelling, face-painted girl would you?

What can I say my mom’s an English teacher. I have to spell even slang correctly. And yeah no, after years of poly/wool blends and capes, I go for slightly more normal looks at games now.

Long time reader, first time poster. I graduated from Tech in Dec. ’05 with a degree in communication studies. I found this blog in 2006 while i was on lunch at work. Been reading it ever since.
I AM MAX
Son of Louis a great warrior of the South Pacific and Korea.
I was born in the year of Eisenhower’s reelection, the year "In God we trust" was put on our money, the year Elvis first swung his hip into the hearts of women, the year the warrior Salk slays the dreaded monster Polio, the year Jackson Pollack splattered his blood on the dash of car.
I am a child of the great high plains; I do not fear heat, cold, ice, hail, snow, the wrath of cumulonimbus, and least of all wind.
I spent my youth flying the highways of between Lubbock and Amarillo on two wheel steeds of Iron in search of women of high moral character and large breast.
Luck was with me, I never heard the song of the Sausage Creature, and I found a woman of high moral character.
I make my living with camera and chemistry, I enjoy shooting guns from the 19th century because they belch fire and brimstone, and smell of the breath of dragons.
I can read and interpret with my own brain, so I view A.M. Radio and opinion T.V. as the new opiate of the masses.
I sent both my kids to Tech.
If you read this and do not understand why I love Mike Leach and the Texas Tech Red Raiders, I suggest you check with you holy man and ask why you have no soul.
I am Max, I am part of the TT Nation.

My mother graduated from Tech in 41. My brother graduated in 67. I graduated in 76 BBA.
My nephew in 96. My daughter in 2003.
I have held football tickets since 77. I have attended most of the home games for 37 years. My mother loved Raider football and I always had a ticket for her till she passed away at 82.
In the early-to mid 70’s Tech had very respectable teams. I’m not sure there there are any better colors for a college team than Red and Black. Thanks Seth.

Was a Saddle Tramp in 96. I was the first Treasurer of the refounding chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. Huge Tech Football fan! Just married the love of my life who happens to be an aggie. Her father got his masters at Tech and was an assistant football coach to Spike in the late 80’s. My brother and his wife graduated in 01. I love Tech! I love talking about Tech Football. If you’re ever in a Dallas bar durring a televised football game and you see an annoying guy in a Tech Jersey running around the bar ringing a Saddle Tramp bell as loud as he can when Tech scores, odds are… it’s me.

Another GIRL!
Hey y’all! Another Raider Girl here! My name is Kathy — KO for short — and I’m a 2004 English/Comms Studies grad. I live in Lubbock with my husband Luke (BA Psychology 2005) and our dogs…wait for it…Raider and Matador! My parents both went to Tech, so I grew up hearing stories about haunted dorms and the Goin’ Band and knew Tech was the place for me. I’ve always been a huge football fan, and spending those years in the student section just solidified my love for the RED RAIDERS. The Jones on a Saturday afternoon is the greatest place on earth!
I have read DTN for a couple of years now, and I really appreciate all the effort Seth & others put into it. I don’t pretend to know everything about football (I know just enough to get me into trouble!), but I do enjoy following it & continually learning more about it. I’m happy to be able to contribute next week as I’ll be sending in pics from Leach Women’s Clinic, so be on the lookout!
Thrilled to be part of Raider Nation, and now Double-T Nation. Wreck em!
KO emailed me after my request for photos for the women’s clinic and fashion show. It’s safe to say that I’m giddy about the whole thing as I’m pretty sure the internets will stop. Thanks for stopping by DTN.

Hey there Seth –
Thanks for all the great work you do here – I am an infrequent post-er, but a frequent reader of this very informative Tech blog.
I was born in Abilene in ‘56, raised in Lubbock from ’58 to ’65; grew up in Odessa. I attended Tech from ’75 to ’80. Fortunate to be in Saddle Tramps – even luckier to serve as Raider Red in the Fall of ’77.
I have lived out here in San Francisco for the last 20 years – last year may have been the best year to be a California Tech fan (right up there with the whipping we gave to Cal in the Holiday Bowl in ’04!).
Looking forward to another exciting season – Let’s Go Tech! Wreck ’Em!
I’m Greg, graduated in 1997 with a BS in Computer Science. I currently live in Austin (agree with the overabundance of Longhorn arrogance, I’m curious if this is new (since Mack Brown came to UT) or amplified (since I live in Austin). I know when I went to Tech we hated the Aggs and everyone else was not that bad.
I initially didn’t know about Tech, my brother went there by necessity and the family went to Lubbock to get him settled in the summer. I LOVED the campus and decided then and there that I’d go to Tech a year later. I’ve never regretted the decision and would like to move back and/or retire there one day. It’s interesting to see the developments going on around Tech and Lubbock in general. I took my wife to the ‘08 UT game and we had a blast at the game and around town afterwards. (I also got tshirts and such for my brother who couldn’t go) Now, if we can just get more Tech merchandise around here, that’d be great. (seriously, the admin needs to do a better job with our licensing)
