Don't tell the Aggies, but...
Surprisingly, according to Pat Forde at ESPN, the Tech/AtM conflict is the #6 current rivalry in college football right now. Unsurprisingly, OU/UT is number 1. Here's the story:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=4297677&sportCat=ncf
From pirates and soldiers to draft pick controversies and goal post jousting, I find it hilarious that people totally unassociated with either program can identify the bitter feud between the two schools as a rivalry. Most fans of Tech also recognize this status. But the proud Aggie gods cannot find a place in their schedule of hallowed traditions to include Tech as a rival. That is the humor in the whole situation.
I know the standard response from AtM fans will be something along the lines of, "Tech is not a rival. They are so pathetic and classless that they can't get a real rival. blah, blah, academics, blah, blah. UT is our real rival and we beat them a couple times recently." (Wait the last sentence should've read, "t.u. is our real rival...") UT is so far ahead of AtM in football right now, though, many longhorn fans would probably be surprised to find out that the Aggies are still fielding a team.
Tech's program is ahead of the Aggies also, but the off-field drama and hatred is what has propelled this rivalry so far up. In fact, AtM should be happy that this whole "rivalry" thing is panning out. It's about the only way they can get any press outside of Fran-gate and people trying to analyze if they will be able to compete with Baylor for 5th place this year or not.
So here's to the official #6 rivalry! (whether they like it or not.)
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

I think for it to be a rivalry there has to be a chance for either team to win When a team is out-manned they can rise up, overcome the odds and pull out a victory. There was a time when they may have been a rival, but they are now just another W on the schedule. I don’t think that counts as a rival. That would be like saying SMU might be a rival.

That's how I've always viewed it
The A&M games are always fun to be at and watch on TV just because of how much we apparently annoy them by saying we are rival teams. It seems like many Tech fans consider the A&M game the most important game of the year, and this has always been mindboggling to me. Obviously it’s a matchup between two Texas schools so that draws excitement, but its really not even competitive anymore. I also just view the Aggies as a free win on the schedule and tend to not get too hyped up when we play them as opposed to UT or OU.

i just hope our team doesn't
as we rise to the top, we need to remember that every W counts and if they catch us slacking on the wrong day… it won’t be there…

with that said...
i think our most exciting games now are the home games against UT or OU depending on the year. they all know they aren’t safe in Lubbock and they DO admit to Lubbock being a hard place to play.

I never had a thing for Aggies in the rivalry department until I met two of them when I moved to Dallas. We became friends and did a lot together. But they openly mocked my degree from time to time – in jest, with a touch of sincerity hidden behind hit. So that began to bug me…especially since I made more money than both, and one was an underemployed karaoke DJ with no “real job” prospects. Since then, I’ve had a fairly open dislike for all things aggie – including those two yahoos, whom I no longer hang out with.

I’ve noticed the same thing in recent years. Most aggies of my era (the graybeard guys today) were pretty good guys – at least the ones I knew. Then in the 80’s atm started trying to be cool; they started watering down their traditions and lost what made them special along the way. Now the general lack of class (don’t know how else to say it) in the general student body has spread to the entire school it seems – from the administration [not counting Gates] to football. It’s hard to put a finger on the problem, but it’s definitely there and doesn’t seem to be a passing fad.
Seems nowadays all they know how to do is run everybody else down (see that ‘blogger’). Guess that’s a natural although childish way to divert attention from their own issues. Sad in a way. Makes the whole state look bad.

Since this is NOW, I would say it is not as much a rivalry as it was, but still a rivalry.
In the days prior to 2000, Tech and A&M were never out of any of the games, it seemed. For Red Raider fans, it was just as sweet to defeat them as it was to beat UT. Because of the success of late for Tech and UT, it becomes very frustrating when we lose to them. But, to lose to A&M just seems to bite just a bit more. They have a coach now that could lead them back into the limelight, so we do need to be more aware of them and just take care of business to prevent any chances of them getting the upper hand. But, is is so much fun when Texas Tech beats the Ags. SO MUCH FUN!

Leave it to the Aggies
To have made this a rivalry by protesting in the loudest possible fashion that it ISN"T a rivalry.
Despite all their protests of how we are classless because we take down our own goal posts (what biz is it of theirs?), punch Governor’s aides in the face (that was them, by the way…its been documented), etc…it has only served to fuel the fire. Given all of this they can only expect us to delight all the more as they wallow in mediocrity.

What I PROMISE will happen…if/when the Aggies ever start consistently playing us close or winning with any regularity, it will THEN be deemed their second biggest rivalry. But since we boot stomp/break their hearts more often than not, they refuse to accept the title. Fine by me.

disagree
I think if/’when we beat you two years in a row (once home, once away), we will cease to worry about Tech.
We royally screwed up by hiring Franchione, which has set our program back, but Tech hasn’t really taken advantage of that, b/c you are still so far behind texas and Oklahoma.

Already planning your state of complacency? Didnt that have at least something to do with the situation youre in now?!?!?
Tech hasn’t really taken advantage of that, b/c you are still so far behind texas and Oklahoma.
…and yet we’ve managed to put some distance between Us and the aggies. I’d say we’ve taken plenty advantage of it.
It’s amazing that even through a bulletin board such as this we can all still spot your BS, faux humility, and baseless bravado from a mile away.
keep deluding yourselves into thinking that you are “one fix away from turning the whole thing around”. Im sorry but its my humble opinion that there is just something culturally unappealing in playin in College Station.
Delusion is also taking solace in the fact that we still haven’t overtaken OU and UT. Keep that up and the Baylor Bears will have YOU in their rearview mirror in no time. By your own formula, they can “cease worrying” about you with a win next year.

HAHAHA
I think if/’when we beat you two years in a row (once home, once away), we will cease to worry about Tech.
That’s the most ridiculous logic I have ever heard of! “O, well, we beat them two years in a row. Looks like it’s time to stop worrying about the ole Red Raiders, even though they are a solid team year in and year out, they pose no threat now.” Maybe that attitude can explain the 49-9 loss to UT last season. The Aggies probably assumed that they didn’t need to worry about UT because they had beat them two years in a row, then got complacent on thanksgiving night….BAH HA HA.
I think the “if/when” part of this comment is funny too. Well, I’ll tell you what, if/when Hell freezes over is when you should stop worrying about any team (including Tech) if/after you beat them 2 years in a row.

Also
If we are still sooo far behind Texas and Oklahoma, where in God’s green earth does that put the Aggies?

I wonder
if Beergut gets tired of spewing retarded sh!t and getting verbally b!tchslapped only to vanish with his tail between his legs every time he comes around. I mean. Where did he go?!?!
I love a good debate as much as the next guy. But at least the guys over at silverandblackpride were relentless if not necessarily well informed. Not to mention they suffered from a severe case of homer-itis.

It hurts them to admit...
Tech has become their largest rival. Lets face facts UT looks at A&M the same way we do lately. Pretty much a “W”. They haven’t been relevent since the Big 12 formation and that has to hurt. A&M still wants to believe in the “Sherrill” team they once were. Those days are long gone and teams such as Tech and OSU have stepped up and continued to remain competitive. Baylor is what they need to worry about for now. I can honestly see A&M improving but not to the likes of Tech anytime soon. Aggies will always disregard Tech as a rival simply because it hurts them so much to admit it. Fact is I think tech should be the one saying A&M isn’t a rival since they can’t compete in the Big 12. For me I think OSU could be one of our true rivals.

Hey I could...
See OSU being a pretty nice rival. Not only has the series been stiff as of lately, but both sides have somewhat the same mascots….
The masked rider vs. the riding cowboy
Raider Red vs. Pistol Pete…
Yeah I could see them being more a rival than A&M…
This saying still kills me… Vick ’em Red Raiders…. LMAO!!!!!

On paper this sounds great. But I would not be so quick to embrace this idea for the fear of the game becoming a Red River Rivalry Light.

I’m going to have to totally disagree with Beergut’s comment:

First of all, it always has to go back to Fran. Anyhow, that makes no sense. How has Tech not taken advantage of the Aggies’ situation since Fran was hired? Tech is 5-1 against the Ags (with the loss by 1 TD) since Fran first came on the scene at AtM. That is not taking advantage, it is manhandling. Besides, taking advantage of one inferior team’s situation of crappy coaching has nothing to do with catching up with the top programs.
Tech has been steadily improving over the past few years gaining more and more national attention, and has even beaten UT or OU 3 of the last 4 years. Are we at the same level as UT or OU in regards to fanbase, recruiting, or overall strength of program? No. Is there still room for a lot of improvement? Hell yes. But Tech was as high as #2 in the polls last year and did tie OU and UT for the South Championship. The gulf between the programs is not as large as it used to be.

Bet Beerman is gonna say something about this… From Beergut…
We royally screwed up by hiring Franchione, which has set our program back, but Tech hasn’t really taken advantage of that, b/c you are still so far behind texas and Oklahoma.
This is too funny, but hey TT has had their multiple seasons of downfall in previous seasons… the ones that are brought to mind… 78-85. Yeah the Rex Dockery and Jerry Moore years… yeah those were really bad seasons for Tech fans, but hey the Red Raiders were able to go 4-4 against the Aggs those seasons. Then again guess the Aggs really didnt have too many good seasons during that time frame either.
A&M is in the same playing field as OU and UT recruiting wise and still unable to have productive seasons… now thats AWESOME. TT not in the same field, but able to pull out stunners against the Horns and Sooners… that says something about this team in the coming seasons.

think about it
Although I do agree that we are behind UT and OU in recruiting… the gap is steadily closing. I truly think we have one of the best coaching staffs in the country, and our steady improvement as a program can be attributed mostly to our improvement in talent. Just as last year we signed arguably our most talented class, I see that trend continuing. Although we may not get to hand pick our players like UT does every year, I think we will eventually be right on their heels year after year. Good things are in store for the Red Raiders!!

I would recommending ignoring beergut all together. While every once in a great while he say’s something cogent, the rest of the time he is nothing but an Aggie homer (as he should be) who likes to cheer for them on this site (which he shouldn’t be).
He’s that gnat you can’t get out of the corner of your eye in the summer time. Annoying, but harmless.

respectfully disagree
who likes to cheer for them on this site (which he shouldn’t be).
I was once part of a AstrosConnection.com (aka the Big Freight Train) and that forum was full of posters from every team in the Nat’l League. All of whom participated with passion and respect. Sure there was the ocasional RedsFan who started flame wars but that is to be expected. I sincerly hope we could entertain posters from other Big XXII teams that can actually contribute to the debate. Obviously beergut doesnt
