Tim's mailbag: Why I like UT over OU - just by a little - Big 12 - ESPN

Larry Soper writes: Tim: Nice article on Taylor Potts on ESPN.com earlier this week. Could you please tell me what the Texas Tech receivers look like for Potts with Michael Crabtree gone?
Tim Griffin: Obviously, the loss of two-time Biletnikoff winner will be a big one for Texas Tech. But I think the Red Raiders actually will be more balanced this season without one player commanding most of the catches like Crabtree has done for the last two seasons. I look for Detron Lewis to step up in the featured role with a chance to catch 90-100 balls if he can stay healthy. But I've always liked Edward Britton, who I think could really blossom if he matures in his role in the offense. I think the same could be true for Tremain Swindall as well. And I know that Mike Leach has always raved about Lyle Leong and Adam James as they have played in his system. I wouldn't look for one player to catch most of the passes for Tech this season. But it will be interesting to see who Potts gravitates to as his receiver. We'll see that as the season plays out for the Red Raiders.

Batch/Jeffers/Loeng are the keys

I really think all will be surpised just how deep this offense is. We saw this some last year especially toward the end but the the swing pass out of the backfield will be huge this year. Also, havn’t seen the shuttle pass as much in the last 2 years but watchout I think here it comes again with Batch/Jeffers. I’m totally convinced that as much as I love #44- Donny Anderson(my fav), Hanspard, Ricky Williams, Henderson, and Woods Batch is the best all-around back we may have ever had. And Jeffers will be awesome. Look for Loeng to be the go-to guy with Britton, Lewis, adn Swindall just busting out.. Lastly, watch for James to be a real difference-maker on 3rd down and the goal line!

You left off James Gray, Timmy Smith, James Hadnot and a few others who really had stellar careers. Batch is good, but has a looooong way to go to be one of the best we’ve ever had as an all-around back.

Isn’t Adam James in some sort of doghouse at this point? Not sure why, or if it’s even true. Something rings a bell about that, though.

I think he’s in a not giving it his all doghouse right now. That’s all.
