Odds and Ends

New Front Page Author:  LondonRaider has been an integral part of this website for quite some time, and to be honest he may be the most recommended member in this community.  In any event, I thought it was high time to promote LondonRaider to the front page, just in time for football season.  I appreciate LondonRaider joining the DTN staff and I'm definitely looking forward to having him write for DTN.

More on AAU and Basketball:  This really has nothing to do with Texas Tech basketball, but wanted to mention this whole mess about AAU teams charging coaches huge "admission fees" for a roster or entrance into the event.  The NY Times Stephen Danley also writes that these fees can be detrimental to the players who are hoping to get noticed.  Someone is selling their information and I have to wonder who's making the money?  The bottom line with all of this is that I'm tired of AAU basketball and would love to see it end on a permanent basis.

Texas Tech Football

Svelte Henley:  LAJ's Don Williams features a more slender DE Rajon Henley, who has lost 15 pounds or so in order to make the transition from defensive tackle to defensive end.  Henley is looking forward to his last year with Texas Tech:

"I think I’m a little bit more excited about this season, it being my senior season and my last go-round," he said. "I feel I’m going to have a strong senior season. A lot of people feel the same way. I was impressed that I was able to work the way I did this summer, better than any other summer I’ve had before."

And his position coach, Charlie Sadler, had this to say about Henley:

"I think he’s going to be a very good defensive end for us," defensive line coach Charlie Sadler said. "The thing is, we went into spring ball and he basically worked there every other practice with the thought of seeing what he could do, to see if he could be an end. If he gets all the reps there in fall camp, then I think he’s going to make some real big strides as far as what the position entails."

Red Raiders Football Notebook:  LAJ's Don Williams has the scoop on a bunch of items:  some of the freshmen defensive backs are working in with the veterans and in looking at a starter opposite Jamar Wall, right now it's LaRon Moore, Taylor Charbonnet, Brent Nickerson and Nathan Stone . . . freshman safety Daniel Cobb is making an impression by picking off a pass in two consecutive practices along with a brief depth chart of Cody Davis with Franklin Mitchem, Brett Dewhurst with Julius Howard, Daniel Cobb with Will Ford, and Jared Flannel with Terrance Bullitt . . . inside receivers coach Lincoln Riley is expecting big things from WR Tramain Swindall:

"I just expect more out of Tramain," Riley said. "I expect him to make more plays. It’s not like he’s done a lot of bad things. It’s more, we expect him to be a guy who steps up and makes big plays, and he hasn’t done that as much as even he did last season."

. . . RB's Eric Stephens and Harrison Jeffers made some plays yesterday . . . the following players got a look at punt returner:  CB Jamar Wall, FL Eric Ward, IR Cornelius Douglas, IR Detron Lewis, RB Eric Stephens and SE Derrick Mays . . .

Chiozie Q & A:  RRS.com's Brian Lane talks with freshman LB Dion Chidozie.  Good stuff, quick-hit style.

Leach Set to Take Stage:  The Broadcast Booth's Brian Jensen has a photo of next months Texas Monthly, featuring your humble Captain, Mike Leach.  I'll let you decide if you like it:

Dropping off the Polls:  Notre Dame blog The Blue-Gray Sky with a look at the teams that gained the most and lost the most from last year to this year's preseason poll.  Naturally, Texas Tech is one of the biggest "losers" because they went from being in the top 15 to being just outside the preseason coaches poll.

The Offense Will Fall off the Face of the Earth:  I still don't understand how writers can continue to write that it's going to be incredibly tough for Texas Tech to replace Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree.  Texas Tech has consistently been one of the top offenses in the Big 12 under Leach so its puzzling to think that the Red Raiders will some how not be able to move the ball or put it in the endzone this year.  In any event, AthlonSports.com ranked the top 200 fantasy quarterbacks and your bearded QB, Taylor Potts came in at #6, right behind OU's Sam Bradford and just in front of UT's Colt McCoy.

Big 12 Items:  ESPN's Tim Griffin has his first power poll of the year and the Red Raiders check in at #6 . . .

Scouting the Enemy:  Barking Carnival's Henry James takes a close look at the OU offensive line (hint: they're the best in the history of ever) . . . Corn Nation's Husker Mike previews the Kansas St. Wildcats . . .

Crabtree Nugget:  So we all know that WR Michael Crabtree is still holding out, and there's been a ton of buzz about Mr. Crabtree's infamous family member who told someone that Crabtree would sit out the entire year if he didn't get the contract he wanted.  Enter DallasBasketball.com's Mike Fisher, and I'm going to blockquote the entire bit, but go give Fisher a click or two:

I have what you might call "second-hand knowledge’’ of the Michael Crabtree matter. Second-hand in the sense that I was sitting right there as my man Nate Newton was engaged in phone conversations with David Wells, the Dallas-based bodyguard/bail bondsman who happens to be the cousin and advisor of Crabtree, the spectacular Texas Tech receiver engaged in a rookie-contract dispute with the 49ers.

And here’s what I know: It’s not really Crabtree who is telling the 49ers he might sit out the entire year and re-enter the NFL Draft next season if San Francisco doesn’t meet his demands. Nor is it veteran agent Eugene Parker who is telling the 49ers such an incendiary thing.

No, it’s David Wells. And David isn’t even saying it to the 49ers! He’s just saying it to reporters.

That’s creating the impression that Crabtree is some sort of a "diva’’ when in fact, all we’ve got here is a cousin who thinks Michael is "the best player in the whole draft’’ – the sort of thing an agent wouldn’t say but the sort of thing a relative would say.

On Friday, David Wells popped off one more time, to ESPN’s Joe Schad. And then after that, I’m told, Team Crabtree convened and – led by Eugene Parker, as it should be – ordered David Wells to quit talking to reporters.

There’s a reason lawyers don’t represent themselves in court. And there’s a reason smart lawyers don’t let their cousins who are bodyguard/bail bondsmen represent them in court, either.

Maybe we can just let Crabtree and Parker work things out by themselves.

A. I hope Cobb isn’t picking those passes of from TP.
B. I hope Swindall picks it up in practice.
C. I would love the luxury of having someone less important than Jamar Wall returning punts, though I’m willing to take the risk of someone like Jeffers to return kicks because I hear he has game breaking ability.
D. Props London Raider. Give ’Em Hell.

Under Rating continues

I guess since I have been a Raider fan since the early 1960’s I should be used to being the Underdog and under rated almost every year but it just seems that unless Tech has 5 straight undefeated seasons we will always be “Torilla U”. Anyway, as much as I love Harrell/Crabtree, the loss to OU was bad preperation/deer in the headlights, and the Cotton Bowl was where we pulled a CAL with a contract contraversy thrown in, it is so very obvious to Tech faithful that our talent level is so much better across the board then we have ever had. I go back to the Donnie Anderson days and we could have 6,7,8 or so really good players and then filled in the gaps with guys that definitely overachieved. However now as it can be seen just from practice video we have real Div. 1 talent all over the field. Also don’t underestimate the graduation rate Leach has gotten. It plays hugely into several players that are 3/4 stars that really want a good degree. And to recruit in OU/OSU’s backyard is great! Our depth in the Receivers will bode well for us down the road. Again the microcaism of focusing too much on one receiver was the Cotton Bowl. When the ball is spread around then we get wins like against OU/OSU/UT. The running backs are the key to me and I think they will open up everything else if they are used just a little differently than usual and I think Leach does know this. Can’t wait! Wreck’em Tech

That graduation rate looks even better when compared with the abysmal rates at OU and UT. Just a guess, but I’m thinking when the player and/or his family care more about pro prospects, etc at the ‘Big Schools’, that’s the kind of kid that’s more likely to be a problem down the line.

Thank Everyone

And thanks again Seth. It’s a real privilege to be part of the team.

I’m looking forward to a great year. Great picture of the Captain BTW.

I continue to be genuinely impressed with our recruiting this year. As I’ve said in the past, if you’re a top receiver, offensive lineman, all-purpose running back, or quarterback, why would you not come to Tech. Where else can you get the same opportunities to shine as an individual and as a team, while being supported by a coaching staff that stresses academics?

Its great to see the impact that Leach and our program are now having on the NATIONAL recruiting scene.

Go Red Raiders!

on the Crabtree thing

as I pointed out to a buddy when sent me a text saying “Crabtree is an idiot for threatening that”, people forget that Emmitt Smith did the same damn thing with the Dallas Cowboys twenty years ago. He threatened to sit out and re-enter the draft, and even went so far as to enroll in Fall semester classes in Gainesville before coming to terms with the ’Boys.

Even though it is his cousin and not Crabtree saying it, it really isn’t a big deal. This is contract negotiations, and Parker and Crabtree are doing what they should be doing, which is get as much money as they possibly can.

As for prognostication on Tech this season, replacing Harrell won’t be hard. Replacing Crabtree is impossible, but you can try to replace his production with several players.

Welcome, LondonRaider

I have seen many of your posts and agree with Seth’s decision. I feel you can contribute quite a bit. Now, that doesn’t let the rest of us off the hook. We need to keep giving, too.

The rankings we receive from each and every entity continues to show how little effect Tech’s accomplishments last year had on the media. I know, we have been through sooooo many “Pink Raider” type years that it is just hard to convince those not in our circle how improved the overall talent Tech has when compared to any time in the past. For the first time EVER, I think this team has AT LEAST 2-, sometimes 3-tier depth at EVERY position. While a few may be inexperienced, the overall talent level is amazing. In Tech’s scheme, they do not have to be the best to compete, just close to the best. And we do have the best in some areas. I have as good a feeling this year as I did last year, and I was predicting 11 wins before the season even started. Same thing this year.

The Leach Texas Monthly Front Page Photo is GREAT! I am anxious to see the article.

Crabtree will sign. I still feel by the end of the week, he will be in the fold. He may be a bit behind at first, especially with the timing, but by the end of pre-season, he will be running on all cylinders. BE READY!
