Torres Ahead of Franks // Crawford Should Be Ready
Leach said. “He’s(Torres) really good at vertical balls, and the ability to really be polished at catching the vertical ball is something a little more sophisticated than (catching) horizontal balls. That adds a real dimension for an outside receiver to be able to do that. And then he’s a real gritty, tough guy. I like the presence he has out there.’’

Leach also said he expects Crawford to be ready to go for the season opener.

So does this put Alex Torres AHEAD of Lyle Leong for the Flanker(Z) position?

If so...
I’m not sure I could have possibly been more wrong about Leong. I really thought he was going to be “the guy” at Tech when he first got here.

Anyone
seen any video or watched this Torres kid?..I know hes new but Leach seems to love this guy. Just wondering what kind of talent this kid has.
He was a scholarship player at Air Force. Decided that wasn’t for him and transfered, walkon-like to Tech. Think a speedier Trey Haverty type of player, very consistent, very dependable.
Not quite
Torres was at the AF Prep school and got injured. He never played for AFA (I’m an alum). He then walked on at Tech in spring 2008.

Leong has moved back to X and sits #2 behind britton. I said earlier this offseason that the combination of Leong and Britton at X gives us the most productivity for that position.
Z is currently Torres → Franks → Ward.
Sorry, got that wrong a bit. Ward apparently moved over to X. This makes some sense to me because Ward, the most experienced freshman, will be learning the position of britton, the only senior WR.
So Leong COULD be the odd man out? Thats quite a blow to the Leong Bandwagon
Given this new info, the depth chart would look like this

FWIW, Jabcoy Franks is probably behind Torres right now
and not Leong. They will all get to play.

I believe Leong is at X as well. More like:
X: Eddy B, Lyle Leong, Eric Ward
H: Swindall, Corndog, Adam James
Y: Detron, Zouzalik
Z: Torres, Franks
I'm with you kayakyar
From what I remember that is what the depth chart looks like… except with someone in front of Zouzalik at Y maybe… can’t think of who it would be off hand right now though.
This is a very talented group.
Whenever the 1st stringer at any position takes a break or is out for some time, the backups may be as good a group as any 1st stringers on any other Big-12 team. I have absolutely no worries concerning the receivers this year. We are well stocked there, which means Potts has the best scenario coming into the season than has been there for any other incoming starter in Leach’s tenure, or any tenure for that matter. Amazing depth. The rest of the team, except for linebacker, is not as well stocked, There is no doubt that receiver and linebacker is our strengths, with QB and RB next in line. After that would be the OL, DL, DB, then special teams. BUT, with special emphasis being placed on the special teams more this year than previously, that could become the top performing group by season end. All-in-all, a very bright future is there just waiting to happen.

That exactly how i have been looking at the team this year in terms of our best to what we are lacking at.

If you not having fun....then your not playing the game right.
Guys…on Tech Talk today, Chris Level and Robert Giovinetti began talking about our depth at the running back position. They were saying how this time that Baron has been out has given Eric Stephens a chance to show what he can do at running back. Now I knew this kid was highly touted coming out of high school, but I hadn’t heard anything about him showing much in practice. But I could hardly believe what I was hearing! They spoke specifically about him for about 5 minutes straight…basically saying there is not a doubt in there minds that this TRUE FRESHMAN is third string at this point. Not only that, but they said there is not much of a gap between Batch, Jeffries, and Stephens. That means that Aaron Crawford is 4th string!!…thats the kid that played as a freshman to help us beat Oklahoma a few years ago. Now, nobody knows if they’ll redshirt Stephens or maybe just use him on special teams. But either way, that’s a real nice tool to have in your back pocket just in case you need it.
good article. i wasn’t exactly sure of the situation surrounding Torres. Seems like a good kid with a great work ethic. Hopefully he will prosper here at Tech
