Texas Tech Opponent Prospectus // Oklahoma St. Cowboys

2009 Texas Tech Opponent Prospectus
Game 1: North Dakota Fighting Sioux // Game 2: Rice Owls // Game 3: Texas Longhorns // Game 4: Houston Cougars // Game 5: New Mexico Lobos // Game 6: Kansas State Wildcats // Game 7: Nebraska Cornhuskers // Game 8: Texas A&M Aggies // Game 9: Kansas Jayhawks // Game 10: Oklahoma St. Cowboys
It seems that the preseason question of the year is if Oklahoma State is the 2008 version of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. I've mentioned before that I'm not completely sold on Oklahoma St., despite the fact that I do beleive they may be the most offensively well-balanced team in the Big 12.
Join me after the jump for a closer look at Oklahoma St.

A Few Things
- What Worries Me: Here's the thing. Oklahoma St. should be improved this year and I can understand how folks think that OSU is going to be this year's version of Texas Tech. I can't base any of my thoughts on OSU on something rational and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cowboys prove me wrong, but I still can't get it out of my head that OSU just didn't show up against Texas Tech, a team that many thought up until that time, were contemporaries. I can understand the losses to Oklahoma and Oregon, but not even showing up bothers me. Maybe I should just let it go, but it's stuck with me through the offseason.
- Balanced and Explosive Offense: We talked in the Kansas prospectus about the Jayhawk trio and there's no doubt in my mind that Oklahoma State's trio is superior. Zac Robinson, Dez Bryant and the workhorse of the offense, Kendall Hunter, are big-time players. I don't know if they'll surpass last year's offensive numbers, but they'll match them. The one thing that worries me is that all-world tight end, Brandon Pettigrew, has moved onto the NFL, which means that Robinson's second options is no longer available. In fact, Bryant had 87 catches last year, which was more Oklahoma State's three other pass catchers, Pettigrew (42), Damiam Davis (19) and Kendall Hunter (22). Pettigrew's possible replacements, Jamal Moseley and Wilson Youman, had a combined 6 catches last year.
- Play Making Defense Wanted: There's really not a Big 12 defense that played incredibly well last year, however, the Cowboys' defense was 93rd in the nation in total defense and was 109th in pass defense (more on that below). On top of that, OSU had serious trouble getting to any quarterback and was 107th in the nation at sacking the QB last year. The problem is that last year's unit had very little production and that also means there's very little production returning. I know that Bill Young tends to work miracles with defenses and to be honest, I think OSU has recruited very well over the years, but I'm not convinced that changing the defensive coordinator means that Oklahoma St. deserves to be a top 10 team, especially when the defense hasn't proven that it deserves this spot.
- Replacing Three-Fourths of a Secondary: Much like Texas Tech, OSU must replace both safeties and a cornerback (why is no one else talking about that?). Projected FS Lucien Antoine had 1 tackle last year and projected SS Victor Johnson had 19. Safety is always a big position to fill and considering OSU was less than stellar last year defending the pass, look for this to be an issue for Oklahoma St. this year.
- Spaced Out Schedule: The one thing that I like about Oklahoma State is that the Cowboys really don't have an incredibly tough stretch and they have eight games at home. Opening against Georgia and Houston at home should be relatively easy. the next big game comes against Texas, again, at home, with a week of Iowa State between the Horns and Texas Tech. Then another week against an inferior opponent in Colorado, and then Oklahoma. In other words, there's not this tough three game stretch like so many teams faced last year and there's no doubt that the schedule favors Oklahoma St.

If nothing else, because we have split home field wins in recent history. I agree that they will not necessarily be ‘last year’s TTU’, but neither will we. I believe both teams will stay above mediocre but this game is cause for concern. Not only have they won the home games recently, they will be out for revenge from last year as well. Not picking this as a sure loss… but definitely a 5 on my worry-meter.

The fact that I have witnessed L’s my last 3 trips to Stillwater make this a no-brainer 5 for my vote. Addressing the fact that they didn’t show up at Tech last year, the same could be said for us in Norman. What I mean is they play us well at T. Boone, but have always struggled at Jones. Plus, until one of us steps it up a notch(Tech/State), there’s only 2 teams especially in the South that go a whole season without at least one stinker. My question: will we be as good as the ‘07 Tech squad? If so, I like our chances, because I’m not sold on State either.

I also am not sold on this defense. I feel they may have more to overcome than anyone is writing about. If Tech does not go there with the right mindset, this is a big loss. It is kind of like this is the new TCU for Tech on its schedule. You all remember how much we seemed to always struggle against an inferrior Frog team year in and year out? Well this is them in orange instead of purple. If Tech shows up ready, they will win this one, but not easily.

I think OSU is going to be the most disappointing team this year. That said, I think that we have a very poor chance: we play like crap at boone pickens.

4 for me.
I’m confident Tech has a better overall team but these guys are always a challenge. I often tell people I feel like it’s our true rival. Both schools will be fighting for that 3rd spot and this game will decide a great deal. Dez scares the hell out me with our secondary. This game will be a very close one. I say Tech sqeeks by with a fieldgoal to win it in OT.
Tech 27 OSU 24.

T. Boone stadium
will be a test of the Red Raiders “improved” defense under McNeil. The loss in 07 was a big disappointment and it led to McNeil taking over as DC. If Tech’s defense is legit, it will be obvious in this game and Raiders will prevail.

Road game in stillwater.. rough
OSU is scrapping for recognition. We are the natural level of competition. They always play a good game over the last 8 years in Stillwater. Even gave ut a scare in 07 as I recall. Dez Bryant is a hands down favorite at least from the Big 12 voters for the Biletnikof award. He had more total yards receiving than Crabman had last year too. The RB K. Hunter is money too. So I agree the offense is going score an average of 40 plus all year long. Not so sure they score 40 on the Raiders. Darn I am starting to count up the phantoms. Back to the vagaries and collisions. Techs coaching staff is better than Gundy’s coaching team. OSU Looks to be better on defense. The New Def Coord. is going fire them up that’s a given. I think they will improve on defense but it’s not going to be miracle event. It’s not like they will suddenly be a dominant force. Heck we are not dominant force- yet. They won’t have the D line to beat our O –line and Potts’ choice of weapons is going to be effective at hurting those new safeties. Tech Running backs should do bit of damage as well. Thing that bugs me is this road game hang up that TTU displays. Not mentally focused, getting frustrated etc. I want that tendency to be buried this year. So am I concerned with a tight game? Yes I am. We are getting better every year as well. I voted 4 and Tech wins by 10 points. Watch out for little travel bottles as you run for the tunnel. O yeah and "pistols firing ! .. not so good a TD sedge way line. That’s just me.

It’s at T. Boone, return their “triplets” who provide a very balanced offense, revenge factor…I think we can take them but it won’t be easy. We’ll have to play a near-perfect game.

Hunter is scary, especially if he gets outside. Given that we are replacing both DE positions, getting outside will be easier than it was last year. My biggest concern is not the OSU passing game, its that they won’t have to pass to do damage, control the ball, and that will open up big plays for Bryant. Gundy favors very balanced play calling, so he won’t abandoned the run either. I see this game turning into a horse race. If TOP is in their favor, I worry about our defense coming up with key stops in the 4th quarter.

The last few games in Stilly have been so close
so I think we finally eek one out this time. Still voted 5 though!
