Recruiting on the High Seas // DB Tre'Vante Porter
Seems like were on a little bit of a roll here, no? Tre'Vante Porter, a defensive back from Midwest City, OK, has committed to Texas Tech. I can't say that I know too much about Porter, but from what I've read, Porter was down to Texas Tech and Oklahoma St. Let's get to it.

The Film
Unfortunately, the only free video I could find was via the ESPN Profile, the problem was that I'm not sure how much you can tell from the video other than Porter looks to be a heck of an athlete.
The Scouting Report
From the video mentioned above the one thing that stood out to me was that he was not afraid of contact. Perhaps a good word would be that he's just aggressive. That's probably a really good thing to be as an athlete and the kid does not appear to be afraid to lay it on. Here's a portion of the ESPN Profile:
Porter is a versatile athlete that stands out on in the secondary, as a wide out and on special teams. He is a physically impressive looking football player that is lean and athletic. Possesses above average speed and is very quick. On defense plays the game with confidence and is a reactor. Keeps very good leverage and tempo on the football and doesn't allow the running back to cut the football back to the inside. Often avoids blockers or uses hands to separate and disengage in order to get to the ball. A reliable tackler that doesn't always make picture perfect hits but usually makes the play. Sometimes doesn't take the extra step and leaves feet too early when making an angular tackle. Very solid pass defender that can step in front of the out and curl patterns to make a play on the football. A threat to bring the football back the distance once he makes the interception.
The Player Speaks
There's a couple of things from the interwebs about Porter, up first, from the NewsOK High School Sports Blog, Ryan Aber, who talked today before committing:
I talked with Tre a bit before the ceremony and he seemed relaxed and ready to get the announcement out of the way. And it wasn’t a drawn out thing like so many guys like to do. He simply thanked everyone for being there, then reached out for the shirt (although he did put his hand on the OSU shirt while telling the assembled crowd how much he liked the Cowboys).
Snip
"I just didn’t want the distraction, didn’t like all the phone calls and everything," Porter said. "I just wanted to get it over with."
And RaiderPower's Mark Sparrow has a bit of a scouting report on Porter:
Defensively, Porter is effective at locking up receivers as well as getting into the backfield to disrupt quarterbacks and running backs on blitz packages. A solid tackler who knocks opponents back when he wraps up, Tre finished his junior season with 96 tackles, one sack, and four interceptions.

Just to throw my commentary into the ring, I really like this recruit: He’s fast, he can play either db position and he’s got a receiver’s mentality when the ball is in the air. His highlight reel has him out-jumping receivers and running under the ball and catching it with his hands. With his speed, I think he might be projected at corner.
There are 2 things to note about this class: 1) it’s filling up quickly. We’ve only got 5 or so spots left. 2) It’s fast. From top to bottom, this class may be the fastest one we’ve signed yet. All of the RB’s, WR’s, and DB’s “run” a 4.5 or better except Desmond Martin (whose film looks great anyway). On the DL, Richards is the slowest with a 4.85 and he’s going to be awesome. Our first tackle in this class runs a 4.74. Our LB and one of our DE’s run 4.6’s. Lots to be excited about with the new focus on speed (not discounting the other qualities of these players).
Re: Filling up quickly
What I’m curious is if our completeness of this class will inspire mike to start recruiting 2011 earlier than normal this year. Similar to how UT does it. It’s really interesting, I think, that UT’s strategy of forcing early commitments has really pushed up the timeline of a bunch of the other schools like TTU and OSU, schools that previously made a living off of sniping up unheralded prospects that emerged during their senior years of high school.
Filling up fast has been backfiring on UT a bit, though, since they have a hard time landing the “big” prospects that wait until NSD to decide either because they run out of room and a commit in the hand is better than none at all, or they wait on a prospect and have trouble picking up a backup plan after NSD is over. Not that they really need it to put together great recruiting classes.
