Recruiting on the High Seas // OL Denton Simek

Mike Leach & Co. are on a roll as the Red Raiders have secured their fourteenth commitment the 2010 class in Prague, OK, offensive lineman, Denton Simek.  This is one of those commits that seemingly came out of no where (I don't think he was offered until somewhat recently) and he's found a home with Texas Tech.  As you'll note from the scouting services below, it appears that Scout may be a bit behind in their evaluation, but Simek seems to have graded fairly well by both Rivals and ESPN, all the while having offers from Oklahoma State, Nebraska and almost the entire Big 12, sans OU and UT.

The Measurables:

The Film:

Nothing that I could find for free.  I'm sure that the ESPN video will have something sooner rather than later, but for those of you who are cheap, much like myself, you'll just have to be patient.

The Scouting Report:

The always reliable ESPN profile comes through with a solid review of Simek:

Simek is an athletic offensive lineman. He is a little undersized for a tackle and will project as a guard at the next level. Very quick off the football and gets into the defender immediately. Uses his hands very aggressively on initial contact but must learn to lock the in the frame of the defensive man in order to sustain the block. Starts off at good pad level but tends to get high a little too high too soon. Works his feet well and keeps after the opponent; gives good effort. Pulls and traps with sound fundamentals and with very good foot agility; doesn't get caught up in the garbage. Adjusts instinctively on the move and demonstrates the athleticism to pick up a linebacker in space. Shows the ability to reach a wide technique defensive end or outside linebacker; get outside pad control but still needs to lock the hands in the frame of the defender.

Make sure and click on through for the entire evaluation.

The 2010 Class:

So this class is rounding out to look a lot like the "team concept" that Ruffin McNeill mentioned during the past recruiting season.  I think kayakar has mentioned that there is only 19 or so spots available so the spots are filling up fast.

Position Commitment
QB Scotty Young (6-3/185)
RB Aaron Spikes (5-10/185)
WR Shawn Corker (6-1/189)
OL Beau Carpenter (6-7/260)
James Polk (6-7/290)
Denton Simek (6-4/260)
DL Jaqwaylin Arps (6-3/230)
Kedrick Dial (6-5/215)
Jackson Richards (6-4/240)
LB Zac Winbush (6-2/200)
DB Desmond Martin (6-0/173)
Russell Polk (5-11/200)
Brandon Smith (6-1/175)

Denton, welcome to Texas Tech, and Git Your Guns Up!

YEA!

This is a good Tech class. I noticed a receiver (in story about Corker) and linebacker (Fehoko’s li’l bro) I would sure like to see Tech get. Looking good so far, though.

Talking about Boone? if so, yeah, I would like to see us land Boone.

I’d like to see our class finish out with:
Boone,
Griffin,
Wright,
Fedlt,
Fehoko,
Urell Johnson (I think i got that right),
and some unnamed DT + maybe another OL?

Going a bit of a stretch with 2 more receivers and and an offensive athlete (considering we were going to only take 2 receivers total), but man, what a set of offensive players those would be. Still a long time to February and with 14 commitments, there’s a whole lot to be excited about.

Rivals and Scout list him at 6'6

which is the right height for an offensive tackle prospect

Also, it doesn’t look like A&M was recruiting this guy at all.
