Recruiting on the High Seas // RB Delans Griffin

I'm not sure which is a bigger commitment recently, and to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if you could be in for a few more surprises relatively soon.  The Texas Tech Red Raiders received a verbal commitment from Clinton, OK running back, Delans Griffin. This is a huge commitment and just from looking at the rankings below as well as the film after the jump, you'll see why.

The Measurables:

The Film:

Heck yes.

Granted, the blocks and the holes Griffin's offensive line is opening up are pretty spectacular, but you can tell that he's got vision and speed to burn. Watch for yourself, and you may want to turn down your speakers.

The Scouting Report:

First, my general perception and then the very reliable ESPN for additional thoughts. As mentioned above, Griffin seems to have tremendous vision and and cut-back ability. The guy looks really smooth finding the hole, and it doesn't have to be much for him to find a spot, and then turn on the jets. The guy looks to be pretty special. The Red Raiders have come up with some impressive runners recently, and you can certainly add Griffin to that list.

Now to Griffin's ESPN profile:

SGriffin is smooth, natural running back prospect with the potential to develop into a productive featured runner at the next level. Has just adequate size at this time but is well-defined, wiry and has the body to play at 190-pounds to assist his inline power and durability. Shows very good pick and dart zone running skills; has great hips, foot-quickness, vision and body control. Sees the creases open up quickly between the tackles and makes sharp, decisive cuts. Very sudden in-line runner who is difficult to get a clean shot on. Reaches top-speed quickly allowing him to hit the seams just as they open and generate enough momentum to break first contact on occasion. Flashes good burst and foot-speed bouncing outside; loses very little in transition cutting laterally and can turn the corner and separate.

Make sure and click on through for the entire evaluation.

Two Running Backs?

It's been since 2007 since the Captain signed two running backs, Jared Flannel (now turned safety) and Aaron Crawford. But with the addition of Griffin, Leach & Co. have secured both Griffin's verbal commitment and fellow runner Aaron Spikes, who also looks to be a pretty talented runner. The difference between the two is that Spikes appears to be more of a Harrison Jeffers type of running back, smaller in stature but has the ability to add some weight. Griffin on the other hand looks lanky out on the field. Perhaps Griffin's commitment signals a type of player that is a little more versatile, could be split wide, perhaps be moved around a bit in motion, etc. If anything, I think it gives Leach some ability to be creative, maybe a look ahead as he tries to tweak his offense a bit.

The Player Speaks

RaiderPower's Mark Sparrow talked with Griffin and how he thinks he fits in the offense:

"I think that I’ll fit in really well with Texas Tech’s offense. I like playing in the spread offense, and I can catch the ball as well as run it. I think that’s an advantage I have to playing tail back; I can either run the ball out of the backfield or I can catch passes.

The 2010 Class:

Position Commitment
QB Scotty Young (6-3/185)
RB Aaron Spikes (5-9/185)
Delans Griffin (5-10/180)
WR Shawn Corker (6-1/189)
OL Beau Carpenter (6-7/260)
James Polk (6-7/290)
Denton Simek (6-4/260)
DL Jaqwaylin Arps (6-3/230)
Kedrick Dial (6-5/215)
Jackson Richards (6-4/240)
LB Zac Winbush (6-2/200)
DB Desmond Martin (6-0/173)
Russell Polk (5-11/200)
Brandon Smith (6-1/175)

Delans, welcome to Texas Tech, and Git Your Guns Up!

This is great!!!!

I cannot recall a time where Tech has ever had FIFTEEN commitments before the season has even started!!! This guy looks very promising! Can you imagine if we manage to land Darius White, the 5-star WR from Fort Worth?? On ESPNU they said he is considering Tech, Oklahoma State, UT, OU, and USC. We are in his top 5!!!! IF we can land him and a few more solid 3-4 star defensive players, along with Corker and a few other of our 3-stars earning a 4th star, we are headed for a top 20 or top 15 class!!!! Last season is REALLY paying off! I think Leach will finally realize he just needs to stay put and committed to Tech because we are heading up even faster than I would have imagined!

The last part of the article

Said he does not have great break-away speed. Well, if they can’t catch him, his speed must be pretty darn good, not just good. Like techtom4 said, now if only Darius White will make a commit, along with a couple of others that have been mentioned, this could be THE best class ever. The best part is that Tech is not necessarily settling on just anyone now. Almost ALL of the commits are exceptional, with minimum of 3-star ratings. It will be nice if they all improve on that this year, possibly giving Tech a class equal to all other teams in talent. Another sidebar, these are good STUDENTS, not just great football players; something Tech has been stressing in their recruiting. This makes me happy. How about the rest of you?

Far be it from me to question the expert scouting provided by the Worldwide Leader, but

Saying that a back can shoot through holes almost as quickly as they appear, and then turning around and saying he lacks great breakaway speed is bordering on nonsensical. A tailback’s ability to exploit opportunities the defense gives him within the first 20 yards past the line of scrimmage is always (ALWAYS) more important to his success as a big play threat than how fast he’s going once he’s 40 yards down the field.

WR/RB U!!!!!

I think we will see some different looks this year with 2 great RB’s. I think this bodes very well for the future. If we could get White that would be awesome, and even to still be in the hunt says a lot! I still like the O.J. Ross(?) out of Florida that runs a 4.36. To have that speed on the outside would just be unfair but great! A couple of more good fast defensive players and this could be one of the best classes ever @ Tech! Wreck’em Tech

OJ Ross is only 5’10" on a good day. He’s slot all the way. I’m rooting for Kadron Boone. He’s my current #1 followed by James Wright from Louisiana. I doubt we have a chance at Darius White.

Great

to hear a RB commit that says he likes to catch the ball out in the flat just as much at he likes to take a hand off. The few passes in the video look like he has respectable hands too.

Type of rbs

Is it just me or does it seem that changes have been made in regards to the type of running backs we are recruiting?

When Leach came on board it seems we were content with going for scat-back types who weren’t the best runners but were quick and could be valuable weapons in the pass game (both blocking and catching)… i.e. TH, woods, Mack

now were recruiting better pure rbs and seem to have the RB by committee strategy in mind…which I’m sure everyone is happy to see as it appears that’s where the game is headed.

Another great find!

As I watched the video, I was thinking “this kid is ready to play”. But the amazing thing is that the vid is from almost a year ago. He still has another year(possibly 2 if he redshirts) to grow and prepare himself for BIG12 play. That would be almost three years from the time this video was recorded. Yeah, we’re gonna be in great shape at the running back position for a while.

This class is really shaping up to be special;))
