Much better game

As The Captain said better game on all sides of the ball.

Great game

After a slow start, someone got a real chewing out at the half, because Tech came out of the locker room smoking. Potts was not perfect, with several bad throws, but certainly efficient enough to lead the Raiders to a big win against an obviously out-manned Rice team. I was able to listen in Austin via the CUMULUS radio network on the Rice athletics web site. The announcers were for Rice, but quickly acknowledged Techs good play. The station also had difficulty with some stuttering at times. However, it was nice to listen to the game and keep up on the webcast at the same time. I am still uneasy concerning the running game. As bad as Rice was against the run last week, I was hoping to see Tech just pound it in there most of the time. WRONG! At least Potts is doing better, no INTs and 7 TDs. Nice to see Sheffield get in and throw for a score, as well. The “D” did a decent job, with the 1st team holding Rice to under 200 yards. But, about 150 of that was on only 3 drives, with one ending with a FG. The 2nd team “D” gave up a TD, but got some valuable time. Definitely a better game. The one concern, other than the run game, is Corona having short kick-offs. Was the wind causing that or what? OK, Raiders, time to get ready for Burnt Orange Nation. Don’t hold anything back and beat them down on their own turf. WRECK ’EM!

Awesome Game!!

I’m content that Potts had a good game. Still a few things to CORRECT and not dwell on. Receivers had a great game, way to go guys! Defense was awesome, they really played hard for 4 quarters. I’m still a bit worried on the status of Detron Lewis and RaJon Henley. I’d like to know something as soon as possible on them. I know Tech doesn’t release that infromation but here’s hoping to a speedy recovery. Overall, a mega improvement from last week.

The D is the difference

I sincerely think that we have a very good opportunity against Texas, especially after I listened to the first half of their game tonight.

Wreck ’em!

Texas looked like they were sleep walking in the first half. Almost as if they thought the burnt orange logo on their helmet would win the game for them. Did a lot better in the second half, but this game was never in doubt.

Reminded me of how we played against UND last week. They’ll be ready for us next week. And I think we’ll be ready for them. Don’t know what that means as a final result, but the execution will likely be much better for both teams all game long.

believe it or not…I think Texas was looking past Wyoming to us next week…I just hope we don’t get driven completly into the dirt down there…

Texas was NOT looking past Wyoming at Tech

Texas was looking past Wyoming at Pasadena. That is a fact. There has been nary a mention of Tech on BON or by the press when interviewing Texas players. We’re not even on their radar. Almost 100% of UT comments are about how they need to go undefeated for McCoy to win the Heisman. Seriously. I’ll post more on this later, but one of the reasons I think we win is because Texas is not taking Tech seriously.

Much improved

What a difference a week (or at least halftime) makes.

Still confused a bit on the complete absence of a running game. Didn’t even try, and that is interesting. We’ve got less than 100 yards through two games. That will not work in the Big XII against the big boys. Maybe Leach is sandbagging. Maybe they suck in practice and he doesn’t want to go down that road in a game. Only he knows.

Potts was better, but this throwing behind receivers short and overthrowing guys deep needs to be worked on a bit more. I didn’t see the game, but some folks commented it sounded like he was scared to get hit and got really antsy in the pocket…maybe that gets fixed with time.

Defense was great. Sacks left and right.

Special teams, well, for Tech will always be “special” and PATs may just become another exciting play for us. : )

Overall, I am encouraged and think Tech will be able to put up a decent fight next week against Texas.

Tech should do fine against UT

Just cut down on the penalties & keep up the intensity on defense.

Lewis and Henley’s injuries don’t look to serious, precautionary measure maybe??

Batch

He is not getting many touches in either hand-offs or passes. I wonder if the arm is still nagging him? Our Run:pass ratio looks more like 2007 that I would expect with a healthy Batch in the back field and with Jeffers and Stephens splitting time.

Congrats on the win, but...

Glad we blew out Rice on the scoreboard, but I’m not overly impressed with Potts or our running game. Don’t really know about our defense until we play real competition, but we seem to look good. We took care of business, but…

I like our team Mon-Fri as they say all the right things and seem like one big family, which I love. Even if we lose to UT, if we can beat UH (which is looking tougher to do) and run the table a bit I think we’ll be in good shape.

So I’ve never had a problem listening on 95.3 here in Plano, now we’re on 1190am and as soon as it got dark (already in the truck after dinner) we had to drive all the way South of LBJ to get reception. Way to think that one through Learfield. I don’t know if there’s a way to listen online because we weren’t home, but piss poor reception. I was really looking forward to hearing the post game show, but lost reception on the Tollway about Frankford heading back North.

Thanks for starting the thread Yakr.

Seemed like a good game from what I COULD hear though.

Streaming audio in case you're home

This is from the “Rice Game Streaming Online?” thread:

Just click on Listen Live. Worked well for me.
Sadly, I couldn’t get it to work on my smartphone, unlike the greatness of the The Ticket.

Soooo

No one is going to say anything about Leong? Okay, I put that on myself. I think Lewis really got injured, seeing the replay a rice DB pushed him as he was trying to fond his balance. But, when he went out, someone had to step up and Mr. Leong did a GREAT job. Are we seeing that high school td pass tandem from Abilene High that we expected? (potts to leong). And we ALL know how far he was in Leach’s doghouse, he definitely climbed out of that. Swindall did great as well, so did zouk, but I really think leong can be a special weapon as we come closer to the week we’ve all been ready for. I just wanna see McCoy cry again.

Houston Game

Although they managed some very fortunate breaks in order to get the win, I really enjoyed watching their offense. When it was clicking, which was pretty often, it reminded me of what I wish Tech would do. The way that they utilized the two-back set with motion to constantly freeze the d-line and backers led to what seemed to be minimum 3-yard rushes (averaged 4.1yds/rush). At a time when we seem to have the deepest set of backs of Leach’s tenure, it would be great to see them utilized in as effective a manner as Houston uses theirs. Beall reminded me a lot of Batch in his running style and receiving ability. The fact that we turned the ball over on downs at the goal line highlights the need to incorporate a little more variety in the run game that gives us a better chance to convert in short-yardage situations.

The run

I think like everyone else, that the running game needs to be twice as much as it is now. However, I do not feel it is the coaching, but the quarterback that needs to make that call. Harrell got better over time and so will Potts. It will be tough for us fans, and maybe Tech, to wait for him to get better at calling for the run, or at least knowing when to call for the run. Double the runs to about 26 to 30 per game and the defenses can not key on the passing game and the receivers so much. I think everyone except the person making the calls actually sees how good the running backs really are. Tech just needs to place more trust in them, because more touches by them means more open receivers. Then, look out. Again, patience. In all aspects.

I think you're right

Potts gets a pass and run play each time and it is up to him to make the call at the line. He is the one opting for the pass play so often. But it is the coaching staff that needs to teach him how/when to do that properly.
